Isolation and measurement of rotor vibration forces

Mounting for helicopter gearbox measures forces generated by rotor and isolates transmission from airframe. Mountings have frequency-dependent load/displacement relationship that gives statically rigid but dynamically soft support, lowering vibratory transfer. Previous isolation by springs or force-opposing devices required strain gages to measure rotor vibration and were operative at only one vibration frequency. Active system eliminates these limitations.

Dynamic behavior of a beam drag-force anemometer

A cantilevered beam with strain gages attached to the fixed ends and the minimax technique were used in an experiment conducted to determine the dynamic behavior of a drag-force anemometer in high frequency, unsteady flow. In steady flow the output of the anemometer is proportional to stream velocity head and flow angle. Fluid mechanics suggests that, in unsteady flow, the output would also be proportional to the rate of change of fluid velocity. It was determined that effects due to the rate of change of fluid velocity are negligible for the probe geometry and frequencies involved.

The AD-1 airplane was designed as a low cost, low speed manned research tool to evaluate the flying qualities of the oblique wing concept. The airplane is constructed primarily of foam and fiberglass and incorporates simplicity in terms of the onboard systems. There are no hydraulics, the control system is cable and torque tube, and the electrical systems consist of engine driven generators which power the battery for engine start, cockpit gages, trim motors, and the onboard data system. The propulsion systems consist of two Microturbo TRS-18 engines sea level trust rated at 220 pounds. The airplane weighs approximately 2100 pounds and has a performance potential in the range of 200 knots and an altitude of 15,000 feet.

The effects of thermal cycling on the thermal deformation of graphite-polyimide

The effects of repetitive thermal cycling on the thermal deformation of graphite-fiber-reinforced polyimide laminates are investigated. Unsymmetric and unidirectional laminate specimens were cycled in an oven between room temperature and 180 or 315 C five times, and temperature and deformation were recorded as a function of time in order to measure thermal deformation. The results of the lower temperature cycling reveal a hysteresis-like effect in the temperature-thermal deformation relation for a single cycle, while no differences are detected from one cycle to the next. The response of an eight-layer curved specimen is found to agree well with predictions based on a piecewise-linear lamination theory, however, four-layer laminate response could not be explained. The results of the high-temperature tests also indicate a dependence of the strain on whether the specimen was being heated or cooled, however quantitative results are considered unreliable, due to strain gage difficulties.

Measuring unsteady pressure on rotating compressor blades

The capability for accurate measurement of unsteady pressure on the surface of compressor and fan blades during engine operation was established. Tests were run on miniature semiconductor strain gage pressure transducers mounted in several arrangements. Both surface mountings and recessed flush mountings were tested. Test parameters included mounting arrangement, blade material, temperature, local strain in the blade, acceleration normal to the transducer diaphragm, centripetal acceleration, and pressure. Test results showed no failures of transducers or mountings and indicated an uncertainty of unsteady pressure measurement of approximately + or - 6%, plus 0.1 kPa for a typical application.

Cumulative slant path rain attenuation statistics associated with the Comstar beacon at 28.56 GHz for Wallops Island, Va.

The paper presents and characterizes the cumulative fade statistics for the 1 April 1977 to 31 March 1978 period for the Wallops Island site on the basis of direct measurements of a beacon signal at 28.56 GHz emanating from the Comstar geosynchronous satellite. Also presented are the month and time of day statistics as well as the rain gage rain-rate distribution. The concept of effective path length using the 28.56-GHz fade and measured rain-rate distributions are employed to predict the 19.04-GHz fade distribution. Predicted distributions for the year period are obtained from disdrometer data and radar results.

Magnetostriction of some rare earth-aluminum Laves phase compounds

Measurements of the linear and volume magnetostriction of RAl2 cubic Laves compounds in which R is one of the rare earth elements Gd, Dy, Ho or Er, at temperatures between 4.2 K and the Curie temperature of each compound, are reported. Magnetic fields up to 2.5 Tesla were applied, and magnetostriction was measured using standard strain gage techniques. Saturation magnetostrictions of 17 x 10 to the -6th, -1420 x 10 to the -6th, 60 x 10 to the -6th and -920 x 10 to the -6th are determined at 4.2 K for GdAl2, DyAl2, HoAl2 and ErAl2, respectively. Large forced magnetostriction is observed in GdAl2 above the saturation field and the strain temperature dependence shows a decrease in magnitude below 40 K. A linear dependence of magnetostriction on magnetic field was observed for DyAl2 above 40 K, and the observed temperature dependence is interpreted in terms of the lowest order single-ion magnetoelastic theory. An observed decrease in the magnitude of the strain of HoAl2 below 15 K is associated with a change of the easy direction of magnetization, while in the case of ErAl2, magnetostriction is observed to occur normally up to the Curie temperature. Large volume magnetostriction is obtained for all the compounds with the exception of GdAl2.

A hydrological analysis of east Australian floods using Nimbus-5 electrically scanning radiometer data

The chronological development and diminution of six floods in eastern Australia during January, February, and March 1974 were mapped for the first time by the Nimbus Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR). Day and nighttime ESMR (19.35 GHz) coverage was analyzed for the low gradient, flooded Darling River system in New South Wales. Apparent movement of surface water as indicated by low brightness temperatures (less than 250 K, day and less than 240 K, night) was easily followed around the curved runoff basin along the northern shoreline of the flooded Darling River during this 3-month period. This pattern was in good agreement with flood crest data at selected river height gage stations, even under cloudy conditions.

An ultrasonic plethysmograph for space flight applications

The development of an ultrasonic plethysmograph based on the transit time measurement principle is reported, which meets the space-imposed requirements for evaluating cardiovascular deconditioning. It consists of a pulse generator, pulse receiver amplifier, voltage comparator, synchronous pulse generator, elapsed time counter, and transmit and receive piezoelectric crystals resonant at 2 MHz and of 3 mm diameter. The transit time for an ultrasonic pulse to propagate across a limb cross section is computed in a digital fashion using a 32 MHz clock, and resolution is 0.049 mm with the range being approximately 200 mm. Experimental results regarding dynamic system response were found comparable in both accuracy and sensitivity to those of a Whitney strain gage using a 50 torr venous occlusion.

Preliminary design of composite wing-box structures for global damage tolerance

A procedure is presented that incorporates the influence of potential global damage conditions into the design process for minimum-mass wing-box structures. The procedure is based on mathematical-programming optimization techniques. Material-strength, minimum-gage, and panel-buckling constraints are introduced by penalty functions, and Newton's method with approximate second derivatives of the penalty terms is used as the search algorithm to obtain minimum-mass designs. A potential global damage condition is represented by a structural model with the damaged components removed. Example minimum-mass designs are obtained that simultaneously satisfy the constraints of the damaged and undamaged configurations of both graphite-epoxy and aluminum wing-box structural models. These examples are designed with and without the influence of potential damage conditions, and results indicate that for equal mass cases the residual strength of a damaged structure is higher when the influence of potential damage is properly included in the design from the outset. Results of these examples also identify the minimum structural mass increase required to increase residual strength levels.

Preliminary measurements of aerodynamic damping of a transonic compressor rotor

The aeroelastic behavior of a transonic compressor rotor operated in the MIT Blowdown Compressor Facility has been examined by means of piezoelectric motion sensors at the base of each of the 23 blades. Excitation has been observed due to rotating stall, due to an incipient flutter, and due to the facility startup transient. A method has been found for determining the aerodynamic damping force by modal analysis of the blade motion. Application of this technique to the example of excitation by rotating stall has led to the conclusions that the blade loading decreases in the stall cell, and that the damping force on the blades in the clean flow is in phase with blade velocity but opposite it in sign, leading to a logarithmic decrement of 0.2. This method of force derivation has quite general applicability as it requires only blade motion data such as are routinely acquired with strain gages. It is argued that models are needed for aerodynamic damping which focus on the effects of near neighbors of a given blade, since flutter often results in large response of isolated blades or small groups of blades.

Full-scale wind-tunnel investigation of the effects of wing leading-edge modifications on the high angle-of-attack aerodynamic characteristics of a low-wing general aviation airplane

The paper presents the results of a recent investigation to determine the effects of wing leading-edge modifications on the high angle-of-attack aerodynamic characteristics of a low-wing general aviation airplane in the Langley Full-Scale Wind Tunnel. The investigation was conducted to provide aerodynamic information for correlation and analysis of flight-test results obtained for the configuration. The wind-tunnel investigation consisted of force and moment measurements, wing pressure measurements, flow surveys, and flow visualization studies utilizing a tuft grid, smoke and nonintrusive mini-tufts which were illuminated by ultra-violet light. In addition to the tunnel scale system which measured overall forces and moments, the model was equipped with an auxiliary strain-gage balance within the left wing panel to measure lift and drag forces on the outer wing panel independent of the tunnel scale system. The leading-edge modifications studied included partial- and full-span leading-edge droop arrangements as well as leading-edge slats.
