Analysis of Defense Waste Processing Facility Sample: Off-Gas Condensate Tank Sample Batch 27862

The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) was requested by Savannah River Remediation (now Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC)), through a Technical Task Request (X-TTR-H-00107), to characterize the “as-received” Off-Gas Condensate Tank (OGCT) Sample identified as sample batch 27862, which was delivered to SRNL Shielded Cells on April 30, 2021. This OGCT report is the third of three sample characterization reports dealing with this Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Recycle Diversion Project. The other two recycling stream characterization reports are the Recycle Collection Tank (RCT) and the Slurry Mix Evaporator Condensate Tank (SMECT) sample report.

Analysis of Defense Waste Processing Facility Sample: Slurry Mix Evaporator Condensate Tank Sample Batch 4638

The Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) was requested by Savannah River Remediation (SRR, now Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC)), through a Technical Task Request, to characterization the “as-received” Slurry Mix Evaporator Condensate Tank (SMECT) sample identified as sample batch 4638, which was delivered to SRNL Shielded Cells on March 19, 2021. The SMECT characterization data will be used as input to the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Recycle Diversion Project. This SMECT report is the second of three sample characterization reports that will be used for this DWPF Project. The other two DWPF characterization reports involve the characterization of the Recycle Collection Tank (RCT) sample and the future Off-Gas Condensate Tank (OGCT) characterization report.

Computational Analysis of Coupled Geoscience Processes in Fractured and Deformable Media

Prediction of flow, transport, and deformation in fractured and porous media is critical to improving our scientific understanding of coupled thermal-hydrological-mechanical processes related to subsurface energy storage and recovery, nonproliferation, and nuclear waste storage. Especially, earth rock response to changes in pressure and stress has remained a critically challenging task. In this work, we advance computational capabilities for coupled processes in fractured and porous media using Sandia Sierra Multiphysics software through verification and validation problems such as poro-elasticity, elasto-plasticity and thermo-poroelasticity. We apply Sierra software for geologic carbon storage, fluid injection/extraction, and enhanced geothermal systems. We also significantly improve machine learning approaches through latent space and self-supervised learning. Additionally, we develop new experimental technique for evaluating dynamics of compacted soils at an intermediate scale. Overall, this project will enable us to systematically measure and control the earth system response to changes in stress and pressure due to subsurface energy activities.

Analysis of Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF) Condensate Samples and Evaluation of the Glycolate Destruction Process during Nitric-Glycolic flowsheet Transition

Glycolate concentrations were measured by the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) in Slurry Mix Evaporator Condensate Tank (SMECT) and Recycle Collection Tank (RCT) samples retrieved after implementation of the Nitric-Glycolic Acid flowsheet at the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). No glycolate has been detected in any sample using Ion Chromatography (IC) with a detection limit of 8 mg/L, and no glycolate has been detected using either IC or Proton Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy ( 1 HNMR) after a permanganate strike was performed in the RCT.

Sequential decision analysis for nonstationary stochastic processes

A formulation of the problem of making decisions concerning the state of nonstationary stochastic processes is given. An optimal decision rule, for the case in which the stochastic process is independent of the decisions made, is derived. It is shown that this rule is a generalization of the Bayesian likelihood ratio test; and an analog to Wald's sequential likelihood ratio test is given, in which the optimal thresholds may vary with time.

Space processing float zone thermal analysis

Thermal analysis (BETA) computer program adaptations were prepared to analyze phase change histories in crystal specimens. The first program (BETA-CYL) treats right circular cylinder configurations and the second, more general, program (BETA-BOR) treats a generalized body-of-revolution configuration. A series of computer runs were made for silicon material to determine boundary conditions which produce flat solidification interfaces while, at the same time, minimizing peak temperatures in the molten zone. Flat solidification interfaces are a goal believed by some investigators to be required to produce high quality semiconductor materials. The thermal effects of convection in a molten zone were examined and found to be negligible in comparison to the conduction heat transfer of the melt.

Analysis and Evaluation of Processes and Equipment in Tasks 2 and 4 of the Low-cost Solar Array Project

The significant economic data for the current production multiblade wafering and inner diameter slicing processes were tabulated and compared to data on the experimental and projected multiblade slurry, STC ID diamond coated blade, multiwire slurry and crystal systems fixed abrasive multiwire slicing methods. Cost calculations were performed for current production processes and for 1982 and 1986 projected wafering techniques.

Silicon Solar Cell Process Development, Fabrication and Analysis

The standard solar cells (2x2 cm) from the cast silicon (HEM) showed a maximum AMO efficiency of 10.1%. Cells from the low resistivity material (0.5 ohm-cm) showed lower performance than those of the high resistivity cast silicon (3 ohm-cm), an average efficiency 9.5% versus 7.6%. Maximum AMO efficiency of the standard solar cells from the EFG (RH) ribbons was about 7.5%. The solar cells from the controlled SiC, using the displaced die, showed more consistent and better performance than those of the uncontrolled SiC ribbons, an average efficiency of 6.6% versus 5.4%. The average AMO efficiency of the standard SOC solar cells were about 6%. These were large area solar cells (an average area of 15 sq cm). A maximum efficiency of 7.3% was obtained. The SOC solar cells showed both leakage and series resistance problems, leading to an average curve fill factor of about 60%.

Silicon solar cell process development, fabrication and analysis

The fabrication of solar cells from several unconventional silicon materials is described, and cell performance measured and analyzed. Unconventional materials evaluated are edge defined film fed grown (EFG), heat exchanger method (HEM), dendritic web grown, and continuous CZ silicons. Resistivity, current voltage, and spectral sensitivity of the cells were measured. Current voltage was measured under AM0 and AM1 conditions. Maximum conversion efficiencies of cells fabricated from these and other unconventional silicons were compared and test results analyzed. The HEM and continuous CZ silicon were found to be superior to silicon materials considered previously.
