Scoping Study: Scintillator Array for Fission Correlation Studies

This scoping study uses a simulation based on the PROSPECT (1) detector to assess the conceptual design of a modular system that could efficiently and simultaneously measure the Prompt Fast Neutron Spectrum (PFNS), the prompt fission neutron multiplicity, the prompt fission gamma-ray multiplicity and total energy, as well as temporal and angular correlations between the detected particles. The proposed experiment would require a mono-energetic pulsed neutron beam incident on an actinide target in the center of the detector. Beam induced backgrounds due to elastic and inelastic neutron scattering on the target are considered, while other backgrounds are ignored for this study.

MARVEL Technical Overview: Breakdown of cost and scope growth through 90% Final Design

This report presents a breakdown of cost and scope growth for the Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) project through the design phase, and includes observations, lessons learned, and the results from an independent project assessment. It presents the status and history of the project. Technology maturity is considered in high-level, qualitative comparison to other microreactor design efforts. Its purpose is to record MARVEL’s evolution and lessons learned from the planning and design phases through completion of 90% final design. Analyses included a detailed review of project cost, schedule, and periodic project reports and management documents. The Primary Coolant Apparatus Test (PCAT) is specifically highlighted. It was concluded that MARVEL would have benefited from more extensive planning early in the project to better define cost and schedule to provide more certainty in the total project cost and delivery date. Modest cost and schedule improvements may have been possible, but compared qualitatively, MARVEL’s total cost and schedule performance are consistent with that of other efforts currently underway. Better planning would have provided more certainty, improved risk mitigations, and potentially eliminated delays due to funding shortfalls. A recommended path forward is presented that addresses recommendations in the independent project assessment.

ASIC Scoping Study Final Report

This report documents the results and findings of a one-year scoping study investigating multichannel readout application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) for interfacing to, and processing data from, silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays. We document ASIC desired and required specifications for four applications supporting national security mission areas: neutron radiography, associated particle imaging, and two versions of kinematic neutron imaging cameras. While each application has a few unique requirements that stress capability, there is generally good agreement among most. Two recently developed ASIC devices were evaluated in a system-like configuration by interfacing these to scintillator crystals exposed to gamma and neutron sources. The 64-channel ORNL device delivered functional capability while meeting most mission requirements for neutron radiography. The Nalu Scientific device, a 32-channel full waveform digitizer, did not demonstrate reliable neutron / gamma separation but it is unclear if this was an ASIC issue or problems with test setup or firmware. A literature survey of other commercial and academic ASICs was undertaken to with the conclusion that existing devices do not meet all requirements.

Enzyme Engineering for Expanded Product Scope (CRADA Final Report)

As part of the Cyclotron Road program, Aralez Inc. investigated methods for producing chemicals sustainably, with a particular focus on engineering enzymes to make novel chemical products or accept new substrates that aren’t found in nature. We used directed evolution and other protein engineering techniques to create enzymes that perform abiological chemistry or make chemical products through a non-natural synthetic route. This work was an important step towards increasing the scope of compounds that can be manufactured in a sustainable fashion, which in turn will alleviate the high energy consumption, costly emissions, and waste that are hallmarks of current methods in chemical manufacturing.

Field Scoping Study of Gamma-Ray Measurement of UF 6 Cristillini Samples with CZT and HPGe Detectors

A field scoping study was conducted to evaluate the ability of Cd-Zn-Te (CZT) detectors and High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors to quantify the U-235 enrichment in UF 6 samples collected on alumina in P-10 tubes, similar to the Cristillini method of sample collection for analysis by mass spectrometry. With in-field gamma-ray spectroscopy methods, international safeguards and verification missions could benefit from quick in-field confirmation of declared enrichment values prior to or without the need for additional shipping, sample preparation and analysis. Samples of depleted (DU), low-enriched (LEU) and high-assay low-enriched (HALEU) uranium were collected on Cristillini-type alumina in P-10 tubes and measured with two H3D, Inc. M400 CZT detectors as well as a Canberra Falcon HPGe detector. The M400 detectors were able to confirm enrichment in the DU and LEU samples but not the HALEU sample in measurements 8-40 hrs after collection. The Falcon system was able to confirm enrichment in all three samples. Improvements in detector geometry, increase in number of detectors as well as increase sample mass loading may allow measurement of U-235 enrichment in these types of samples within 4-8hrs of collection with 5-10% uncertainty.

A scoping review of zoonotic parasites and pathogens associated with abattoirs in Eastern Africa and recommendations for abattoirs as disease surveillance sites

Abattoirs are facilities where livestock are slaughtered and are an important aspect in the food production chain. There are several types of abattoirs, which differ in infrastructure and facilities, sanitation and PPE practices, and adherence to regulations. In each abattoir facility, worker exposure to animals and animal products increases their risk of infection from zoonotic pathogens. Backyard abattoirs and slaughter slabs have the highest risk of pathogen transmission because of substandard hygiene practices and minimal infrastructure. These abattoir conditions can often contribute to environmental contamination and may play a significant role in disease outbreaks within communities. To assess further the risk of disease, we conducted a scoping review of parasites and pathogens among livestock and human workers in abattoirs across 13 Eastern African countries, which are hotspots for zoonoses. Our search results (n = 104 articles) showed the presence of bacteria, viruses, fungi, and macroparasites (nematodes, cestodes, etc.) in cattle, goats, sheep, pigs, camels, and poultry. Most articles reported results from cattle, and the most frequent pathogen detected was Mycobacterium bovis, which causes bovine tuberculosis. Some articles included worker survey and questionnaires that suggested how the use of PPE along with proper worker training and safe animal handling practices could reduce disease risk. Based on these findings, we discuss ways to improve abattoir biosafety and increase biosurveillance for disease control and mitigation. Abattoirs are a ‘catch all’ for pathogens, and by surveying animals at abattoirs, health officials can determine which diseases are prevalent in different regions and which pathogens are most likely transmitted from wildlife to livestock. We suggest a regional approach to biosurveillance, which will improve testing and data gathering for enhanced disease risk mapping and forecasting. Next generation sequencing will be key in identifying a wide range of pathogens, rather than a targeted approach.

Understanding Air Quality Changes after Implementation of Mitigation Measures during a Pandemic: A Scoping Review of Literature in the United States

Traffic-related emissions continue to be a significant source of air pollution in the United States (US) and around the globe. Evidence has shown that previous policies implemented to restrict-traffic flows have affected air pollution levels. Thus, mitigation strategies associated with the COVID-19 pandemic that modified population-level mobility patterns provide a unique opportunity to study air pollution change across the US. For instance, to slow the spread of the pandemic, state and local governments started implementing various mitigation actions, including stay-at-home directives, social distancing measures, school closures, and travel restrictions. This scoping review aimed to summarize the existing evidence about how air quality changed through mitigation practices throughout the pandemic in the US. We found 66 articles that fit our inclusion criteria. Generally, the consolidated results revealed that nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and carbon monoxide (CO) decreased across the country. Studies observed mixed directions and magnitudes of change for fine and coarse particulate matter (PM 2.5 , PM 10 ), ozone (O 3 ), and sulfur dioxide (SO2). Few articles tried to explain this notable heterogeneity in air quality changes by associating contextual factors, such as mobility, traffic flow, and demographic factors. However, all studies agreed that the change in air pollution was nonuniform across the US and even varied within a city.

Mission Options Scoping Tool for Mars Orbiters: Mass Cost Calculator (MC2)

Prior to developing the details of an advanced mission study, the mission architecture trade space is typically explored to assess the scope of feasible options. This paper describes the main features of an Excel-based tool, called the Mass-Cost-Calculator (MC2 ), which is used to perform rapid, high-level mass and cost options analyses of Mars orbiter missions. MC2 consists of a combination of databases, analytical solutions, and parametric relationships to enable quick evaluation of new mission concepts and comparison of multiple architecture options. The tool's outputs provide program management and planning teams with answers to "what if" queries, as well as an understanding of the driving mission elements, during the pre-project planning phase. These outputs have been validated against the outputs generated by the Advanced Projects Design Team (Team X) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The architecture of the tool allows for future expansion to other orbiters beyond Mars, and to non-orbiter missions, such as those involving fly-by spacecraft, probes, landers, rovers, or other mission elements.
