Quasioptical modeling of wave beams with and without mode conversion. IV. Numerical simulations of waves in dissipative media

We report the first quasi-optical simulations of wave beams in a hot plasma using the quasi-optical code PARADE (PAraxial RAy DEscription) [K. Yanagihara, I. Y. Dodin, and S. Kubo, Phys. Plasmas 26, 072112 (2019)]. This code is unique in that it accounts for inhomogeneity of the dissipation-rate across the beam and mode conversion simultaneously. We show that the dissipation-rate inhomogeneity shifts beams relative to their trajectories in cold plasma and that the two electromagnetic modes are coupled via this process, an effect that was ignored in the past. Additionally, we propose a simplified approach to account for the dissipation-rate inhomogeneity. This approach is computationally inexpensive and simplifies the analysis of actual experiments.

Spectral dispersion of the linewidth enhancement factor and four wave mixing conversion efficiency of an InAs/GaAs multimode quantum dot laser

The spectral dependence of the linewidth enhancement factor (αH-factor) of a multimode InAs/GaAs quantum dot laser is analyzed. Amplified spontaneous and high-frequency modulation methods are used to experimentally retrieve the αH-factor of each longitudinal mode below and above the threshold. A dispersion of the αH-factor is unlocked across the entire optical spectrum, which is further illustrated in the context of four wave mixing experiments. The results show that the induced conversion efficiency is increased at lasing wavelengths where the linewidth enhancement is lower. These results highlight the importance of carefully monitoring the linewidth enhancement factor in quantum dot lasers especially for frequency combs and mode-locking applications in future optical communication systems.

Efficient charge to spin conversion in iridium oxide thin films

Many 5d transition metal oxides have a unique electronic structure, where the density of states near the Fermi level is dominated by only 5d electrons with strong spin–orbit coupling. IrO 2 , a Dirac nodal line semi-metal, is the simplest of these oxides. The presence of 5d electrons and gap opening of Dirac nodal lines via strong spin–orbit coupling allows for the hybridization of the 5d electrons of the oxide with the itinerant d electrons of a ferromagnet, while simultaneously increasing the intrinsic spin Hall effect. We report large charge-to-spin conversion in thin films of this material using spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance experiments. Finally, by independently performing line shape analysis and linewidth modulation experiments, we conclusively determine the spin Hall angle of optimized IrO 2 films to be ∼8 times larger than that of Pt.

Dynamic in-context learning with conversational models for data extraction and materials property prediction

The advent of natural language processing and large language models (LLMs) has revolutionized the extraction of data from unstructured scholarly papers. However, ensuring data trustworthiness remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we introduce PropertyExtractor, an open-source tool that leverages advanced conversational LLMs such as Google gemini-pro and OpenAI gpt-4, blends zero-shot with few-shot in-context learning, and employs engineered prompts for the dynamic refinement of structured information hierarchies—enabling autonomous, efficient, scalable, and accurate identification, extraction, and verification of material property data. Our tests on material data demonstrate precision and recall that exceed 95% with an error rate of ∼9%, highlighting the effectiveness and versatility of the toolkit. Finally, databases for 2D material thicknesses, a critical parameter for device integration, and energy bandgap values are developed using PropertyExtractor. In particular, for the thickness database, the rapid evolution of the field has outpaced both experimental measurements and computational methods, creating a significant data gap. Our work addresses this gap and showcases the potential of PropertyExtractor as a reliable and efficient tool for the autonomous generation of various material property databases, advancing the field.

High spatial resolution direct conversion amorphous selenium X-ray detectors with monolithically integrated CMOS readout

Recent progress in the field of micron-scale spatial resolution direct conversion X-ray detectors for high-energy synchrotron light sources serve applications ranging from nondestructive and noninvasive microscopy techniques which provide insight into the structure and morphology of crystals, to medical diagnostic measurement devices. Amorphous selenium ( a -Se) as a wide-bandgap thermally evaporated photoconductor exhibits ultra-low thermal generation rates for dark carriers and has been extensively used in X-ray medical imaging. Being an amorphous material, it can further be deposited over large areas at room temperatures and at substantially lower costs as compared to crystalline semiconductors. Here, to address the demands for a high-energy and high spatial resolution X-ray detector for synchrotron light source applications, we have thermally evaporated a -Se on a Mixed-Mode Pixel Array Detector (MM-PAD) Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC). The ASIC format consists of 128 × 128 square pixels each 150 μm on a side. A 200 μm a -Se layer was directly deposited on the ASIC followed by a metal top electrode. The completed detector assembly was tested with 45 kV Ag and 23 kV Cu X-ray tube sources. The detector fabrication, performances, Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) measurements, and simulations are reported.

Experimental generation of polarization entanglement from spontaneous parametric down-conversion pumped by spatiotemporally highly incoherent light

Here, we investigate the cross influence of the pump coherence on the entanglement produced from spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) in different degrees of freedom (DOFs). We experimentally demonstrate the generation of polarization entanglement from SPDC pumped by a spatiotemporally highly incoherent (STHI) light-emitting diode. Our quantum state tomography measurements using multimode collection fibers to avoid postselection yield a two-qubit state with the concurrence of 0.531 ± 0.006 and purity of 0.647 ± 0.005, in excellent agreement with our theoretically predicted concurrence of 0.552 and purity of 0.652. We find that using an STHI pump reduces the entanglement and purity of the output polarization two-qubit state due to a coupling between the spatiotemporal and polarization DOFs introduced by the birefringence and dispersion of the nonlinear crystal. The viability of SPDC with STHI pumps is important for two reasons: (i) STHI sources are ubiquitous and available at a wider range of wavelengths than lasers, and (ii) the generated STHI polarization-entangled two-photon states could potentially be useful in long-distance quantum communication schemes due to their robustness to scattering.

Continuous and Time-Domain Coherent Signal Conversion between Optical and Microwave Frequencies

A quantum network consisting of computational nodes connected by high-fidelity communication channels could expand information-processing capabilities significantly beyond those of classical networks. Superconducting qubits hold promise for scalable and high-fidelity quantum computation at microwave frequencies but must operate in an isolated cryogenic environment, obviating the potential for practical long-range communication. Quantum communication has, however, been demonstrated with optical photons. A fast efficient quantum-coherent interface between superconducting qubits and optical photons would provide a key resource for a large-scale quantum network or distributed quantum computer. Here, we describe the design and experimental operation of a device incorporating a silicon optomechanical nanobeam combined with an aluminum-nitride-based electromechanical transducer. We experimentally demonstrate classical continuous-wave operation of this device at room temperature with external conversion efficiencies of (2.5 +/- 0.4) x 10 -5 (microwave to optical) and (3.8 +/- 0.4) x 10 -5 (optical to microwave), corresponding to internal efficiencies of 2.4% and 3.7%, respectively. Finally, this device also has a larger bandwidth than previous efficient microwave-optical transducers, allowing us to operate in the time domain with 20-ns pulses.

Ion irradiation induced crystalline disorder accelerates interfacial phonon conversion and reduces thermal boundary resistance

Traditional understanding of the thermal boundary resistance (TBR) across solid-solid interfaces posits that the vibrational densities of states overlap between materials dictates interfacial energy transport, with phonon scattering occurring at the interface. Using atomistic simulations, we show a mechanism for control of TBR; point defects near an interface can lead to both short- and midrange disorder, accelerating the conversion of vibrational energy between bulk and interfacial modes, ultimately reducing the TBR. In conclusion, we experimentally demonstrate this reduction through ion irradiation of gallium nitride and subsequently measuring the TBR across Al/GaN interfaces.

Chiral kinematic theory and converse vortical effects

Response theories in condensed matter typically describe the response of an electron fluid to external electromagnetic fields, while perturbations on neutral particles are often designed to mimic such fields. Here, we study the response of fermions to a space-time-dependent velocity field, thereby sidestepping the issue of gauge charge. First, we use a semiclassical chiral kinematic theory to obtain the local density of current and extract the orbital magnetization. The theory immediately predicts a "converse vortical effect," defined as an orbital magnetization driven by linear velocity. It receives contributions from magnetic moments on the Fermi surface and the Berry curvature of the occupied bands. Then, transcending semiclassics via a complementary Kubo formalism reveals that the uniform limit of a clean system receives only the Berry curvature contribution while other limits sense the Fermi surface magnetic moments too. We propose CoSi as a candidate material and suggest magnetometry of a sample under a thermal gradient to detect the effect. Overall, our study sheds light on the effects of a space-time-dependent velocity field on electron fluids and paves the way for exploring quantum materials using new probes and perturbations.

K-shell internal conversion coefficient for M4 decay of the 30.8 keV isomer in 93 Nb

The 30.8 keV (1/2) – isomeric state in $^{93}_{41}$Nb decays by an M4 transition to the (9/2) + ground state. Here, we have measured the K-shell internal conversion coefficient α K for this transition in order to test the validity of current methods of calculation for a case with relatively low atomic number, low transition energy, and a high value of α K . Taking the fluorescence yield of niobium to be 0.751(4), we obtain α K = 2.56(9) × 10 4 , a result that agrees with the Dirac-Fock calculations that take into account the presence of a K vacancy in the final state, and disagrees by 1.7 standard deviations with calculations that ignore the vacancy. We also determine the energy of the isomeric state to be 30.760(5) keV, a fourfold improvement in precision over the currently accepted value.

Cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy of electrons from tritium $β$ decay and 83m Kr internal conversion

Project 8 has developed a novel technique, cyclotron radiation emission spectroscopy (CRES), for direct neutrino mass measurements. A CRES-based experiment on the beta spectrum of tritium has been carried out in a small-volume apparatus. Here, we provide a detailed account of the experiment, focusing on systematic effects and analysis techniques. In a Bayesian (frequentist) analysis, we measure the tritium endpoint as ${18}$ ${553}_{—19}^{+18}$ (${18}$ ${548}_{—19}^{+19}$) eV and set upper limits of 155 (152) eV (90% C.L.) on the neutrino mass. No background events are observed beyond the endpoint in 82 days of running. We also demonstrate an energy resolution of 1.66 ± 0.19 eV in a resolution-optimized magnetic trap configuration by measuring 83m Kr 17.8-keV internal-conversion electrons. These measurements establish CRES as a low-background, high-resolution technique with the potential to advance neutrino mass sensitivity

Fast neutrino flavor conversion modes in multidimensional core-collapse supernova models: The role of the asymmetric neutrino distributions

A dense neutrino gas, such as the one anticipated in the supernova environment, can experience fast neutrino flavor conversions on scales much shorter than those expected in vacuum probably provided that the angular distributions of ν e and $\bar{v}_e$ cross each other. We perform a detailed investigation of the neutrino angular distributions obtained by solving the Boltzmann equations for fixed matter profiles of some representative snapshots during the postbounce phase of core-collapse supernovae in multidimensional calculations of a 11.2 M ⊙ and a 27 M ⊙ progenitor model. Although the 11.2 M ⊙ model features ν e - $\bar{v}_e$ angular crossings and the associated fast modes at different time snapshots, the 27 M ⊙ model does not show any crossings within the decoupling region. We show that this can be understood by studying the multipole components of the neutrino distributions. In fact, there is a higher chance for the occurrence of ν e - $\bar{v}_e$ angular crossings for the zones where the multipole components of the neutrino distributions are strong enough. We also show that there can exist more than one crossing between the angular distributions of ν e and $\bar{v}_e$. In addition, apart from the crossings within the neutrino decoupling region, there is a class of ν e - $\bar{v}_e$ angular crossings that appears very deep inside the protoneutron star.

Three-flavor collective neutrino conversions with multi-azimuthal-angle instability in an electron-capture supernova model

We investigate the multi-azimuthal angle (MAA) effect on collective neutrino oscillation by considering the three-dimensional neutrino momentum distribution in a realistic electron-capture supernova model with an 8.8 M ⊙ progenitor. We find that the MAA effect induces collective flavor conversions at epochs when it is completely suppressed under the axial-symmetric approximation. This novel activity is switched on/off by the growth of the MAA instability and imprints additional time evolution in the expected neutrino event rate. We validate our results by extending the linear stability analysis into the three-flavor scheme including mixing angles, and confirm that the onset of collective neutrino oscillation matches the steep growth of flavor instability. Furthermore, we discuss how the MAA effect alters neutrino detection at Super-Kamiokande and DUNE.

New method for detecting fast neutrino flavor conversions in core-collapse supernova models with two-moment neutrino transport

Fast-pairwise neutrino oscillations potentially affect many aspects of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe): the explosion mechanism, neutrino signals, and nucleosynthesis in the ejecta. This particular mode of collective neutrino oscillations has a deep connection to the angular structure of neutrinos in momentum space; for instance, the appearance of electron-neutrino lepton number (ELN) angular crossings in momentum space is a good indicator of the occurrence of flavor conversions. However, many multidimensional CCSN simulations are carried out with approximate neutrino transport (such as two-moment methods), which limits access to the angular distributions of neutrinos, i.e., inhibits ELNcrossing searches. In this paper, we develop a new method of searching for ELN crossing in these CCSN simulations. The required data is the zeroth and first angular moments of neutrinos and the matter profile, all of which are available in CCSN models with the two-moment method. One of the novelties of our new method is the use of a ray-tracing neutrino transport to determine ELNs in the direction of the stellar center. It is designed to compensate for shortcomings of the crossing searches with only two angular moments. We assess the capability of the method by carrying out a detailed comparison with results of full Boltzmann neutrino transport in 1D and 2D CCSN models. In this work, we find that the ray-tracing neutrino transport improves the accuracy of crossing searches; indeed, the appearance/disappearance of the crossings is accurately detected even in the region of forward-peaked angular distributions. The new method is computationally cheap and has the benefit of efficient parallelization; hence, it will be useful for ELN-crossing searches in any CCSN models that employ two-moment neutrino transport.

Thermal energy transport in laser-driven high x-ray conversion efficiency metallic silver nanowire foams

Here, we report on record brightness from Ag x-ray emission obtained using a novel laser-produced plasma source. The reported K-shell conversion efficiency of nearly 1% with a radiant energy of ≈ 0.6 kJ/sr from Ag ions is the highest presently recorded and is about twofold greater than more conventional metal-lined cavity targets. He-like Ag ions are the dominant radiators at ≈ 22.7 keV, which contrast the x-ray sources from other pulse power facilities that produce K-shell x-rays from Auger processes in near-neutral ions driven by the nonthermal hot electrons produced in the Z-pinch implosion. The reported x-ray emission was produced from a 4-mm-diameter, 4-mm-long underdense silver nanowire target at 10⁢ mg/⁢cm 3 . The National Ignition Facility laser beams deposited ≈ 1000 kJ of 3ω light into the target with a ≈ 400 TW, 2.5 ns square pulse. Finally, we show via comparisons of data with radiation-hydrodynamics simulations that flux-limited classical thermal energy transport models are inadequate in correctly modeling the behavior of these non-local thermodynamic equilibrium plasmas.

Green Bank and Effelsberg Radio Telescope Searches for Axion Dark Matter Conversion in Neutron Star Magnetospheres

Axion dark matter (DM) may convert to radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation in the strong magnetic fields around neutron stars. The radio signature of such a process would be an ultranarrow spectral peak at a frequency determined by the mass of the axion particle. In this work, we analyze data we collected from the Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope in the L band and the Effelsberg 100-m Telescope in the $\textit{L}$ band and $\textit{S}$ band from a number of sources expected to produce bright signals of axion-photon conversion, including the Galactic center of the Milky Way and the nearby isolated neutron stars RX J0720.4-3125 and RX J0806.4-4123. We find no evidence for axion DM and are able to set constraints on the existence of axion DM in the highly motivated mass range between ~ 5 and 11 μ eV with the strongest constraints to date on axions in the ~10–11 μ eV range.

Conversion of Magnetic Energy to Plasma Kinetic Energy During Guide Field Magnetic Reconnection in the Laboratory

Here, we present laboratory measurements showing the two-dimensional (2D) structure of energy conversion during magnetic reconnection with a guide field over the electron and ion diffusion regions, resolving the separate energy deposition on electrons and ions. We find that the electrons are energized by the parallel electric field at two locations, at the X line and around the separatrices. On the other hand, the ions are energized ballistically by the perpendicular electric field in the vicinity of the high-density separatrices. An energy balance calculation by evaluating the terms of the Poynting theorem shows that 40% of the magnetic energy is converted to particle energy, 2/3 of which is transferred to ions and 1/3 to electrons. Further analysis suggests that the energy deposited on particles manifests mostly in the form of thermal kinetic energy in the diffusion regions.

Positive Neutrino Masses with DESI DR2 via Matter Conversion to Dark Energy

The Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) is a massively parallel spectroscopic survey on the Mayall telescope at Kitt Peak, which has released measurements of baryon acoustic oscillations determined from over 14 million extragalactic targets. We combine DESI Data Release 2 with CMB datasets to search for evidence of matter conversion to dark energy (DE), focusing on a scenario mediated by stellar collapse to cosmologically coupled black holes (CCBHs). In this physical model, which has the same number of free parameters as Λ⁢CDM, DE production is determined by the cosmic star formation rate density (SFRD), allowing for distinct early- and late-time cosmologies. Using two SFRDs to bracket current observations, we find that the CCBH model: accurately recovers the cosmological expansion history, agrees with early-time baryon abundance measured by BBN, reduces tension with the local distance ladder, and relaxes constraints on the summed neutrino mass ∑𝑚 𝜈 . For these SFRDs, we find a peaked positive ∑𝑚 𝜈 < 0.149 eV (95% confidence) and ∑𝑚 𝜈 = 0.106$^{+0.050}_{−0.069}$ eV, respectively, in good agreement with lower limits from neutrino oscillation experiments. A peak in ∑𝑚 𝜈 > 0 results from late-time baryon consumption in the CCBH scenario and is expected to be a general feature of any model that converts sufficient matter to dark energy during and after reionization.
