Feasibility of Percutaneous Intrahepatic Split by Microwave Ablation (PISA) After Portal Vein Embolization for Hypertrophy of Future Liver Remnant: The Radiological Stage-1 ALPPS

PurposeTo assess the feasibility of radiological stage-1 ALPPS, associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy, by combining portal vein embolization (PVE) with percutaneous intrahepatic split by ablation (PISA).Materials and MethodsThree patients (mean age 65.0 ± 7.3 years) underwent PVE and PISA. PISA was performed 21 days after PVE by microwave ablation to create a continuous intrahepatic cutting plane. Abdominal CT examinations were performed before and after PVE and PISA. The future liver remnant (FLR) volume was calculated by semiautomatic segmentation, and increase was reported as a percentage of the pre-procedural volume. The FLR/body weight (FLR/BW) ratio was calculated; a ratio greater than 0.8% was considered sufficient for guaranteeing adequate liver function after surgery. The liver function before and after PISA was also evaluated by 99mTc-mebrofenin hepatobiliary scintigraphy. Patients’ laboratory tests, performance status, ability to walk were assessed before and after PVE and PISA procedures.ResultsNo procedure-related complications were recorded. The FLR volume increase in each patient was 42.0, 33.1 and 30.4% within 21 days of PVE and 109.3, 68.1 and 71.7% within 10 days after PISA. The FLR/BW ratios were 0.76, 0.66, 0.63% and 1.13, 0.83, 0.83% after PVE and PISA procedures, respectively. Two patients underwent successful right hepatectomy; in one patient, despite 1.13% FLR/BW, surgery was not performed because of the absolute rejection of blood transfusion due to the patient’s religious convictions.ConclusionRadiological stage-1 ALPPS is a feasible, minimally invasive option to be further investigated to become an effective alternative to surgical stage-1 ALPPS.

Standardization Gaps in Powder Feedstock Characterization and Establishing Acceptability for Reuse in Additive Manufacturing

Characterization techniques for powder feedstocks used in additive manufacturing (AM) have long been relied upon to describe the inputs to an AM workflow. However, functional gaps remain between tests to measure intrinsic and extrinsic properties with the direct performance within AM equipment. Furthermore, the common practice of reusing powder through multiple build cycles introduces effects and changes to feedstock performance that are otherwise difficult to measure quantitatively. Here, standardization and the development of new test methods have not kept pace with the rapid evolution of the AM industry and its reliance on highly coupled process-structure–property-performance relationships.

A Unit Testing Framework for Scientific Legacy Code

Large-scale scientific applications play important roles in supporting research. However, it is often very expensive and time-consuming to make changes to, maintain and evolve the scientific code due to its complexity and poor programming skills of researchers. Therefore, in order to visualize scientific code architecture to optimize software design, understand undocumented source code, and analyze software flow and functionality, we first introduce a unit testing framework (UTF). Then, because such infrastructure's performance is very crucial in practical use since the scientific legacy applications simulate instances in a long period of time, we improve the UTF by applying Message Passing based Parallelization and parallel I/O operations. Furthermore, due to the scientific code has enormous state data and the I/O capacity on the server is limited, we apply in situ data analysis method to encounter fewer resource limitations, and adopt signal processing to greatly reduce data transfer. Last, we demonstrated the correctness and high-efficiency of our framework for legacy Earth model on Titan supercomputer.

Distributionally Robust Partially Observable Markov Decision Process with Moment-Based Ambiguity

In this paper, we consider a distributionally robust partially observable Markov decision process (DR-POMDP), where the distribution of the transition-observation probabilities is unknown at the beginning of each decision period, but their realizations can be inferred using side information at the end of each period after an action being taken. We build an ambiguity set of the joint distribution using bounded moments via conic constraints and seek an optimal policy to maximize the worst-case (minimum) reward for any distribution in the set. We show that the value function of DR-POMDP is piecewise linear convex with respect to the belief state and propose a heuristic search value iteration method for obtaining lower and upper bounds of the value function. We conduct numerical studies and demonstrate the computational performance of our approach via testing instances of a dynamic epidemic control problem. Our results show that DR-POMDP can produce more robust policies under misspecified distributions of transition-observation probabilities as compared to POMDP but has less costly solutions than robust POMDP. The DR-POMDP policies are also insensitive to varying parameter in the ambiguity set and to noise added to the true transition-observation probability values obtained at the end of each decision period.

Lagrangian and Eulerian Supersaturation Statistics in Turbulent Cloudy Rayleigh–Bénard Convection: Applications for LES Subgrid Modeling

Abstract Turbulent fluctuations of scalar and velocity fields are critical for cloud microphysical processes, e.g., droplet activation and size distribution evolution, and can therefore influence cloud radiative forcing and precipitation formation. Lagrangian and Eulerian water vapor, temperature, and supersaturation statistics are investigated in direct numerical simulations (DNS) of turbulent Rayleigh–Bénard convection in the Pi Convection Cloud Chamber to provide a foundation for parameterizing subgrid-scale fluctuations in atmospheric models. A subgrid model for water vapor and temperature variances and covariance and supersaturation variance is proposed, valid for both clear and cloudy conditions. Evaluation of phase change contributions through an a priori test using DNS data shows good performance of the model. Supersaturation is a nonlinear function of temperature and water vapor, and relative external fluxes of water vapor and heat (e.g., during entrainment-mixing and phase change) influence turbulent supersaturation fluctuations. Although supersaturation has autocorrelation and structure functions similar to the independent scalars (temperature and water vapor), the autocorrelation time scale of supersaturation differs. Relative scalar fluxes in DNS without cloud make supersaturation PDFs less skewed than the adiabatic case, where they are highly negatively skewed. However, droplet condensation changes the PDF shape response: it becomes positively skewed for the adiabatic case and negatively skewed when the sidewall relative fluxes are large. Condensation also increases correlations between water vapor and temperature in the presence of relative scalar fluxes but decreases correlations for the adiabatic case. These changes in correlation suppress supersaturation variability for the nonadiabatic cases and increase it for the adiabatic case. Implications of this work for subgrid microphysics modeling using a Lagrangian stochastic scheme are also discussed.

Efficient Integration of Algebraic Constraint for Exponential Time Integration

This work is a continuation of a previous project where the high efficiency of exponential integration methods for DRMHD systems was demonstrated. Often algebraic constraints must also be enforced for DRMHD systems of interest. Straightforward application of exponential methods to DRMHD equations with constraints leads to prohibitively computationally expensive methods. In this work, we propose new exponential schemes that allow the constraints to be removed from evaluation of exponential matrix functions which drastically reduces computational complexity by eliminating the need to perform computations enforcing constraints in exponential calculations while still preserving a high order of accuracy and allowing for a large time step even when the problem is stiff. This idea is similar to the W-methods and is achieved by carefully designing a method with the desired order of accuracy, even with an incomplete Jacobian matrix used as an argument of exponential-like functions. The constraints are accounted for by including them in the evaluation of the right-hand-side forcing function of the spatially discretized system. We study performance of the new methods on test problems and outline future research directions that this work opens.

Mechanical creep testing and characterization of Cr coated Zircaloy

Zirconium based cladding has been developed for use in light water reactor fuel applications due to the material’s desirable low neutron scattering cross section. To help improve corrosion resistance in accident conditions, such as a loss of coolant accident (LOCA), a chromium coating can be applied to the outer diameter of the Zircaloy tube. Cladding strength at reactor relevant temperatures is important for the structural performance. Stress relaxation creep testing was performed on Cr coated Zircaloy-4 to measure strain rate as a function of stress for 350 and 650°C. These were performed at both 5 ± 1 % and 7.5 ± 1 % strain. The lower temperature provides results near normal operating temperature, while the higher temperature provides results relevant to off-normal conditions where recrystallization will take place. Characterization was also performed to analyze the structure of the Cr coating and Zircaloy-4 as well as the interface between the two.

Space shuttle solid rocket booster processing and recovery operations at Kennedy Space Center

This paper describes the processing and recovery operations at Kennedy Space Center as applied to the Space Shuttle Solid Rocket Booster. The introductory portion covers the overall Space Shuttle launch vehicle with a description of the Solid Rocket Boosters and explanations of their functions. Processing operations begin with the arrival of the new or refurbished Solid Rocket Motor segments by rail cars from the manufacturer. Segment buildup is performed on the Mobile Launch Platform, and the completed major booster elements are functionally tested prior to their integration with other prime elements that comprise a complete Shuttle launch vehicle. The recovery operations following launch include Solid Rocket Booster separation, parachute deployment, splashdown, and the activities associated with retrieval of the reusable components of the Solid Rocket Boosters. Subsequently, the paper describes the processing required to thoroughly clean the retrieved items, the disassembly activities, and refurbishment steps planned for restoration of the hardware components to usable condition.

Film thickness measurements on five fluid formulations by the mercury squeeze film capacitance technique

The thinning characteristics of five fluids were studied by measuring film thickness as a function of time. The mercury squeeze film capacitance technique was used. All tests were performed at room temperature. The synthetic hydrocarbon plus a nematic liquid crystal, N-(p-methoxybenzylidene)-p-butylaniline, thinned according to a Newtonian model and retained its bulk viscosity. The synthetic hydrocarbon plus a phosphonate antiwear additive and the synthetic hydrocarbon plus n-hexadecanol produced residual thick films. The synthetic hydrocarbon base fluids and the synthetic hydrocarbon plus a paraffinic resin displayed viscosity increases during thinning, but no residual films were formed.

Morphofunctional correlations in the experimental study of myocardiopathies under the stress of forced restraint. Note 2: The influence of adrenal imbalance

Tests were performed with 70 rats to determine the effects of restraint on the functions and structure of the myocardium under varying conditions of adrenal imbalance. Results showed that in rats with adrenal imbalance, fasting and restraint produced the same biochemical alterations as in the controls. The morphologic alteractions, as well as their electric expression, were more varied and evident in the animals with adrenal imbalance. Persistence of the microscopic and electrocardiographic alterations after 72 hours restraint in the animals subjected to unilateral adrenalectomy suggests chronic evolution of the myocardial lesions. This proves the necessity of intact adrenals for a good adaptability to stress.

Hubble Space Telescope photometry of the central regions of Virgo cluster elliptical galaxies. 2: Isophote shapes

The isophotal shapes of a magnitude limited sample of Virgo ellipticals are presented. These are derived from high resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. The absence of atmospheric seeing and accurate knowledge of the Point Spread Function (PSF) allows us to perform an accurate deconvolution. Model galaxies were constructed to test the deconvolution algorithms used, and showed that we can accurately recover isophotal shape parameters down to 0.5 sec. From the isophotal parameters we can classify the galaxies in two subsamples: disky and non-disky galaxies. In three of these disky galaxies we found evidence for a nuclear stellar disk in the inner 1.5 sec. In addition these galaxies also have an outer disk, that seems to break up inside 2 sec - 3 sec. In the two galaxies for which there is kinematic evidence from the literature of a decoupled core, we found no indication for such subsystem from the isophotal shape analysis. In 80% of these early type galaxies there are indications for dust. For eight of these galaxies the dust has not been detected before.
