Laser absorptivity measurement device

A laser absorptivity measurement device uses a linearly polarized incident beam, an optical configuration comprising an internal polarizing beamsplitter that transmits the linearly polarized incident beam and a quarter-wave plate that converts linearly polarized incident beam into a circularly polarized incident beam that is reflected off a processing substrate. The quarter-wave plate and polarizing beamsplitter can then direct the reflected light back into an integrating volume, where the power of the reflected light can be measured by a photodetector. The laser absorptivity measurement device is capable of making real-time absorption efficiency measurements of a variety of laser-based processes, including laser welding and brazing, additive manufacturing, and laser marking.

Measuring the Electrochemical Corrosion of 233U-doped UO2 in a Microfluidic Device

We have developed a microfluidic, ‘particle-attached microfluidic electrochemical’ device, or PAMEC, that uses microgram quantities of radioactive materials, such as uranium dioxide (UO2), rather than bulk specimens to both observe electrochemical changes and measure spectroscopic properties. The PAMEC device reduces the need for running experiments in a shielded facility and allows for in-operando, real-time investigations of electrochemical properties and morphological changes of micrograms of particles. This novel design offers a promising platform to investigate spent nuclear fuel (SNF) and other nuclear materials under various controlled condition, and to provide insights to nuclear waste management, and fuel performance

Mg x Zn 1−x O contact to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber for photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical devices

Abstract CuGa 3 Se 5 is a promising candidate material with wide band gap for top cells in tandem photovoltaic and photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices. However, traditional CdS contact layers used with other chalcopyrite absorbers are not suitable for CuGa 3 Se 5 due to the higher position of its conduction band (CB) minimum. Mg x Zn 1− x O (MZO) is a transparent oxide with adjustable band gap and CB position as a function of magnesium composition, but its direct application is hindered by CuGa 3 Se 5 surface oxidation. Here, MZO is investigated as a contact (n-type ‘buffer’ or ‘window’) material to CuGa 3 Se 5 absorbers pretreated in Cd 2+ solution, and an onset potential close to 1 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode in 10 mM hexaammineruthenium (III) chloride electrolyte is demonstrated. The Cd 2+ surface treatment changes the chemical composition and electronic structure of the CuGa 3 Se 5 surface, as demonstrated by photoelectron spectroscopy measurements. The performance of CuGa 3 Se 5 absorber with Cd 2+ treated surface in the solid-state test structure depends on the Zn/Mg ratio in the MZO layer. The measured open circuit voltage of 925 mV is promising for tandem PEC water splitting with CuGa 3 Se 5 /MZO top cells.

Multicolor Photonic Pigments for Rotation-Asymmetric Mechanochromic Devices

Photonic crystals are extensively explored to replace inorganic pigments and organic dyes as coloring elements in printing, painting, sensing, and anti-counterfeiting due to their brilliant structural colors, chemical stability, and environmental friendliness. However, most existing photonic-crystal-based pigments can only display monochromatic colors once made, and generating multicolors has to start with designing different building blocks. In this work, a novel photonic pigment featuring highly tunable structural colors in the entire visible spectrum, made by the magnetic assembly of monodisperse nanorods into body-centered-tetragonal photonic crystals, is reported. Their prominent magnetic and crystal anisotropy makes it efficient to generate multicolors using one photonic pigment by magnetically controlling the crystal orientation. Further, the combination of angle-dependent diffraction and magnetic orientation control enables the design of rotation-asymmetric photonic films that display distinct patterns and encrypted information in response to rotation. The efficient multicolor generation through precise orientational control makes this novel photonic pigment promising in developing high-performance structural-colored materials and optical devices.

Simulation of the impact of particle recycling on the plasma in MPS-LD device based on the BOUT++ LPD module

A linear plasma device (LPD) module has been developed under the BOUT++ framework to simulate plasma transport in the MPS-LD. However, previously, the LPD module used a simplistic neutral particle model that only includes particle density and velocity, which prevents the full understanding of the plasma-neutrals interactions. In this work, we further optimize the neutral model by using a more complete neutral fluid model containing the continuity equation, momentum equation, and energy equation. The reactions such as charge exchange, excitation, and radiation collisions are included. Since the neutral particle source is mainly provided by particle recycling from the target, a particle recycling model is employed, which includes both fast reflection and slow thermal release. The upgraded LPD module is applied to simulate the argon (Ar) discharge experiment of MPS-LD, and the benchmark against experiment measurement and SOLPS-ITER simulation results are presented. Good agreements are obtained, showing the validation of the upgraded module. After that, the impact of particle recycling on Ar plasma is investigated. It is found that a higher recycling coefficient (R) promotes the achievement of high-density plasma at the target. In conclusion, the recycled Ar atoms change target plasma pressure as well as plasma-neutral collisions, which both contribute to plasma momentum loss, thus promoting the rollover of ion flux to the target.

Permanently Magnetized Insulating Thin-Film Devices by Reduction

A reduction-based manufacturing process for creating technologically important multilayer structures from lattice-matched ferromagnetic insulators and ferromagnetic conductors is reported. The process is demonstrated by growing a permanently magnetized double-layer structure, consisting of lattice-matched conducting (Ni,Co) and insulating (Ni 0.4 Co 0.6 ) 3 O 3 layers, through a single deposition cycle. The orientation of the metal cation network is preserved after reduction. Close-packing displacements of Ni and Co take place in such a manner that the in-plane hexagonal arrangement is preserved. This is critical for ensuring high-quality interfaces joining the layers. At room temperature the hysteresis loop is centered. At low temperature the oxide layer becomes ferrimagnetically ordered, accompanied by a shift of the hysteresis loop along the magnetic field axis. The shift is assigned to exchange bias phenomenon. Biaxial compressive strain is responsible for the required ferrimagnetic ordering. Finally, spin valves and closely related magnetoresistance random access memory and spin-transfer-torque magnetic random access memory devices are addressed as potential applications.

Data source authentication of synchrophasor measurement devices based on 1D-CNN and GRU

Synchrophasor measurement devices (SMDs) have been widely deployed to support real-time monitoring and control of power systems. In the meantime, data spoofing has emerged in recent years. Therefore, it is of great importance to study data authentication algorithms for detecting and defending the data spoofing effectively. Here, a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) is utilized to extract temporal signatures hidden in frequency, voltage angle and amplitude data; then the gated recurrent unit (GRU) employs these temporal signatures for data source authentication. In case studies, the performances of different algorithms are tested in large-scale power systems with numerous SMDs for the first time, and comparisons among different algorithms show that the proposed algorithm can achieve a higher accuracy of data source authentication with a shorter time window.
