Sub-Seasonal Variability of the Asian Summer Monsoon Transport of CO and Aerosols to the UTLS and Implications for Global Atmospheric Composition

The upper troposphere/ lower stratosphere (UTLS) is a climate sensitive region. The Asian summer monsoon (ASM) is a major component in the climate system. It transports aerosols and trace gases from the most polluted regions in Asia to UTLS where they spread out to the global atmosphere. Although ASM is a seasonal phenomenon with strongest global influences usually seen in summer, it is highly dynamic and connected to other weather and climate systems, with significant spatial and temporal variability ranging from sub-seasonal weather scale to multi-year climate scale. The interplay of multi-scale dynamics inevitably determines the variability of the transport pathways and atmospheric composition in the UTLS.

Solar Irradiance Variability Monitor for the Galileo Solar Space Telescope Mission: Concept and Challenges

Long and reliable total solar irradiance (TSI) time series is one of the essential parameters for understanding solar contributions to climate change. The minor fluctuations of TSI in long timescales could impact the energy balance. Despite the improvement of accurate measurements provided by the instruments, at the time, long-term TSI variability and its effects had not been established. The space-borne radiometer era provided observations in short timescales from minutes to years. Therefore, this study presents an overview of irradiance observations, highlighting the importance of following its variability in different time scales. In this context, the Galileo Solar Space Telescope that has been developed by the Institute for Space Research (INPE), Brazil, includes the Irradiance Monitor Module with a radiometer cavity like the classical design and a next-generation compact radiometer.

Climate Variability and Simultaneous Breadbasket Yield Shocks as Observed in Long-Term Yield Records

That climate variability and change can potentially force multiple simultaneous breadbasket crop yield shocks has been established. But research quantifying the mechanisms behind such simultaneous shocks has been constrained by short records of crop yields. Here we compile a dataset of subnational crop yields in 25 countries dating back to 1900 to study the frequency and trends in multiple breadbasket yield shocks and how large-scale climate anomalies on interannual timescales have affected multiple breadbasket yield shocks over the last century. We find that major simultaneous breadbasket yield shocks have occurred in at least three, four, or five of nine breadbaskets 10.3%, 2.3% and 1.1% of the time for maize and 18.4%, 4.6% and 2.3% of the time for wheat. Furthermore, we find that multiple breadbasket yield shocks decreased in frequency even as those breadbaskets experience increasingly frequent climate-related shocks. For both maize and wheat breadbaskets, there were fewer simultaneous yield shocks during the 1975–2017 time period as compared to 1931–1975. Finally, we find that interannual modes of climate variability - such as the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD), and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) - have all affected the relative probability of simultaneous yield shocks in pairs of breadbaskets by up to 20–40% in both maize and wheat breadbaskets. While past literature has focused on the effects of ENSO, we find that at the global scale the NAO affects the overall number of wheat yield shocks most strongly despite only affecting northern hemisphere breadbaskets.

The Variable Detection of Atmospheric Escape around the Young, Hot Neptune AU Mic b

Photoevaporation is a potential explanation for several features within exoplanet demographics. Atmospheric escape observed in young Neptune-sized exoplanets can provide insight into and characterize which mechanisms drive this evolution and at what times they dominate. AU Mic b is one such exoplanet, slightly larger than Neptune (4.19 R ⊕ ). It closely orbits a 23 Myr pre-main-sequence M dwarf with an orbital period of 8.46 days. We obtained two visits of AU Mic b at Lyα with Hubble Space Telescope (HST)/Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph. One flare within the first HST visit is characterized and removed from our search for a planetary transit. We present a nondetection in our first visit, followed by the detection of escaping neutral hydrogen ahead of the planet in our second visit. The outflow absorbed ∼30% of the star’s Lyα blue wing 2.5 hr before the planet’s white-light transit. We estimate that the highest-velocity escaping material has a column density of 10 13.96 cm −2 and is moving 61.26 km s −1 away from the host star. AU Mic b’s large high-energy irradiation could photoionize its escaping neutral hydrogen in 44 minutes, rendering it temporarily unobservable. Our time-variable Lyα transit ahead of AU Mic b could also be explained by an intermediate stellar wind strength from AU Mic that shapes the escaping material into a leading tail. Future Lyα observations of this system will confirm and characterize the unique variable nature of its Lyα transit, which, combined with modeling, will tune the importance of stellar wind and photoionization.

Optimization of Variable Depth Acoustic Liners with Grazing Flow

Acoustic liners, typically used as a noise control treatment in the engine nacelles of conventional aircraft, are being considered for noise treatment in the proprotor ducts of a vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. This work considers a new optimization method to design an acoustic liner with variable depth cavities for broadband and low-frequency attenuation. This method, termed the direct optimization method, minimizes the radiated sound from a duct. In this paper, the new method is compared with an existing indirect method to design multiple variable depth acoustic liners. Acoustic impedances of liners designed using both methods are predicted using a semianalytical impedance model and impedance predictions for two designs are compared to experimental results acquired from grazing flow impedance testing. For the work presented here, liners designed using the indirect approach provide improved attenuation spectra over those designed using the direct approach but potential improvements to the performance of the direction optimization method are discussed.

Variable light source with a million-to-one intensity ratio

A wide range, variable intensity light source of constant color characteristics has been developed for testing and calibrating photomultiplier tubes. A light attenuator first diffuses light from a constant source, then permits variable attenuation through a series of chambers and adjustable apertures.

A study to determine the flight characteristics and handling qualitites of variable geometry spacecraft. Volume 3: Low L/D concept with fold-down wings

A study was conducted to determine the flight characteristics and wing deployment transients for a variable geometry spacecraft concept having a hypersonic lift-to-drag ratio near 1.0, and employing fold-down wings. Unpowered flight conditions were considered throughout the study. The body of the spacecraft uses a trapezoidal cross section. The variable geometry wings, stowed in the sides of the vehicle, are deployed at transonic speeds.

Thermal test plan for large variable conductance heat pipe

The procedure to be followed in determining the thermal performance of a variable conductance heat pipe is documented. The nominal one-inch-diameter aluminum pipe is of a cold reservoir type whose overall length is nine feet. It has a capacity of 2 to 4 kW's equivalent to 8 to 16 kW-ft and an overall temperature control range of 50 to 95 F. Initial tests will be conducted with the pipe charged with ammonia to determine its capacity limits. Following introduction of the noncondensible gas (nitrogen), the variable conductance features of the pipe will be used.

Analysis and testing of high entrainment single nozzle jet pumps with variable mixing tubes

An analytical model was developed to predict the performance characteristics of axisymmetric single-nozzle jet pumps with variable area mixing tubes. The primary flow may be subsonic or supersonic. The computer program uses integral techniques to calculate the velocity profiles and the wall static pressures that result from the mixing of the supersonic primary jet and the subsonic secondary flow. An experimental program was conducted to measure mixing tube wall static pressure variations, velocity profiles, and temperature profiles in a variable area mixing tube with a supersonic primary jet. Static pressure variations were measured at four different secondary flow rates. These test results were used to evaluate the analytical model. The analytical results compared well to the experimental data. Therefore, the analysis is believed to be ready for use to relate jet pump performance characteristics to mixing tube design.

Dynamic characteristics of a two-stage variable-mass flexible missile with internal flow

A general formulation of the dynamical problems associated with powered flight of a two stage flexible, variable-mass missile with internal flow, discrete masses, and aerodynamic forces is presented. The formulation comprises six ordinary differential equations for the rigid body motion, 3n ordinary differential equations for the n discrete masses and three partial differential equations with the appropriate boundary conditions for the elastic motion. This set of equations is modified to represent a single stage flexible, variable-mass missile with internal flow and aerodynamic forces. The rigid-body motion consists then of three translations and three rotations, whereas the elastic motion is defined by one longitudinal and two flexural displacements, the latter about two orthogonal transverse axes. The differential equations are nonlinear and, in addition, they possess time-dependent coefficients due to the mass variation.

Preprocessing techniques to reduce atmospheric and sensor variability in multispectral scanner data.

Multispectral scanner data are potentially useful in a variety of remote sensing applications. Large-area surveys of earth resources carried out by automated recognition processing of these data are particularly important. However, the practical realization of such surveys is limited by a variability in the scanner signals that results in improper recognition of the data. This paper discusses ways by which some of this variability can be removed from the data by preprocessing with resultant improvements in recognition results.
