Navigation Results from Desert Field Tests of the Rocky 7 Mars Rover Prototype

Upcoming missions to the surface of Mars will use mobile robots to traverse long distances from the landing site. To prepare enabling technologies for these missions, the protype rover, Rocky 7, has been tested in desert field trials conducted with a team of planetary scientists.

The Results of Dynamic Data Acquisition During Mars Pathfinder Prototype Airbag Drop Testing

The Mars Pathfinder mission, scheduled for launch in December 1996, will use an airbag system to safely deliver a lander to the Martian surface. The airbag landing system has undergone a comprehensive test program during its evolution from initial design phase to final qualification and acceptance testing. This paper outlines the test approach used in the airbag development program, describes the data acquisition system used to obtain and evaluate airbag performance data, and presents test results.

Test Structures for Rapid Prototyping of Gas and Pressure Sensors

A multi-project ceramic substrate was used in developing a gas sensor and pressure sensor. The ceramic substrate cantained 36 chips with six variants including sensors, process control monitors, and an interconnect ship. Tha gas sensor is being developed as an air quality monitor and the pressure gauge as a barometer.

A Prototype System for Ground Control Space Telerobotics

A telerobotics system is described which provides supervised autonomous control capability for time-delayed ground-remote control applications. The system includes a local site operator interface for interactive task description and a remote site task execution system. Interactive stereo graphics overlay on video is provided at the local site to update the remote environmental model. The remote site system is capable of nominal task execution as well as monitoring and reflex action. Execution utilizes multiple control modules which execute based upon command parameterization.

Prototyping and FPGA-based MAP synchronizer for very high rate FQPSK

While fundamental formulations of maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimation for symbol timing [1] have been in exisence for some time, it has generally not seen widespread usage in communications receivers due to its relatively greater complexity in comparison to other designs. However, MAP has been shown to provide significant performance advantages for the acquisition and tracking of digital modulations under low SNR conditions when compared to traditional techniques, such as the data transition tracking loop [2].
