BaCu 4/3 Si 2/3 P 2 and BaCu 2–( x + y ) Zn x Si y P 2 : Expanding the Semiconducting Landscape in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -Type Family

Abstract

ThCr 2 Si 2 -type layered materials are a large family of compounds with applications ranging from thermoelectricity to magnetism, with the vast majority of the members exhibiting metallic behavior. Here, in this study, we synthesized a new group of materials with Cu-Si and Cu-Zn-Si square nets with the general formula BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 and BaCu 2–(x+y) Zn x Si y P 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.9; 0.3 ≤ y ≤ 0.7). Several synthesized compounds are charge-balanced semiconductors, which are rare in the ThCr 2 Si 2 family. All the reported compounds crystallize in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type tetragonal I4/mmm space group, with Cu/Zn/Si jointly occupying the same 4d crystallographic site. In the Zn-free composition, BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 , Ba, and P each occupy a single crystallographic site. The introduction of Zn results in the expansion of the unit cell and splitting the Ba atomic sites along the [001] direction. Such structural displacement of the Ba atoms was confirmed by the heat capacity measurements. Band structure and density-of-states calculations on ordered hypothetical structural models reveal either a small bandgap (∼0.2 eV) or semimetallic band structures. The compounds reported here exhibit high Seebeck coefficients and ultralow thermal conductivity, making them promising candidates for the development of thermoelectric materials.

Molecular Diradical Spin Qubits in a Crystalline Host as a Platform for Quantum Sensing

Doping a luminescent tris(2,4,6-trichlorophenyl)methyl diradical m (TTM) 2 into a host crystal of its diamagnetic precursor m (HTTM) 2 creates a molecular color center with enhanced optical-spin interface properties important for quantum sensing. Optical polarization of the |T 0 ⟩ sublevel of the diradical triplet ground state is achieved by spin-selective intersystem crossing from the |T + ⟩ and |T – ⟩ sublevels of the triplet excited state at ambient and cryogenic temperatures. Coherent spin control of m (TTM) 2 doped into m (HTTM) 2 using pulsed optically detected magnetic resonance (ODMR) spectroscopy results in a 10-fold improvement in ODMR contrast over that observed for randomly oriented m (TTM)2 using continuous-wave ODMR. The diradical doped crystal powders achieve spin coherence times of 2.8, 3.4, and 7.4 μs at 294, 85, and 5 K, respectively. The diradical photoluminescence is sensitive to weak applied magnetic fields independent of temperature, excitation wavelength, and dopant concentration, providing a promising pathway toward robust quantum sensing of anisotropic magnetic fields under ambient conditions.

Structural Phase Transitions in the van der Waals Ferromagnets Fe x Pd y Te 2

Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnets are attracting significant attention, both as platforms for studying fundamental magnetic interactions and for the exciting possibility of utilizing them as building blocks in devices and heterostructures, which may lead to new physical phenomena and functionalities. Here, we provide a detailed study of the crystal structure and physical properties of the recently discovered vdW ferromagnet FePd 2 Te 2 . We find this compound has a relatively wide width of formation, and grow single crystals with compositions Fe x Pd y Te 2 where x ranges from 0.9 to 1.1 and y from 1.8 to 2.5, respectively. Temperature-dependent X-ray diffraction and transport measurements reveal that a first-order structural transition occurs in the range of T = 360–420 K, where the critical temperature, modulation wave vector, and corresponding room-temperature crystal structures all depend on chemical composition. Above the transition, the compounds with Pd fraction y > 2 adopt a disordered derivative of the tetragonal FeTe structure, with the Fe layer showing mixed Fe/Pd occupancy and the extra Pd atoms partially occupying interstitial sites. Below 370 K, the structure is incommensurately modulated, likely associated with the complex ordering of Pd/Fe atoms in the metal layers or the interstitial Pd in the vdW gaps. For y < 2, the composition Fe 1.1 Pd 1.8 Te 2 has monoclinic symmetry at room temperature that is consistent with the reported structure of FePd 2 Te 2 . This phase undergoes a structural transition at 420 K for which the high temperature structure is yet to be determined; however, based on the similarities with the y > 2 compounds, we speculate that its T > 420 K structure is also tetragonal. Importantly, the high temperature, symmetry-breaking structural transition observed here provides a likely explanation for the origin of the structural domains previously observed in FePd 2 Te 2 . All compounds investigated in the Fe x Pd y Te 2 series show metallic behavior, with magnetic characterization indicating that they are easy-plane, hard, ferromagnets with T C spanning 98–180 K. Both the critical temperature for the structural transition and the Curie temperature are moderately suppressed with increasing Pd fraction y and corresponding decreasing Fe fraction x, indicating that synthetic control over x and y paves way for the further exploration of these compounds.

Cs X Si 15 P 21 ( X = Sn or Pb): Polar Noncentrosymmetric Si–P Frameworks Stabilized by Covalent X –P Bonding

Metal silicon phosphides composed of earth-abundant Si and P tend to exhibit semiconducting properties and adopt diverse crystal structures with relatively small additions of structure-directing elements. The potential of silicon phosphide materials in nonlinear optical applications has been hindered by the inability to systematically produce noncentrosymmetric structures with such a flexible framework. Here, in this work, two isostructural compounds with a novel noncentrosymmetric structure were made possible by the inclusion of elements with stereochemically active lone pairs (Sn 2+ and Pb 2+ ). The structures were determined through single-crystal and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction. Analysis of chemical bonding in real space through the electron localization function revealed stereochemically active Pb 2+ and Sn 2+ species in a trigonal pyramidal coordination with {Pb/Sn}–P bonds. Such covalent bonding between Pb and P is quite uncommon in extended solids and has been reported in a few rare instances. Band structure calculations and linear optical measurements confirm the semiconducting nature of Cs X Si 15 P 21 ( X = Sn or Pb). The synthesis was optimized to yield high-purity polycrystalline samples. The nonlinear optical properties show promising second-harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients from the Kurtz–Perry method. First-principles calculations of the nonlinear optical properties support the experimentally determined SHG values and provide moderate values of birefringence, suggesting Cs X Si 15 P 21 could be phase-matchable and practical nonlinear optical materials in the mid-IR region.
