Alloy softening in binary iron solid solutions

An investigation was conducted to determine softening and hardening behavior in 19 binary iron-alloy systems. Microhardness tests were conducted at four temperatures in the range 77 to 411 K. Alloy softening was exhibited by 17 of the 19 alloy systems. Alloy softening observed in 15 of the alloy systems was attributed to an intrinsic mechanism, believed to be lowering of the Peierls (lattice friction) stress. Softening and hardening rates could be correlated with the atomic radius ratio of solute to iron. Softening observed in two other systems was attributed to an extrinsic mechanism, believed to be associated with scavenging of interstitial impurities.

Comparison of rate one-half, equivalent constraint length 24, binary convolutional codes for use with sequential decoding on the deep-space channel

Virtually all previously-suggested rate 1/2 binary convolutional codes with KE = 24 are compared. Their distance properties are given; and their performance, both in computation and in error probability, with sequential decoding on the deep-space channel is determined by simulation. Recommendations are made both for the choice of a specific KE = 24 code as well as for codes to be included in future coding standards for the deep-space channel. A new result given in this report is a method for determining the statistical significance of error probability data when the error probability is so small that it is not feasible to perform enough decoding simulations to obtain more than a very small number of decoding errors.

Mass determination for the X-ray binary system Vela X-1 (equals 3U 0900-40)

From a radial velocity study of lines of He I and the heavier ions of HD 77581 (=Vela X-1), orbital elements for this X-ray binary system are derived. Together with the orbital elements given by Rappaport and McClintock from X-ray pulsar results, this enables determination of masses for both the X-ray and the early type supergiant component.

OSO-8 observing schedule for X-ray binaries

Six different instruments on OSO-8 have observed several binary X-ray sources between energies of 0.13 keV and 1 MeV at various times since 21 June 1975. The schedule for these observations is given, as well as the present plan for such future observations through July 1976. Included is the OSO-8 observing schedule for the transient X-ray source A0620-00.

On the sputtering of binary compounds

A simple physical model is presented to describe some aspects of the sputtering of compound targets. In particular, expressions are developed for the partial sputtering yields for binary systems in terms of the elemental sputtering rates, the stoichiometric concentrations and surface binding energy. The partial yields depend non-linearly on the bulk target concentrations. Comparison of the theoretical predictions with the data on sputtering of PtSi, NiSi and Cu3Au indicates that the general features are well described.

Power spectra of sinusoidal amplitude-modulated binary signals

Power spectra for binary phase-shift keyed (PSK) and frequency-shift keyed (FSK) signals with combined sinusoidal amplitude modulation by the bit rate clock are presented. Such signal formats have application in 'burst' communication systems wherein reliable bit synchronization is provided with relative receiver simplicity. Effects of the clock amplitude modulation index and phase are considered, and corresponding power spectra are illustrated. Further, effects of the clock parameters on the rate of spectral rolloff are given and compared with those of conventional PSK and FSK spectra.

Strain effect on the electronic density of states and dc conductivity of disordered binary alloys

A single-band model calculation is developed for the effect of strain on the temperature variation of the electronic density of states and the electrical onductivity of disordered binary alloys. Experimentally, strain has only a small effect on the temperature variation of the conductivity. Shifts in the Fermi level and distortions of the density of states under different strains are found from the calculations. The small change in the temperature variation of conductivity under strain is a result of competition between these two effects. Methods to extract physical parameters characterizing alloys from measurements of the strain and temperature variation of the resistivity are discussed. Suggestions are also made about materials-selection criteria for strain-gauge applications.

Mass flow in the O7f binary UW Canis Majoris. II

The far-ultraviolet spectrum of UW CMa was obtained from the telescope spectrometer on the Copernicus satellite at about phase 0.25 in order to supplement earlier observations of the same kind made near phase 0.75. Analysis of the data shows that the high-temperature gas giving rise to the P Cygni features in the far-ultraviolet spectrum is located primarily around the entire binary system and does not share in the motion of either component. The effects of radiation pressure on the Roche (Jacobian) equipotential surfaces and in generating a stellar wind are discussed.

Image registration using binary boundary maps

Registration technique that matches binary boundary maps extracted from raw data, rather than matching actual data, is considerably faster than other techniques. Boundary maps, which are digital representations of regions where image amplitudes change significantly, typically represent data compression of 60 to 70 percent. Maps allow average products to be computed with addition rather than multiplication, further reducing computation time.

Thermodynamic properties of gaseous fluorocarbons and isentropic equilibrium expansions of two binary mixtures of fluorocarbons and argon

Equations and computer code are given for the thermodynamic properties of gaseous fluorocarbons in chemical equilibrium. In addition, isentropic equilibrium expansions of two binary mixtures of fluorocarbons and argon are included. The computer code calculates the equilibrium thermodynamic properties and, in some cases, the transport properties for the following fluorocarbons: CCl2F, CCl2F2, CBrF3, CF4, CHCl2F, CHF3, CCL2F-CCl2F, CCLF2-CClF2, CF3-CF3, and C4F8. Equilibrium thermodynamic properties are tabulated for six of the fluorocarbons(CCl3F, CCL2F2, CBrF3, CF4, CF3-CF3, and C4F8) and pressure-enthalpy diagrams are presented for CBrF3.

Performance of binary FSK data transmission systems

Matched-filter detection of binary signals is discussed in terms of the probability of bit error. The equations for the probability of error are derived for coherent phase shift keying, and coherent frequency shift keying (FSK). Suboptimum detection of FSK signals is also discussed for discriminators.

Effects of gravity reduction on phase equilibria. Part 1: Unary and binary isostructural solids

Analysis of the Skylab II M553 Experiment samples resulted in the hypothesis that the reduced gravity environment was altering the melting and solidification reactions. A theoretical study was conducted to define the conditions under which such alteration of phase relations is feasible, determine whether it is restricted to space processing, and, if so, ascertain which alloy systems or phase reactions are most likely to demonstrate such effects. Phase equilibria of unary and binary systems with a single solid phase (unary and isomorphous) were considered.

The astrometric binary Mu Cassiopeiae - Photographically almost resolved

Photographic observations of the Population II subdwarf astrometric binary Mu Cas are described which almost resolve the components and permit an estimate of their magnitudes and separation. Red- and blue-light photographs of the system were taken during an observing period when the component separation was maximum. The separation of the two components is estimated to be about 1.5 arcsec, position angles of about 194 and 201 deg are determined for the two years of the observing period, and the apparent magnitude of the faint companion is found to be approximately 10.

Circumstellar matter in the binary V Puppis

Results are reported for Copernicus observations of the double-lined binary V Puppis in the wavelength region from 1155 to 1310 A with a resolution of 0.2 A. The sharp-lined UV absorption spectrum is found to provide a line of sight dominated by an apparently 'textbook' H II region in a Stromgren sphere surrounding the stars. Several characteristics of this H II region are deduced by analyzing absorption features arising from excited fine-structure states of N II and Si II. Evidence is given for the presence of a normal interstellar H I region containing H2 and a separate H I region which could be the transition zone of the H II region. A possible blueshifted N V feature is noted in absorption. It is suggested that the H(+) emission measure and a characteristic size and shape for the H II region can probably be determined by optical observations of Balmer recombination lines within about 1 deg of V Puppis.

Orbital elements and masses for the SMC X-1/Sanduleak 160 binary system

The binary X-ray source SMC X-1 was observed with the SAS-3 satellite for approximately four days (February 26-29, 1976). Sufficient timing data were obtained on the 0.71 s X-ray pulsations to measure the Doppler velocity curve of the X-ray source and thereby derive orbital and stellar parameters for the system. The projected velocity of the X-ray star is 301.5 plus or minus 2.0 (1 sigma) km/s, and the corresponding mass function is 11.05 plus or minus 0.22 (1 sigma) solar masses. Combining the X-ray timing data with constraints imposed by the X-ray eclipse duration and the available optical data on Sk 160, a range of allowable values of not less than 1.1 and not greater than 4.0 solar masses for the mass of the X-ray star is obtained.
