A unified analysis and design procedure for a standardized control module for dc-dc switching regulators

Three basic switching regulators: buck, boost, and buck/boost, employing a multi-loop control module (SCM) were characterized by a common small signal block diagram. Employing the unified model, regulator performances such as stability, audiosusceptibility, output impedance and step load transient are analyzed and key performance indexes are expressed in simple analytical forms. More importantly, the performance characteristics of all three regulators are shown to enjoy common properties due to the unique SCM control scheme which nullifies the positive zero and provides adaptive compensation to the moving poles of the boost and buck/boost converters. This allows a simple unified design procedure to be devised for selecting the key SCM control parameters for an arbitrarily given power stage configuration and parameter values, such that all regulator performance specifications can be met and optimized concurrently in a single design attempt.

Automatic thermal switch

An automatic thermal switch to control heat flow includes a first thermally conductive plate, a second thermally conductive plate and a thermal transfer plate pivotally mounted between the first and second plates. A phase change power unit, including a plunger connected to the transfer plate, is in thermal contact with the first thermally conductive plate. A biasing element, connected to the transfer plate, biases the transfer plate in a predetermined position with respect to the first and second plates. When the phase change power unit is actuated by an increase in heat transmitted through the first plate, the plunger extends and pivots the transfer plate to vary the thermal conduction between the first and second plates through the transfer plate. The biasing element, transfer plate and piston can be arranged to provide either a normally closed or normally open thermally conductive path between the first and second plates.

High power solar array switching regulation

It is pointed out that spacecraft utilization projections for the 1980s and beyond show a trend toward extended lifetimes and larger electric power systems. The need for improved power management and energy transfer arising in connection with this trend has resulted in the conduction of a Solar Array Switching Power Management study. A description is presented of initial development work performed in the study, taking into account the characteristics for three mission classes. Attention is given to the manned LEO platform (250-kW average load), the unmanned GEO platform (50-kW average load), and an ion propulsion orbit transfer vehicle (50- to 250 kW load).

Satellite switched FDMA advanced communication technology satellite program

The satellite switched frequency division multiple access system provided a detailed system architecture that supports a point to point communication system for long haul voice, video and data traffic between small Earth terminals at Ka band frequencies at 30/20 GHz. A detailed system design is presented for the space segment, small terminal/trunking segment at network control segment for domestic traffic model A or B, each totaling 3.8 Gb/s of small terminal traffic and 6.2 Gb/s trunk traffic. The small terminal traffic (3.8 Gb/s) is emphasized, for the satellite router portion of the system design, which is a composite of thousands of Earth stations with digital traffic ranging from a single 32 Kb/s CVSD voice channel to thousands of channels containing voice, video and data with a data rate as high as 33 Mb/s. The system design concept presented, effectively optimizes a unique frequency and channelization plan for both traffic models A and B with minimum reorganization of the satellite payload transponder subsystem hardware design. The unique zoning concept allows multiple beam antennas while maximizing multiple carrier frequency reuse. Detailed hardware design estimates for an FDMA router (part of the satellite transponder subsystem) indicate a weight and dc power budget of 353 lbs, 195 watts for traffic model A and 498 lbs, 244 watts for traffic model B.

An improved switching converter model using discrete and average techniques

The nonlinear modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters has been done by averaging and discrete-sampling techniques. The averaging technique is simple, but inaccurate as the modulation frequencies approach the theoretical limit of one-half the switching frequency. The discrete technique is accurate even at high frequencies, but is very complex and cumbersome. An improved model is developed by combining the aforementioned techniques. This new model is easy to implement in circuit and state variable forms and is accurate to the theoretical limit.

The electronic switching spherical array antenna for the Earth Radiation Budget Spacecraft

The ESSA is a microprocessor-controlled antenna for low orbiting spacecraft for telemetry and command relay through the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The array is a hemispherical shape covered with disk radiating elements. A group of radiating elements are continuously selected by the microprocessor controller to form a beam in the direction of a TDRS. A radial switching power divider uses PIN diodes to select the desired radiating elements. The antenna gain is a function of the size of the hemispherical dome. A 30-inch diameter dome is presently being built for the Earth Radiation Budget Spacecraft (ERBS). Gain of this antenna over a hemisphere is 14 dBi and polarization is lefthand circular. There are 145 radiating elements with 12 being used at one time to form a beam. The ESSA subsystem weights 74 pounds and power consumption is 20 watts. RF power handling capability is 30 watts. The S-Band radiating elements have a 10 percent bandwidth that allows simultaneous transmission and reception.

Ultranarrow linewidth, magnetically switched, long pulse, xenon chloride laser

A spectral linewidth of less than 70 fm and diffraction-limited beam divergence have been obtained from a long-pulse, electric-discharge xenon chloride laser with intracavity Fabry-Perot etalons. A gain duration of 100 ns provided for multipass operation of the etalons, significantly improving both contrast and finesse. The electrical-discharge circuit required to produce this long gain duration was comprised of a pulse-forming network, a saturable-inductor magnetic switch, and a tapered constant-impedance interface transmission line.
