A Six-Membered Concerted Mechanism for CO 2 Capture by Amines Studied under Charged Microdroplet Reaction Conditions

Carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) capture and storage represents an important technological challenge. A mechanistic understanding of interactions involved in the capture process is necessary not only for technological development but also for efficient conversion of captured CO 2 into value-added materials. Herein, we present a novel contained secondary electrospray ionization platform for studying the interactions of gaseous amines and CO 2 gas under microdroplet reaction conditions, which enables mass spectrometry (MS) characterization of CO 2 capture products and intermediates in real time. We detected [2 M + CO 2 + H] + species, which corresponds to a six-membered intermediate. DFT calculations confirmed the high stability of the protonated six-membered ring intermediate. This finding provides a plausible concerted mechanism in the microdroplet environment that excludes the involvement of thermodynamically disfavored ionic species. The carbamic acid counterpart of the final product/salt was readily characterized by tandem MS. The carbamic acid/amine salt was also isolated and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. By virtue of the fact that headspace vapors of amines are sampled, we were able to establish a high-throughput platform that enabled the CO 2 capture capacity of five different amines to be studied in under 2 min. The same device also enabled the absolute quantification of capture capacity.

Quantum Chemistry-Informed Active Learning to Accelerate the Design and Discovery of Sustainable Energy Storage Materials

Here we employed Density Functional Theory (DFT) to compute oxidation potentials of 1,400 homobenzylic ether molecules to search for the ideal sustainable redoxmer design. The generated data were used to construct an active learning model based on Bayesian optimization (BO) that targets candidates with desired oxidation potentials utilizing only a minimal number of DFT calculations. The active learning model demonstrated not only significant efficiency improvement over the random selection approach but also robust capability in identifying desired candidates in an untested set of 112,000 homobenzylic ether molecules. Our findings highlight the efficacy of quantum chemistry-informed active learning to accelerate the discovery of materials with desired properties from a vast chemical space.

Superstructures and Superconductivity Linked with Pd Intercalation in Nb 2 Pd x Se 5

Single crystals of Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 have been grown covering a broad range of palladium stoichiometries, from x = 0.68 to x = 0.95 (Pd2 occupancies 0.36 and 0.90 respectively). Miscibility gaps in the Pd stoichiometry range are related to superstructures resulting from staged filling and ordering of the partially filled Pd atom site (Pd2, Wyckoff site 2a). For Pd2 near 1/2 occupancy, a superstructure based on an incommensurate occupation wave with modulation along the monoclinic b-axis is identified. Here, a superconducting dome is found for Pd2 occupancies above 0.58, with maximum Tc for Pd2 occupancy of approximately 2/3. DFT calculations for the fully and 1/2 occupied Pd2 site show that Nb 2 Pd x Se 5 can be considered an intercalation compound for Pd2 occupancy above the minimum required for structural stability.

The Instability of Monolayer-Thick PbSe on VSe 2

Two-dimensional monolayers derived from 3D bulk structures remain a relatively unexplored class of materials because of the challenge of stabilizing non-epitaxial interfaces. Here, we report an unusual reconstruction during the deposition of precursors when targeting the synthesis of heterostructures with an odd number of PbSe monolayers. Multilayer elemental precursors of Pb|Se + V|Se were deposited to have correct number of atoms to form [(PbSe) 1+δ ] q (VSe 2 ) 1 where q is the number of PbSe monolayers in the heterostructure. Structural analysis of the self-assembled precursor via xray reflectivity, x-ray diffraction, and HAADF-STEM suggests three different behaviors upon deposition. Precursors with q 7 and even values of q have the targeted nanoarchitectures after deposition which are maintained as the products are selfassembled through a near diffusionless process. Significant lateral surface diffusion occurred during deposition of precursors with q = 1, 3, and 5 resulting in the precursor having a different nanoarchitecture than targeted. Additional perpendicular long range diffusion occurs during self-assembly of these precursors resulting in different final products than targeted. DFT calculations of PbSe blocks show that the odd numbered layers are less stable than even numbered layers, which suggests an energetic driving force for the observed rearrangement. This work highlights the importance of understanding the reaction mechanism when attempting to prepare 2D layers of constituents with bulk 3D structures.

Predicting and Synthesizing Interface Stabilized 2D Layers

The compound (Pb 2 MnSe 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 was predicted to be kinetically stable based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations on an island of Pb 2 MnSe 3 between layers of VSe 2 . This approach provides a high degree of freedom by not forcing interlayer lattice match, making it ideal to investigate the likelihood of formation of new incommensurate layer misfit structures. The free space around the island is critical, as it allows atoms to diffuse and hence exploring the local energy landscape around the initial configuration. (Pb 2 MnSe 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 was synthesized via a near diffusionless reaction from precursors where a repeating sequence of elemental layers matches the local composition and layer sequence of the predicted compound. The VSe 2 layer consists of a Se–V–Se trilayer with octahedral coordination of the V atoms. The Pb 2 MnSe 3 layer consists of three rock-salt-like planes, with a MnSe layer between the planes of PbSe. The center MnSe plane stabilizes the puckering of the outer PbSe layers. Electrical properties indicate that (Pb 2 Mn 1 Se 3 ) 0.6 VSe 2 undergoes a charge density wave transition at ~100 K and orders ferromagnetically at 35 K. Overall, the combination of theory and experiment enables a faster convergence to new heterostructures than either approach in isolation.

Two-Dimensional Copper Iodide-Based Inorganic–Organic Hybrid Semiconductors: Synthesis, Structures, and Optical and Transport Properties

A group of copper iodide-based hybrid semiconductors with the general formula of 2D-CuI(L) 0.5 (L = organic ligands) are synthesized and structurally characterized. All compounds are two-dimensional (2D) networks made of one-dimensional (1D) copper iodide staircase chains that are interconnected by bidentate nitrogen-containing ligands. Results from optical absorption and emission experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that their photoluminescence (PL) can be systematically tuned by adjusting the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies of the organic ligands. Charge carrier transport measurements were carried out for the first time on single crystals of selected 2D-CuI(L) 0.5 structures, and the results show that they possess p-type conductivity with a Hall mobility of ~1 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for 2D-CuI(pm) 0.5 and 0.13 cm 2 V -1 s -1 for 2D-CuI(pz) 0.5 , respectively. These values are comparable to or higher than the mobilities of typical highly luminescent organic semiconductors. Finally, this work suggests that robust, high-dimensional copper iodide hybrid semiconductors are promising candidates to be considered as a new type of emissive layer for light-emitting diode (LED) devices.

Role of Fluorine in Chemomechanics of Cation-Disordered Rocksalt Cathodes

The role of nanoscale chemomechanical behavior in the macroscopic performance of functional materials is well recognized. For lithium-ion battery cathodes, tremendous effort has been devoted to the development of new chemistry and structure, yet fundamental understanding of the correlation between redox processes and mechanical properties of the novel materials lags behind. In the present study, we prepare large discrete single grains of Li-excess cation-disordered rocksalts (DRX) and investigate their chemomechanical behavior at the particle level, using nanoresolution X-ray and electron-based spectro-imaging and chemical mapping techniques. While irregular cracking upon lithium extraction leads to the eventual breakdown of the baseline DRX oxide (Li 1.2 Ti 0.4 Mn 0.4 O 2 ) particles at a high delithiation state, the fluorinated-DRX (Li 1.3 Ti 0.3 Mn 0.4 O 1.7 F 0.3 ) clearly displays aligned cracking along the <001> direction. The resulting periodicity in the cracking pattern enables the particles to retain their integrity and, consequently, improved electrochemical stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that fluorination leads to increased concentration of Li+ on the (001) planes and preferential Li movements along the <001>-family directions, revealing the underlying mechanism for directional cracking. Overall, our study demonstrates the unique role of fluorine in modulating nanoscale chemomechanics, which in turn influences the evolution of charge and strain heterogeneity at the particle level. These insights provide important design guidelines in further improving DRX cathode materials.

Nanotubes from the Misfit Layered Compound (SmS) 1.19 TaS 2 : Atomic Structure, Charge Transfer, and Electrical Properties

Misfit layered compounds (MLCs) MX-TX 2 , where M, T = metal atoms and X = S, Se, or Te, and their nanotubes are of significant interest due to their rich chemistry and unique quasi-1D structure. In particular, LnX-TX 2 (Ln = rare-earth atom) constitute a relatively large family of MLCs, from which nanotubes have been synthesized. The properties of MLCs can be tuned by the chemical and structural interplay between LnX and TX 2 sublayers and alloying of each of the Ln, T, and X elements. In order to engineer them to gain desirable performance, a detailed understanding of their complex structure is indispensable. MLC nanotubes are a relative newcomer and offer new opportunities. In particular, like WS 2 nanotubes before, the confinement of the free carriers in these quasi-1D nanostructures and their chiral nature offer intriguing physical behavior. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy in conjunction with a focused ion beam are engaged to study SmS-TaS 2 nanotubes and their cross-sections at the atomic scale. The atomic resolution images distinctly reveal that Ta is in trigonal prismatic coordination with S atoms in a hexagonal structure. Furthermore, the position of the sulfur atoms in both the SmS and the TaS 2 sublattices is revealed. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy are carried out. These analyses conclude that charge transfer from the Sm to the Ta atoms leads to filling of the Ta 5d z 2 level, which is confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Transport measurements show that the nanotubes are semimetallic with resistivities in the range of 10 –4 Ω·cm at room temperature, and magnetic susceptibility measurements show a superconducting transition at 4 K.

Homologous Alkali Metal Copper Rare-Earth Chalcogenides A 2 Cu 2 n Ln 4 Q 7+ n ( n = 1, 2, 3)

Twenty-seven new members of the A 2 Cu 2n Ln 4 Q 7+n (A = Cs, Rb; Ln = La-Nd, Sm, Gd-Yb; Q = S, Se) homologous series were synthesized in one of three structural types (indicated by n = 1, 2, 3). All the compounds contained 3D frameworks with alkali-metal-containing tunnels. For each increment in n, one Cu 2 Q was added, which was incorporated into the framework as an edge-sharing tetrahedron by replacing a square planar chalcogenide site. High-throughput DFT calculations predicted many of the phases to be thermodynamically stable. These predictions were compared with the synthesis results for the phases formed in each composition space. In the syntheses, heavier lanthanides showed a preference to start forming the n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Q 5 , which is consistent with the predictions. RbCuNd 2 Se 4 and RbCuTb 2 Se 4 were found to be thermally stable under vacuum at temperatures up to 1000 °C. Optical measurements revealed band gaps of 1.55(5) and 1.62(5) eV for CsCuCe 2 Se 4 and RbCuTb 2 Se 4 , respectively, and a work function of 4.83(5) eV for CsCuPr 2 Se 4 . Additionally, some n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Qs compounds exhibit a negative phonon mode because of a copper atom coordination, which may distort to a trigonal planar geometry at sufficiently low temperatures. The dynamic instabilities and the predicted distortion in the copper tetrahedra for the n = 3 ACu 3 Ln 2 Q 5 compounds were found to have a linear relationship with the atomic number of the lanthanides and the electronegativity of the lanthanides. In conclusion, the A 2 Cu 2 n Ln 4 Q 7+n compounds can potentially find application as high-temperature thermoelectric materials and other semiconductors.

ACuZrQ 3 (A = Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se, Te): Direct Bandgap Semiconductors and Metals with Ultralow Thermal Conductivity

ACuZrQ 3 (A = Rb, Cs; Q = S, Se, Te) were synthesized as black platelet crystals. RbCuZrS 3 , RbCuZrSe 3 , and CsCuZrS 3 crystallize in the KCuZrSe 3 structure type with space group Cmcm, and RbCuZrTe 3 and CsCuZrTe 3 crystallize in the lower symmetry space group Pnma. The tellurides exhibit a second order Jahn-Teller distortion with off-centering of Zr in its octahedral environment. The magnitude of the distortion is larger in RbCuZrTe 3 than in CsCuZrTe 3 . The structures of beta-CsCuS 4 and Rb 2 Cu 5 Te 5 were also determined. CsCuZrS 3 melts at 910 C-circle and exhibits partial decomposition upon heating at 275 C-circle, while CsCuZrTe 3 melts incongruently. Our DFT calculations of RbCuZrQ 3 (Q = S, Se) and CsCuZrS 3 indicate direct gap semiconductors in agreement with experiments. ACuZrTe 3 (A = Rb, Cs) were calculated to be metals which was confirmed for RbCuZrTe 3 with variable temperature conductivity measurements and consistent with heat capacity measurements. Spectroscopic measurements found a bandgap and work function of 1.44(5) eV and 4.89(5) eV for RbCuZrS 3 and 0.95(5) eV and 4.67(5) eV for RbCuZrSe 3 , respectively. Finally, RbCuZrTe 3 did not exhibit an optical bandgap and has a work function of 4.64(5) eV. RbCuZrTe 3 exhibits a low thermal conductivity under 0.5 W m -1 K -1 at room temperature.

Flexible 2D Boron Imidazolate Framework for Polysulfide Adsorption in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

We report the "polysulfide shuttle," a process initiated by the dissolution of polysulfides, is recognized to be one of the major failure mechanisms of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Much research effort has been dedicated toward efficient cathode additives and host materials to suppress the leaching of polysulfide species. Herein, we report a new 2D metal-organic framework constituted by a tritopic ligand, boron imidazolate ([BH(Im) 3 ] - , Im = imidazole), and Co 2+ ions for lithium polysulfide adsorption. The cobalt imidazolate framework (CoN 6 -BIF) contains octahedrally coordinated Co centers that form two-dimensional layers in the a,b plane. Composite cathodes containing CoN 6 -BIF exhibited high sulfur utilization and capacity retention, resulting in improved specific capacity and cycle life compared to sulfur/carbon controls. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest that CoN 6 -BIF linkers are rotationally flexible, allowing the framework to accommodate polysulfide in the expanded pores. This unusual property of BIFs opens up new avenues for exploring flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their applications to energy storage.

Chlorination of Hydrogenated Silicon Nanosheets Revealed by Solid-State Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

We report two-dimensional silicon nanosheets (Si-NS) synthesized by topotactic deintercalation of CaSi 2 are hypothesized to consist of buckled layers of sp 3 -hybridized silicon atoms that are bonded to three other framework Si atoms and a terminal atom or functional group such as H, Cl, or OH. Here, we apply 1 H{ 35 Cl} and 29 Si{ 35 Cl} Resonance-Echo Saturation-Pulse DOuble-Resonance (RESPDOR) solid-state NMR experiments to directly confirm the presence of chlorinated Si atoms within Si-NS. Plotting the 1 H{ 35 Cl} RESPDOR dephasing as a function of the 35 Cl saturation pulse offset reveals that the 35 Cl quadrupolar coupling constant (C Q ) is 38 MHz, consistent with Cl atoms that are covalently bonded to silicon. Modeling the 1 H{ 35 Cl} RESPDOR dephasing curve shows that the Si–Si interlayer spacing is approximately 6 Å. Plane-wave density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the direct band gap transition of the Si-NS decreases with increasing chlorination and hydroxylation, suggesting that the band gap of Si-NS can be tuned by modifying the terminal atoms or functional groups.

Tuning the Radius Ratio to Enhance Thermoelectric Properties in the Zintl Compounds AM 2 Sb 2 (A = Ba, Sr; M = Zn, Cd)

Five novel Zintl phase solid solutions in the Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.13(1); 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.32(2)) system were successfully synthesized by the molten Pb metal-flux method, and the powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proved that all five title compounds adopted the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase having the orthorhombic Pnma space group (Z = 4, Pearson code oP20) with five crystallographically independent atomic sites. The previously studied BaCu 2 S 2 -type antimonides demonstrated a limited tolerance for doping in contrast to the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type antimonides. To understand the relatively narrower phase width and limited dopability of the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase than the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase in the overall Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system, the radius ratio of cations and anionic elements r + /r – for two structure types were thoroughly investigated. For the first time, the r + /r – ratio was identified as a critical factor for the phase selectivity: (1) r + /r – > 1 favored the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase, and (2) r + /r – < 1 favored the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase. Further, we also revealed the structural transformation mechanism from the more widely observed CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase to the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase as the relatively larger cationic elements were introduced to the system. A series of DFT calculations using the three hypothetical models indicated that a resonance peak near EF in the density of states curves was descended from the relatively flat band structure at several special symmetry points rationalizing the enhanced Seebeck coefficients of Ba 0.94(1) Sr 0.06 Zn 1.86(3) Cd 0.14 Sb 2 and Ba 0.96(1) Sr 0.04 Zn 1.68(2) Cd 0.32 Sb 2 . Electron localization function analysis rationalized the correlation between the polarity change of anionic Zn/Cd–Sb bonds and the charge carrier mobility on the anionic frameworks. Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were studied for the four title compounds, and the results proved that the Sr and Cd doping in the title Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system successfully enhanced the ZT values through the increased Seebeck coefficients and the reduced total thermal conductivities.

Memory Effect on the Synthesis of Perovskite-Type Li-Ion Conductor Li x La 2/3– x /3 TiO 3 (LLTO)

The structural chemistry of the solid ion-conducting Li x La 2/3–x/3 TiO 3 (LLTO) is rich with various polymorphs related to atomic segregation. Here, we explored the LLTO reaction pathway from various structurally related precursors (La 2 LiO 3 H, Li 2 TiO 3 , and Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 ), focusing on the effects of LLTO-like structural motifs in precursors using a combination of experimental and computational techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the failure of syntheses to produce LLTO below 1300 °C is due to the presence of multiple competing low-energy phases that result in competitive byproduct formation. In all syntheses where T = 1300 °C, LLTO was the sole product; however, varying phase fractions of I4/mcm and P4/nbm polymorphs and double-perovskite P4/mmm can be obtained depending on the synthesis route. This is an unusual result as at 1300 °C, LLTO should only be the ideal cubic Pm-3m perovskite structure, yet there appears to be a memory effect from the different precursors resulting in the unique phase selectivity and stabilization.

Electrochemical Oxidation in Garnet-Type Solid Electrolyte by Formation of Point Defects

All-solid-state batteries hold greater promise for improving safety and energy density over conventional battery technology employing organic liquid electrolytes. One of the required features of a Li + conducting solid electrolyte is electrochemical stability, attained thermodynamically or kinetically, within the targeted operating voltage and temperature ranges. Therefore, understanding of the oxidative or reductive degradation mechanism is important to allow the design of stable solid electrolyte materials. This work contributes to building an understanding of the oxidative degradation mechanism in lithium solid electrolytes at cell operating conditions. Here, we have focused on resolving the oxidative decomposition mechanism of Al-doped lithium garnet Li 6.28 Al 0.24 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 (LLZO) as a state-of-the-art inorganic ceramic electrolyte. By combining experimental and computational analyses, we show that oxidation of LLZO occurs by simultaneous loss of oxygen and lithium from the structure, resulting in substoichiometric LLZO, at a moderate temperature (80 °C) and a high electrode potential (4.3 V vs Li/Li + ). Based on X-ray absorption and diffraction analyses, we find that the zirconium coordination shells in LLZO contract while the crystal structure experiences positive chemical strain upon electrochemical oxidation. The results from ex situ structural characterization of both the local structure and crystal symmetry are supported by a substoichiometric LLZO with lithium and oxygen vacancies, modeled by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These chemical and structural changes in LLZO suppress effective lithium-ion conductivity by an order of magnitude. Formation of lithium and oxygen vacancies in LLZO upon electrochemical oxidation is different from prior thermodynamic predictions of phase decomposition of LLZO. The difference here is that the experiments were conducted at near-room temperature, which can hinder the kinetics of phase separation, and thus, the resultant LLZO solid electrolyte is still single-phase but substoichiometric in Li and O. In conclusion, these findings contribute an important degradation mechanism of the electrolyte, relevant for practical operational conditions of solid-state batteries.

Impact of Cation Insertion on Semiconducting Polymer Thin Films toward Electrochemical Energy Conversion

Semiconducting polymers are being explored for electrochemical and photoelectrochemical energy transformation and storage applications. For these applications, it is critical to understand how ion insertion from the electrolyte into polymer electrodes modulates the polymer electronic structure and electron doping levels. Here, this study explores electrochemical cation insertion in the n-type conjugated redox polymer P90, composed of alternating naphthalene diimide (NDI) acceptor and bithiophene (T2) donor units, where the NDI units are functionalized with heptaethylene glycol (HEG, 90%) and 2-octyl dodecyl (OD, 10%) side chains. By combining in situ techniques (UV-vis absorption and Raman spectroscopies with electrochemistry), structural analysis using ex situ grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that dications enable negative polaron and bipolaron formation in the P90 at less reducing potentials while supporting more bipolaron formation than the monocations; moreover, larger dications with smaller hydrated radii increase the maximum P90 electron doping level. We also determine that the monocations lead to more thermodynamically stabilized polarons compared with the dications. These findings highlight the critical role of cation identity in tuning electrochemical charging, charge stabilization, and electronic structure of n-type conjugated redox polymers, providing guidance on the rational design of polymer-based (photo)electrochemical applications.

Encapsulation of Ba in InSb Framework Introduces Chirality in Clathrate-Like BaIn 4 Sb 4

The discovery of Zintl compounds remains a powerful strategy for identifying materials with tunable electronic and thermal transport properties. During a concerted search for new inorganic clathrates with In–Sb frameworks, we discovered BaIn 4 Sb 4 . The composition of this phase deviates from that expected for a type-I clathrate with tetrahedral coordination of all In and Sb atoms (Ba 8 In 31 Sb 15 ). Instead, in the chiral structure of BaIn 4 Sb 4 (space group P 3 1 21, No. 152), a part of the In atoms have a trigonal planar coordination of 1In + 2Sb, forming Sb 2 –In–In–Sb 2 nonplanar fragments isostructural to diborane(4) B 2 H 4 with D 2 d symmetry. Ba atoms are located inside 16-vertex In 8 Sb 8 polyhedra, which share vertices and edges to form a chiral framework around the 3 1 screw axes. The title compound is electron-balanced, [Ba 2+ ][In 2+ ] 2 [In 3+ ] 2 [Sb3–] 4 , which was confirmed by characterization of the charge and heat transport properties. BaIn 4 Sb 4 exhibits a low thermal conductivity and high Seebeck coefficient, suggesting its untapped potential for thermoelectric applications. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that chemical doping may enhance carrier concentration and improve the originally low electrical conductivity, thus enhancing thermoelectric performance.

Probing the Mechanism of Cadmium Sulfide Cluster Nucleation and Growth via Sequential Infiltration Synthesis

Few-atom metal chalcogenide clusters may be realized through the sequential infiltration of metal–organic precursors in polymer films. However, the underlying nucleation and growth mechanisms that allow for cluster synthesis with near atomic-scale precision are not fully resolved. The kinetics of the sequential infiltration synthesis (SIS) method that control the nucleation and growth mechanisms of primarily Cd 4 S 4 -core clusters within a poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) matrix are probed with in situ UV–visible absorbance spectroscopy. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations that allow simulation of the optical properties of cluster fragments further reveal the thermodynamics that guide cluster growth within the P4VP matrix. Here, we conclude that a reactive capture mechanism for cluster nucleation and growth is dominant, although transient dimethyl cadmium adduction to the polymer backbone may contribute to cluster nucleation under shorter metal–organic purge process conditions. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GI-XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) analyses further corroborate the cluster size and atom connectivity throughout the stepwise synthesis.
