An unprecedented quinoid–donor–acceptor strategy to boost the carrier mobilities of semiconducting polymers for organic field-effect transistors

Quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers hold great application potential in organic field-effect transistors (OFETs). However, the development of high mobility quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers still lags behind the more popular donor–acceptor (D–A) conjugated polymers, mainly owing to the lack of a rational design strategy and efficient building block. Herein, a novel quinoid–donor–acceptor (Q–D–A) strategy is demonstrated to modulate the energy-level and boost the charge carrier transport mobility of conjugated polymers as opposed to the D–A system. On the basis of this strategy, a quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymer, namely PAQM-BT, is designed and synthesized. With the combined use of quinoid, donor and acceptor units in the backbone, the resulting Q–D–A polymer PAQM-BT displays the narrowest bandgap with the deepest-lying lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy level, highest backbone coplanarity, enhanced thin-film crystallinity and smallest effective hole mass ($m^*_h$) in comparison with the corresponding D–A polymer PT3B1 and quinoid–donor (Q–D) polymer PAQM-3T. Benefitting from the more effective intra- and inter-chain charge transport, as corroborated by experiment and theoretical calculations, OFET devices based on PAQM-BT exhibit a highly boosted hole mobility of up to 5.10 cm 2 V -1 s -1 , which is one and four orders of magnitude higher than that of PAQM-3T and PT3B1, respectively, and is among the highest for quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers. Finally, the potent Q–D–A strategy not only allows the energy level to be modulated but also leads to effective charge carrier transport, opening up possibilities to the development of high mobility quinoidal–aromatic conjugated polymers based on a variety of quinoids, donors, and acceptors.

Orientational Ordering within Semiconducting Polymer Fibrils

Abstract Due to a general paucity of suitable characterization methods, the internal orientational ordering of polymer fibrils has rarely been measured despite its importance particularly for semi‐conducting polymers. An emerging tool with sensitivity to bond orientation is polarized resonant soft X‐ray scattering (P‐RSoXS). Here, P‐RSoXS reveals the molecular arrangement within fibrils (if type I or type II fibrils), the extent of orientation in the fibril crystal, and an explicit crystal‐amorphous interphase. Neat films as well as binary blends with a fullerene derivative are characterized for three different polymers, that are prototypical materials widely used in organic electronics applications. Anisotropic P‐RSoXS patterns reveal two different fibril types. Analysis of the q ‐dependence of the anisotropy from simulated and experimental scattering patterns reveal that neat polymer fibrillar systems likely comprise more than two phases, with the third phase in addition to crystal and amorphous likely being an interphase with distinct density and orientation. Intriguingly, the fibril type correlates to the H‐ or J‐aggregation signature in ultraviolet‐visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy, revealing insight into the fibril formation. Together, the results will open the door to develop more sophisticated structure‐function relationships between chemical design, fibril type, formation pathways and kinetics, interfacial ordering, and eventually device functions.

Combination of Counterion Size and Doping Concentration Determines the Electronic and Thermoelectric Properties of Semiconducting Polymers

In both chemical and electrochemical doping of organic semiconductors (OSCs), a counterion, either from the electrolyte or ionized dopant, balances the charge introduced to the OSC. Despite the large influence of this counterion on OSC optical and electronic response, there remains substantial debate on how a fundamental parameter, ion size, impacts these properties. Here, this work resolves much of this debate by accounting for two doping regimes. In the low-doping regime, the Coulomb binding energies between charge carriers on the OSC and the counterions are significant, and larger counterions lead to decreased Coulomb interactions, more delocalized charge carriers, and higher electrical conductivities. In the high-doping regime, the Coulomb binding energies become negligible due to the increased dielectric constant of the films and a smoothing of the energy landscape; thereby, the electrical conductivities depend primarily on the extent of morphological disorder in the OSC. Moreover, in regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene), rr-P3HT, smaller counterions lead to greater bipolaron concentrations in the low-doping regime due to the increased Coulomb interactions. Emphasizing the impact of the counterion size, it is shown that larger counterions can lead to increased thermoelectric power factors for rr-P3HT.

Synthesis and structural characterization of the new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 . Rare example of small gap semiconducting behavior with negative thermopower within the range 300 K-700 K

The new Zintl phases Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 have been synthesized using Pb flux, which allowed for the growth of 4-5 mm large crystals. The structures were determined utilizing single-crystal X-ray diffraction methods. Both compounds crystalize in the monoclinic crystal system (space group C2/m (No. 12)) and their structures are closely related. The structure of Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 can be seen as being comprised of divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP 4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 4 ] 6- layers. Within the layers, homoatomic P–P bonds are present, which if cleaved, leave two infinite [CdP 3 ] 7- chains running along the crystallographic b-axis. The other structure, that of Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , can be rationalized as also having divalent Ba atoms and conjoined CdP4 tetrahedra in the form of [Cd 2 P 3 ] 6- layers. These layers, again, can be visualized as chains that run down the crystallographic b-axis, which are further connected by P-P dimers. Electronic band structure calculations show that each structure has an optimal number of valence electrons, and therefore conform to the Zintl-Klemm concept. Accordingly, the two compounds can be considered small band gap semiconductors, with band gaps of ca. 0.1 eV and 0.6 eV for Ba3Cd2P4 and Ba 2 Cd 2 P 3 , respectively. Electrical resistivity measurements show that Ba3Cd2P4 displays a large resistivity value at room temperature and an experimental band gap of ca. 0.05 eV, which fits reasonably well with the theoretical predictions. Thermopower measurements show that throughout the temperature range 300 K-700 K, Ba 3 Cd 2 P 4 displays a negative Seebeck coefficient. Here, the extremum value of -84 μV is reached at 630 K, suggestive of an n-type semiconductor, a rarity among Zintl phases.

Role of Complexation Strength on the Photophysical and Transport Properties of Semiconducting Charged Polymer Complexes

The high polymer fraction in complexes of conjugated and insulating polyelectrolytes offers unique opportunities for the fabrication of conductive thick films and bulk structures. The electrostatic interactions in these systems further provide a handle for controlling their structure and properties. The impact of charge-mediated complexation strength on the photophysical and electronic transport properties in blends of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with oppositely charged polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) was examined. Complexes were formed with varying frequency of charged repeat units, from 50 to 100%, on an anionic polythiophene-based CPE and a complimentary cationic PIL. In highly charged complexes, the intimate mixing between the CPE and the PIL reduced the structural disorder along the CPE backbone, enhancing its intrachain conjugation and interchain stacking. In weakly charged complexes (<90%), these chain planarization effects were absent and microphase separation occurred. At all charge fractions examined, the electrical conductivity of an acid-doped complex was higher than that of the unblended constituent CPE. Further, the highest electrical conductivity, near 1 S cm –1 , was found for a charge fraction of 100%. These results demonstrate the potential for designing effective polymeric conductors using electrostatic complexation.

Multifunctional Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe): Polar Semiconducting Antiferromagnets with Nonlinear Optical Properties

In this work, Cu 2 TSiS 4 (T = Mn and Fe) polycrystalline and single-crystal materials were prepared with high-temperature solid-state and chemical vapor transport methods, respectively. The polar crystal structure (space group Pmn2 1 ) consists of chains of corner-sharing and distorted CuS 4 , Mn/FeS 4 , and SiS 4 tetrahedra, which is confirmed by Rietveld refinement using neutron powder diffraction data, X-ray single-crystal refinement, electron diffraction, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and second harmonic generation (SHG) techniques. Magnetic measurements indicate that both compounds order antiferromagnetically at 8 and 14 K, respectively, which is supported by the temperature-dependent (100–2 K) neutron powder diffraction data. Additional magnetic reflections observed at 2 K can be modeled by magnetic propagation vectors k = (1/2,0,1/2) and k = (1/2,1/2,1/2) for Cu 2 MnSiS 4 and Cu 2 FeSiS 4 , respectively. The refined antiferromagnetic structure reveals that the Mn/Fe spins are canted away from the ac plane by about 14°, with the total magnetic moments of Mn and Fe being 4.1(1) and 2.9(1) μ B , respectively. Both compounds exhibit an SHG response with relatively modest second-order nonlinear susceptibilities. Density functional theory calculations are used to describe the electronic band structures.

Metal Sulfide Ion Exchangers: High Acid Stability of Na 2 x Mg 2 y – x Sn 4– y S 8 (NMS) and Topotactic Conversion to 2D Solid Acids with Semiconducting Character

Metal sulfide ion exchange materials (MSIEs) are of interest for nuclear waste remediation applications. Here, we report the high stability of two structurally related metal sulfide ion exchange materials, Na 2x Mg 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 (Mg-NMS) and Na 2 SnS 3 (Na-NMS), in strongly acid media, in addition to the preparation of Na 2x Ni 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 (Ni-NMS). Their formation progress during synthesis is studied with in-situ methods, with the target phases appearing in <15 min, reaction completion in <12 h, and high yields (75–80%). Upon contact with nitric or hydrochloric acid, these materials topotactically exchange Na + for H + , proceeding in a stepwise protonation pathway for Na 5.33 Sn 2.67 S 8 . Na-NMS is stable in 2 M HNO 3 and Mg-NMS is stable in 4 M HNO 3 for up to 4 h, while both NMS materials are stable in 6 M HCl for up to 4 days. However, the treatment of Mg-NMS and Na-NMS with 2–6 M H 2 SO 4 reveals a much slower protonation process since after 4 h of contact both NMS and HMS are present in the solution. The resultant protonated materials, H 2x Mg 2y–x Sn 4–y S 8 and H 4x [(H y Na y–1 ) 1.33x Sn 4––1.33x ]S 8 , are themselves solid acids and readily react with and intercalate a variety of organic amines, where the band gap of the resultant adduct is influenced by amine choice and can be tuned within the range of 1.88(5)–2.27(5) eV. The work function energy values for all materials were extracted from photoemission yield spectroscopy in air (PYSA) measurements and range from 5.47 (2) to 5.76 (2) eV, and the relative band alignments of the materials are discussed. DFT calculations suggest that the electronic structure of Na 2 MgSn 3 S 8 and H 2 MgSn 3 S 8 makes them indirect gap semiconductors with multi-valley band edges, with carriers confined to the [MgSn 3 S 8 ] 2– layers. Light electron effective masses indicate high electron mobilities.

Synthesis of Layered Gold Tellurides AuSbTe and Au 2 Te 3 and Their Semiconducting and Metallic Behavior

Previous studies on natural samples of pampaloite (AuSbTe) revealed the crystal structure of a potentially cleavable and/or exfoliable material, while studies on natural and synthetic montbrayite (Sb-containing Au 2 Te 3 ) claimed various chemical compositions for this low-symmetry compound. Few investigations of synthetic samples have been reported for both materials, leaving much of their chemical, thermal, and electronic characteristics unknown. Here, in this study, we investigate the stability, electronic properties, and synthesis of the gold antimony tellurides AuSbTe and Au 1.9 Sb 0.46 Te 2.64 (montbrayite). Differential thermal analysis and in situ powder X-ray diffraction revealed that AuSbTe is incongruently melting, while Au 1.9 Sb 0.46 Te 2.64 is congruently melting. Calculations of the band structures and four-point resistivity measurements showed that AuSbTe is a semiconductor and Au 1.9 Sb 0.46 Te 2.64 a metal. Various synthesis attempts confirmed the limited stable chemical composition of Au 1.9 Sb 0.46 Te 2.64 , identified successful methods to synthesize both compounds, and highlighted the challenges associated with single-crystal synthesis of AuSbTe.

BaCu 4/3 Si 2/3 P 2 and BaCu 2–( x + y ) Zn x Si y P 2 : Expanding the Semiconducting Landscape in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -Type Family

ThCr 2 Si 2 -type layered materials are a large family of compounds with applications ranging from thermoelectricity to magnetism, with the vast majority of the members exhibiting metallic behavior. Here, in this study, we synthesized a new group of materials with Cu-Si and Cu-Zn-Si square nets with the general formula BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 and BaCu 2–(x+y) Zn x Si y P 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.9; 0.3 ≤ y ≤ 0.7). Several synthesized compounds are charge-balanced semiconductors, which are rare in the ThCr 2 Si 2 family. All the reported compounds crystallize in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type tetragonal I4/mmm space group, with Cu/Zn/Si jointly occupying the same 4d crystallographic site. In the Zn-free composition, BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 , Ba, and P each occupy a single crystallographic site. The introduction of Zn results in the expansion of the unit cell and splitting the Ba atomic sites along the [001] direction. Such structural displacement of the Ba atoms was confirmed by the heat capacity measurements. Band structure and density-of-states calculations on ordered hypothetical structural models reveal either a small bandgap (∼0.2 eV) or semimetallic band structures. The compounds reported here exhibit high Seebeck coefficients and ultralow thermal conductivity, making them promising candidates for the development of thermoelectric materials.
