Antiferromagnetic Order and Linear Magnetoresistance in Fe-Substituted Shandite Co 3 In 2 S 2

Co 3 In 2 S 2 is a shandite phase closely related to the ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 and contains Co atoms on an ideal kagome net. Elemental substitutions in Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 have been shown to invariably suppress its magnetism, and it remains a rare example of a shandite phase with magnetic order. Here, we report a new magnetic shandite compound discovered by substituting Fe into Co 3 In 2 S 2 . Single crystals of (Co 1–x Fe x ) 3 In 2 S 2 were grown, and neutron diffraction, ac and dc magnetization, and heat capacity measurements reveal long-range antiferromagnetic order with an interesting noncollinear structure and transition temperatures from 11 to 17 K. Partially substituting Fe for Co was inspired by calculated electronic structures, which suggest that Co 3 In 2 S 2 is near a magnetic instability and shows a peak in the density of states that can be approached by hole doping. While the focus of the present work is primarily on magnetism, there is a nodal ring below the Fermi energy in Co 3 In 2 S 2 that may also provide interest from a topological perspective. Potentially related to this, we find large, linear, nonsaturating magnetoresistance in this compound. Furthermore, this work expands the scope of magnetic topological materials among shandites and motivates similar chemical manipulation studies to reveal hidden magnetic instabilities in this important family and other topological systems.

Tuning the Radius Ratio to Enhance Thermoelectric Properties in the Zintl Compounds AM 2 Sb 2 (A = Ba, Sr; M = Zn, Cd)

Five novel Zintl phase solid solutions in the Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.13(1); 0 ≤ y ≤ 0.32(2)) system were successfully synthesized by the molten Pb metal-flux method, and the powder X-ray diffraction and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses proved that all five title compounds adopted the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase having the orthorhombic Pnma space group (Z = 4, Pearson code oP20) with five crystallographically independent atomic sites. The previously studied BaCu 2 S 2 -type antimonides demonstrated a limited tolerance for doping in contrast to the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type antimonides. To understand the relatively narrower phase width and limited dopability of the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase than the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase in the overall Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system, the radius ratio of cations and anionic elements r + /r – for two structure types were thoroughly investigated. For the first time, the r + /r – ratio was identified as a critical factor for the phase selectivity: (1) r + /r – > 1 favored the BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase, and (2) r + /r – < 1 favored the CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase. Further, we also revealed the structural transformation mechanism from the more widely observed CaAl 2 Si 2 -type phase to the title BaCu 2 S 2 -type phase as the relatively larger cationic elements were introduced to the system. A series of DFT calculations using the three hypothetical models indicated that a resonance peak near EF in the density of states curves was descended from the relatively flat band structure at several special symmetry points rationalizing the enhanced Seebeck coefficients of Ba 0.94(1) Sr 0.06 Zn 1.86(3) Cd 0.14 Sb 2 and Ba 0.96(1) Sr 0.04 Zn 1.68(2) Cd 0.32 Sb 2 . Electron localization function analysis rationalized the correlation between the polarity change of anionic Zn/Cd–Sb bonds and the charge carrier mobility on the anionic frameworks. Temperature-dependent thermoelectric properties were studied for the four title compounds, and the results proved that the Sr and Cd doping in the title Ba 1–x Sr x Zn 2–y Cd y Sb 2 system successfully enhanced the ZT values through the increased Seebeck coefficients and the reduced total thermal conductivities.

Accurate Prediction of HSE06 Band Structures for a Diverse Set of Materials Using Δ-Learning

Here we used machine learning (ML) to accurately predict eigenvalues of the hybrid HSE06 functional using eigenvalues computed by the less computationally expensive PBE functional and associated electronic features based on the k-point resolved atomic band character. The ML model was trained by using eigenvalues from only one k-point for each of the 168 compounds in the training set. The HSE06 eigenvalues across all k-points were then predicted for a separate set of 169 compounds with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.13 eV, representing a significant improvement over the error of PBE-computed eigenvalues relative to that of HSE06 (MAE = 0.96 eV). These accurately predicted eigenvalues result in remarkably accurate predictions for the band structures, projected density of states, and band gaps, even though the model was not explicitly trained on these other properties. Finally, we demonstrate that our ML model has a similar accuracy for both ternary and quaternary compounds well outside the initial training set and on systems with 112 and 160 atoms, demonstrating its potential to rapidly predict HSE06-quality electronic structures of complex materials that are practically unfeasible for HSE06.

Exploration, Prediction, and Experimental Verification of Structure and Optoelectronic Properties in I 2 -Eu-IV-X 4 (I = Li, Cu, Ag; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Chalcogenide Semiconductors

Recently, there has been extensive research into photovoltaic, thermoelectric, and nonlinear optical applications of chalcogenide semiconductors within the large set of defect-resistant I 2 -II-IV-X4 (I = Li, Cu, Ag; II = Ba, Sr, Eu, Pb; IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compounds. Five Eu-including compounds have previously been reported within this family, but a comparative study of possible structures and electronic properties of all 18 Eu-based combinations is still absent. Herein, we use hybrid density functional theory to study rare-earth-including I 2 -II-IV-X 4 semiconductors with Eu on the II site, in order to further understand this family and test the geometric tolerance factor approach (reported in our previous work) as a tool for predicting potential stable structures. We investigate how the exchange mixing parameter of the HSE06 density functional, α, affects the energetic positions of electronic levels, especially of the localized f-electron orbitals near the band edges of the extended semiconductor structures, using literature photoemission and band gap data of EuS for comparison. Lowest-energy quaternary structure candidates, energy band structures, and densities of states are computationally predicted for all 18 materials. Based on its predicted photovoltaics-relevant band gap, the previously unknown compound Cu 2 EuSnSe 4 was selected and synthesized. Furthermore, the experimental structure, lattice parameters, and band gap of Cu 2 EuSnSe 4 are consistent with the computational predictions, confirming a 1.55 eV band gap.

Enhancing Properties with Distortion: A Comparative Study of Two Iron Phosphide Fe 2 P Polymorphs

Iron phosphide (Fe 2 P) crystallizes in its own hexagonal crystal structure type (h-Fe 2 P). As found in meteorites, orthorhombic polymorph (o-Fe 2 P) was originally reported as a high-temperature and high-pressure phase. Recently, o-Fe 2 P was described as being stable at ambient pressure, yet no synthetic methods were developed for single-crystal growth or single-phase bulk powder synthesis. Here, we report a successful method for growing o-Fe 2 P single crystals and synthesizing phase-pure polycrystalline samples using tin-flux. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies showed that the phase transition from o-Fe 2 P to h-Fe 2 P occurs at about 873 K, and below that temperature, the formation of the o-Fe 2 P phase is favored thermodynamically rather than kinetically. Systematic comparison of transport, magnetic, and electrocatalytic properties of both h-Fe 2 P and o-Fe 2 P phases showed a substantial impact of the crystal structure on properties. The orthorhombic structural distortion resulted in considerable changes in magnetic properties, with the o-Fe 2 P phase exhibiting a 60% lower Fe magnetic moment and a substantially higher ferromagnetic Curie temperature than h-Fe 2 P. Further, electrochemical measurements toward the hydrogen evolution reaction in acidic media showed that the o-Fe 2 P phase requires an 80 mV lower overpotential than the h-Fe 2 P phase to generate a current density of -10 mA/cm 2 , and their electronic structures suggest that the higher density of states at the Fermi energy is the origin of superior catalytic activity in o-Fe 2 P.

Structural Distortions and Uniaxial Negative Thermal Expansion in the Polar Dion–Jacobson Oxide RbNdTa 2 O 7

We provide deeper insight into the crystal structures, sequential structural phase transitions (I2cm → Cmce → I4/mcm → P4/mmm), thermal expansion, and electronic properties of the n = 2 Dion–Jacobson polar oxide RbNdTa 2 O 7 , through X-ray powder diffraction, neutron powder diffraction, Raman studies, and density functional theory calculations. We observed a uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) across the first-order transition, I2cm → Cmce, where the unit cell contracts along the c-axis, which is driven by a contraction of the NdTa 2 O 6 layer. Here, this NTE occurs within the temperature range of the first-order phase transition and contrasts with the corkscrew mechanism typically observed in Ruddlesden–Popper phases. In RbNdTa 2 O 7 , the I2cm (hybrid improper ferroelectric) → Cmce (antipolar) transition involves crucial changes in the bond lengths of Nd and Ta polyhedra, coupled with polar to antipolar displacement of the Nd ions, leading to a net contraction in the NdTa 2 O 6 layer along the c-axis, while preserving the overall octahedral tilting magnitude. This transition highlights the intricate interplay between the Nd and Ta coordination and the associated TaO 6 distortions. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra analysis further confirms the first-order structural transition and associated NTE, providing evidence for increased bond stiffness across this transition. Additionally, using neutron powder diffraction, we have determined that the transition I4/mcm → P4/mmm occurs at approximately 1150 K. Finally, we have calculated from DFT + U, the partial density of states, the energy bandgaps, and effective masses of the charge carriers of the polar ground structure.

Flux Synthesis of a Metal Carbide Hydride Using Anthracene As a Reactant

In this study, La 15 (FeC 6 ) 4 H was synthesized from the reaction of iron and anthracene in La/Ni eutectic flux. Anthracene was the source of both the carbon and hydrogen in the product. The structure of this metal carbide hydride features hydride ions in tetrahedral interstitial sites surrounded by lanthanum ions, which was confirmed by single-crystal neutron diffraction studies. The trigonal planar FeC 6 units in which the central iron atom is coordinated by three ethylenide groups are similar to those found in La 3.67 FeC 6 , a previously reported compound that is formed in the absence of a hydride source. Magnetic susceptibility data confirm that the iron sites do not have magnetic moments. Density of states calculations indicate that La 15 (FeC 6 ) 4 H is metallic and is stabilized by the incorporation of hydride anions.

Lattice Dynamics and Structural Phase Transitions in Eu 2 O 3

Using the density functional theory, we study the structural and lattice dynamical properties of europium sesquioxide (Eu 2 O 3 ) in the cubic, trigonal, and monoclinic phases. The obtained lattice parameters and energies of the Raman modes show a good agreement with the available experimental data. The Eu-partial phonon density of states calculated for the cubic structure is compared with the nuclear inelastic scattering data obtained from a 20 nm thick Eu 2 O 3 film deposited on a YSZ substrate. A small shift of the experimental spectrum to higher energies results from a compressive strain induced by the substrate. On the basis of lattice and phonon properties, we analyze the mechanisms of structural transitions between different phases of Eu 2 O 3 .

Cubic Crystal Structure Formation and Optical Properties within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) Family of Semiconductors

Quaternary chalcogenide semiconductors are promising materials for energy conversion and nonlinear optical applications, with properties tunable primarily by varying the elemental composition and crystal structure. Here, we first analyze the connections among several cubic crystal structure types, as well as the orthorhombic Ag 2 PbGeS 4 -type structure, reported for select members within the Ag–B II –M IV –X (B II = Sr, Pb; M IV = Si, Ge, Sn; X = S, Se) compositional space. Focusing on the Ag–Pb–Si–S and Ag–Sr–Sn–S systems, we show that one structure type, with the formulas Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , is favored. We have prepared powder and single-crystal samples of Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , showing that each takes on the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group I$\bar{43}$d and is isostructural to the previously reported compound Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 . Through hybrid density functional theory calculations, these cubic compounds are demonstrated to be (quasi-)direct band gap semiconductors with high densities of states at the band maxima. Furthermore, the band-gap energies are measured by reflectance spectroscopy as 1.95(3) and 2.66(4) eV for Ag 2 Pb 3 Si 2 S 8 and Ag 2 Sr 3 Sn 2 S 8 , respectively. We further measure the optical properties and show the electronic band structures of three other isostructural A I –B II –M IV –X-type materials, i.e., Ag 2 Sr 3 Si 2 S 8 , Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 S 8 , and Ag 2 Sr 3 Ge 2 Se 8 , showing that the band gaps can be predictably tuned by element substitution. Detailed visual analyses of the different structures and of their relationships with other members of the Ag–B II –M IV –X compositional family provide a basis for a broader understanding of the structure formation and optoelectronic properties within the quaternary chalcogenide semiconductor family.

Flux Growth of Cerium Nickel Gallides Studied by In Situ Neutron Diffraction

In this work, reactions of cerium and nickel in excess molten gallium were monitored by neutron diffraction during heating and cooling. The formation of binary intermediates CeGa 2 and Ni 2 Ga 3 was observed during heating. During cooling of the molten mixture from 900 °C, precipitation of BaAl 4 -type CeNi 0.74 Ga 3.26 occurred at 850 °C. Upon cooling to 650 °C, this compound reacted in the flux to form Ce 2 NiGa 10 and then Ce 2 NiGa 12 , the latter of which persisted to room temperature. Making use of this information, subsequent reactions were quenched at 750 °C to isolate crystals of CeNi 0.74 Ga 3.26 for further study. Similar reactions replacing Ce with La and quenching above 750 °C yielded LaNi 0.35 Ga 3.65 crystals. Magnetic susceptibility studies on CeNi 0.74 Ga 3.26 indicate that the cerium is trivalent; the Ce 3+ moments undergo a strongly anisotropic ferromagnetic ordering with moment perpendicular to the c axis below 7 K. Heat capacity data show little evidence of heavy fermion behavior. Resistivity measurements show that both LaNi0.35Ga3.65 and CeNi 0.74 Ga 3.26 exhibit metallic behavior. Density of states calculations support this and indicate that Ni/Ga mixing in the compound stabilizes the structure.

Ternary Complexes of BiI 3 /CuI and SbI 3 /CuI with Tetrahydrothiophene

Reactions of BiI 3 /CuI mixtures with tetrahydrothiophene (THT) in toluene produce 2-D sheet networks BiCu 3 I 6 (THT) n (n = 2, 3, or 4), depending on reaction conditions. All three structures are based on BiI 6 octahedra, which share pairs of (μ 2 -I) 2 with Cu 3 (THT) n units. BiCu 3 I 6 (THT) 2 features Cu 2 (μ 2 -I) 2 rhombs with close Cu···Cu interactions and is accompanied by formation of the very complex HBi 3 Cu 12 I 22 (THT) 8 . Reactions of SbI 3 /CuI with THT in toluene produced a SbCu 3 I 6 (THT) 2 network shows Cu 3 (μ 2 -THT) 2 units, like its Bi congener, but Cu 6 (μ 2 -I) 6 barrels rather than rhombs. Isolated SbI 3 units are stacked above the Cu 6 I 6 barrels. A molecular compound, Sb 3 Cu 3 I 12 (THT) 6 consists of a face-sharing Sb 3 I 12 stack, in which the Cu-THT units are bonded in asymmetric fashion about the central SbI 6 . Metal-halide bonds were investigated via QTAIM and NLMO analyses, demonstrating that these bonds are largely ionic and occur between the Bi/Sb and I p orbitals. Hirshfeld analysis shows significant H···H and H···I interactions. Diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) reveals band edges for the Bi species of 1.71–1.82 eV, while those for the neutral Sb complexes are in the range of 1.94–2.06 eV. Mapping of the electronic structure via density of state calculations indicates population of antibonding Bi/Sb–I orbitals in the excited state.

BaCu 4/3 Si 2/3 P 2 and BaCu 2–( x + y ) Zn x Si y P 2 : Expanding the Semiconducting Landscape in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -Type Family

ThCr 2 Si 2 -type layered materials are a large family of compounds with applications ranging from thermoelectricity to magnetism, with the vast majority of the members exhibiting metallic behavior. Here, in this study, we synthesized a new group of materials with Cu-Si and Cu-Zn-Si square nets with the general formula BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 and BaCu 2–(x+y) Zn x Si y P 2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.9; 0.3 ≤ y ≤ 0.7). Several synthesized compounds are charge-balanced semiconductors, which are rare in the ThCr 2 Si 2 family. All the reported compounds crystallize in the ThCr 2 Si 2 -type tetragonal I4/mmm space group, with Cu/Zn/Si jointly occupying the same 4d crystallographic site. In the Zn-free composition, BaCu 1.33 Si 0.67 P 2 , Ba, and P each occupy a single crystallographic site. The introduction of Zn results in the expansion of the unit cell and splitting the Ba atomic sites along the [001] direction. Such structural displacement of the Ba atoms was confirmed by the heat capacity measurements. Band structure and density-of-states calculations on ordered hypothetical structural models reveal either a small bandgap (∼0.2 eV) or semimetallic band structures. The compounds reported here exhibit high Seebeck coefficients and ultralow thermal conductivity, making them promising candidates for the development of thermoelectric materials.

CoSn-type NiIn1–xSbx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.17): Site-Selective Substitution, Electronic Structure, Chemical Bonding, and Structural Transformation

CoSn-type intermetallic compounds have emerged as a model platform for Kagome-derived flat-band physics, where subtle chemical perturbations can strongly influence electronic structure and phase stability. Here, we present a combined experimental and theoretical study of Sb-substitution in CoSn-type NiIn1–xSbx (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.17) to elucidate the interplay between site selectivity, solubility limit, chemical bonding, and electronic structure. Rietveld refinements on Neutron powder diffraction data confirmed the selective Sb-substitution at the electron-rich In2 (2d) site forming the honeycomb substructure, while the In1 (1a) site within the Kagome layer remains exclusively occupied by In. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that pristine CoSn-type NiIn hosts Ni 3d-dominated flat bands near the Fermi level (EF), originating from the Kagome-like Ni substructure. Partial replacement of In by Sb within the honeycomb layer alters these flat-band features below EF, reducing the density of states and suppressing the flat-band topology near the Fermi level. Orbital-resolved electronic structure and chemical-bonding analyses show that Sb-substitution enhances Ni-p-block (In/Sb) covalency and optimizes charge compensation, stabilizing the CoSn-type structure up to the solubility limit x ≈ 0.17. Beyond the limit, the higher-Sb compositions show satellite reflections consistent with an incommensurately modulated phase. These results establish a link between site-selective chemical substitution, bonding optimization, and flat-band electronic structure evolution, providing fundamental insights into how chemical substitution influences the electronic properties of Kagome-based intermetallic compounds.

Persistent Protein Motions in a Rugged Energy Landscape Revealed by Normal Mode Ensemble Analysis

Proteins are allosteric machines that couple motions at distinct, often distant, sites to control biological function. Low-frequency structural vibrations are a mechanism of this long-distance connection and are often used computationally to predict correlations, but experimentally identifying the vibrations associated with specific motions has proved challenging. Spectroscopy is an ideal tool to explore these excitations, but measurements have been largely unable to identify important frequency bands. The result is at odds with some previous calculations and raises the question what methods could successfully characterize protein structural vibrations. Here we show the lack of spectral structure arises in part from the variations in protein structure as the protein samples the energy landscape. However, by averaging over the energy landscape as sampled using an aggregate 18.5 μs of all-atom molecular dynamics simulation of hen egg white lysozyme and normal-mode analyses, we find vibrations with large overlap with functional displacements are surprisingly concentrated in narrow frequency bands. These bands are not apparent in either the ensemble averaged vibrational density of states or isotropic absorption. However, in the case of the ensemble averaged anisotropic absorption, there is persistent spectral structure and overlap between this structure and the functional displacement frequency bands. We systematically lay out heuristics for calculating the spectra robustly, including the need for statistical sampling of the protein and inclusion of adequate water in the spectral calculation. The results show the congested spectrum of these complex molecules obscures important frequency bands associated with function and reveal a method to overcome this congestion by combining structurally sensitive spectroscopy with robust normal mode ensemble analysis.

Reconciling Work Functions and Adsorption Enthalpies for Implicit Solvent Models: A Pt (111)/Water Interface Case Study

Implicit solvent models are a computationally efficient method of representing solid/liquid interfaces prevalent in electrocatalysis, energy storage, and materials science. However, electronic structure changes induced at the metallic surface by the dielectric continuum are not fully understood. To address this, we perform DFT calculations for the Pt(111)/water interface, in order to compare Poisson–Boltzmann continuum solvation methods with ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of explicit solvent. We show that the implicit solvent cavity can be parametrized in terms of the electric dipole moment change at the equilibrated explicit Pt/water interface to obtain the potential of zero charge (PZC). We also compare the accuracy of aqueous enthalpies of adsorption of phenol on Pt(111) using geometry and charge density based dielectric cavitation methods. The ability to parametrize the cavity according to individual atoms, as afforded in the geometry based approach, is key to obtaining accurate enthalpy changes of adsorption under aqueous conditions. Additionally, we show that the electronic structure changes induced by explicit solvent and our proposed implicit solvent parametrization scheme yield comparable density difference profiles and d-band projected density of states. We therefore demonstrate the capability of implicit solvent approaches to capture both the energetics of adsorption processes and the main electronic effects of aqueous solvent on the metallic surface. Therefore, this work provides a scheme for computationally efficient simulations of interfacial processes for applications in areas such as heterogeneous catalysis and electrochemistry.

Molecular Dynamics Driven by the Many-Body Expansion (MBE-MD)

Here, we present a protocol for classical and nuclear quantum dynamics, in which the energies and forces are generated by the many-body expansion (MBE), and apply it to water clusters using the TTM2.1-F and MB-Pol interaction potentials at various temperatures. We carry out MBE-MD classical and nuclear quantum dynamical simulations in which the energies and forces of the full system are approximated by the 2-, 3-, and 4-body terms of the MBE expansion and compare the average potential and the vibrational density of states (VDOS) with the full simulation, i.e., the one for which no MBE is used. Our results indicate that the thermally averaged potential energy from the MBE up to the 4-body term converges with near identical behavior to the one from the full simulation. The 3-body makes a substantial contribution (~20%) to the energy, whereas the 4- body is necessary for obtaining quantitatively accurate energetics and forces, albeit making a small contribution to each (~2%). We further show that the harmonic frequencies are reproduced to within a few wavenumbers (cm -1 ) at the 4-body level, and that the slowest modes to converge with the MBE rank are those involving the strongest hydrogen bonds. Anharmonicity exacerbates this effect, so that a 4-body description of the energies and forces is needed to achieve accurate anharmonic vibrational frequencies in the hydrogen-bonded OH-stretching region. We also discuss the asymptotic scaling of the MBE-MD protocol with respect to the cost of the underlying potential energy evaluation, suggesting that electronic structure methods that scale at least as N 4 ,N being the size of the system, are needed to result in savings over the traditional full MD simulation. We anticipate that MBE-MD protocol can evolve into a powerful and practical method, which will allow for highly accurate ab initio MD simulations on a much broader range of molecular systems than can be currently handled.
