The Deimos Experiment: Advanced Reactor Testbed

Advanced reactor initiatives are growing significantly through programs nationwide. This research area includes small modular reactors, microreactors, and space reactors. Many of the reactors being designed are untested concepts. They include unique moderators, varying fuel types, high temperatures, and compact configurations. The shift in fuel type, from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to high assay, low enriched uranium (HALEU), is particularly important as it has driven many of the other changes. For example, lower enrichment requires advanced moderators, which in turn require different reflectors to make the systems compact. The change in materials including the transition from HEU to HALEU affects the temperature feedback of the systems. Additionally, these advanced reactor concepts generally have a thermal neutron spectrum in contrast to earlier fast spectrum advanced reactor. With the extensive changes from previous reactor designs, validation experiments are needed. The National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) is uniquely equipped to perform such experiments. The Deimos experiment, designed for execution at NCERC, will serve as a testbed for advanced reactor concepts. It will use HALEU fuel in a graphite matrix, provide the ability to use advanced moderators, and allow measurements of temperature reactivity coefficients (TRCs).

Engineering in 5 “Deimos, an Advanced Reactor Criticality Experiment” [Slides]

Problem: Advanced nuclear reactors come in many sizes, materials, and designs; Criticality experiments are necessary to understand, quantify, and validate these reactors. Approach: The National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC) operated by Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) conducts criticality experiments; Deimos is a graphite-moderated, beryllium-reflected, high assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) tri-structural isotropic (TRISO) fueled experiment; Modeling and simulation is needed to design Deimos.

Research and Development Studies for Reactor Neutrino Experiments in Turkey (RNET)

The program of the Reactor Neutrino Experiments of Turkey includes a small portable Water-based liquid scintillator detector to detect neutrinos from the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, planned to begin operating in 2023. The small near-field detector will weigh about 2-3 tons and will be placed less than 100 meters from the reactor cores. The Reactor Neutrino Experiments of Turkey program also includes a medium-size 30-ton Water-based liquid scintillator detector, which will be placed 1-2 km away from the reactor cores and will be used as a far detector. Both detectors and their responses to neutrino interactions were simulated using a GEANT4-based RAT-PAC simulation package. Here, we will share the technical and physical details of both detectors, and discuss the ongoing R&D effort for neutrino studies in Turkey.

Simulating Catalysis with Realistic Pellet Geometries Using Mesoflow: A Case Study of Catalytic Propane Dehydrogenation

We present a case study of catalytic propane dehydrogenation with our open-source multiphysics solver, Mesoflow. The solver was developed to simulate reactive flow coupled to heterogeneous catalytic reactions and deactivation in the context of complex, mesoscale geometry. The method leverages cartesian block-structured adaptive mesh refinement to capture realistic catalyst microstructural features acquired directly from X-ray computed tomography data. A kinetic model for propane dehydrogenation and catalyst deactivation was developed based on temporal analysis of products (TAP) reactor experiments. The TAP reactor experiments allow for precise characterization of intrinsic kinetic reaction steps which are implemented into Mesoflow simulations to model the spatial and temporal evolution of reactants, products, and catalyst active sites. The short-term and long-term deactivation behavior is studied by using XCT data collected from fresh and aged catalyst pellets, which exhibit different microstructural features. This study employs time-splitting algorithms to connect disparate reaction and flow timescales, enabling the simulations to achieve realistic deactivation timescales on the order of minutes while the flow time-scales for small particles (100 microns) are several milliseconds. We also introduce a flexible automated python script that writes the necessary files to construct a Mesoflow simulation from user-created chemical mechanisms. We will also introduce a few new features that are added to Mesoflow such as higher order schemes, implicit chemistry integrators and the ability to run on AMD and NVIDIA graphics-processing-units.

PROSPECT: A Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment

Nuclear reactors are a source of copious amounts of electron antineutrinos. They are emitted in the beta decays of the fission products and their energies depend on the isotopic composition of the reactor. In recent years a number of reactor antineutrino experiments including Daya Bay, Double Chooz, and RENO reported a deficit in the measured flux of antineutrinos from reactors compared to expectation and a spectral deviation in the measured energy spectra compared to model predictions. These observations led to the hypothesis of sterile neutrino oscillation as an explanation of the flux deficit. New physics or incomplete nuclear models may explain the origin of the spectral deviation. PROSPECT, the Precision Reactor Oscillation and Spectrum Experiment, is a novel neutrino experiment at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) designed to address two major scientific objectives: 1. Perform a search for eV-scale sterile neutrinos independent of reactor neutrino models by searching for the oscillation signature of massive, sterile neutrino states beyond the 3 known active neutrino species. The discovery of sterile neutrinos would indicate a new form of matter and require physics beyond the Standard Model. 2. Perform the first modern precision measurement of the antineutrino spectrum from a Highly Enriched Uranium (HEU) 235 U reactor to benchmark our understanding of the neutrino emission from nuclear reactors and to understand the isotopic origin of spectral deviations observed in previous reactor neutrino experiments.

Assessment of Technical Information Needs and Considerations for Front-End Activities for Molten Salt Fuel Types

This report details an assessment of the hazards and safety impacts related to front-end operations of molten salt reactors (MSR) as well as an assessment of existing safety guidance. Publicly available information was evaluated to make recommendations to the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for guidance development and information gathering needs. Five different MSR technologies were evaluated along with information from 1960’s about the Atomic Energy Commission programs for the Aircraft Reactor Experiment and Molten Salt Reactor Experiment. Primary areas of evaluation include fuel cycle facilities, transportation and at reactor fuel mixing operations up to reactor startup. In general, there was difficulty synthesizing publicly available information due to the early stage of the MSR development and proprietary information associated with the reactor technology companies analyzed. There are a few specific recommendations from this report. One overarching paradigm shift that the NRC needs to evaluate is the possibility of collocating fuel cycle facilities with operating MSRs. Although there is no specific prohibition to this in the NRC regulations, the collocation of the fuel cycle facilities with the operating MSR presents a novel approach compared to the light water reactor baseline. More guidance and research into thorium operations and regulation is needed. The hazards associated with the stability of stored fuel constituents need to be evaluated. Some reactor fuel cycles use beryllium, and its use and the associated hazards need further analysis. NRC-approved designs for transportation packages for shipping molten salt fuels and factory-built and fueled reactors are not available.
