Switching circuits with fast response and low power drain

New logic circuits have response times no longer than 10 nanoseconds and drain only milliwatts of power. The family includes AND and NAND gates and forms the basis of all logic functions. The basic circuits are used in various types of digital-data-processing systems.

Digital decoder for phase-delay coded data

Coded or modulated digital data converts to nonreturn to zero /NRZ/ data. Technique includes logic implementation and pertinent timing diagrams. Demodulation to NRZ facilitates digital logic operations on incoming data. Phase-delay modulation has advantage of inherent self-timing not present in NRZ modulation.

Analytical design of a parasitic-loading digital speed controller for a 400-hertz turbine driven alternator

A design for a solid-state parasitic speed controller using digital logic was analyzed. Parasitic speed controllers are used in space power electrical generating systems to control the speed of turbine-driven alternators within specified limits. The analysis included the performance characteristics of the speed controller and the generation of timing functions. The speed controller using digital logic applies step loads to the alternator. The step loads conduct for a full half wave starting at either zero or 180 electrical degrees.

Investigation of an automatic spin prevention system for fighter airplanes

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of an automatic spin-prevention system for current fighter airplanes as a first step in determining the feasibility of such a system. The concept makes use of the components of the conventional flight-control system with the addition of control logic to monitor angle of attack, yaw rate, and normal acceleration. Analytical techniques were used to study the system concept applied to three representative fighter configurations, and model flight tests were employed to evaluate a prototype system on a representative fighter configuration. Emphasis was placed on the development of the control logic required. A discussion of possible implementations of the system concept is presented. Results of the investigation indicated that a relatively simple system (with full control authority) was effective in preventing the developed spins of the fighter configurations considered and that the system design is dependent on the stall and spin characteristics of the particular airplane.

Methodology for the systems engineering process. Volume 2: Technical parameters

A scheme based on starting the logic networks from the development and mission factors that are of primary concern in an aerospace system is described. This approach required identifying the primary states (design, design verification, premission, mission, postmission), identifying the attributes within each state (performance capability, survival, evaluation, operation, etc), and then developing the generic relationships of variables for each branch. To illustrate this concept, a system was used that involved a launch vehicle and payload for an earth orbit mission. Examination showed that this example was sufficient to illustrate the concept. A more complicated mission would follow the same basic approach, but would have more extensive sets of generic trees and more correlation points between branches. It has been shown that in each system state (production, test, and use), a logic could be developed to order and classify the parameters involved in the translation from general requirements to specific requirements for system elements.

A description of the thruster attitude control simulation and its application to the HEAO-C study

During the design and evaluation of a reaction control system (RCS), it is desirable to have a digital computer program simulating vehicle dynamics, disturbance torques, control torques, and RCS logic. The thruster attitude control simulation (TACS) is just such a computer program. The TACS is a relatively sophisticated digital computer program that includes all the major parameters involved in the attitude control of a vehicle using an RCS for control. It includes the effects of gravity gradient torques and HEAO-C aerodynamic torques so that realistic runs can be made in the areas of fuel consumption and engine actuation rates. Also, the program is general enough that any engine configuration and logic scheme can be implemented in a reasonable amount of time. The results of the application of the TACS in the HEAO-C study are included.

A method for attitude control of a satellite in circular orbit by actively varying its inertia.

Equations are developed for a vehicle consisting of a system of particles which move in a generally prescribed fashion. These equations are then specialized to apply to a rigid vehicle with a constant amount of fluid contained in tanks and flowing through interconnecting lines. Various simplifications and specialized forms of the equations are derived, and relationships between mass and inertia that result from the fluid transfer logic and the physical constraints of the configuration are formulated. A tank arrangement and fluid transfer logic are devised which permit each vehicle product of inertia to be varied without varying the remaining elements of the inertia matrix or shifting the center of mass. Vehicle control is achieved by sensing angular rate and the local vertical and by transferring fluid as a function of these variables.

Design and flight experience with a digital fly-by-wire control system using Apollo guidance system hardware on an F-8 aircraft.

This paper discusses the design and initial flight tests of the first digital fly-by-wire system to be flown in an aircraft. The system, which used components from the Apollo guidance system, was installed in an F-8 aircraft. A lunar module guidance computer is the central element in the three-axis, single-channel, multimode, digital, primary control system. An electrohydraulic triplex system providing unaugmented control of the F-8 aircraft is the only backup to the digital system. Emphasis is placed on the digital system in its role as a control augmentor, a logic processor, and a failure detector. A sampled-data design synthesis example is included to demonstrate the role of various analytical and simulation methods. The use of a digital system to implement conventional control laws was shown to be practical for flight. Logic functions coded as an integral part of the control laws were found to be advantageous. Verification of software required an extensive effort, but confidence in the software was achieved. Initial flight results showed highly successful system operation, although quantization of pilot's stick and trim were areas of minor concern from the piloting standpoint.

Performance evaluation of a class of systematic, rate (M-1)/M, convolutional codes

The implementation and performance evaluation are described for a class of rate (M-1)/M, systematic, convolutional codes being decoded with a simple majority logic decoder. The encoding logic appends one parity bit for each PCM telemetry word. It is shown that over the critical range of received PCM telemetry signal-to-noise ratios, this coding procedure produces a net coding gain of from 1.5 to 2.5 db relative to an equal power transmission of uncoded PCM telemetry. Being a low-redundancy systematic code, it is possible to process this data without convolutional decoding with a small rate loss penalty of about 0.5 db.

Space shuttle atmospheric revitalization subsystem/active thermal control subsystem computer program (users manual)

A shuttle (ARS) atmosphere revitalization subsystem active thermal control subsystem (ATCS) performance routine was developed. This computer program is adapted from the Shuttle EC/LSS Design Computer Program. The program was upgraded in three noteworthy areas: (1) The functional ARS/ATCS schematic has been revised to accurately synthesize the shuttle baseline system definition. (2) The program logic has been improved to provide a more accurate prediction of the integrated ARS/ATCS system performance. Additionally, the logic has been expanded to model all components and thermal loads in the ARS/ATCS system. (3) The program is designed to be used on the NASA JSC crew system division's programmable calculator system. As written the new computer routine has an average running time of five minutes. The use of desk top type calculation equipment, and the rapid response of the program provides the NASA with an analytical tool for trade studies to refine the system definition, and for test support of the RSECS or integrated Shuttle ARS/ATCS test programs.
