Measurement of Coherence Length in UndulAtor RAdiation (CLARA): Run 4 Proposal

The goal of the proposed experimental research is to investigate the quantum nature of “a particle in a ring” by studying a single 135-MeV electron, circulating in the IOTA storage ring and interacting with an undulator through single- and multi-photon emissions. The focus of this proposal will be two-photon undulator emissions.

Back-Azimuth Estimation of Air-to-Ground Coupled Infrasound from Transverse Coherence Minimization [Slides]

Infrasonic signals are generated by a variety of natural and anthropogenic sources and can propagate long distances through a windy, layered atmosphere. When these signals impinge on the ground, the resulting deformation can be recorded by buried seismometers, we call this signal a ground coupled airwave (GCA). GCAs are relatively common, and several methods now exist to leverage an infrasound microphone to separate GCAs from pure seismic motion.

Improving qubit coherence time through detailed materials analysis

This study investigates the defects, imperfections, and variations in superconducting Nb thin films deposited on sapphire substrates. Two samples, W114 and W118, were fabricated using DC Magnetron Sputtering and Electron Cyclotron Resonance (ECR), respectively. Each sample was analyzed at five distinct spots to compare elemental homogeneity and thickness variations. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) was employed to examine surface morphology, while Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) provided elemental and chemical state analyses. SEM revealed distinct structures in W114 and a uniform surface in W118. EDS showed higher aluminum and oxygen signals in W118, indicating a thicker film. XPS detected a higher Nb₂O₅ signal in W118, attributed to a thicker oxygen layer. These findings highlight the critical role of precise material characterization in advancing quantum computing technologies.

A Bottom-Up Approach to Rational Design of Crystalline Materials: Investigation of Vibronic Coherences Underlying Exciton Dynamics in Semiconductors

In this project we uncovered structure-function relationships of donor-acceptor co-crystals used to develop next-generation optoelectronic devices. Unraveling the photodynamics of molecular crystalline materials poses many challenges for spectroscopy due to broad, overlapping features representing numerous underlying dynamical processes. This leads researchers to make many assumptions about the dynamics of a system in choosing an appropriate kinetic fitting model. Computationally, electronic structure methods are either prohibitively expensive or underdeveloped for computing the excited state structure of molecular materials, especially states that exhibit charge transfer. Researchers must therefore perform calculations of excited electronic states using truncated models of molecular materials. Here we present a joint experimental-theoretical approach to bridging the gap between the photodynamics of a molecular material and its constituent molecules. We focus our efforts on quantifying the timescales and mechanisms of photoexcitation in donor-acceptor co-crystals and donor-acceptor dimers where the lowest-lying excited state is characterized by charge transfer from the donor to the acceptor. We employ ultrafast UV pump, UV-Vis probe transient absorption spectroscopy to unravel the time-resolved spectroscopic signatures of the photodynamics in both the crystalline material and donor-acceptor dimers in solution. We perform electronic structure and excited state dynamics calculations of the dimers to inform kinetic fitting models and assign the spectral features. The photodynamics of the crystal vs. dimer systems have many similarities, enabling unprecedented insights into the formation and evolution of charge transfer excitons in the crystalline systems.

Performance Year 1 Technical Report - OPEN COG Grid: Extendable Coherent Models-Datasets for Cognitive Power Grids

The OPEN COG Grid project is a collaborative effort between LLNL, NREL, and Texas A&M University (TAMU) to develop synthetic power system datasets that (i) contain all technical information that would be available in a real system, allowing to conduct studies ranging from dynamic simulation to long term planning studies; ii) are accessible to researchers from the broader data sciences community, as oppossed to power system experts only; and (iii) This report summarizes the work conducted during the first 15 months of execution of the project. These activities encompassed: 1. Conduct a survey of existing open data sets and open source power systems simulators, their supported use cases, and accessibility (Chapter 1). 2. Define a new extensible specification for power system data, covering all parameters necessary for most computational use cases (Chapter 2). 3. Collecting real technical system data to complete missing parameters in existing open source datasets (Chapter 3). 4. Develop models that capture the behavior of emergent actors in power grids, neglected by existing datasets; aggregated residential demand response (Chapter 4) and demand response of cryptocurrency miners (Chapter 5). 5. Collect detailed spatial information on distributed energy resources, particular, solar photovoltaic facilities (Chapter 6). The following chapters provide detailed descriptions of these tasks, the assumptions taken, and their findings. In conducting these tasks, the project team produced: two (accepted) conference papers; one journal paper under submission; one draft journal paper pending submission; released one repository with the developed power system data specification, with documentation and examples; and one extended dataset for the Texas power grid under review for release. The team hopes these contributions will enhance access to power system data and remove barriers to the development of new computational techniques for power systems, particularly, those inspired by cognitive sciences.
