2024 OES-Environmental 2024 State of the Science Report, Chapter 11: Summary and Path Forward

The 2024 State of the Science report has brought together the most up-to-date information on potential environmental effects of marine renewable energy (MRE) development on marine animals, habitats, and ecosystem processes, as well as social and economic systems, using information that is publicly available as well as expert input. The report has been reviewed by over 56 experts. The reviewers provided in excess of one thousand comments during the drafting of the report that have been addressed in this version. The OES-Environmental country representatives from the 16 participating countries helped to scope the entirety of the report and provided valuable contributions to all chapters. The input from these contributors and reviewers has resulted in the most complete compendium of research and monitoring findings possible. While there is new and exciting research underway that should further illuminate the risks of MRE stressor-receptor interactions in the near future, suppositions and incomplete results from unpublished studies were not included in order to maintain the integrity, and decrease the uncertainty, of the messages in this report

Face mask integrated with flexible and wearable manganite oxide respiration sensor

Face masks are key personal protective equipment for reducing exposure to viruses and other environmental hazards such as air pollution. Integrating flexible and wearable sensors into face masks can provide valuable insights into personal and public health. The advantages that a breath-monitoring face mask requires, including multi-functional sensing ability and continuous, long-term dynamic breathing process monitoring, have been underdeveloped to date. Here, we design an effective human breath monitoring face mask based on a flexible La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO)/Mica respiration sensor. The sensor’s capabilities and systematic measurements are investigated under two application scenes, namely clinical monitoring mode and daily monitoring mode, to monitor, recognise, and analyse different human breath status, i.e., cough, normal breath, and deep breath. This sensing system exhibits super-stability and multi-modal capabilities in continuous and long-time monitoring of the human breath. We determine that during monitoring human breath, thermal diffusion in LSMO is responsible for the change of resistance in flexible LSMO/Mica sensor. Both simulated and experimental results demonstrate good discernibility of the flexible LSMO/Mica sensor operating at different breath status. Our work opens a route for the design of novel flexible and wearable electronic devices.

SPT-3G D1: Maps of the millimeter-wave sky from 2019 and 2020 observations of the SPT-3G Main field

Maps of the sky in millimeter wavelengths contain rich information on cosmology through anisotropies of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Creating multifrequency sky maps of anisotropies in the $I$, $Q$, and $U$ Stokes parameters is one of the first steps of CMB cosmology analyses. In this work, we describe the production and validation of a set of sky maps from the South Pole Telescope's third-generation camera, SPT-3G. The maps are from data taken in frequency bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz and taken during the first two years, 2019 and 2020, of the SPT-3G Main survey, which covers $4\%$ of the sky. We applied high-pass filters to time series of individual detectors and binned the filtered time series samples into map pixels. After that, we calibrated and cleaned the maps to reduce known systematic errors. In addition, we searched for other systematic errors through null tests and mitigated a significant systematic error detected therein. The white noise levels of the full-depth maps of the $I$ Stokes parameter are $5.4$, $4.4$, and $16.2$$\mathrm{μK}$-$\mathrm{arcmin}$ in the 95, 150, and 220 GHz bands, respectively, and $8.4$, $6.6$, and $25.8$$\mathrm{μK}$-$\mathrm{arcmin}$ for $Q/U$. These maps are the deepest to date used for measurements of mid-to-high-$\ell$ primary temperature and $E$-mode polarization CMB anisotropies, and reconstructions of the CMB gravitational lensing potential. We make these maps and supporting data products publicly accessible.

Comprehensive Assessment of the Accuracy of the Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory for Predicting Binary Adsorption of Gas Mixtures in Porous Materials

Quantifying the adsorption of chemical mixtures in porous adsorbents is critical to developing these materials for useful separation applications. The ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) is the most widely applied mixing theory for predicting mixture adsorption using single-component adsorption data, but a perceived lack of experimental data has limited previous efforts to explore the accuracy of IAST in a systematic way. In this paper, we take advantage of a large collection of binary experimental data for gas adsorption that became available recently to tackle this issue. Specifically, we identify more than 400 examples in which binary adsorption data and single-component data are available in the same publication and apply IAST to all these examples. This analysis includes experimental data from 63 gas mixtures of 37 different molecular species and 174 different adsorbents. In addition to being the most systematic evaluation to date of the accuracy of IAST for gas adsorption, these data will be valuable for future efforts to test or develop mixing theories that improve upon IAST.

Occurrence and molecular characterization of Enterocytozoon bieneusi in wild and domestic animal species in Portugal

Abstract The phylum Microsporidia encompasses a diverse group of obligate, intracellular, and spore-forming organisms able to infect a wide range of animal hosts. Among them, Enterocytozoon bieneusi is the most frequently reported species in humans and animals. Little is known about the presence and epidemiology of E. bieneusi in wildlife. We investigated E. bieneusi occurrence and genetic diversity in wild and domestic mammals, through molecular-detection methods, from different regions across Portugal. A total of 756 samples were collected from 288, 242, and 226 wild carnivores, wild ungulates, and domestic animals, respectively. Overall, eight specimens were E. bieneusi-positive (1.1%, 8/756) obtained from five wild (Iberian lynx, Iberian wolf, red fox, stone marten, and wild boar) and one domestic (sheep) host. Nucleotide sequence analysis identified four genotypes of E. bieneusi, Type IV, Wildboar3, BEB6, and PtEbIX. Three of those genotypes belong to Groups 1 (Type IV and Wildboar3) and 2 (BEB6), which are known to contain genotypes capable of infecting a variety of hosts, including humans, highlighting their public health importance. PtEbIX belongs to the dog-specific Group 11. This study represents the first, largest, and most comprehensive molecular-based epidemiology survey carried out in Portugal in wild and domestic animals to date and the first worldwide identification of E. bieneusi in wolf species. Our study showed that wild carnivores and ungulates may act as reservoirs of zoonotic genotypes of E. bieneusi, establishing their role in maintaining the sylvatic cycle of this parasite while representing a potential source of infection for humans and domestic animals.

The CAI Database: 26 Al– 26 Mg Isotope Systematics

We present a publicly available calcium–aluminum-rich inclusion (CAI) database that focuses on the initial 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 ratio in CAIs, designed in a way that researchers in cosmochemistry and astrophysics may find useful. To date, the database contains 497 CAIs from 75 peer-reviewed papers. The CAIs are from all chondrite groups and cover different CAI types, textures, and sizes. The database includes the paper; the host meteorite; the CAI name and type; the 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 , δ 26 Mg$^*_0$, and δ 25 Mg values and their uncertainties; the number of regression points; the maximum 27 Al/ 24 Mg; the mean-squared weighted deviation; the CAI size; and CAI descriptions. We grouped the CAIs in different ways to discuss 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 ratio distributions with implications for the CAI formation timeline. Overall, we agree with previous authors that CAIs have a bimodal 26 Al distribution: CAIs with robust isochrons (n = 151) have a median 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 = 4.8 × 10 −5 (with a 1σ standard error of 0.1), while those with isotopic anomalies (n = 87) have a median 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 = 0.3 × 10 −5 (with a 1σ standard error of 0.2). However, the large standard deviation of both groups (1.3 and 2.3, respectively) indicates that the 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 values scatter significantly within each population. CAI types and groups can have distinct 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 and δ 26 Mg$^*_0$, but the unmelted inclusions (n = 33) have the highest median 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 = 5.1 × 10 −5 and a low median δ 26 Mg$^*_0$ = −0.05‰. We find slightly different 26 Al/ 27 Al 0 distributions between CAI chondrite types, but no differences between petrographic types or sizes. These observations can help us to understand CAI formation in the context of astrophysical models.

A view on the current and future impact of research reactors

Full text of publication follows. The current fleet of nuclear research reactors worldwide is nearly 70 years old. These reactors have proven to be extremely valuable tools of nuclear science and engineering with a broad and interdisciplinary impact. To date, research reactors are utilized as tools for understanding the physics, operations, and safety of nuclear fission systems. In addition, they are used as intense sources of radiation in support of irradiation testing and nondestructive examination of materials. As this fleet of reactors ages, an urgent need exists to establish new facilities that can propel the benefit of these reactors into the 21. century. In fact, an opportunity exists to build research reactors based on technology concepts that are being considered for nuclear energy reactors. This may include high temperature gas cooled and/or molten salt based advanced and micro reactor concepts. Such future reactors should be designed to maintain the broad utility of current reactors in research and education. However, modern research reactors can be purposefully designed and instrumented to access neutronic and thermal hydraulic information that would support the development and validation of reactor multi-physics modeling and simulation techniques. In this case, the entire phenomenological paradigm of the reactor may be captured to understand the neutronic multiscale and its impact on operations and safety. Moreover, the generated data can be channeled to drive anticipatory examination of the state of the reactor. In general, a symbiotic relation may be envisioned between the modern research reactor and power reactor fleets, which could facilitate the safe and efficient implementation of clean nuclear energy. Molecular Symmetry in VQE: A Dual Approach for Trapped-Ion Simulations of Benzene

Understanding complex chemical systems—such as biomolecules, catalysts, and novel materials—is a central goal of quantum simulations. Near-term strategies hinge on the use of variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) algorithms combined with a suitable ansatz. However, straightforward application of many chemically-inspired ansatze yields prohibitively deep circuits. In this work, we employ several circuit optimization methods tailored for trapped-ion quantum devices to enhance the feasibility of intricate chemical simulations. The techniques aim to lessen the depth of the unitary coupled cluster with singles and doubles (uCCSD) ansatz's circuit compilation, a considerable challenge on current noisy quantum devices. Furthermore, we use symmetry-inspired classical post-selection methods to further refine the outcomes and minimize errors in energy measurements, without adding quantum overhead. Our strategies encompass optimal mapping from orbital to qubit, term reordering to minimize entangling gates, and the exploitation of molecular spin and point group symmetry to eliminate redundant parameters. The inclusion of error mitigation via post-selection based on known molecular symmetries improves the results to near milli-Hartree accuracy. These methods, when applied to a benzene molecule simulation, enabled the construction of an 8-qubit circuit with 69 two-qubit entangling operations, pushing the limits for variational quantum eigensolver (VQE) circuits executed on quantum hardware to date. 1 1 This manuscript has been authored in part by UT-Battelle, LLC, under contract DE-AC05-000R22725 with the US Department of Energy (DOE). Craig Energy Center Feasibility Study

Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association Inc. (“Tri-State”) provides wholesale electric power to its member cooperatives and public power districts that collectively deliver electricity to more than a million consumers in Colorado, Nebraska, New Mexico and Wyoming. The Craig Power Station has been an integral part of Tri-State’s dispatchable generation fleet that ensures an affordable, reliable and resilient energy supply for its members. The ownership of the Craig Station Unit 1&2 is a collaborative between Tri-State, Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District, Platte River Power Authority, PacifiCorp, and Public Service Company of Colorado and is known as the Yampa Project. Tri-State owns all of Craig Unit 3 and is the operator of all three units. All three of the Craig units have planned retirement dates that will not extend beyond 2028 and Tri-State Generation wanted to evaluate carbon-neutral emitting technologies that could provide approximately 300 megawatts (“MWs) of capacity and energy that will be lost after Unit 3 ceases operation, as well as provide a similar level of economic benefits to the Craig community. This report is to serve as a technology feasibility study constrained to the current land area available at the Craig site and was conducted based on the limitations of the region.

Progress Towards a Predictive Eagle Behavior and Risk Modeling Framework: Overview and Recent Validation Efforts

This presentation summarizes progress to date of the U.S. Department of Energy project, "Development of a computational framework for modeling golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) near wind farms," which focuses on stochastic behavioral modeling of soaring raptors across landscape, facility, and turbine spatiotemporal scales. This publicly available, open-source modeling framework includes behavioral models based on three different underlying principles: energy minimization at landscape scale, behavioral heuristics at landscape-facility scale, and data-driven behaviors at the facility-micro-scale. We will briefly overview the key advancements in the behavioral modeling state of the art, which leverages multiple high-resolution telemetry data sources combined with high-fidelity atmospheric flow modeling insights. We then present preliminary results from a validation study in Altamont, California. This new study involves a novel application of the Stochastic Soaring Raptor Simulator (SSRS), in a new geographic locale, to understand facility scale eagle movement patterns over time scales representative of a wind project's lifetime. For this desktop analysis (that does not depend on any high-performance computing resources), SSRS simultaneously considers a variety of wind conditions and eagle approach vectors toward a project site of interest. This work demonstrates the integration of publicly available landscape-scale atmospheric datasets, our recently improved engineering updraft models (see presentation from Thedin et al.), and our energy minimization behavioral models within the SSRS framework. While we only present results from a single behavioral model, the integration of these three modeling components forms the foundation for our more sophisticated behavioral models (see presentations from Brandes et al., Sandhu et al.) that are under active development. Results are presented in the form of presence maps, which may be applied to estimate risk to wildlife, augment ground survey data, inform wind-plant operations, or incorporated into wind-plant designs.
