Analysis of organogenic compounds in Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar samples.

DCl was used to distinguish hydrocarbons produced by acid treatment from hydrocarbons originally present in the samples when volatiles released by acid and thermal treatments from Apollo 11, 12, and 14 lunar samples were studied by quadrupole mass spectrometry and gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Multiple ion plotting permitted separation of deuterated from nondeuterated hydrocarbons in the DCl products. Stepwise thermal treatment was used to distinguish the source of the volatile compounds. The presence of LM rocket exhaust products was traced in two samples, and the presence of high-temperature stable nitrides in some samples is indicated.

Compounds of carbon and other volatile elements in Apollo 14 and 15 samples.

DF dissolution and pyrolysis showed that the indigenous methane and ethane contents in Apollo 14 and 15 lunar samples correlated with the amounts of solar wind gases and the deutero-carbon reaction gases. Pyrolysis evolved mainly CO and N2 and lower amounts of CO2. Other compounds detected and quantitated by these techniques were DCN, HCN, CS2, D2S, and PD3.

Optical analysis of a compound quasi-microscope for planetary landers

A quasi-microscope concept, consisting of facsimile camera augmented with an auxiliary lens as a magnifier, was introduced and analyzed. The performance achievable with this concept was primarily limited by a trade-off between resolution and object field; this approach leads to a limiting resolution of 20 microns when used with the Viking lander camera (which has an angular resolution of 0.04 deg). An optical system is analyzed which includes a field lens between camera and auxiliary lens to overcome this limitation. It is found that this system, referred to as a compound quasi-microscope, can provide improved resolution (to about 2 microns ) and a larger object field. However, this improvement is at the expense of increased complexity, special camera design requirements, and tighter tolerances on the distances between optical components.

Production development of organic nonflammable spacecraft potting, encapsulating and conformal coating compounds. Volume 4: Executive summary

The necessity of having nonflammable versions of potting and encapsulating compounds and conformal coatings for space vehicles is discussed. The formulation, EPOCAST 87517 A/B, was found to have the best balance of thermal, electrical, mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of those evaluated. The requirements which this formulation did not meet are listed, and other formulations which were evaluated are summarized. Recommendations for improving EPOCAST 87517 A/B are included.

Superconducting compounds and alloys research

Resistivity measurements as a function of temperature were performed on alloys of the binary material system In sub(1-x) Bi sub x for x varying between 0 and 1. It was found that for all single-phase alloys (the pure elements, alpha-In, and the three intermetallic compounds) at temperatures sufficiently above the Debye-temperature, the resistivity p can be expressed as p = a sub o T(n), where a sub o and n are composition-dependent constants. The same exponential relationship can also be applied for the sub-system In-In2Bi, when the two phases are in compositional equilibrium. Superconductivity measurements on single and two-phase alloys can be explained with respect to the phase diagram. There occur three superconducting phases (alpha-In, In2Bi, and In5Bi3) with different transition temperatures in the alloying system. The magnitude of the transition temperatures for the various intermetallic phases of In-Bi is such that the disappearance or occurrence of a phase in two component alloys can be demonstrated easily by means of superconductivity measurements.

Estimate of late 1974 stratospheric concentration of gaseous chlorine compounds /ClX/

The total concentration (ClX) versus altitude of Cl-containing molecules (principally HCl, Cl, ClO) is estimated. It is shown that the predicted present stratospheric concentrations are due to photolysis near 30 km of man-made CF2Cl2 and CFCl3, and CCl4 from a ground-level source, either man-made or natural. The contribution of CH3Cl to stratospheric ClX is evaluated from preliminary measurements of the compound at ground level. Although ground-level sources of HCl and Cl2 are large, tropospheric processes preclude significant impact on the stratosphere.

Ternary compound thin film solar cells

A group of ternary compound semiconductor (I-III-VI2) thin films for future applications in photovoltaic devices is proposed. The consideration of these materials (CuInSe2, CuInTe2 and especially CuInS2) for long range device development is emphasized. Much of the activity to date has been concerned with the growth and properties of CuInX2 films. X-ray and electron diffraction analyses, Hall mobility and coefficient, resistivity and carrier concentration variations with substrate and film temperature as well as grain size data have been determined. Both p- and n-type films of CuInS2 and CuInSe2 have been produced. Single and double source deposition techniques have been utilized. Some data have been recorded for annealed films.

On the sputtering of binary compounds

A simple physical model is presented to describe some aspects of the sputtering of compound targets. In particular, expressions are developed for the partial sputtering yields for binary systems in terms of the elemental sputtering rates, the stoichiometric concentrations and surface binding energy. The partial yields depend non-linearly on the bulk target concentrations. Comparison of the theoretical predictions with the data on sputtering of PtSi, NiSi and Cu3Au indicates that the general features are well described.

Spectra and structure of organophosphorus compounds. XII - Infrared and Raman spectra of /CH3/2PH and /CD3/2PH

The vibrational spectra of (CH3)2PH and (CD3)2PH have been studied and assignments made. In the infrared, the region between 4000 and 33 wavelength/cm was recorded for the gaseous and solid states, while Raman spectra from 3500 to 10 wavelength/cm in the gaseous, liquid and solid states were observed. There is some evidence of weak hydrogen bonding, based on the behavior of the phosphorus-hydrogen stretching and bending modes. There also appears to be considerable interaction between the methyl rocking and phosphorus-carbon stretching modes. The a double prime and a prime torsional modes appear to be accidentally degenerate at 182 and 142 wavelength/cm for the 'light' and 'heavy' compounds, respectively. This gives barriers of 2.14 and 2.30 kcal/mole, respectively.

A survey of kinetic data of compounds containing flourine

Chlorofluoromethanes may have a significant effect on the level of ozone in the atmosphere. However, the role of fluroine-containing compounds has not been examined fully. A tabulation of a search of the chemical kinetic literature published between 1953 and July 1975, is presented. The data are then evaluated with respect to acceptability and importance to the overall reaction balance in the atmosphere. Possible future research to elucidate important reaction processes is discussed.

Compounds in airborne particulates - Salts and hydrocarbons

Concentrations of 10 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), the aliphatics as a group, sulfate, nitrate, fluoride, acidity, and carbon in the airborne particulate matter were measured at 16 sites in Cleveland, OH over a 1-year period during 1971 and 1972. Analytical methods used included gas chromatography, colorimetry, and combustion techniques. Uncertainties in the concentrations associated with the sampling procedures, and the analytical methods are evaluated. The data are discussed relative to other studies and source origins. High concentrations downwind of coke ovens for 3,4 benzopyrene are discussed. Hydrocarbon correlation studies indicated no significant relations among compounds studied.
