Verification of interim simulated atmospheric turbulence

During horizontal and near-horizontal flight of the space shuttle orbiter, the effects of atmospheric turbulence on the vehicle are crucial in establishing the space shuttle design, control, and human pilot effects. The effects of both turbulent gusts and gust gradients (shears) must be taken into account. By means of a nonrecursive turbulence simulation model, twelve simulated turbulence time series for gusts and gust gradients were generated as part of a previous investigation. The current investigation was concerned with the spectral analysis of the time series based on the use of Fourier transform theory. A comparison between the computed spectra and the corresponding von Karman theoretical spectra is also included. A basic difference is explained between the computed and theoretical spectra which was identified as a result of the comparison. Conclusions and recommendations are presented.

Lear jet boundary layer/shear layer laser propagation experiments

Optical degradations of aircraft turbulent boundary layers with shear layers generated by aerodynamic fences are analyzed. A collimated 2.5 cm diameter helium-neon laser (0.63 microns) traversed the approximate 5 cm thick natural aircraft boundary layer in double pass via a reflective airfoil. In addition, several flights examined shear layer-induced optical degradation. Flight altitudes ranged from 1.5 to 12 km, while Mach numbers were varied from 0.3 to 0.8. Average line spread function (LSF) and Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) data were obtained by averaging a large number of tilt-removed curves. Fourier transforming the resulting average MTF yields an LSF, thus affording a direct comparison of the two optical measurements. Agreement was good for the aerodynamic fence arrangement, but only fair in the case of a turbulent boundary layer. Values of phase variance inferred from the LSF instrument for a single pass through the random flow and corrected for a large aperture ranged from 0.08 to 0.11 waves (lambda = .63 microns) for the boundary layer. Corresponding values for the fence vary from 0.08 to 0.16 waves. Extrapolation of these values to 10.6 microns suggests negligible degradation for a CO2 laser transmitted through a 5 cm thick, subsonic turbulent boundary layer.

Cycle II.5 aircraft aero-optical turbulent boundary-layer/shear-layer measurements

The aero-optical effects associated with propagating a laser beam through aircraft turbulent boundary layers and shear layers were examined. Observed laser optical performance levels were compared with those inferred from aerodynamic measurements of unsteady densities and correlation lengths within these random flows. Optical instrumentation included a fast shearing interferometer (FSI). A 9 cm diameter collimated helium neon laser beam made a double pass through the aircraft random flow via an airfoil mirror located one meter from the fuselage. Typical aircraft turbulent boundary layer thickness measured 0.3 meters. Averaging many FSI generated modulation transfer functions (MTFs) and Fourier transforming, this average yields the expected far field intensity degradation associated with an aircraft mounted laser system. Aerodynamic instrumentation included fine wire probes to measure unsteady temperature and mass flux. A laser doppler velocimeter measured unsteady velocity within the flows. An analysis of these data yielded point measurements of unsteady density and correlation length.

Scannable beam forming interferometer antenna array system

An antenna array is described which comprises three interferometer pairs of antenna elements with selected spacings made to form a single beam which is readily scannable. All spatial frequencies generated by a signal and intercepted by the array are derived from a signal processing technique applied to the array. The array samples space in the spatial frequency domain while the signal processing technique utilizes real time convolution of functions in the spectral frequency domain. Summation of the appropriate spatial frequencies is equilvalent to a Fourier transform operation, yielding the location of the signal source in space. Resolution and freedom from interference of the interferometer system is equal to that of a fully filled array of the same aperture size containing element spacings of one half wavelength. An antenna array system comprising four antenna elements forming six interferometer pairs with a resolution equal to that of a sixteen element array with spacings of one half wavelength is described, as well as other multiples of one quarter wavelength of partial multiples of a wave length.

Concerning the feasibility of a real time SAR digital processor for VOIR low resolution imaging modes

The feasibility of real time digital processing of synthetic aperture radar data for Venus orbiting imaging radar low resolution modes was investigated. First, it is shown that range migration is not a problem for these modes. Then, under the assumption of no range migration, fast Fourier transform implementations for accomplishing both range and azimuth correlation in real time are shown to be feasible with current technology.

A study of the transmission characteristics of suppressor nozzles

The internal noise radiation characteristics for a single stream 12 lobe 24 tube suppressor nozzle, and for a dual stream 36 chute suppressor nozzle were investigated. An equivalent single round conical nozzle and an equivalent coannular nozzle system were also tested to provide a reference for the two suppressors. The technique utilized a high voltage spark discharge as a noise source within the test duct which permitted separation of the incident, reflected and transmitted signals in the time domain. These signals were then Fourier transformed to obtain the nozzle transmission coefficient and the power transfer function. These transmission parameters for the 12 lobe, 24 tube suppressor nozzle and the reference conical nozzle are presented as a function of jet Mach number, duct Mach number polar angle and temperature. Effects of simulated forward flight are also considered for this nozzle. For the dual stream, 36 chute suppressor, the transmission parameters are presented as a function of velocity ratios and temperature ratios. Possible data for the equivalent coaxial nozzle is also presented. Jet noise suppression by these nozzles is also discussed.

Dynamic modal estimation using instrumental variables

A method to determine the modes of dynamical systems is described. The inputs and outputs of a system are Fourier transformed and averaged to reduce the error level. An instrumental variable method that estimates modal parameters from multiple correlations between responses of single input, multiple output systems is applied to estimate aircraft, spacecraft, and off-shore platform modal parameters.

O2/1 Delta/ emission in the day and night airglow of Venus

An intense airglow from O2(1 Delta) at 1.27 microns on both the light and the dark sides of Venus has been detected by using a ground-based high-resolution Fourier-transform spectrometer. Both dayglow and nightglow are roughly 1,000 times brighter than the visible O2 nightglow found by Veneras 9 and 10 in 1975. The column emission rate of O2(1 Delta) from Venus is close to the rate at which fresh O atoms are produced from photolysis of CO2 on the day side. Formation of O2(1 Delta) is thus a major step in the removal of O atoms from the atmosphere, and dynamical processes must carry these atoms to the night side fast enough to yield a maximum density near 90 km, which is almost constant over the planet.

Measurement of vortex frequencies in a lean, premixed prevaporized combustor

A modified laser schlieren and fast Fourier transform analysis system has been developed and applied to the study of vortex frequencies in a lean, premixed prevaporized combustor. The system is sensitive to the passage of vortex structures which dominate the flow in the combustor studied. The frequency spectra of the passage of vortices show distinct frequency peaks which are postulated to be characteristic of the processes triggering the vortex shedding. The method provides additional information which should aid in the characterization and understanding of shear flows.

Transient unbalance response of four multilobe journal bearings

This work carries out an analysis of the transient response of four multilobe journal bearings (elliptical, offset, three-lobe, and four-lobe) subject to unbalance both below and above the linearized stability thresholds for the bearings. It extends the work of a previous paper on a balanced rotor in the same four bearing types. Transient orbits, bearing forces, and a numerical fast Fourier transform analysis of the orbits are presented. A comparison of bearing forces above the stability threshold for each bearing indicates that the elliptical bearing has the most violent whirl vibration amplitudes, while the offset bearing exhibits the least amount of subsynchronous vibration.

A new atlas of infrared methane spectra between 1120 per cm and 1800 per cm

An atlas of 1339 methane absorption lines in the range 1120 to 1800 reciprocal centimeters, including the nu(4) and nu(2) bands, is presented. Laboratory spectra were obtained by a Nicolet Fourier transform Michelson interferometer with a resolution of approximately 0.06 reciprocal cm and a path length of 6.35 m of 0.98, 4.86 and 19.97 torr. Observed spectra are also compared with spectral intensities calculated line-by-line on the basis of tabulated intensities of the observed spectral lines.

Local atomic and electronic structure of oxide/GaAs and SiO2/Si interfaces using high-resolution XPS

The chemical structures of thin SiO2 films, thin native oxides of GaAs (20-30 A), and the respective oxide-semiconductor interfaces, have been investigated using high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Depth profiles of these structures have been obtained using argon ion bombardment and wet chemical etching techniques. The chemical destruction induced by the ion profiling method is shown by direct comparison of these methods for identical samples. Fourier transform data-reduction methods based on linear prediction with maximum entropy constraints are used to analyze the discrete structure in oxides and substrates. This discrete structure is interpreted by means of a structure-induced charge-transfer model.

Spectrophotometry of Comet West

Postperihelion observations of Comet West (1975n = 1976 VI) have been made with a Fourier transform spectrometer at heliocentric distances from 0.57 to 1.68 AU. Measurements were made of the emission bands of C2, CN, C3, CH, and NH2, as well as the emission lines of Na D and forbidden (O I), and the flux in the continuum in nine different bandpasses. Several ratios of the band strengths of CN have been used to determine the two free parameters in the fluorescence equilibrium model of CN of Danks and Arpigny (1973). From the values of the parameters it is inferred that the vibrational transition probability for the ground electronic state is between 0.025 and 0.075 per sec and that the ratio of oscillator strengths between the (0-0) bands of the violet and red systems is between 25 and 30. When corrected for field-of-view effects, NH2 shows no systematic variation in abundance relative to C2 while CH shows a small increase. The cometary continuum is found to be slightly redder than the solar continuum, consistent with results for other bright, dusty comets. The equivalent width of the Delta u = 0 sequence of C2 shows a marked decrease at r(H) = 1.2 AU.

The suitability of the ILLIAC IV architecture for image processing

The major architectural features of the ILLIAC IV large scale, array processor are summarized along with their applicability to image processing. Several image processing algorithms are considered, including multispectral classification, texture feature extraction, two-dimensional Fourier transform, and synthetic aperture radar processing. The basic parallelism of the ILLIAC IV (64 processing elements acting in lock-step) is usually fully utilized by the image processing applications. The major architectural aspect of the system with respect to image processing is the relatively small local scratch-pad memory and the long latency time to access the main storage device. The major precision used for the image processing applications is the 32-bit floating point, given a choice of 8-bit integers and 64-bit floating point.

Optical redshifts of 59 galaxies

This paper presents the results of an observing program carried out to measure galaxy redshifts with the Cassegrain Digicon Spectrograph system on the McDonald Observatory 2.1 m Struve telescope. New redshift determinations are presented for 59 galaxies, obtained for emission line spectra by conventional wavelength determination techniques and for absorption line spectra by Fourier transform filtering and cross correlation techniques with respect to velocity standard spectra of NGC 3115 and NGC 4736. With respect to published redshifts for 29 galaxies, the new redshifts show a mean residual of -1 km/sec and rms residual of 49 km/sec, without apparent systematic trends, from -300 to +13,700 km/sec.

Dynamic response of damaged angleplied fiber composites

An investigation was conducted to determine the effects of low level damage induced by monotonic load, cyclic load and/or residual stresses on the vibration frequencies and damping factors of fiber composite angleplied laminates. Two different composite systems were studied - low modulus fiber and ultra high modulus fiber composites. The results obtained showed that the frequencies and damping factors of angleplied laminates made from low modulus fiber composites are sensitive to low level damage while those made from ultra high modulus composites are not. Also, vibration tests may not be sufficiently sensitive to assess concentrated local damage in angleplied laminates. And furthermore, dynamic response determined from low-velocity impact coupled with the Fast Fourier Transform and packaged in a minicomputer can be a convenient procedure for assessing low-level damage in fiber composite angleplied laminates.
