Schema Elements for Granta Annual Report: FY2024

Granta: Materials Intelligence (Granta: MI) is a commercial database software distributed by Ansys, Inc. that is utilized by the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) to organize and store relevant materials data. Lack of standard and well-documented database schema is the primary obstacle to an NSE materials data management solution, so the objective of this project is to create and document such a schema. In FY21, an approach for designing, documenting, and managing a standard database schema was described based on the creation of schema elements (collections of attributes used to describe particular aspects of the data) to be used as building blocks for creating various database tables without duplication. In FY22, these methods were applied through a multi-site collaboration to create and document the schema elements necessary to build a thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) testing table. In FY23 the schema was expanded to include elements for a differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) table, along with schema for supporting metadata tables including Instruments, Projects, Documents, and Testing Series. In FY24 the following progress was made, again through multi-site collaboration: • The existing schema elements were modified to accommodate thermomechanical analysis (TMA) data, and a table, Test Data: TMA, was created for managing TMA data. • The elements necessary for the following additive manufacturing (AM) data tables (directed at data specific to selective laser sintering AM technology) were created: • AM Builds • AM Processes • AM Part Designs • Built AM Parts • AM Feedstock Materials • AM Feedstock Material Batches • The elements necessary for creating a Calibrated Material Models table were created, and the Calibrated Material Models table was created. In FY25 the existing schema will be deployed on the production enterprise Granta instance on the enterprise secure network. Schema elements will be appended, and new elements created as necessary, to allow the creation of tables specifically to support materials testing, AM process development, and design and analysis for modernization programs.

DigiFloat (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

This purpose of this report is to document the development of a floating offshore wind platform Digital Twin for the ARPA-E-funded DigiFloat project led by Principle Power, Inc. In Offshore Wind, Digital Twins are aimed at reducing farm-wide OPEX expenditures through reduced-basis inspection, assessing life extension methods, and obtaining better knowledge of the deployed assets for future product optimization. There is a high level of technical effectiveness and economic feasibility for the technology investigated, as it uses commercial off-the-shelf sensors, and a commercial software package. A substantial portion of the project goals are improvement of existing technology for use with floating wind turbines, and new application of an existing technology to a rapidly-growing sector. A few sensors applied to a small number of units bring benefit to the entire fleet of floating wind turbines in a given farm, and in other future wind farms. The benefits to the public of this project are further optimization and maturation of floating wind technology, to bring it to the U.S. market faster and cheaper.

Field Validation of Cloud Properties Sensor Field Campaign Report

The purpose of this campaign is to deploy Aerodyne Research Inc.’s extended wavelength cloud optical properties sensor (TWST-EN) in an operationally relevant environment with co-located, validated sensors. The Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s Southern Great Plains (SGP) observatory is ideal for this deployment because of the variety of operational sensors that can measure some of the same cloud properties using different modalities. While cloud property sensors have long existed, they tend to be costly to produce and maintain. Our sensor measures absolute spectral radiance in the two bands and will retrieve cloud optical depth (COD), droplet effective radius, and thermodynamic phase. Our prototype is built predominantly from off-the-shelf components and uses uncooled spectrometers. A lower-cost, easy-to-use sensor such as this could allow deployment at many more sites for greater spatial coverage. Analysis and retrieval algorithm development using the data from this deployment has been a central technical objective of our U.S. Department of Energy Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) Phase 2 contract (DE-SC0020473: Low-Cost Shortwave Spectroradiometer for Retrieval of Cloud Properties).

CalWave's xWave Design for PacWave (Final Technical Report)

CalWave Inc. (CalWave) is developing a wave energy converter (WEC) technology that can generate electricity from ocean waves. CalWave’s design offers a unique approach to wave energy conversion that operates fully submerged and can actively adjust the wave excitation. This capability gives the architecture enhanced survivability in ocean storms without adding significant costs. Prior to this project, CalWave had completed a demonstration of a fully functional WEC system in an open ocean demonstration at nominal 1:5 scale under FOA 1663. The goal of this project was the detailed design, following relevant standards and industry best-practices, of a variant of the xWave WEC technology that can safely and efficiently operate at the DOE’s PacWave South test site for a targeted deployment of up two years. The WEC design and associated review processes proceeded in two distinct project phases: a ‘Preliminary’ and a ‘Final’ design phase. The first phase of the project consisted of the systematic design of the WEC’s key features with regards to appropriate IEC standards. The work resulted in a preliminary design of the xWave hull including structural and Power Take-Off (PTO) load estimates, as well as performance estimates for all ocean conditions the WEC would operate in at PacWave South. Following the first open-water demonstration of CalWave’s small-scale “x1” device under FOA 1663, lessons learned were fed directly into a comprehensive review of the xWave design in the second design phase of this FOA project. CalWave’s work was supported by Sandia National Lab (SNL) and the National Renewable Energy Lab (NREL) on the holistic WEC design, and detailed feedback from specialized partners on hull design, mooring and anchoring specification, and electrical grid interconnection. Optimization of the WEC system was performed using a novel numerical optimization tool developed by Sandia and optimization trends were confirmed via an experimental model scale tank test campaign. Performance estimates for PacWave and a detailed xWave design including integration of all relevant system components were concluded. The mooring design was also concluded in the Final design phase using the most up to date sea floor characterization (CPT) data.

Workshop Report: Rural Electric Cooperative Distributed Energy Resource Business Model Development Workshops

The United States' energy future is being shaped by decades of technology innovation, rapidly changing consumer requirements, and governmental focus on securing reliable, low-cost energy sources. With expanded electrification and increased emphasis on grid reliability coupled with the heightened complexity and risks associated with transmission infrastructure, the use of distributed energy resources (DERs) is more commonly being considered a safe, efficient, and cost-effective way to maintain grid resilience and reliability. Amidst improvements in performance, decreasing costs, and unprecedented federal policy support for DERs, electric cooperatives are considering new opportunities to use these assets to ensure secure and reliable operations for millions of customers. In light of these developments, a series of workshops were held to collaborate on the development of business models for DERs in rural electric cooperative ecosystems. The first workshop was held July 11, 2024, at the Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. headquarters in Westminster, Colorado (hereafter referred to as the "Tri-State Workshop"). The second workshop was hosted by PNGC Power on Oct. 9, 2024, in Portland, Oregon (hereafter referred to as the "PNGC Power Workshop"). These workshops convened representatives from G&Ts, distribution cooperatives,2 the energy industry, the financial community, the U.S. government, national and regional organizations, and national laboratories to share perspectives on the unique needs, challenges, and opportunities that they face as DERs are further integrated into the grid. The workshops were designed to address the following objectives: (1) develop the enabling attributes of electric cooperative DER business models, (2) explore pathways for generating community benefits from these assets, and (3) identify technical challenges and market risks for DERs in rural electric cooperative service territories. This report outlines key findings and major themes identified by workshop participants that federal agencies, G&Ts, distribution cooperatives, and other entities can consider to advance electric cooperative DER business models.

Portable Soft X-Ray Diagnostics for Transformative Fusion-Energy Concepts (Final Scientific/Technical Report)

A time-gated extreme-ultraviolet spectrometer was fielded on a transformative fusion-energy device, FuZE-Q at Zap Energy, Inc. (ZEI), a sheared-flow-stabilized z-pinch. Plasma emission spectra were collected in the 5–40 nm wavelength (30–250 eV) range. This was the first time a direct-vacuum-coupled, high-voltage, deposition-sensitive diagnostic was fielded on this type of dense-plasma fusion device. To overcome the special challenges of such a coupling, a unique, highly effective implementation was developed, with fast (10-ns risetime) pulsed high-voltage electronics and a multi-stage differential pumping system. This enabled the UNR spectrometer to collect three independently timed spectra per FuZE-Q shot while also protecting sensitive internal components. Analysis of line emission identified oxygen (N-, C-, B-, Be-, Li-, and He-like O), peaking in intensity shortly after maximum current (>500 kA). Spectral databases and collisional-radiative modeling have been used to identify impurities and estimate edge-plasma temperatures.
