Ammonolysis with N 2 -diluted NH 3 suppresses Ta( IV ) defects in BaTaO 2 N and enhances photocatalytic water oxidation

BaTaO 2 N stands out among oxynitride photocatalysts because of its ability to capture visible light and to drive the photoelectrochemical water oxidation reaction. However, its solar energy conversion performance is limited by electron–hole recombination at Ta( IV ) defects in the material. These defects are formed by overreduction of the Ta(v) oxide precursor by excess ammonia under the high temperature conditions during ammonolysis. Here we show for the first time that Ta( IV ) defect concentrations can be lowered by conducting the ammonolysis reaction in mixed NH 3 /N 2 gas. The obtained BaTaO 2 N samples crystallize in the cubic CaTiO 3 structure type and form 200–300 nm faceted nanocrystals, based on X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and HRTEM. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra observe the Ta( IV ) defects at g = 1.999 and confirm an 11-fold reduction for the product synthesized in mixed (0.13 : 1.0 vol) NH 3 /N 2 gas, equivalent to 1.14 × 10 16 cm −3 Ta( IV ) ions. This optimized BaTaO 2 N has nearly twice the photocatalytic oxygen evolution activity (AQE of 6.78% at 400 nm) of a reference material made with 1.0 atm ammonia and 78% higher photoelectrochemical water oxidation photocurrent (0.9 mA cm −2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE) under simulated sunlight. According to X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, remaining Ta( IV ) defects are concentrated in the surface region of the BaTaO 2 N particles, where >50% of all Ta ions are found in the +4 oxidation state. This surface Ta( IV ) population can be directly observed in Vibrating Kelvin Probe Surface Photovoltage Spectra (VK-SPV) via its 1.2–1.4 eV photovoltage onset. Here, it suggests that the surface Ta( IV ) ions contribute empty d-states 0.5–0.7 eV below the BaTaO 2 N conduction band edge. These findings highlight how the energetics and concentrations of Ta( IV ) defects influence the photoelectrochemical water oxidation ability of BaTaO 2 N. Additionally, the work establishes ammonolysis with diluted NH 3 as a new tool to minimize defects in BaTaO 2 N and to raise its solar energy conversion efficiency toward its theoretical limit. Because of its simplicity, the reduced ammonia pressure strategy will likely be applicable to other oxynitrides, which generally suffer from overreduction problems during ammonolysis.

Chemical treatment effects on Schottky contacts to metalorganic chemical vapor deposited n-type N-polar GaN

In this article, we investigate the effect of different chemical treatments, such as solvents, bases, and acids, on the surface properties and electrical behavior of Schottky diodes fabricated on metalorganic chemical vapor deposition-grown, n-type, N-polar GaN. The I–V and C–V barrier heights of the as-grown Schottky diodes are found to be 0.40 eV and 0.60 eV, respectively, with an ideality factor n = 1.07. It is found that the solvent treatments neither change the surface nor the electrical performance of the Schottky diodes, as expected. However, the treatments by the alkaline photolithography developer and acid—the latter of which is often used to clean the surface of Ga-polar GaN films prior to metal contact deposition—degrade the performance of N-polar GaN. These base and acid treatments severely roughen the surface by creating triangular/hexagonal crystallographic facets. The I–V and C–V barrier heights of these base- and acid-treated diodes are increased to 0.63 eV and 1.00 eV, respectively, with ideality factor values n < 1.2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies indicate that base- and acid-treated surfaces have lower oxygen content as compared to the as-grown sample surface. It is understood that the increment in the barrier height for base- and acid-treated diodes could be due to the change in polarity, from N-polar to semi-polar/non-polar, on these crystallographic features. All these results demonstrate that, unlike for Ga-polar GaN, the N-polar GaN surface is highly reactive to bases and acids.

Exploring direct photodetachment and photodissociation–photodetachment dynamics of platinum iodide anions (PtI n - , n = 2–5) using cryogenic photoelectron spectroscopy

The direct photodetachment and two-photon photodissociation–photodetachment processes of a series of PtI n - (n = 2–5) anions were systematically studied using cryogenic anion photoelectron spectroscopy and first-principles electronic structure calculations. The adiabatic/vertical detachment energies (ADEs/VDEs) of these anions were determined from their 193 nm photoelectron (PE) spectra, i.e., 3.54/3.63, 4.04/4.09, 4.33/4.36, and 4.37/4.41 eV for n = 2–5, respectively, and well reproduced by B3LYP-D3(BJ)/aug-cc-pVTZ-pp calculations. As the coordination number increases, the electron affinity (EA) of PtI n • (n = 2–5) neutrals (equivalent to the corresponding anion’s ADE) gradually increases, exceeding the EA of Cl at n = 3 and exhibiting superhalogen characteristics for n ≥ 3. Meanwhile, the ground state transition contributed from detaching electrons in the highest occupied molecular orbital gradually evolves from the central metal Pt to the iodine ligands. For the PtI 3 - anion, besides one-photon direct detachment, four distinct two-photon photodissociation–photodetachment channels were identified, and the competition between them was discussed.

Measurement of the energy-differential 35 Cl( n, p 0 ) 35 S cross section via the ratio with 6 Li( n, α ) 3 H

Knowledge of the neutron-induced 35 Cl ⁢(n, x) cross sections is vital to the design and certification of molten chloride fast reactors (MCFRs) since the 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) 35 S reaction is believed to be a significant reactor poison. However, recently published measurements are inconsistent with each other and with evaluation. Here, the goal of this work is to measure the 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) reaction cross section using a technique that is different from recent measurements. The experiment was conducted at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's (LBNL) 88-Inch Cyclotron using thick target deuteron breakup from a 14 MeV deuteron beam. Energy-differential 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) 35 S cross sections were obtained via ratio with the 6 Li (n, a)⁢ 3 H reaction using an active target experiment with a Cs 2 ⁢LiYCl 6 (CLYC) scintillator. The 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) reaction cross section was measured from 2.02 to 7.46 MeV. The results are consistent with Kuvin et al., confirming a roughly 50% reduction in magnitude relative to the ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation. These data provide new insight into the role of natural Cl as an MCFR poison. The reduction of the 35 Cl (n, p 0 ) reaction cross section compared to evaluation suggests that MCFR criticality is less sensitive to Cl enrichment. This may in turn reduce building and operating costs since isotope separation may not be needed.

encore : an O ( N g2) estimator for galaxy N -point correlation functions

ABSTRACT We present a new algorithm for efficiently computing the N-point correlation functions (NPCFs) of a 3D density field for arbitrary N. This can be applied both to a discrete spectroscopic galaxy survey and a continuous field. By expanding the statistics in a separable basis of isotropic functions built from spherical harmonics, the NPCFs can be estimated by counting pairs of particles in space, leading to an algorithm with complexity $\mathcal {O}(N_\mathrm{g}^2)$ for Ng particles, or $\mathcal {O}(N_\mathrm{FFT}\log N_\mathrm{FFT})$ when using a Fast Fourier Transform with NFFT grid-points. In practice, the rate-limiting step for N > 3 will often be the summation of the histogrammed spherical harmonic coefficients, particularly if the number of radial and angular bins is large. In this case, the algorithm scales linearly with Ng. The approach is implemented in the encore code, which can compute the 3PCF, 4PCF, 5PCF, and 6PCF of a BOSS-like galaxy survey in ${\sim}100$ CPU-hours, including the corrections necessary for non-uniform survey geometries. We discuss the implementation in depth, along with its GPU acceleration, and provide practical demonstration on realistic galaxy catalogues. Our approach can be straightforwardly applied to current and future data sets to unlock the potential of constraining cosmology from the higher point functions.

Improved Syntheses of 4'-Vinylbenzo-3 n -Crown- n Ethers ( n = 5–7)

We report a convenient, high-yielding, and scalable synthetic approach to the construction of crown ether monomers has been developed. Using this method, a wide-ranging class of polymerizable crown ethers can be efficiently obtained. The identity of the crown ethers was further established using single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Two of the vinylbenzocrown ethers crystallize with water, affording infinite supramolecular assemblies containing hydrogen-bonded water molecules. The crown ethers described in this manuscript will be used as host molecules in separation science.

Cross sections for the 54 Fe(n, n′) 54 Fe and 54 Fe(n, p′) 54 Mn reactions deduced from the detection of de-excitation γ rays

γ-ray production cross sections have been deduced for reactions with incident neutrons having energies from 1.5 - 4.7 MeV. Similar measurements were made on a natural Ti sample to establish an absolute normalization. The resulting γ-ray production cross sections are compared to TENDL and TALYS calculations, as well as data from previous measurements. The models are found to describe the production cross sections for most γ rays observed from 54Mn and 54Fe rather well.

Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory Description of 238 U⁡(n,f), 240,242 Pu⁢(n,f), and 237 Np(n,f) Reactions

In nuclei with an odd nucleon number the nonvanishing spin number density is the source of a pseudomagnetic field, which favors the splitting of the nucleon Cooper pairs. Such a pseudomagnetic field is generated always in the dynamics of any nucleus, but its effects on Cooper pairs are significantly enhanced in the dynamic evolution of nuclei with an odd number of nucleons. We present for the first time a microscopic study of the induced fission of the odd neutron compound nuclei 239 U, 241,243 Pu, and the odd proton, odd neutron compound nucleus 238 Np, performed within the time-dependent density functional theory extended to superfluid fermion systems, without any simplifying assumptions, with controlled numerical approximations, and for a very large number of initial conditions. Because of the presence of the unpaired odd nucleon(s), the time-reversal symmetry of the fission compound nucleus is spontaneously broken, an aspect routinely neglected in the most advanced microscopic approaches of the past. The emerging fission fragment properties are quite similar to the properties of fission fragments of neighboring even-even nuclei. The time from saddle-to-scission is often significantly longer in odd-odd or odd-mass nuclei than for even-even nuclei, since systems with unpaired nucleons are easier to excite and the potential energy surfaces of these nuclei have more structure, often resembling a very complicated obstacle course, rather than a more direct evolution of the nuclear shape from the top of the outer fission barrier to the scission configuration. The Pauli blocking approximation, often invoked in the literature, expected to inhibit the fission of nuclei with unpaired nucleons, is surprisingly strongly violated during the fission dynamics.

The Baghdad Atlas: A relational database of inelastic neutron-scattering (n,n ' γ) data

A relational database has been developed based on the original (n,n'γ) work carried out by A. M. Demidov et al., at the Nuclear Research Institute in Baghdad, Iraq (Demidov et al., 1978) for 105 independent measurements comprising 76 elemental samples of natural composition and 29 isotopically-enriched samples. The information from this Atlas includes: γ-ray energies and relative intensities; nuclide and level data corresponding to the residual nucleus and meta data associated with the target sample that allows for the extraction of the flux-weighted (n,n'γ) cross sections for a given transition relative to a defined value. The optimized angular-distribution-corrected fast-neutron flux-weighted partial γ-ray cross section for the production of the 846.8-keV 21+→0gs+γ-ray transition in 56Fe, determined to be $\langle$σγ$\rangle$=143(29) mb, is used for this purpose. However, different values for the adopted cross section can be readily implemented to accommodate user preference based on revised determinations of this quantity. The Atlas (n,n'γ) data has been compiled into a series of CSV-style ASCII data sets and a suite of Python scripts have been developed to build and install the database locally. The database can then be accessed directly through the SQLite engine, or using alternative methods such as the Jupyter Notebook Python-browser interface. Several examples exploiting different interaction methodologies are distributed with the complete software package.
