Nuclear cold QCD: Review and future strategy

This review examines data from hadron-nucleus collisions, primarily focusing on hard processes like Drell-Yan, heavy flavor, and quarkonium production. It highlights observed modifications of particle yields as functions of momentum and rapidity, aiming to clarify the underlying QCD effects on cold nuclear matter. It outlines strategies for future experiments, including the Electron-Ion Collider, to distinguish between these effects. Key questions address the universality of suppression mechanisms and the role of nonperturbative physics, providing a road map for upcoming measurements of hadrons on nuclei.

Measurements of ϒ states production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV with STAR: Cross sections, ratios, and multiplicity dependence

We report measurements of ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆), ϒ⁡(2⁢𝑆) and ϒ⁡(3⁢𝑆) production in 𝑝 + 𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ =500 GeV by the STAR experiment in year 2011, corresponding to an integrated luminosity ℒ int = 13 pb −1 . The results provide precise cross sections, transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) spectra, as well as cross section ratios for 𝑝 T < 10 GeV/c and |𝑦| < 1. The dependence of the ϒ yield on charged particle multiplicity has also been measured, offering new insights into the mechanisms of quarkonium production. The data are compared to various theoretical models: the color evaporation model (CEM) accurately describes the ϒ⁡(1⁢𝑆) production, while the color glass condensate+nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (CGC+NRQCD) model overestimates the data, particularly at low 𝑝 T . Conversely, the color singlet model (CSM) underestimates the rapidity dependence. These discrepancies highlight the need for further development in understanding the production dynamics of heavy quarkonia in high-energy hadronic collisions. The trend in the multiplicity dependence is consistent with CGC/saturation and string percolation models or ϒ production happening in multiple parton interactions modeled by PYTHIA 8.

Particle production by 𝛾−𝛾 interactions in future electron-ion colliders

The particle production in photon-photon (𝛾⁢𝛾) interactions present in electron-ion collisions is investigated. We present calculations for the total cross sections and event rates related to the production of light mesons [𝜂,𝜂′,𝑓 0 and 𝑓 2 ], charmonium [𝜂 𝑐 and 𝜒 𝑐 ], and charmoniumlike [𝑋⁡(3915), 𝑋⁡(3940), 𝑋⁡(4140), and 𝑋⁡(6900)] states, considering the Electron - Ion Collider, Electron - ion collider in China, Large Hadron electron Collider, and Future Circular Collider - electron hadron energies. Our predictions demonstrate that experimental studies of these processes are feasible and useful to constrain the properties of light mesons and quarkonium states and shed some light on the configuration of the considered charmoniumlike states.

Covariant calculation of a two-loop test of nonrelativistic QCD factorization

In this work we test the nonrelativistic QCD factorization conjecture for inclusive quarkonium production at two loops by carrying out a covariant calculation of the nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics (NRQCD) long-distance matrix element (LDME) for a heavy-quark pair in an S-wave, color-octet state to fragment into a heavy-quark pair in a color-singlet state of arbitrary orbital angular momentum. The NRQCD factorization conjecture for the universality of the LDME requires that infrared divergences that it contains be independent of the direction of the Wilson line that appears in its definition. We find this to be the case in our calculation. The results of our calculation differ in some respects from those of a previous calculation that was carried out by Nayak, Qiu, and Sterman using light-cone methods. We have identified the sources of some of these differences. The results of both calculations are consistent with the NRQCD factorization conjecture. However, the general principle that underlies this confirmation of NRQCD factorization at two-loop order has yet to be revealed.

Dijet and electroweak limits on a Z ′ boson coupled to quarks

An insightful way of presenting the LHC limits on dijet resonances is the coupling-mass plot for a Z ′ boson that has flavor-independent quark interactions. This also illustrates the comparison of low-mass LHC sensitivity with constraints on the flavor-independent Z ′ boson from electroweak and quarkonium measurements. To derive these constraints, we compute the Z ′ mixing with the Z , the photon, and the ϒ meson, emphasizing the logarithmic dependence on the masses of the new electroweak-charged fermions (“anomalons”) required to cancel the gauge anomalies. We update the coupling-mass plot, extending it for Z ′ masses from 5 GeV to 5 TeV. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Unscreened forces in the quark-gluon plasma?

We study the correlator of temporal Wilson lines at nonzero temperature in 2+1 flavor lattice QCD with the aim to define the heavy quark-antiquark potential at nonzero temperature. For temperatures 153 MeV ≤ 𝑇 ≤ 352 MeV the spectral representation of this correlator is consistent with a broadened peak in the spectral function, position, or width of which then defines the real or imaginary parts of the heavy quark-antiquark potential at nonzero temperature, respectively. We find that the potential’s real part is not screened contrary to the widely held expectations. We comment on how this fact may modify the picture of quarkonium melting in the quark-gluon plasma.

Born-Oppenheimer potentials for $SU$(3) gauge theory

We develop parametrizations of eight of the lowest Born-Oppenheimer potentials for quarkonium hybrid mesons as functions of the separation r of the static quark and antiquark sources. The parameters are determined by fitting results calculated using pure SU⁡(3) lattice gauge theory. The parametrizations have the correct limiting behavior at small r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with gluelumps. They have the correct limiting behavior at large r, where the potentials form multiplets associated with excitations of a relativistic string. There is a narrow avoided crossing in the small-r region between two potentials with the same Born-Oppenheimer quantum numbers.

Hard-scattering approach to strongly hindered electric dipole transitions between heavy quarkonia

The conventional wisdom in dealing with electromagnetic transition between heavy quarkonia is the multipole expansion, when the emitted photon has a typical energy of order quarkonium binding energy. Nevertheless, in the case when the energy carried by the photon is of order typical heavy quark momentum, the multipole expansion doctrine is expected to break down. In this work, we apply the “hard-scattering” approach originally developed to tackle the strongly hindered magnetic dipole ( M 1 ) transition [Y. Jia , ] to the strongly hindered electric dipole ( E 1 ) transition between heavy quarkonia. We derive the factorization formula for the strongly hindered E 1 transition rates at the lowest order in velocity and α s in the context of the nonrelativistic QCD, and conduct a detailed numerical comparison with the standard predictions for various bottomonia and charmonia E 1 transition processes. Azimuthal angular correlation of J/ψ plus jet production at the electron-ion collider

By investigating the soft gluon radiation in the J/ψ plus jet photoproduction at the electron-ion collider (EIC), we demonstrate that the azimuthal angular correlations between the leading jet and heavy quarkonium provide a unique probe to the production mechanism of the latter. In particular, a significant cos⁡(φ) asymmetry is found for the color-singlet channel, whereas it vanishes or has an opposite sign for color-octet production, depending on the jet transverse momentum. Numerical results of cos⁡(φ) and cos⁡(2⁢φ) asymmetries employing both the color-singlet model and the nonrelativistic QCD approach are presented for typical kinematics at the future EIC.

3 𝑃 0 model revisited

We revisit the phenomenological 3 𝑃 0 model for the decay of quarkonium ($Q\bar{Q}$) into two open flavor mesons ($\bar{𝔐}⁢𝔐$). We take the heavy-quark limit and derive a transition rate between $Q\bar{Q}$ and $\bar{𝔐}⁢𝔐$ to be compared with the one calculated in studies of string breaking using lattice QCD. This comparison allows us to fit the creation amplitude of a light quark-antiquark pair in the 3 𝑃 0 model to the string-breaking transition rate in QCD.

Observation of the ϒ ( 3 S ) Meson and Suppression of ϒ States in Pb-Pb Collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV

The production of ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton ( p p ) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ ( 3 S ) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and p p collisions are reported for both the ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality. These ratios, when appropriately scaled, are significantly less than unity, indicating a suppression of ϒ yields in Pb-Pb collisions. This suppression increases from peripheral to central Pb-Pb collisions. Furthermore, the suppression is stronger for ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons compared to ϒ ( 2 S ) mesons, extending the pattern of sequential suppression of quarkonium states in nuclear collisions previously seen for the J / ψ , ψ ( 2 S ) , ϒ ( 1 S ) , and ϒ ( 2 S ) mesons. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Double DVCS Measurement with the CLAS12 High-Luminosity Upgrade [Slides]

CLAS12 has a diverse physics program, with its detector commissioned in 2018 and since then acquiring physics data. The detector performance is close to design after improvements from AI-assisted tracking, but luminosity upgrades will greatly help efficiently execute the existing physics program and facilitate new physics opportunities. Two phases of luminosity increases are planned. The first, a doubling to 2x10 35 cm -2 s -1 , is in progress with an additional, fast tracking layer and en route in the next 3 years. The second, larger, phase, to 10 37 cm -2 s -1 , converts CLAS12’s forward acceptance region into a muon detector. μCLAS12 in the 2 nd phase is one of only two facilities in the world that can measure DDVCS, extending access to GPDs into new kinematic space. It also can provide, for example, access to heavy quarkonium.

Multiplicity dependence of $D$ and $J/\psi$ production in small collision systems

We discuss open heavy flavor (D-meson) and quarkonium (J/ψ) production in high multiplicity proton-proton (p+p) and proton-nucleus (p+A) collisions at the LHC in the impact parameter dependent saturation model. A key ingredient in our calculations is the fluctuations of the gluon saturation scale at large-x at each impact parameter, reflecting rare parton configurations inside the projectile and target. Such initial state fluctuations have been used to describe the multiplicity distribution of D-meson and J/ψ production yield at mid rapidity in small collision systems at the LHC. In these proceedings, we examine the rapidity dependence of J/ψ production and emphasize its importance in constraining initial state models of high multiplicity events in small systems.

Charmonium Transport in Heavy-Ion Collisions at the LHC

We provide an update on our semi-classical transport approach for quarkonium production in high-energy heavy-ion collisions, focusing on 𝐽/𝜓 and 𝜓(2𝑆) mesons in 5.02 TeV Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at both forward and mid-rapidity. In particular, we employ the most recent charm-production cross sections reported in pp collisions, which are pivotal for the magnitude of the regeneration contribution, and their modifications due to cold-nuclear-matter (CNM) effects. Multi-differential observables are calculated in terms of nuclear modification factors as a function of centrality, transverse momentum, and rapidity, including the contributions from feeddown from bottom hadron decays. For our predictions for 𝜓(2𝑆) production, the mechanism of sequential regeneration relative to the more strongly bound 𝐽/𝜓 meson plays an important role in interpreting recent ALICE data.

2025 EIC-France Workshop: Physics Highlights and Perspectives

This document presents a synthesis of the theory contributions and discussions from the 2nd EIC-France Workshop, held at IJCLab (Orsay) on 1-3 December 2025. The workshop brought together members of the French hadron-physics community to review recent theoretical developments relevant to the future Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) and to coordinate national efforts in preparation for its early physics program. The report first summarizes the collider's initial running conditions and luminosity performance, as outlined in the EIC Early Science Matrix. It then provides concise overviews of the theoretical presentations on inclusive, semi-inclusive, exclusive, heavy-flavor, and small-x physics. Based on these discussions, two measurements emerged as especially well suited for early EIC operation and strongly aligned with areas of established French expertise: inclusive diffraction and inclusive quarkonium production. These channels offer clean signatures, robust theoretical interpretability, and direct sensitivity to fundamental QCD phenomena such as gluon saturation, heavy-quark dynamics, and the small-x structure of hadrons and nuclei. In addition, the workshop identified longer-term physics opportunities that will benefit from the full capabilities of the EIC after its ramp-up phase. These include accessing the three-dimensional structure of the pion through the Sullivan process and a broader program of exclusive three-body final states, both of which represent high-impact avenues for exploring hadronic structure and non-perturbative QCD. Together, the elements summarized in this report provide a coherent overview of the strategic priorities and scientific ambitions shaping the French community's contribution to the EIC physics program.

Towards 2+1 Flavor Lattice QCD Results for the Heavy Quark Diffusion Coefficient

We apply and extend a novel approach to non-perturbatively estimate the heavy-quark momentum diffusion coefficient κ, which is a key input for the theoretical description of heavy quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions, and is important for the understanding of the elliptic flow and nuclear suppression factor of heavy flavor hadrons. In the heavy-quark limit, this coefficient is encoded in the spectral functions of color-electric and color-magnetic correlators that we calculate on the lattice to high pre cision by applying gradient flow. In a recent study we have considered quenched QCD at 1.5 T c , where we performed a detailed study of the lat tice spacing and flow time dependence of the color-electric correlator, and, using theoretically well-established model fits for the spectral reconstruc tion, we estimated the heavy-quark diffusion coefficient. Equipped with the experience obtained in quenched QCD, we estimate $κ$ from 2+1 flavor QCD ensembles at small but finite lattice spacing and flow time without increasing systematic errors significantly.

Accuracy of analytic energy level formulas applied to hadronic spectroscopy of heavy mesons

Linear and harmonic potential models are used in the nonrelativistic Schroedinger equation to obtain article mass spectra for mesons as bound states of quarks. The main emphasis is on the linear potential where exact solutions of the S-state eigenvalues and eigenfunctions and the asymptotic solution for the higher order partial wave are obtained. A study of the accuracy of two analytical energy level formulas as applied to heavy mesons is also included. Cornwall's formula is found to be particularly accurate and useful as a predictor of heavy quarkonium states. Exact solution for all partial waves of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a harmonic potential is also obtained and compared with the calculated discrete spectra of the linear potential. Detailed derivations of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the linear and harmonic potentials are presented in appendixes.

Measurement of J/psi Production near Threshold in J/psi -> µ+µ-

This dissertation presents a detailed analysis of J/psi photoproduction near the kinematic threshold in the J/psi -> µ+µ- decay channel, based on data collected by the GlueX experiment at Jefferson Lab. The study aims to probe the structure of the proton and the underlying mechanisms of heavy vector quarkonium photoproduction, contributing to a deeper understanding of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) in the non-perturbative regime. The measurement focuses on the total and differential cross-sections of J/psi photoproduction and explores various theoretical models, including two-gluon and three-gluon exchange, open-charm contributions, and potential exotic states like pentaquarks. The experimental setup, featuring a high-precision tagged photon beam and advanced particle identification techniques, allowed for the separation of J/psi events from background processes. The analysis of the J/psi -> µ+µ- channel yields cross-sections that complement previous measurements in the J/psi -> e+e- decay mode, providing new insights into gluon dynamics at low momentum transfer. This work also examines the systematic uncertainties and provides a comprehensive comparison of results with theoretical predictions, highlighting the role of gluon exchange mechanisms in the photoproduction process. The results presented in this dissertation help refine our understanding of proton structure and QCD dynamics, offering a robust dataset for future theoretical and experimental studies in hadronic physics.
