A nonlinear optical perspective on the chemistry at liquid/liquid interfaces

In this review, we discuss some of the subtle (and not-so-subtle) rules that govern chemistry and transport at liquid/liquid (L/L) interfaces. An overview of the importance of L/L interfaces is provided with context about why these interfaces are so challenging to study. Emphasis is placed on the use of vibrational sum-frequency generation (SFG), a surface-specific spectroscopy, to probe these interfaces at and away from equilibrium. Highlights from our laboratory’s work probing these interfaces in the context of chemical separations and soft-matter electronics are discussed. In conclusion, revealing the rules that govern self-assembly, chemical recognition, and transport at these dynamic, highly heterogeneous interfaces can allow formulation of avenues to control chemical and physical transformations, impacting a range of basic and applied fields.

Nonlinear simulation of under-resolved flows with shocks

Here, we consider the numerical simulation of advection-dominated flows whose wide range of physical length scales exceed the memory capacity of finite computers. Simulating flows with shocks and turbulence presented challenges for the earliest computers that were quickly overcome by the development of new numerical methodology. Principal among those new ideas were artificial viscosity and finite volume methods, concepts that remain in common use today. We begin by describing the history of those methods, the innovators and their motivations. We then describe the development of finite scale theory, a reformulation of Navier–Stokes theory that exposes the physical principles on which artificial viscosity is based. We discuss the essential properties of the finite scale equations, the observer, unresolved kinetic energy and inviscid energy dissipation. We briefly consider the implementation of the finite scale equations on the computer from the point of view of Gisin’s conjectures about finite information.

Iterative methods in GPU-resident linear solvers for nonlinear constrained optimization

Linear solvers are major computational bottlenecks in a wide range of decision support and optimization computations. The challenges become even more pronounced on heterogeneous hardware, where traditional sparse numerical linear algebra methods are often inefficient. For example, methods for solving ill-conditioned linear systems have relied on conditional branching, which degrades performance on hardware accelerators such as graphical processing units (GPUs). To improve the efficiency of solving ill-conditioned systems, our computational strategy separates computations that are efficient on GPUs from those that need to run on traditional central processing units (CPUs). Our strategy maximizes the reuse of expensive CPU computations. Iterative methods, which thus far have not been broadly used for ill-conditioned linear systems, play an important role in our approach. In particular, we extend ideas from Arioli et al., (2007) to implement iterative refinement using inexact LU factors and flexible generalized minimal residual (FGMRES), with the aim of efficient performance on GPUs. In conclusion, we focus on solutions that are effective within broader application contexts, and discuss how early performance tests could be improved to be more predictive of the performance in a realistic environment.

Stability in integrable nonlocal nonlinear equations

Recently a variety of nonlocal integrable systems has been introduced that besides fields located at particular space-time points simultaneously also contain fields that are located at different, but symmetrically related, points. Here we investigate different types of soliton solutions with regard to their stability against linear perturbations obtained for the nonlocal version of the Hirota/nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the so-called Alice and Bob versions of the Korteweg-de Vries and Bousinesq equations. In this work, we encounter different types of scenarios: Solition solutions that are linearly stable or unstable and also solutions that change their stability properties depending on the parameter regime they are in.
