Generalized quadratic weights for asymptotic regulator properties

This paper describes a generalized quadratic weight selection procedure based on asymptotic modal properties of linear-quadratic regulators as control weights tend to zero. Explicit formulas are developed for weighting matrices which produce an asymptotic eigen-structure consisting of p less than or equal to n-m finite modes, with the rest tending to infinity in selectable Butterworth patterns or determined by other secondary design considerations.

25-kW power module

The 25-kW power module design and operational characteristics and the benefits for payloads are presented. The module will allow the Shuttle Orbiter to be utilized on-orbit to its optimum capability of power and duration for sortie/Spacelab missions, and will provide central power-rich base for free-flyer payloads requiring increased electrical power and on-orbit stay-times of up to 5 years. Concepts of the module in the sortie and free-flyer modes are depicted with resource capabilities for experimentation in astronomy, solar physics, solar terrestrial observations, and materials processing which require long duration and/or high power missions. In the sortie mode operation the Orbiter fuel cell will be in an idle mode, with the 25-kW module providing payload power needs, and in the free-flyer mode the module will provide power needs to multiple payloads. Design considerations, the thermal control subsystem, the attitude control subsystem, command and data handling, and the electrical power subsystem are described.

Electromagnetic sensors for general lightning application

Electromagnetic sensors for general lightning applications in measuring environment are discussed as well as system response to the environment. This includes electric and magnetic fields, surface current and charge densities, and currents on conductors. Many EMP sensors are directly applicable to lightning measurements, but there are some special cases of lightning measurements involving direct strikes which require special design considerations for the sensors. The sensors and instrumentation used by NMIMT in collecting data on lightning at South Baldy peak in central New Mexico during the 1978 and 1979 lightning seasons are also discussed. The Langmuir Laboratory facilities and details of the underground shielded instrumentation room and recording equipment are presented.

Conductive surge testing of circuits and systems

Techniques are given for conductive surge testing of powered electronic equipment. The correct definitions of common and normal mode are presented. Testing requires not only spike-surge generators with a suitable range of open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current waveshapes, but also appropriate means, termed couplers, for connecting test surges to the equipment under test. Key among coupler design considerations is minimization of fail positives resulting from reduction in delivered surge energy due to the coupler. Back-filters and the lines on which they are necessary, are considered as well as ground-fault and ground potential rise. A method for monitoring delivered and resulting surge waves is mentioned.

A 4-W 56-dB gain microstrip amplifier at 15 GHz utilizing GaAs FET's and IMPATT diodes

Performance results and design considerations are presented for an all solid-state Ku-band power amplifier which is feasible for use in PM communication systems for airborne or spacecraft transmitter applications. A six-stage GaAs FET preamplifier and a driver and balanced power amplifier utilizing GaAs IMPATT diodes operating in the injection locked oscillator mode are discussed. For high power and efficiency Schottky-Read IMPATT's with low-high-low doping profiles are employed. For improved reliability the IMPATT's incorporate a TiW barrier metallization to retard degradation of the IMPATT's. Results of accelerated life testing of the IMPATT devices are also presented.

Pioneer Venus sounder and small probes Nephelometer instrument

The Nephelometer instrument flown on all four of the probes of the Pioneer Venus mission is described. The instruments functioned well, returning data on the backscattering properties of the Venusian clouds and ambient solar radiation in several wavelength intervals as a function of altitude at four widely separated planetary locations. The design considerations, instrument construction, calibration and performance are discussed.

Advanced development of a programmable power processor

The need for the development of a multipurpose flexible programmable power processor (PPP) has increased significantly in recent years to reduce ever rising development costs. One of the program requirements the PPP specification will cover is the 25 kW power module power conversion needs. The 25 kW power module could support the Space Shuttle program during the 1980s and 1990s and could be the stepping stone to future large space programs. Trades that led to selection of a microprocessor controlled power processor are briefly discussed. Emphasis is given to the power processing equipment that uses a microprocessor to provide versatility that allows multiple use and to provide for future growth by reprogramming output voltage to a higher level (to 120 V from 30 V). Component selection and design considerations are also discussed.

User's design handbook for a Standardized Control Module (SCM) for DC to DC Converters, volume 2

A unified design procedure is presented for selecting the key SCM control parameters for an arbitrarily given power stage configuration and parameter values, such that all regulator performance specifications can be met and optimized concurrently in a single design attempt. All key results and performance indices, for buck, boost, and buck/boost switching regulators which are relevant to SCM design considerations are included to facilitate frequent references.

The paper describes an advanced technology development which utilizes a high speed analog/binary CCD correlator to perform the matrix multiplications necessary to implement onboard feature classification. The matrix manipulation module uses the maximum likelihood classification algorithm assuming a Gaussian probability density function. Performance of large inert-gas thrusters

The performance of large inert-gas thrusters is predicted based on present knowledge of ion optics performance and discharge chamber operation. Calculated performance data are given for argon and xenon propellants. The effect of varying propellant utilization and thruster diameter is discussed and the optimum choice of beam diameter for very large systems is indicated for low, intermediate, and high specific impulses. Optimum discharge chamber depths are also specified. Although detailed design considerations may modify the predictions, the general trends indicated should still be useful for directing future technology efforts and evaluating mission studies involving large thrusters.
