Temperature stability limits for an isothermal demagnetization refrigerator

It is pointed out that magnetic refrigeration can provide additional cooling for infrared detectors on space missions, taking into account the Shuttle Infrared Telescope Facility (SIRTF) and the Large Deployable Reflector (LDR). From a temperature of 2 K provided by the primary cryogens, magnetic refrigerators could cool bolometers or pumped photoconductors to 0.1 K or below. Such a reduction in operating temperature would increase the sensitivity for bolometers, while the response at longer wavelengths for pumped photoconductors would be improved. Two types of magnetic refrigeration cycles have been proposed. One type uses a complete demagnetization. The present investigation is concerned with the second type, which uses a feedback-controlled isothermal demagnetization, taking into account the temperature stability limits. Attention is given to control system resolution, thermometer noise, reaction time, and thermal time constants.

The relationship between the Zames representation and LQG compensators

Recently Zames (1981) has introduced the so-called model reference transformation which can be used to conveniently parameterize the class of linear time-invariant multivariable compensators that lead to stable feedback control systems. A very popular design methodology for designing stable and robust multivariable control systems is that based on the Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) methodology with Loop Transfer Recovery (LTR). Thus, it is natural to inquire upon the relationship between the Zames representation and the LQG/LTR compensators. This paper summarizes this relationship.

Optimal output feedback design of systems with ill-conditioned dynamics

Singular perturbation concepts are exploited to develop a procedure for designing a constant gain, output feedback control system. It is assumed that the original system is ill-conditioned in the sense that the plant contains widely separated dynamics, and that an accurate description for the high frequency behavior may not be available. The design procedure attempts to stabilize the system by minimizing a quadratic cost function made up of the control and states associated with a reduced order (low frequency) model for the plant, and a measure of stability for the neglected fast dynamics. The resulting design procedure does not require knowledge of the fast dynamics.

Disturbance-accommodating tracking maneuvers of flexible spacecraft

In this paper the problem of maneuvering a flexible spacecraft through a large angle is considered, where the disturbance-accommodating feedback control tracks a desired output state. The desired output state is provided from an open-loop solution for the linear system model. The components of the disturbance vector are assumed to be represented in terms of Fourier series. Closed-form solutions are provided for the Ricati, prefilter, state trajectory, and residual state trajectory equations which define the optimal control. Example maneuvers are presented where control-rate penalties have been included in the performance index for frequency-shaping, in order to smooth both the open- and closed-loop control commands.

Stability robustness improvement using constrained optimization techniques

In a multiloop feedback control system, stability margin improvement by singular value shaping can be achieved by a noise adjustment procedure. A direct method for shaping singular value spectrum using constrained optimization technique is described. The design algorithm minimizes a standard LQG performance index while trying to satisfy minimum singular value constraints at the plant input, or output, or at both. Selected parameters of a stabilizing control law are used as the design variables. The capabilities of this method are demonstrated using a two input two output system representing a drone aircraft and its lateral attitude control system.

A non-linear programming approach to the computer-aided design of regulators using a linear-quadratic formulation

A design technique is proposed for linear regulators in which a feedback controller of fixed structure is chosen to minimize an integral quadratic objective function subject to the satisfaction of integral quadratic constraint functions. Application of a non-linear programming algorithm to this mathematically tractable formulation results in an efficient and useful computer-aided design tool. Particular attention is paid to computational efficiency and various recommendations are made. Two design examples illustrate the flexibility of the approach and highlight the special insight afforded to the designer.

Variable-Friction Secondary Face Seals

Feedback-controlled friction or damping suppresses vibrations. Variable-friction secondary seal conceived to control vibration and stability of primary seal ring over wide range of conditions. By varying friction force or damping applied to primary seal ring, vibration controlled to provide stable operation. Advantages of "variablefriction secondary seal": face-seal stability controlled as function of primary-ring vibration amplitudes, and also friction remotely changed to achieve acceptable vibration amplitudes for large range of seal-operating conditions without compromising secondary-seal performance. Concept also useful in seal testing in which dynamic stability of face seals is under evaluation.

Design of suboptimal regulators for nonlinear systems

An optimal feedback control law is preferred for the regulation of a deterministic nonlinear system. In this paper, a practical, iterative design method leading to a sequence of suboptimal control laws with successively improved performance is presented. The design method requires the determination of an upper bound to the performance of each successive control law. This is obtained by solving a partial differential inequality by means of a linear programming technique. Robustness properties and the application of the design method to the control of a robot manipulator arm are also presented.

Evaluation of a high-torque backlash-free roller actuator

The results are presented of a test program that evaluated the stiffness, accuracy, torque ripple, frictional losses, and torque holding capability of a 16:1 ratio, 430 N-m (320 ft-lb) planetary roller drive for a potential space vehicle actuator application. The drive's planet roller supporting structure and bearings were found to be the largest contributors to overall drive compliance, accounting for more than half of the total. In comparison, the traction roller contacts themselves contributed only 9 percent of the drive's compliance based on an experimentally verified stiffness model. The drive exhibited no backlash although 8 arc sec of hysteresis deflection were recorded due to microcreep within the contact under torque load. Because of these load-dependent displacements, some form of feedback control would be required for arc second positioning applications. Torque ripple tests showed the drive to be extremely smooth, actually providing some damping of input torsional oscillations. The drive also demonstrated the ability to hold static torque with drifts of 7 arc sec or less over a 24 hr period at 35 percent of full load.

Dynamic sensing of 6-axis external force and moment applied to a robot end

A dynamic force sensing method is proposed for a robot manipulator. A 6-axis wrist force sensor which is commonly used for robot force sensing does not take the direct measurement of the force and moment applied to an end effector externally from the environment of the manipulator, but takes the resultant of the gravity, the inertial force and moment on the end effector, and the external force and moment. The separation of gravitational and inertial force and moment from the measurement of the force sensor is crucial to achieving dynamically accurate force sensing and fast manipulator motion under force feedback control. A mathematical model is derived for the force sensing process and the separation of the force and moment as a nonlinear optimal state estimation problem formulated. Then an approximate solution is given using extended Kalman filtering techniques.

Optimal discrete-time LQR problems for parabolic systems with unbounded input: Approximation and convergence

An abstract approximation and convergence theory for the closed-loop solution of discrete-time linear-quadratic regulator problems for parabolic systems with unbounded input is developed. Under relatively mild stabilizability and detectability assumptions, functional analytic, operator techniques are used to demonstrate the norm convergence of Galerkin-based approximations to the optimal feedback control gains. The application of the general theory to a class of abstract boundary control systems is considered. Two examples, one involving the Neumann boundary control of a one-dimensional heat equation, and the other, the vibration control of a cantilevered viscoelastic beam via shear input at the free end, are discussed.

On-line measurement of heat of combustion

An experimental method for an on-line measurement of heat of combustion of a gaseous hydrocarbon fuel mixture of unknown composition is developed. It involves combustion of a test gas with a known quantity of air to achieve a predetermined oxygen concentration level in the combustion products. This is accomplished by a feedback controller which maintains the gas volumetric flow rate at a level consistent with the desired oxygen concentration in the products. The heat of combustion is determined from a known correlation with the gas volumetric flow rate. An on-line microcomputer accesses the gas volumetric flow data, and displays the heat of combustion values at desired time intervals.

Reconstruction and robust reduced-order observation of flexible variables

This paper discusses reconstruction and estimation of flexible variables from multiple strain measurements for use in state feedback control of flexible manipulators. Reconstruction is proposed for obtaining flexible mode amplitudes from the measurements, and estimation for the modal velocities. Design of the observer for estimation of the velocities is discussed with regard to robust implementation. The performance of the observer is examined experimentally for several specifications of the error dynamics.
