ORNL Design Engineering Library: Validated Thermoelectric Digital Twins

Radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) serve a crucial role in supplying thermal and electrical energy for reliable and long-duration power in remote and extreme environments. The thermal energy is provided by the decay of radioisotopes and is converted into electrical energy using the steady-state thermoelectric process by exploiting the Seebeck effect. Maintaining a thermal gradient through the material is necessary to drive current production. Modern predictive multi-physics tools are able to effectively describe the complex and strongly coupled phenomena needed for accurate model-based system engineering efforts needed to develop higher performing RTGs. Experimental validation of model simulations is essential to confirm the accuracy, reliability, and applicability of predictive multiphysics tools. Validation fosters confidence among users, helps meet regulatory requirements, and contributes to the ongoing improvement of simulation techniques, ultimately leading to better, safer, and more efficient designs and processes. Validated models can then be used as digital twins and can be interrogated to understand and quantify the performance gaps between theoretical and physical systems. These insights can be used to build higher performing systems.

Verification of the sensitivity and uncertainty-based criticality safety validation techniques: ORNL’s SCALE case study

The use of sensitivity and uncertainty-based techniques has been well-developed in the neutronic community for criticality safety applications. Sensitivity techniques calculate the first-order relative variations in keff due to relative cross-section variations by isotope, reaction type, and incident neutron energy. The result is a vector of sensitivity coefficients which is folded with prior cross-section uncertainties to calculate the so-called similarity indices. Similarity indices are integral quantities which serve as useful mathematical measures for assessing the relevance of existing or new experiments to given application conditions, representing design systems for which the models are to be validated. Despite their importance for a wide range of validation activities, the peer-reviewed literature is non-existent on the development of rigorous verification analysis for their calculated values. Thus, this manuscript proposes a simple non-intrusive method to calculate similarity indices, serving as an independent verification tool for their evaluation. The manuscript derives the theoretical basis for the proposed verification analysis. Next, the verification analysis is applied to the ORNL’s SCALE code suite which employs adjoint-based methods to calculate similarity indices. Numerical experiments using a number of well-known benchmark experiments are employed to verify the calculation of the similarity indices.

ORNL Slicer 2 - Open Source Copyright

ORNL Slicer 2 is a slicing program for additive manufacturing. It takes a solid body mesh object, typically as .STL file, and converts that into machine readable instructions, called g-code, that a 3D printer can use to build the object. The functionality includes loading and positioning an object, slicing it into layers, fitting toolpaths to the layers, and outputting g-code to construct the object. All of this is contained within a graphical user interface (GUI) that allows the user to define all of the settings specific to their machine and process, then preview the resultant g-code before starting the printing process.

The Modeled Performance of the ORNL Matched Filter Detector for Seismic Signatures of Multi-Axle Tractor Trailers

The MINOS program seeks methods to passively monitor the transfer of special materials, which are reproducible and quantitatively defensible. To date, we have demonstrated that short-period seismometers deployed near vehicle tracks can detect and monitor signatures of multi-axle tractor trailers impacting small road obstacles as means to detect and identify some transfer activities. In this report, we model the seismic velocity signal output from a tractor-trailer impacting a small obstacle (a template waveform) to parameterize a matched filter that identifies signals with similar shapes buried in noise, and that indicate repeating events (target waveforms). We then use this model to perform thousands of synthetic experiments, in which we apply our detector to identify noisy waveforms output from a similarly modeled vehicle data set; we process all data in the same manner as we process real data collected from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) seismic network. Our experiments, while limited, reveal that the matched filter shows a high discrimination capability, and at very low SNR values (at visibility thresholds). This means that template waveforms can match target waveforms that are sourced by models that share the same vehicle speed (target vehicles), and have a low probability of mis-identification. In particular, a matched filter designed to detect a five-axle tractor-trailer will reliably identify that target vehicle down to an SNR of 11.25 dB, and within ±0.1 km/hr, while successfully screening target vehicles with three axles.

Implementation of ASHRAE Guideline 36 Control Logic into Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL)’s Flexible Research Platform (FRP)

This report presents the initial field test procedure and results for ASHRAE Guideline 36 control logic. The US Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s (ORNL’s) two-story Flexible Research Platform (FRP-2) was selected as a test building. The rooftop unit (RTU) system serves as the building’s primary cooling system, and each variable air volume (VAV) box with an electric reheat coil serves as the building’s heating system along with RTU gas furnace. In this study, the control for the RTU and VAV box adopted the practical control sequences from ASHRAE Guideline 36-2018: High-Performance Sequences of Operation. Each story of the FRP-2 building has 5 office zones (thermal zones), for a total of 10 zones.

Physics Opportunities in the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source Second Target Station Era

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) First Target Station (FTS), used by the COHERENT experiment, provides an intense and extremely high-quality source of pulsed stopped-pion neutrinos, with energies up to about 50 MeV. Upgrades to the SNS are planned, including a Second Target Station (STS), which will approximately double the expected neutrino flux while maintaining quality similar to the FTS source. Furthermore, additional space for ten-tonne scale detectors may be available. We describe here exciting opportunities for neutrino physics, other particle and nuclear physics, and detector development using the FTS and STS neutrino sources.

Interim Report on FY22 ORNL A709 Welding Research and Testing of Production Welds in Support of Developing ASME A709 Code Case Data Package

As part of the Alloy 709 ASME Code Case development effort under the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Program, this work covers the development of the technical basis for weld fabrication and weld qualification of Alloy 709. This report summarizes the Alloy 709 welding research conducted at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in FY 2022. Two new production welds were fabricated on two commercial heats of Alloy 709 of different phosphorus (P) levels using Alloy 709 filler metal with P content less than 20 wppm with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW). Both production welds successfully passed ASME Section IX weld qualification tests, and this concludes the Alloy 709 welding procedure development to scale up to 2-in thick plates. In FY 2022, we also demonstrated the success in welding of high P commercial Alloy 709 plates with weld wires having higher P content at 30 wppm. A test weld fabricated with the 30 wppm weld wire on the first commercial heat (140 wppm P) passed all weld qualification tests without issues. Additionally, experiment setup and testing procedure of the circular patch weldability test has been developed, for evaluating the P effect in weld wire on solidification cracking susceptibility of Alloy 709 weld, with the preliminary results summarized in this report. Research on further relaxing the P level restriction beyond 30 wppm are planned in FY 2023. The preliminary cross-weld creep tests results continue to show little or no creep strength reduction relative to the base metal.

Plans for Expanded Data Testing at ORNL [Slides]

VALID expansion is on-going and should provide coverage over a wider range of systems in the future. Adding additional application types beyond critical experiments can also be used in expanded data testing. Two other test suites have been developed at ORNL for other purposes, but never waste a good test suite. These suites are more likely to be relevant to testing differences in data as compared to assessing accuracy of evaluations.

GDSA - Modeling and Integration – ORNL: PFLOTRAN modeling

This report summarizes work done at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) related to post-closure criticality consequence analysis of dual-purpose canister (DPC) direct disposal in unsaturated alluvium. PFLOTRAN software was used to model the behavior of a breached DPC with low water infiltration rates and unsaturated conditions in alluvial deposits such that a low-power criticality event occurs with a focus on thermal hydrological constraints on criticality timing and power output. This summary describes initial exploration of those thermal hydrological processes and of the long-term average power output from a criticality event that could be sustained without driving water out of the DPC package and thereby terminating the criticality event. The objectives are (1) to identify, for different groundwater infiltration rates, the time at which the DPC fills with water sufficiently to potentially initiate criticality; (2) to bound the power output that could be produced by a criticality event that would thermally drive water out of the package at various percolation rates; and (3) provide an estimate of how the size of a package breach affects the water infiltration and therefore the possibility timing of criticality.
