Stabilized Finite Elements in FUN3D

A Streamlined Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (SUPG) stabilized finite-element discretization has been implemented as a library into the FUN3D unstructured-grid flow solver. Motivation for the selection of this methodology is given, details of the implementation are provided, and the discretization for the interior scheme is verified for linear and quadratic elements by using the method of manufactured solutions. A methodology is also described for capturing shocks, and simulation results are compared to the finite-volume formulation that is currently the primary method employed for routine engineering applications. The finite-element methodology is demonstrated to be more accurate than the finite-volume technology, particularly on tetrahedral meshes where the solutions obtained using the finite-volume scheme can suffer from adverse effects caused by bias in the grid. Although no effort has been made to date to optimize computational efficiency, the finite-element scheme is competitive with the finite-volume scheme in terms of computer time to reach convergence.

Investigating the Transonic Flutter Boundary of the Benchmark Supercritical Wing

This paper builds on the computational aeroelastic results published previously and generated in support of the second Aeroelastic Prediction Workshop for the NASA Benchmark Supercritical Wing configuration. The computational results are obtained using FUN3D, an unstructured grid Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes solver developed at the NASA Langley Research Center. The analysis results focus on understanding the dip in the transonic flutter boundary at a single Mach number (0.74), exploring an angle of attack range of 􀀀1 to 8 and dynamic pressures from wind off to beyond flutter onset. The rigid analysis results are examined for insights into the behavior of the aeroelastic system. Both static and dynamic aeroelastic simulation results are also examined.

Analysis of Base-Heating Environment During Ground Testing of a Lunar Lander Demonstrator

A three-dimensional, unstructured-grid, pressure-based, reacting flow, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and heat transfer methodology was employed to study the base-heating environment of a lunar lander demonstrator, during terrestrial ground testing. Two base-heating environments were investigated: lunar lander demonstrator sitting on pad, and lunar lander demonstrator hovering at a distance above ground. Two unique and quite different base-flow physics are found for these two cases. In the case of demonstrator sitting on pad, the computed heat fluxes are high and the base flow is unsteady, caused by a Coanda effect precursor that makes the fountain jet oscillate about the center of the base. For the second case, due to the higher elevation of the demonstrator and the layout of the nozzles, the Coanda effect forces the fountain jet to be attached to two of the nozzle plumes, resulting in much lower computed base heat fluxes.

Application of Extended Messinger Models to Complex Geometries

Since, ice accretion can significantly degrade the performance and the stability of an airborne vehicle, it is imperative to be able to model it accurately. While ice accretion studies have been performed on airplane wings and helicopter blades in abundance, there are few that attempt to model the process on more complex geometries such as fuselages. This paper proposes a methodology that extends an existing in-house Extended Messinger solver to complex geometries by introducing the capability to work with unstructured grids and carry out spatial surface streamwise marching. For the work presented here commercial solvers such as STAR-CCM+ and ANSYS Fluent are used for the flow field and droplet dispersed phase computations. The ice accretion is carried out using an in-house icing solver called GT-ICE. The predictions by GT-ICE are compared to available experimental data, or to predictions by other solvers such as LEWICE and STAR-CCM+. Three different cases with varying levels of complexity are presented. The first case considered is a commercial transport airfoil, followed by a three-dimensional MS(1)-317 swept wing. Finally, ice accretion calculations performed on a Robin fuselage have been discussed. Good agreement with experimental data, where applicable, is observed. Differences between the ice accretion predictions by different solvers have been discussed.

LAURA Users Manual: 5.6

This users manual provides in-depth information concerning installation and execution of Laura, version 5. Laura is a structured, multiblock, computational aerothermodynamic simulation code. Version 5 represents a major refactoring of the original Fortran 77 Laura code toward a modular structure afforded by Fortran 95. The refactoring improved usability and maintainability by eliminating the requirement for problem-dependent recompilations, providing more intuitive distribution of functionality, and simplifying inter- faces required for multi-physics coupling. As a result, Laura now shares gas-physics modules, MPI modules, and other low-level modules with the Fun3D unstructured-grid code. In addition to internal refactoring, several new features and capabilities have been added, e.g., a GNU-standard installation process, parallel load balancing, automatic trajectory point sequencing, free-energy minimization, and coupled ablation and flow field radiation.

The paper reports on the new developments to the flow solver and assesses the accuracy, scalability, and efficiency. The USM3D assessments are conducted using a baseline method and the recent hierarchical adaptive nonlinear iteration method framework. Two benchmark turbulent flows, namely, a subsonic separated flow around a three-dimensional hemisphere-cylinder configuration and a transonic flow around the ONERA M6 wing are considered.

TPSAS-NF1676L-10874-DND

An unstructured grid flow solver, FUN3D has been used for simulation of unsteady flow on a partially dressed nose landing gear with closed cavities. Results obtained from an hybrid RANS/LES and delayed DES turbulence models are presented. Solutions have been obtained for a series of successively finer grids to quantify the effect of grid refinement. Computed surface pressures and perturbation pressures, and flow quantities in selected planes are compared with the experimental data. The power spectral density at several locations is also compared with the measured data. Overall agreement of FUN3D results with the experimental data is encouraging and the correlation with the measured data generally improves with grid refinement.

Performance and Portability of a Linear Solver Across Emerging Architectures

A linear solver algorithm used by a large-scale unstructured-grid computational fluid dynamics application is examined for a broad range of familiar and emerging architectures. Efficient implementation of a linear solver is challenging on recent CPUs offering vector architectures. Vector loads and stores are essential to effectively utilize available memory bandwidth on CPUs, and maintaining performance across different CPUs can be difficult in the face of varying vector lengths offered by each. A similar challenge occurs on GPU architectures, where it is essential to have coalesced memory accesses to utilize memory bandwidth effectively. In this work, we demonstrate that restructuring a computation, and possibly data layout, with regard to architecture is essential to achieve optimal performance by establishing a performance benchmark for each target architecture in a low level language such as vector intrinsics or CUDA. In doing so, we demonstrate how a linear solver kernel can be mapped to Intel® Xeon™ and Xeon Phi™, Marvell® ThunderX2®, NEC® SX-Aurora™ TSUBASA Vector Engine, and NVIDIA® and AMD® GPUs. We further demonstrate that the required code restructuring can be achieved in higher level programming environments such as OpenACC, OCCA, and Intel® OneAPI™/SYCL, and that each generally results in optimal performance on the target architecture. Relative performance metrics for all implementations are shown, and subjective ratings for ease of implementation and optimization are suggested.
