Oxygen desorption from YBa2Cu3O(7-x) and Bi2CaSr2Cu2O(8 + delta) superconductors

Oxygen desorption experiments from YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (YBCO) and Bi2CaSr2Cu2O(8 + delta) (BSCCO) superconductors were carried out using a quadrupole mass spectrometer for monitoring the desorbing species and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy for surface characterization. Molecular oxygen was found to desorb from both superconductors following photoirradiation with ultraviolet/optical radiation and subsequent heating at over 150 C. Both YBCO and BSCCO were found to have similar oxygen desorption rates and similar activation energies. The desorption data as well as the X-ray photoemission data indicate that the oxygen desorption is not intrinsic to the superconductors but rather due to molecular oxygen entrapped in the material.

Diskoseismology: Probing accretion disks. I - Trapped adiabatic oscillations

The normal modes of acoustic oscillations within thin accretion disks which are terminated by an innermost stable orbit around a slowly rotating black hole or weakly magnetized compact neutron star are analyzed. The dominant relativistic effects which allow modes to be trapped within the inner region of the disk are approximated via a modified Newtonian potential. A general formalism is developed for investigating the adiabatic oscillations of arbitrary unperturbed disk models. The generic behavior is explored by way of an expansion of the Lagrangian displacement about the plane of symmetry and by assuming separable solutions with the same radial wavelength for the horizontal and vertical perturbations. The lowest eigenfrequencies and eigenfunctions of a particular set of radial and quadrupole modes which have minimum motion normal for the plane are obtained. These modes correspond to the standard dispersion relation of disk theory.

Methane spectral line widths and shifts, and dependences on physical parameters

A detailed report of the recent high-resolution spectroscopic research on widths and shifts measured for a strong infrared-active fundamental of methane is presented. They were measured in collision with several rare gases and diatomic molecules, in the vibrational-rotational fundamental near 3000/cm. These measurements were made at an ambient temperature of 294 K over a range of pressures from 100 to 700 torr. The measurements are discussed in a preliminary but detailed and quantitative manner with reference to masses, polarizabilities, and quadrupole moments. Some functional dependences on these physical parameters are considered. The present data are useful for studies of corresponding planetary spectra.

Acoustic sources in the low Mach number turbulent boundary layer

The sources of sound production in a low Mach number turbulent boundary layer are examined. The sources are shown to be quadrupole in nature and to result from supersonically convecting wave-number components of the fluctuating Reynolds' normal stresses. The primary Tollmien-Schlichting instability of the boundary layer is found to radiate no sound. Analysis of various vortical phenomena suggests that the primary source is the process of formation of horseshoe vortices, with viscous sublayer bursts a possible secondary source.

Atomic Clock Based On Linear Ion Trap

Highly stable atomic clock based on excitation and measurement of hyperfine transition in 199Hg+ ions confined in linear quadrupole trap by radio-frequency and static electric fields. Configuration increases stability of clock by enabling use of enough ions to obtain adequate signal while reducing non-thermal component of motion of ions in trapping field, reducing second-order Doppler shift of hyperfine transition. Features described in NPO-17758 "Linear Ion Trap for Atomic Clock." Frequency standard based on hyperfine transition described in NPO-17456, "Trapped-Mercury-Ion Frequency Standard."

Global scale auroral emissions on Jupiter

Jupiter's aurora are normally confined to limited regions around the magnetic poles. Our collected spectra show that very unusual periods of global scale auroral activity occurred during September and November of 1988. During the global scale events, the H2 and H3(+) emissions remained confined to their unusual auroral zones, but strong, unidentified emissions appeared in the vicinity of the H2 quadrupole lines. This would suggest that unusual periods of widespread magnetospheric dumping occurred.

Magnetic correlations in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 from NQR relaxation and specific heat

La-139 and Cu-63 Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) relaxation measurements in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 for x ranging from 0 up to 0.3, with particular emphasis on the effect of doping on the Cu(2+) magnetic correlations and dynamics, are reviewed. In the low doping limit, x less than or equal to 0.05, the results can be interpreted consistently in terms of a simple phenomenological 'two-fluids' model whereby the effect of thermally-activated mobile O(2p) holes is the one of disrupting locally the Cu(2+) spin correlations. For x greater than or equal to 0.1, the results indicate the onset, as T approaches T(sub c)(+), of a strong coupling between Cu(2+) spins and the Fermi liquid of O(2p) holes leading to the apparent disappearance of localized Cu(2+) moment in connection with the opening of a superconducting gap.

Applications of the Strategic Defense Initiative's compact accelerators

The Strategic Defense Initiative's (SDI) investment in particle accelerator technology for its directed energy weapons program has produced breakthroughs in the size and power of new accelerators. These accelerators, in turn, have produced spinoffs in several areas: the radio frequency quadrupole linear accelerator (RFQ linac) was recently incorporated into the design of a cancer therapy unit at the Loma Linda University Medical Center, an SDI-sponsored compact induction linear accelerator may replace Cobalt-60 radiation and hazardous ethylene-oxide as a method for sterilizing medical products, and other SDIO-funded accelerators may be used to produce the radioactive isotopes oxygen-15, nitrogen-13, carbon-11, and fluorine-18 for positron emission tomography (PET). Other applications of these accelerators include bomb detection, non-destructive inspection, decomposing toxic substances in contaminated ground water, and eliminating nuclear waste.

The magnetic field of Neptune

The Voyager 2 observations obtained during the Neptune encounter are used to develop a spherical harmonic model of the planetary magnetic field of Neptune. The model yields a dipole of magnitude 0.14 G R(N) exp 3, tilted by 47 deg toward 72 deg west longitude. Neptune's quadrupole is equal to or exceeding in magnitude the surface dipole field; the octupole is also very large, although less well constrained. The characteristics of the Neptune's magnetic field are illustrated using contour maps of the field on the planet's surface.

An interpretation of the field alignment in AM Herculis type systems

The magnetic white dwarfs in AM Herculis-type systems are known to have field structures which differ significantly from that of a centered dipole. The implied quadrupole asymmetry is used to explain the observed orientations of the accretion regions relative to the red star. In particular, an interpretation is presented of the result that in four systems where two accretion shocks are observed, the region with the weaker magnetic pole is the stronger accretor.

Development of a shock noise prediction code for high-speed helicopters - The subsonically moving shock

A previously defined airfoil subsonic shock-noise prediction formula whose result depends on a mapping of the time-dependent shock surface to a time-independent computational domain is presently coded and incorporated in the NASA-Langley rotor-noise prediction code, WOPWOP. The structure and algorithms used in the shock-noise prediction code are presented; special care has been taken to reduce computation time while maintaining accuracy. Numerical examples of shock-noise prediction are presented for hover and forward flight. It is confirmed that shock noise is an important component of the quadrupole source.

The magnetic field and magnetospheric configuration of Uranus

A significant and unique planetary magnetic field discovered by Voyager 2 is presented. A large tilt of 58.6 deg of the magnetic-dipole axis from the rotation axis was found. Combined with a large offset of 0.3 RU of the magnetic dipole from the center of the planet, the moment of 0.23 gauss-RU3 leads to field magnitudes at the surface which vary widely between 0.1 and 1.0 gauss. A simple diagram illustrating the offset tilted dipole of Uranus and some field lines is shown. A more exact and accurate spherical-harmonic model of the planetary field, which includes both dipole and quadrupole moments, is derived. There exists a well-developed bipolar magnetic tail on the night side of the planet which rotates daily about the extended planet-sunline with Uranus because of the large obliquity of the Uranian rotation axis.

Dissociative attachment of electrons with Si2H6

Cross-sections for the production of negative ion fragments by electron attachment to Si2H6 and ion pair formation from it have been measured by utilizing the crossed electron beam-molecular beam collision technique. The negative ions are mass-analyzed by employing a quadrupole mass spectrometer. There are serious disagreements between the present and two previously published results. In the present paper cross-section values, appearance potentials, and the various channels of dissociation for the formation of negative monosilane fragments are presented.

Measuring Omega and the real correlation function from the redshift correlation function

Peculiar velocities distort the correlation function of galaxies in redshift space. In the linear regime, the distortion has a characteristic quadrupole plus hexadecapole form. The amplitude of the distortion depends on the cosmological density parameter Omega. Practical formulas are derived here which can be applied to redshift galaxy catalogs to measure Omega in the linear regime. The formulas also yield the real underlying correlation function in the linear regime, corrected for peculiar velocities.

Cold dark matter confronts the cosmic microwave background - Large-angular-scale anisotropies in Omega sub 0 + lambda 1 models

A new technique is used to compute the correlation function for large-angle cosmic microwave background anisotropies resulting from both the space and time variations in the gravitational potential in flat, vacuum-dominated, cold dark matter cosmological models. Such models with Omega sub 0 of about 0.2, fit the excess power, relative to the standard cold dark matter model, observed in the large-scale galaxy distribution and allow a high value for the Hubble constant. The low order multipoles and quadrupole anisotropy that are potentially observable by COBE and other ongoing experiments should definitively test these models.

Three-dimensional structure of a curved wake

The effects of streamwise curvature on the 3D structure of a plane wake are studied. Preliminary results indicate that the wake is initially grossly 3D with large spanwise distortions in the mean velocity and Reynolds stress contours. Local extrema distributed in a quasi-periodic manner are seen. The spanwise variations are caused by the presence of relatively strong quadrupoles of mean streamwise vorticity. Further downstream the mean vorticity decays at a rate lower on the unstable side of the wake so that only the unstable side row of vortices persist to the far-field region. As a result, the spanwise distortions and local extrema seem to persist with a relatively slow decay. The effects of curvature are also apparent in the Reynolds stress results. In particular, the shear stress is significantly affected by curvature right from the start such that significantly higher magnitudes are observed on the unstable side. The curved wake clearly develops a very 3D asymmetric structure which shows no signs of reaching an equilibrium state.

Variability of near-infrared emission lines in NGC 4151 - Implications for nuclear star formation

Multiaperture infrared spectra of the circumnuclear region of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 taken over a 10 year period show that the N = 7-4 B-gamma hydrogen recombination line is variable. The H2 quadrupole line emission shows no sign of variability. It is shown that there is a substantial contribution to the nuclear B-gamma flux from the active nucleus, making it impossible to determine star formation rates from infrared hydrogen recombination lines in active galaxies. The lack of variability in the H2 line fluxes indicates that ionizing photons from the active nucleus is not important in exciting the molecular line emission.

Equilibrium properties of transition-metal ion-argon clusters via simulated annealing

The geometrical structures of M(+) (Ar)n ions, with n = 1-14, have been studied by the minimization of a many-body potential surface with a simulated annealing procedure. The minimization method is justified for finite systems through the use of an information theory approach. It is carried out for eight potential-energy surfaces constructed with two- and three-body terms parametrized from experimental data and ab initio results. The potentials should be representative of clusters of argon atoms with first-row transition-metal monocations of varying size. The calculated geometries for M(+) = Co(+) and V(+) possess radial shells with small (ca. 4-8) first-shell coordination number. The inclusion of an ion-induced-dipole-ion-induced-dipole interaction between argon atoms raises the energy and generally lowers the symmetry of the cluster by promoting incomplete shell closure. Rotational constants as well as electric dipole and quadrupole moments are quoted for the Co(+) (Ar)n and V(+) (Ar)n predicted structures.
