Relation Inference among Sensor Time Series in Smart Buildings with Metric Learning

Smart Building Technologies hold promise for better livability for residents and lower energy footprints. Yet, the rollout of these technologies, from demand response controls to fault detection and diagnosis, significantly lags behind and is impeded by the current practice of manual identification of sensing point relationships, e.g., how equipment is connected or which sensors are co-located in the same space. This manual process is still error-prone, albeit costly and laborious. We study relation inference among sensor time series. Our key insight is that, as equipment is connected or sensors co-locate in the same physical environment, they are affected by the same real-world events, e.g., a fan turning on or a person entering the room, thus exhibiting correlated changes in their time series data. To this end, we develop a deep metric learning solution that first converts the primitive sensor time series to the frequency domain, and then optimizes a representation of sensors that encodes their relations. Built upon the learned representation, our solution pinpoints the relationships among sensors via solving a combinatorial optimization problem. Extensive experiments on real-world buildings demonstrate the effectiveness of our solution.

Energetic Neutral Atom Imager on the Swedish Microsatellite Astrid

The Swedish microsatellite ASTRID was launched by a Russian Cosmos rocket on January 24, 1995 into a 1000 km circular orbit with 83 deg inclination. Besides the main objective of technological demonstration, imaging of energetic neutral atoms (ENAS) was attempted. The imager detected ENA in the energy range 0.1 - 140 keV utilizing two different techniques. Neutrals of the energy 13 - 140 keV were recorded by 14 solid state detectors with the total field of view 5 deg x 322 deg. For half a spin (approx. 1.5 s) of the ASTRID spacecraft, almost all of space was covered with an angular resolution 2.5 deg x 25 deg. Less energetic neutrals of approx. 0.1 - 70 keV were converted on a graphite target into secondary particles which then were detected by a microchannel plate with 32 anodes. A fraction of primary neutrals was directly reflected towards the sensor. This technique provided the total ENA flux with an angular resolution 4.6 deg x 11.5 deg. The instrument weight is 3.13 kg. Successful operation of the instrument during the first 5 weeks of the mission provided the first ENA images of the ring current at low altitudes.

Optimizing Insulation Design for Transformers in Medium Voltage Power Conversion Systems

Medium-frequency transformers (MFTs) play a crucial role in medium-voltage (MV) solidstate transformer (SST) systems, particularly in extreme fast charging applications. Achieving partial discharge (PD)-free operation while maintaining high power density is a significant challenge due to the high electric field (E-field) stresses inherent in MV applications. This dissertation focuses on the insulation design and optimization of MFTs used in both the main power electronics circuits and auxiliary power supplies. The study begins with an overview of insulation testing methodologies, including high potential tests, basic insulation level tests, and PD tests, which are critical for evaluating MFT insulation reliability. Given the importance of PD-free operation for long-term reliability, particular emphasis is placed on understanding PD mechanisms, including void, corona, and surface discharge, and their mitigation strategies. A high voltage isolated auxiliary power supply is then introduced, utilizing a gapped transformer encapsulated in silicone gel. This design achieves PD-free insulation up to 18 kV RMS while maintaining low coupling capacitance to minimize common-mode current. The proposed solution ensures reliable operation in MV environments and offers a scalable approach for auxiliary power in cascaded SST architectures. To improve MFT insulation in main power conversion circuits, a novel structure is developed using polypropylene sheets and potting compounds to create a void-free air gap, effectively mitigating E-field intensity. A prototype transformer with this insulation structure is built and achieves PD-free operation up to 30 kV RMS. This design is experimentally validated in a resonant converter operating at 46 kW, demonstrating its feasibility for MV SST applications. Further optimization is implemented to enhance MFT performance for dual-active-bridge(DAB) converters by integrating a semiconductive shielding layer within the insulation structure. This shielding layer improves the magnetic coupling coefficient while effectively confining the E-field within high insulation materials, thereby reducing eddy current losses. The optimized MFT achieves PD-free operation at 12.6 kV RMS and is successfully tested in a DAB converter operating at 43 kW, which meets the insulation requirements for a 13.2 kV SST system. This dissertation advances MFT insulation design by introducing and experimentally validating novel approaches that improve high voltage insulation while optimizing magnetic coupling and manufacturability. The proposed insulation structures enable PD-free operation while minimizing insulation material usage and simplifying assembly, making them ideal for high power, high voltage applications.

Demonstration of Electroreduction Technology to Convert GNF Uranium Oxide Powder to Metal

Global Nuclear Fuel – Americas LLC (GNF) has partnered with Argonne National Laboratory to demonstrate electroreduction of uranium oxides produced by deconversion of UF 6 to uranium metal through the Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear (GAIN) program under the U.S. Department of Energy to accelerate the domestic production of metallic advanced reactor fuels. Electroreduction of uranium oxide was first demonstrated and patented by Argonne in the early 2000s as a technology to convert used oxide nuclear fuel from light water reactors to metal for further fuel reprocessing. More recently, electroreduction has been proposed as a front-end technology for metallization of uranium oxides produced by deconversion of UF 6 and for scrap recovery of oxide materials. During the electroreduction process, UO 2 powder is contained in a stainless-steel mesh basket with a cathode lead located in the center of the UO 2 bed. The basket is immersed in lithium chloride molten salt electrolyte containing 1 wt% lithium oxide along with a platinum anode and a nickel/nickel oxide (Ni/NiO) reference electrode. Current is applied to the cell between the cathode and anode to reduce the UO 2 to metallic uranium via a solid-state reduction reaction. Oxide ions released from the UO 2 during reduction are transported through the salt to the anode where oxygen gas is evolved. Once reduction is complete, the basket containing the metallicized uranium is removed from the salt and can be processed to remove the salt and consolidate the uranium into an ingot for use in metallic fuel fabrication. This project was performed to provide evidence of the electroreduction technology readiness level for metallization of UO 2 powder, identify and retire technical risks for industrialization of electroreduction, and accelerate the path to commercialization for metallic fast reactor fuel production. To that end, five electroreduction tests were performed with UO 2 provided by GNF and the resulting product was analyzed for the extent of conversion to metal and for impurity contents of the metal product to verify that electroreduction does not introduce impurities that would prevent use of the product in metallic fuel fabrication.

CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Edition2A)

The Single Scanner Footprint TOA/Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF) product contains one hour of instantaneous Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data for a single scanner instrument. The SSF combines instantaneous CERES data with scene information from a higher-resolution imager such as Visible/Infrared Scanner (VIRS) on TRMM or Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on Terra and Aqua. Scene identification and cloud properties are defined at the higher imager resolution and these data are averaged over the larger CERES footprint. For each CERES footprint, the SSF contains the number of cloud layers and for each layer the cloud amount, height, temperature, pressure, optical depth, emissivity, ice and liquid water path, and water particle size. The SSF also contains the CERES filtered radiances for the total, shortwave (SW), and window (WN) channels and the unfiltered SW, longwave (LW), and WN radiances. The SW, LW, and WN radiances at spacecraft altitude are converted to Top-of-the-Atmosphere (TOA) fluxes based on the imager defined scene. These TOA fluxes are used to estimate surface fluxes. CERES Single Scanner Satellite Footprint, TOA, Surface Fluxes and Clouds (SSF)- Test data in HDF (CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset-Edition1)

Only footprints with adequate imager coverage are included on CER_SSF_TRMM-PFM-VIRS_Subset_Edition1the SSF which is much less than the full set of footprints on the CERES ES-8 product.
