Systems and methods for micromechanical displacement-based logic circuits

The present disclosure relates to a micromechanical displacement logic, signal propagation system that makes use of first and second bistable elements, and first and second mounting structures arranged adjacent opposing surfaces of the first bistable element. A plurality of pivotal lever arms are used to support the first bistable element in either one of two positions of equilibrium. A support structure and a compressible flexure element disposed between the support structure and the first mounting structure apply a preload force to the first mounting structure, which imparts the preload force to the first bistable element. The first bistable element is moveable from one of the two stable equilibrium positions to the other in response to an initial signal applied thereto. The preload force, at least one stiffness characteristic of the lever arms, and a compressibility of a compressible coupling element which links the second bistable element to the first, are all selected to tune signal propagation from the first bistable element to the second bistable element.

Magnetoelectric XNOR logic gate device

A magneto-electric (ME) XNOR logic gate device includes a conducting device; and a ME-FET coupled to the conducting device. The ME-FET can be formed of a split gate; a first gate terminal coupled to a first portion of the split gate for receiving a first input signal; a second gate terminal coupled to a second portion of the split gate for receiving a second input signal; a source terminal coupled to a ground line; and a drain terminal coupled to the conducting device.

Pressurizer dynamic model and emulated programmable logic controllers for nuclear power plants cybersecurity investigations

This work demonstrates the functionality of the pressurizer using a fast-running three regions, non-equilibrium model and control programs of emulated PLCs. The state variables from an integrated model of primary loop in a representative PWR plant are communicated to the pressurizer’s emulated PLCs using a synchronized data transfer function. In turn, the PLCs communicate back instructions to the pressurizer model to adjust the pressure and water level to remain within preprogramed setpoints. Pressurizer model simultaneously solves the coupled mass and energy conservation equations in the saturated vapor and saturated and subcooled liquid regions using fixed step solver. Results demonstrate the response of the pressurizer model linked to an emulated pressure and water level PLCs in a simulated transient involving surge-in and surge-out events. The 50 ms response delay time for the emulated PLC insignificantly affects operation and predictions of the pressurizer model.

Blockchain Smart Contract Reference Framework and Program Logic Architecture for Transactive Energy Systems

This paper proposes a reference framework for a transactive energy market based on blockchain. The framework was designed based on the engineering requirements of a distribution-scale market; including participant needs, expected market transactions, and the cybersecurity constructs required to support a fair, secure and efficient market operation. It leverages the existing blockchain primitives to provide clear value propositions to the transactive market, including identity management (access control), data security (integrity), resiliency (decentralization, scalability and performance). The validity of the proposed framework is demonstrated using a real-time 5-min double-auction market. The results highlight its benefits while providing strong validation of applicability to blockchain within transactive energy systems.

Logical approach to tritium vacuum pump selection for fusion applications

Vacuum pumps have been used for tritium processing since the 1940s following the isolation of pure tritium. The largest problem facing tritium vacuum pumps is the tritium radioactive decay. The beta particles, recoil energy, and subsequent radical formations are detrimental to most carbon-based materials. Carbon materials, such as plastics, elastomers, carbon fiber, activated carbon, etc., react with tritium to form methane and in the process strip material from the carbonbased material. Other reactions can be self-catalyzing, as is the case with nitrogen and tritium forming tritiated ammonia at room temperature and pressure. Tritium also readily isotopically exchanges with surface -OH groups, increasing the amount of protium in the gas stream while creating a tritium holdup on the surface. Metals are the preferred material when working with tritium, but tritium will permeate into and through almost all metals at some point. The entrapped tritium can decay inside the metal, creating local helium distortions that can impact the structural properties above and beyond the hydrogen embrittlement issue tritium can cause.

Independent temperature and humidity control of a precooled desiccant air cooling system with proportional and fuzzy logic + proportional based controllers

Providing room comfort quickly by using less energy in cooling systems is important both in terms of efficiency and environment. In this study, independent temperature/humidity control strategies are designed for precooled desiccant based evaporative cooling system to provide room comfort quickly with less energy. Therefore, the speed controls of the system's actuators become important depending on the room, cooler and atmosphere conditions. The mathematical models are obtained to determine the relation between voltages of actuators and the variations in the room's temperature and humidity. After that, new control strategies are developed based on Proportional and Fuzzy+Proportional techniques and the control performance is increased by adding extra modes to the operation of the actuators. The effects of the control techniques on the cooling performance and energy consumption were investigated for different cases. It has been observed that the room temperature and relative humidity reach the set values in a short time for both techniques and are successfully kept at these values under the disturbances. By using Fuzzy+Proportional controller, the robustness of the cooler increases due to more precisely adjustment of controller's parameter depending the system conditions. Finally, both control strategies provide more than 20% energy savings compared to the traditional ON/OFF control.

Multiplexed characterization of rationally designed promoter architectures deconstructs combinatorial logic for IPTG-inducible systems

Abstract A crucial step towards engineering biological systems is the ability to precisely tune the genetic response to environmental stimuli. In the case of Escherichia coli inducible promoters, our incomplete understanding of the relationship between sequence composition and gene expression hinders our ability to predictably control transcriptional responses. Here, we profile the expression dynamics of 8269 rationally designed, IPTG-inducible promoters that collectively explore the individual and combinatorial effects of RNA polymerase and LacI repressor binding site strengths. We then fit a statistical mechanics model to measured expression that accurately models gene expression and reveals properties of theoretically optimal inducible promoters. Furthermore, we characterize three alternative promoter architectures and show that repositioning binding sites within promoters influences the types of combinatorial effects observed between promoter elements. In total, this approach enables us to deconstruct relationships between inducible promoter elements and discover practical insights for engineering inducible promoters with desirable characteristics.

Quantum logic gate synthesis as a Markov decision process

Reinforcement learning has witnessed recent applications to a variety of tasks in quantum programming. The underlying assumption is that those tasks could be modeled as Markov decision processes (MDPs). Here, we investigate the feasibility of this assumption by exploring its consequences for single-qubit quantum state preparation and gate compilation. By forming discrete MDPs, we solve for the optimal policy exactly through policy iteration. We find optimal paths that correspond to the shortest possible sequence of gates to prepare a state or compile a gate, up to some target accuracy. Our method works in both the absence and presence of noise and compares favorably to other quantum compilation methods, such as the Ross–Selinger algorithm. This work provides theoretical insight into why reinforcement learning may be successfully used to find optimally short gate sequences in quantum programming.
