Propeller modulation effects on a scanning beam microwave landing system

An investigation to assess the modulation effects on microwave signals transmitted through rotating propeller blades. Interruption of the antenna line-of-sight signal by the rotating propeller causes a variation of path loss, which produces essentially an amplitude modulation of the received signal. This interruption or blockage effect is generally only partial because of edge diffraction around the particular interfering propeller blade. Signals reflected from the rotating propeller will also cause Doppler frequency shifts to be present in the received signals. A scanning beam microwave landing system (MLS) known as MODILS (modular instrument landing system) was used to process the received signals for display. The effects of propeller modulation were studied by varying the following parameters: (1) spacing between propeller and receiving antenna, (2) propeller dimensions, (3) propeller speed (rpm), (4) number of propeller blades, (5) system data rate, (6) receiver response time, and (7) receiver antenna aperture.

A study program on large aperture electronic scanning phased array antennas for the shuttle imaging microwave system

Fundamental phased array theory and performance parameters are discussed in terms of their application to microwave radiometry, and four scanning phased arrays representing current examples of state-of-the-art phased array technology are evaluated for potential use as components of the multispectral antenna system for the space shuttle imaging microwave system (SIMS). A discussion of problem areas, both in performance and fabrication is included, with extrapolations of performance characteristics for phased array antennas of increased sizes up to 20 m by 20 m. The possibility of interlacing two or more phased arrays to achieve a multifrequency aperture is considered, and, finally, a specific antenna system is recommended for use with SIMS.

Interferometric scans of interstellar K I lines

Results of interferometric scans of the interstellar 7669 wavelength line of neutral potassium are reported toward 26 stars at 1.2 km/sec resolution. The advantages of the K I line, as compared with other optical interstellar lines, are discussed. Recent progress in photoanalytical techniques are shown to make possible the effective realization in practice of the inherent advantages of the K I line.

Scanning electron microscopy of lunar regolith from the Sea of Fertility

Scanning electron microscopy was used in studying the morphology and cathodoluminescence of lunar regolith particles. Surface and structure of two groups of particles are differentiated: (1) Crystalline with well defined facets and spalling surfaces, which are grains of minerals and rock fragments: and (2) amorphous, fused, and partially or entirely glazed particles. Local melting of particles and the round openings on their surfaces are attributed to secondary influence on the regolith of factors of lunar weathering and above all micrometeoric impacts.

Diffusion length measurements using the scanning electron microscope

A measurement technique employing the scanning electron microscope is described in which values of the true bulk diffusion length are obtained. It is shown that surface recombination effects can be eliminated through the application of highly doped surface field layers. The influence of high injection level effects and low-high junction current generation on the resulting measurement was investigated. Close agreement is found between the diffusion lengths measured by this method and those obtained using a penetrating radiation technique.

Formulation of the information capacity of the optical-mechanical line-scan imaging process

An expression for the information capacity of the optical-mechanical line-scan imaging process is derived which includes the effects of blurring of spatial, photosensor noise, aliasing, and quantization. Both the information capacity for a fixed data density and the information efficiency (the ratio of information capacity to data density) exhibit a distinct single maximum when displayed as a function of sampling rate, and the location of this maximum was determined by the system frequency-response shape, signal-to-noise ratio, and quantization interval.

Data analysis study and performance evaluation of the scanning laser Doppler system

A simulation program which provided information on theoretically expected vortex spectra, evaluations of potential algorithms, and expected location accuracies for given scan patterns is presented. Field tests using an aircraft engine flow field and aircraft vortices during flyby tests were compared to the results of the simulation. From these studies, a vortex location algorithm was developed which provided vortex location for one or two vortices as a function of time. Results of this algorithm used on data from flyby tests were used to study vortex transport, to evaluate system performance, and to provide suggestions for real-time vortex location algorithms. The results of real-time analysis were compared to those which were expected based on theoretical considerations.

Tropical cyclone rainfall as measured by the Nimbus 5 electrically scanning microwave radiometer

A selected group of 1973 North Pacific Ocean tropical cyclones was studied by using data from the Nimbus 5 Electrically Scanning Microwave Radiometer (ESMR), the Temperature-Humidity Infrared Radiometer (THIR), NOAA-2 and USAF DMSP imageries. From the unique combination of infrared, visible, and microwave data, it was possible during various stages of storm development to differentiate between dense cirrus outflow and rain areas, to identify centers of circulation and areas of low-level moisture, and by the use of a theoretical model to estimate semi-quantitatively areas of light, moderate, and heavy rainfall rates.

Electrically scanning microwave radiometers

The electrically scanning microwave radiometer (ESMR) developed for and currently used onboard the Nimbus 5 meteorological satellite is described, along with the ESMR developed for the Nimbus F satellite. They serve for synoptic mapping of microwave emissions from the earth's surface, the instrument on Nimbus 5 measuring these emissions at a wavelength of 1.55 cm (19.35 GHz) and the instrument on Nimbus F, at a wavelength of 0.81 cm (37 GHz). Radiative transfer characteristics measured at these wavelengths are sufficiently different from IR measurements to permit derivation and interpretation of unique meteorological, geomorphological, and oceanographic data.

Scanning electron microscopy of a pink inclusion from the Allende meteorite

A scanning electron microscope study of a fine-grained, pin, Ca-rich inclusion from the Allende meteorite has revealed strong evidence for direct condensation of its constituent minerals from a vapor. This observation extends to the alkali-bearing phases in addition to the Ca-, Al-silicates and suggests that the feldspathoids as well as the refractory silicates are solar nebular condensates.

Self-scanned Digicon - A digital image tube for astronomical spectroscopy

We have successfully fabricated, tested, and operated a digital image tube consisting of a magnetically focused image intensifier tube in which a self-scanned linear array of 1024 silicon photodiodes operating in the EBS mode serves as the photoelectron image detector, amplifier, and intermediate image storage device. Integral on-chip MOS shift registers driven by an external clock sequentially interrogate the photodiodes through MOS FET multiplex switch arrays. Each output frame is a sequence of 256 analog pulses on each of four video lines. Laboratory and observing tests show that the output signal is photoelectron shot noise limited over at least a range of 1-100,000 detected photoelectrons per picture element, indicating that single photon detection is achieved. High-resolution astronomical spectroscopy has been carried out in the coude spectrograph of the 2.7-m telescope at McDonald Observatory. Examples are shown.

Diffusion length measurement using the scanning electron microscope

The present work describes a measuring technique employing the scanning electron microscope in which values of the true bulk diffusion length are obtained. It is shown that surface recombination effects can be eliminated through application of highly doped surface field layers. The effects of high injection level and low-high junction current generation are investigated. Results obtained with this technique are compared to those obtained by a penetrating radiation (X-ray) method, and a close agreement is found. The SEM technique is limited to cells that contain a back surface field layer.

Application of thermal scanning to the study of transverse mixing in rivers

Remote sensing has shown itself to be a valuable research tool in the study of transverse mixing in rivers. It is desirable, for a number of reasons, to study and predict the two-dimensional movement of pollutants in the region just downstream of a pollutant discharge point. While many of the more common pollutants do not exhibit a spectral signature, it was shown that the temperature difference between the pollutant and the receiving water could be successfully exploited by applying a mathematical model of mass transport processes to heat transport, and testing and calibrating it with thermal scanning data.

Highly efficient antenna system using a corrugated horn and scanning hyperbolic reflector

In a horn-reflector antenna system for producing a spherical aperture phase front, a corrugated conical horn illuminates a section of a hyperbolic reflector to produce a spherical aperture phase front. This front produces a far field beam with low sidelobes and high beam efficiency. The system is insensitive to frequency and polarization changes, and is also insensitive to orientation about the axis of the conical horn for beam scanning.
