AOI.1 Application of Artificial Intelligence techniques enabling coal fired power plants the ability to achieve higher efficiency, improved availability, and increased reliability of their operations (Final Report)

During this effort, SparkCognition with support from the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) was tasked with applying artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the reliability, efficiency, and safety of operations at a coal-fired plant. By implementing AI techniques, like machine learning (ML), it is believed that operators can leverage existing data sources to gain more insights such as advanced warning of machine degradation. With enough lead time, a reliability engineer can take action to minimize, or even avoid, impact to production. To complete this work effort, SparkCognition developed and refined an ML-based model using sensor data for a Steam Turbine unit at a host site. The models were deployed in an online, web-based solution that allows users to visualize model outputs and supporting data. The final solution, based on SparkCognition’s proprietary software platform called SparkPredict®, was shared with EPRI who completed an online evaluation of results to determine the solution’s ability to detect actionable events.

Livermore tomography tools: Accurate, fast, and flexible software for tomographic science

Livermore Tomography Tools (LTT) is a customizable scientific software package that enables a broad range of research and development efforts into computed tomography (CT). Here, it was developed to process x-ray and neutron CT data accurately and rapidly from raw detector counts to reconstructed volumes with the flexibility to handle many special cases. LTT fulfills long-term CT software goals to provide quantitatively accurate results reported in physical units (e.g., mm -1 or cm -1 ) while exploiting all available computational advantages to maximize speed. Written in C/C++ with support for multiple CPUs and GPUs, LTT runs on many computing platforms (Linux/Unix, Windows, and Mac; laptops to supercomputers). As a result, LTT can:process data acquired from various custom-built and commercially available CT scanners, model and simulate x-ray and neutron interactions to encourage algorithm prototyping, and allow for rapid insertion of the latest algorithms. We describe LTT’s software architecture, user interfaces, and its 88 algorithms (as of this writing) for pre-processing, reconstruction, post-processing, and simulation that support many scanner geometries (parallel-, fan-, cone-beam, and custom). Several applications are presented that illustrate LTT’s accuracy, speed, and flexibility relative to other solutions.

Evaluating software defined networking solutions to reduce the digital attack surface of nuclear security systems

Most nuclear security systems used today were not designed for today’s threat environment. Systems that were intended to be stand alone are now interconnected. Devices that have a single purpose are built on multi-purpose platforms and communication protocols that, while effective, have no ability to authenticate authorized versus unauthorized commands. These attributes provide an attacker significant ability to affect the system, pivot throughout the interconnected networks, and remain undetected if he/she is able to compromise a single node. Software defined networking (SDN) has been used for years by information technology (IT) cloud service providers to quickly provision or remove servers or other systems to meet changing demand. The same concept has recently been applied to operational technology (OT) systems to enable very fast failover on critical systems that have stringent and deterministic (<5ms) transmit/receive times. By carefully engineering the communication flows through a network using preplanned routes and specific pathways it is possible to achieve deterministic and extremely reliable message delivery even when components fail. This engineering approach to network design has added security benefits including securing the networking control plane, eliminating network scanning and mapping, inhibiting ARP spoofing and host masquerading, eliminating unauthorized network pivoting and enabling greater situational awareness on the network. SDN in OT environments is new but early testing in electrical power and other critical infrastructure has shown it to be a very powerful tool for building reliable networks and reducing the digital attack surface of the network. The authors tested a software defined network switch on a simple physical protection system with components commonly found in nuclear security systems and found improved mitigations to denial of service attacks, lateral movement and network reconnaissance. The paper details the tests and their results.

Impact of particle loading and phase coupling on gas–solid flow dynamics: A case study of a two-phase, gas–solid flow in an annular pipe

The present study is devoted to a two-phase, gas–solid flow in an annular pipe (hollow cylinder) at an elevated pressure of 15 bars and moderate Reynolds number of circa 6000. The influence of the particle loading, the interaction between the phases, and turbulence dispersion on the flow dynamics is systematically studied by means of computational fluid dynamics simulations, employing the Ansys FLUENT commercial package. The cases with a particle volumetric fraction of 1.2% are referred to as “high particle loading,” and those with 0.13% are denoted as “low particle loading.” The following cases are investigated: (1) pure gas flow; (2) low particle loading two-phase flow with one-way coupling and with turbulence dispersion; (3) low particle loading two-phase flow with two-way coupling but without turbulence dispersion; (4) low particle loading two-phase flow with two-way coupling and with turbulence dispersion; (5) high particle loading two-phase flow with one-way coupling and with turbulence dispersion; (6) high particle loading two-phase flow with two-way coupling but without turbulence dispersion; and (7) high particle loading two-phase flow with two-way coupling and with turbulence dispersion. Additionally, the boundary layer is found to grow without fluctuations of the turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) for cases 1, 2, and 5. For case 4, the TKE fluctuations have been identified, although they appear to be less substantial than those in cases 6 and 7. The authors attribute the semi-chaotic nature of the TKE fluctuations to the particle loading and two-way coupling. In addition, the onset and development of the flow instability have been observed at a random axial distance in cases 4, 6, and 7. Such instability is also attributed to the two-way coupling with turbulence dispersion in the flow. It is concluded that the particle loading, one-way, or two-way coupling between the phases, and the turbulence dispersion models significantly influence the development of the flow dynamics with the same inlet and boundary conditions. Consequently, it is not a trivial question, which result a user should trust. The present computational results inspire to perform verification as well as experimental validation of the simulations, so the simulation results can subsequently be used with confidence for design analysis.

DeCOIL: Optimization of Degenerate Codon Libraries for Machine Learning-Assisted Protein Engineering

With advances in machine learning (ML)-assisted protein engineering, models based on data, biophysics, and natural evolution are being used to propose informed libraries of protein variants to explore. Synthesizing these libraries for experimental screens is a major bottleneck, as the cost of obtaining large numbers of exact gene sequences is often prohibitive. Degenerate codon (DC) libraries are a cost-effective alternative for generating combinatorial mutagenesis libraries where mutations are targeted to a handful of amino acid sites. However, existing computational methods to optimize DC libraries to include desired protein variants are not well suited to design libraries for ML-assisted protein engineering. To address these drawbacks, we present DEgenerate Codon Optimization for Informed Libraries (DeCOIL), a generalized method which directly optimizes DC libraries to be useful for protein engineering: to sample protein variants that are likely to have both high fitness and high diversity in the sequence search space. Using computational simulations and wet-lab experiments, we demonstrate that DeCOIL is effective across two specific case studies, with potential to be applied to many other use cases. DeCOIL offers several advantages over existing methods, as it is direct, easy-to-use, generalizable, and scalable. With accompanying software, DeCOIL can be readily implemented to generate desired informed libraries.

Hybrid metal additive/subtractive machine tools and applications

Additive manufacturing creates parts by depositing a preform, typically layer by layer. Subtractive manufacturing involves removing material from a preform to create parts. Hybrid machine tools combine both additive and subtractive processes in the same workspace. They can be used to create parts that meet functional tolerance and surface finish requirements, or to create features that are difficult to produce using additive or subtractive processes alone. Here, this paper describes hybrid metal additive/subtractive machine tools. It covers design considerations, sensors and controls, process management, programming and software, and the impact on the design space. It also identifies future research challenges.

ExaWind: Opportunity for Discovery

The predictive simulation of the dynamics of modern wind turbines and wind farms is a high-performance-computing (HPC) grand challenge. Modern wind turbines are the largest rotating machines in the world, with rotor diameters exceeding 200 meters, and with heights well into the atmospheric boundary layer. To address this grand challenge, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Wind Energy Technologies Office and the Exascale Computing Project have been supporting the creation of the ExaWind modeling and simulation environment since 2016. ExaWind is composed of the incompressible-flow computational-fluid-dynamics (CFD) solvers AMR-Wind and Nalu-Wind and the wind-turbine-dynamics solver OpenFAST. In our hybrid CFD approach, Nalu-Wind unstructured-grid models resolve the near-body flow around the turbine; those models are embedded in, and two-way coupled to, an AMR-Wind structured-grid mesh through overset meshes. In this talk I give an overview of ExaWind software stack and describe how it is being used to address important problems in wind energy.

A cost–benefit framework to evaluate capacity upgrade options in overhead line transmission planning

This paper presents the methodology behind the new Reconductoring Economic and Financial Analysis (REFA) tool, an open-access software, used by transmission utilities to evaluate transmission capacity enhancement options. The proposed methodology is intended to be used in a new planning stage, after the capacity expansion and prior to the individual transmission project engineering, allowing capacity upgrade options (reconductoring, rebuild or voltage upgrade), and respective conductor selection, to be compared under the same economic basis. Furthermore, the REFA tool implements a methodology to rank project options and conductor types based on economic criteria, considering an approximation of the ampacity and sag constraints. Results, using 5 real transmission lines in the US, show that least-cost combinations of project and conductor types can be very diverse, which emphasizes the need for the proposed methodology and tool.

Can the United States Maintain Its Leadership in High-Performance Computing? - A report from the ASCAC Subcommittee on American Competitiveness and Innovation to the ASCR Office

The United States (U.S.) is no longer the unambiguous leader in the vitally important field of high performance computing (HPC). Japan, the European Union (EU), and China have fielded systems that are on par with our fastest supercomputers. The supply chain for everything from semiconductors to scientific software is globally distributed. Yet our economic future and security depend critically on our ability to innovate faster than our competitors, and the speed of innovation depends increasingly on large-scale computational science and engineering and thus HPC. How should the United States respond to this challenge? This report seeks to initiate a new and potentially transformative national discussion on this vital question. The Department of Energy’s (DOE) Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) program is well-positioned to make informed, targeted decisions about where the United States should cooperate and where it should compete in the global market for scientific exploration and discovery. By setting its sights on problems critical to our nation and the world, by establishing productive new collaborations, and by making strategic investments, ASCR can restore and maintain U.S. scientific leadership in the critical areas described in this report while strengthening our research infrastructure and training a large, diverse cohort of scientists. In doing so, ASCR and its scientists will pave the way for a secure and prosperous future for America. For more than 30 years, the ASCR program has provided the HPC and networking capabilities and expertise needed to support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States. The program now faces the challenge of developing and deploying the next generation of HPC systems and technologies, as well as supporting the application of HPC and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies to a wide range of scientific and engineering research problems. Through its research and development efforts, the ASCR program must also advance the state of the art in HPC and accelerate the pace of scientific discovery and technological innovation. Fulfilling this promise will require significantly increased investments, as well as innovative policies and programs. This subcommittee is aware that we are making recommendations and calls for action at a time when federal resources are limited. We understand that a wide range of competing priorities must be balanced by the nation’s leaders and that there is a need to leverage resources in new ways and seek efficiencies in facilities and operations. However, we must not let these realities limit our imagination or silence our advocacy. The ASCR program is a key part of the U.S. research infrastructure and an important component of economic growth and U.S. competitiveness. ASCR has a responsibility to pursue its mission, including advanced scientific computing, applications of AI technologies, and the required advanced research facilities, with determination and enthusiasm. To fulfill the scientific enterprise’s responsibility to the nation, the ASCR program must not only develop and publish a clear vision with an associated list of goals, priorities, and recommendations but also demonstrate scientific leadership by consistently securing long-term funding. This will allow the program to build on its achievements to date, to realize its ambitious vision, and to make lasting contributions to the field.
