Observation of a cosmic gamma-ray burst on Apollo 16. I - Temporal variability and energy spectrum

A cosmic gamma-ray event occurring April 27, 1972 at 10.68 UT was observed by gamma-ray and X-ray spectrometers on Apollo 16 as well as by Vela 6A. Analysis has yielded a detailed time profile of the entire event, an energy spectrum covering three order of magnitude (2.0 to 7.9 KeV and 0.067 to 5.1 MeV) and a source location. A well-defined onset prior to the main impulse period and a probable precursor are reported. The total energy of the event over the observed range was 2 x 10 to the minus 4th power ergs/sq cm. The data indicate the presence of a hard component which persists during the entire event, with a softer variable component becoming dominant during the most explosive burst portion.

Nonadiabatic strong-field photoionization revisited: Detailed analysis

We develop a theoretical framework to interpret “bump-like” enhancements in the energy distribution of electrons emitted from cesium atoms subjected to intense infrared laser fields, as observed in a recent experiment. These emissions, detected at energies approaching twice the ponderomotive energy (2⁢𝑈 p ), indicate a mechanism where electrons are nonadiabatically ejected with substantial inward velocity following ionization. The bump-like features arise from returning trajectories that scatter off the residual ion. We interpret these experimental results classically using a periodically driven version of the Bohr model and quantum mechanically through Keldysh's adiabaticity parameter (𝛾 K ) and Reiss's continuum-state intensity parameter 𝒵 in a Coulomb-corrected version of the strong-field approximation (SFA) that incorporates “complex” electronic trajectories. Notably, our theoretical analysis shows that these emissions are independent of the specific short-range form of the atomic potential.

Electrification Analysis: Manhattan Beer

This one-page highlight details the key takeaways from a project that utilized NREL's Fleet Research, Energy Data, and Insights (FleetREDI) data analysis pipeline, the Manhattan Beer Electrification Project. This project determined that Class-8 beverage distribution trucks operating in Manhattan show substantial electrification potential due to daily driving distances below 50 miles and low average speeds of 22mph or less. Their duty cycle needs can often be met by even modestly sized batteries and charging infrastructure. Vulnerable communities near their routes would benefit from fleet electrification.

Economics of internal and external energy storage in solar power plant operation

A simple approach is formulated to investigate the effect of energy storage on the bus-bar electrical energy cost of solar thermal power plants. Economic analysis based on this approach does not require detailed definition of a specific storage system. A wide spectrum of storage system candidates ranging from hot water to superconducting magnets can be studied based on total investment and a rough knowledge of energy in and out efficiencies. Preliminary analysis indicates that internal energy storage (thermal) schemes offer better opportunities for energy cost reduction than external energy storage (nonthermal) schemes for solar applications. Based on data and assumptions used in JPL evaluation studies, differential energy costs due to storage are presented for a 100 MWe solar power plant by varying the energy capacity. The simple approach presented in this paper provides useful insight regarding the operation of energy storage in solar power plant applications, while also indicating a range of design parameters where storage can be cost effective.

Mass-energy metabolic characteristics of algae

A mathematical analysis is given for the mass energy characteristics of photosynthesizing algae. An engineering-biological approach to this allows for a detailed analysis of the characteristics for a broad spectrum of environmental situations in which such algae are used as a component of a life support system. Models of such systems are constructed and are employed to demonstrate actual and hypothetical situations. Computers are employed for this purpose.

Direct Measurement of the Cosmic-Ray Carbon and Oxygen Spectra from 10 GeV/n to 2.2 TeV/n with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope on the International Space Station

In this paper, we present the measurement of the energy spectra of carbon and oxygen in cosmic rays based on observations with the Calorimetric Electron Telescope on the International Space Station from October 2015 to October 2019. Analysis, including the detailed assessment of systematic uncertainties, and results are reported. The energy spectra are measured in kinetic energy per nucleon from 10 GeV/n to 2.2 TeV/n with an all-calorimetric instrument with a total thickness corresponding to 1.3 nuclear interaction length. The observed carbon and oxygen fluxes show a spectral index change of ∼0.15 around 200 GeV/n established with a significance > 3σ. They have the same energy dependence with a constant C/O flux ratio 0.911 ± 0.006 above 25 GeV/n. The spectral hardening is consistent with that measured by AMS-02, but the absolute normalization of the flux is about 27% lower, though in agreement with observations from previous experiments including the PAMELA spectrometer and the calorimetric balloon-borne experiment CREAM.

Electrification Analysis: All Aboard America!

This one-page highlight details the key takeaways from a project that utilized NREL's Fleet Research, Energy Data, and Insights (FleetREDI) data analysis pipeline, an electrification analysis for the Bustang motorcoach fleet operated by All Aboard America! Holdings Inc. (AAA). NREL installed logging devices and collected operational data on nine 40-foot Bustang motorcoaches operating on fixed routes from May 2022 through August 2022. The analysis determined that partial fleet electrification may be feasible with electrified motorcoach options currently on the market. While this fleet faces significant challenges to electrification given current market options due to demanding range requirements and relatively limited charging opportunities, vehicles operating on the shorter, lower-grade routes along the I-25 corridor show more immediately available electrification potential. Increases in available battery capacity and the availability of fast-charging locations along I-70 routes are likely critical for electrification of the full fleet.

Comprehensive new insights on the potential use of SiC as plasma-facing materials in future fusion reactors

Abstract The performance of silicon carbide as an alternative plasma facing material (PFM) was studied at various irradiation conditions relevant to ion energies and fluxes of a fusion reactor. This analysis involves detailed modeling of subsurface plasma/material interactions, sputtered particle transport above the surface and redeposition, and related changes in material composition and microstructure induced by steady-state and Edge Localized Mode ion fluxes. Transition of a crystalline SiC surface to semi-crystalline and amorphous phases was analyzed based on advanced modeling of DIII-D tokamak experiments where SiC was irradiated in single- and multiple- L-mode and H-mode discharges. This analysis shows that displacement damage, particle deposition/redeposition, and D accumulation on the SiC divertor surface can lead to significant microstructural changes that result in enhanced sputtering erosion in comparison with the original crystalline material. However, the resulting total net erosion rate for a full-coverage, advanced tokamak, SiC coated divertor may well be acceptably low. Moreover, the C sputtering yield from the evolved SiC surface can be seven times lower than from a pure graphite surface; this would imply significantly reduced tritium co-deposition rates in a D-T tokamak reactor, compared with a pure carbon surface. It was also determined that chemical sputtering of both C and Si should not result in any noticeable effect on the net erosion, for attached plasma regimes. Our results thus show encouraging results overall for use of SiC as a PFM in tokamaks.

Analysis of OSO data to determine the structure and energy balance of the solar chromosphere

A detailed reexamination of the temperature-density structure of the photosphere and low chromosphere shows that the middle and upper chromosphere, which directly emits most of the OSO spectrum, is sensitive to conditions in this underlying region of the atmosphere. A model of this region is based on a unified compilation of all recently published broadband flux and central intensity observations of the solar spectrum from 500 microns in the far infrared to 1220 A in the far ultraviolet. This extensive compilation includes the OSO 4 and 6 observations in the wavelength range 1400 to 1220 A. A model is presented of the quiet solar atmosphere in the height range between the temperature minimum and the upper part of the chromosphere-corona transition region. This model is based on statistical equilibrium calculations of H, He 1, He 2, Si 1, C 1, and other ions.

Departure from rigid co-rotation of plasma in Jupiter's dayside magnetosphere

A preliminary analysis of detailed in situ measurements of the low-energy (10 eV to 5.95 keV) component of the Jovian magnetospheric plasma by the MIT plasma experiment on Voyager 1 is presented. The results show departure of the plasma flow from strict corotation at radial distances greater than about 10 Jovian radii. Evidence is provided which demonstrates conclusively that the observed departure from corotation is not a spacecraft-charging effect.

H-infinity synthesis using a bilinear pole shifting transform

An H-inifinity control law design is presented for a benchmark problem consisting of an undamped pair of spring-coupled masses with a sensor and actuator that are not collocated. This simple mechanical system captures many of the salient features of more complex aircraft and space structure vibration control problems. The H-infinity problem formulation enables the issue of stability robustness in the face of large mass and spring constant variation to be directly addressed. Constraints on closed-loop dominant pole locations and settling time are accommodated via a simple s-plane bilinear transform. The transform parameter can give direct control of closed-loop disturbance settling time and controller open-loop pole-zero locations. A four-state H-infinity minimum phase controller was found to meet the given specifications of each design. Detailed analysis on the tradeoffs of sensor noise vs control energy are also presented.

Near Detector Selection for Neutral Current Disappearance Search at the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program

Various short baseline neutrino experiments observe anomalies that challenge the three-flavor neutrino oscillation model, consistent with a hypothetical “sterile” neutrino that does not interact via the weak force. This poster presents a near detector event selection at the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND), developed for the first search for neutral current (NC) disappearance at short-baseline experiments. NC disappearance provides ``smoking gun” insight into the sterile neutrino question because NC interactions are equally sensitive to all three active neutrinos, meaning any change in the NC interaction rate between near and far detectors cannot be explained by oscillations among known flavor states. This analysis focuses on the NC1p topology, the most common NC interaction type at the Short-Baseline Neutrino (SBN) Program. NC topologies are inherently challenging due to their low light yield and the absence of an outgoing charged lepton, which complicates identification and leads to poor energy reconstruction as the outgoing neutrino carries away a large portion of the neutrino’s initial energy. This work presents an NC1p event selection at the near detector, highlighting SBND’s impressive detector capabilities, including trigger efficiency studies. Combined with a novel kinematic energy reconstruction technique leveraging the detector’s outstanding hadronic detail, this analysis establishes a robust near detector foundation to target an NC disappearance measurement consistent with the 3$+$1 sterile neutrino model. This SBND selection will soon be combined with the far detector to conduct an NC disappearance search, providing unique insight and complementary information to traditional charged current searches and advancing the SBN Program’s goal to resolve the sterile neutrino question, including 3$+$1 searches and beyond.

A Hybrid Transfer Function Procedure for Broadband Auralization Within Small Flight Vehicle Interiors

Auralization of the sound fields within flight vehicle interiors is of interest to aircraft designers considering crew and passenger ride quality. Computer models can be used to predict the filtering effects that the fuselage structure and interior volume have on the exterior sound field in order to simulate the resulting cabin interior noise. However, this can become expensive when a wide frequency range of analysis suitable for passenger auralization is desired. This is particularly the case when using deterministic modeling methods such as finite element analysis (FEA) wherein prohibitively high levels of detail and finite element discretizations are required to resolve the wavelengths at high frequencies. On the contrary, Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA), while not capturing important modal behaviors at low frequencies, is better suited for higher frequency analyses where structural and interior dynamics exhibit high modal overlap and spatially averaged physical quantities suffice. For this reason, a hybrid procedure is considered here that utilizes FE modal solutions at lower frequencies and SEA results at higher frequencies. A transfer function dataset containing the exterior to interior vibroacoustic filtering effect is calculated accordingly and subsequently stored to be used for a variety of exterior dynamic load cases. At low frequencies, the transfer function dataset detail is related to the level of FE model refinement whereas at high frequencies it functions as an equalizer array with a level of detail corresponding to the SEA subsystem partitioning scheme. The above procedure is described herein and demonstrated on a six passenger flight vehicle with eight propulsors in a hover flight condition.
