Superconducting Nb3Ge for high-field magnets

Superconducting Nb3Ge tape conductors 5 to 10 m long were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition. Such tapes could be used in high-field magnet applications. Average tape properties set the upper performance limit of a magnet at 17 teslas (4.2 K). Highest critical-current densities obtained in thin and layered films set the upper performance limit at 20 teslas (4.2 K).

Electric discharge for treatment of trace contaminants

A radio frequency glow discharge reactor is described for removing trace oxidizable contaminants from an oxygen bearing atmosphere. The reaction chamber is defined by an inner metal electrode facing a dielectric backed by an outer conductive electrode. In one embodiment, a conductive liquid forms the conductor of an outer electrode and cools the dielectric. A resonator coupled to a variable radio frequency source generates the high voltages for creating a glow discharge in the chamber at a predetermined pressure whereby the trace contaminants are oxidized into a few simple non-toxic products that may be easily recovered. The corresponding process for removal of trace contaminants from an oxygen-bearing atmosphere with high efficiency independent of the concentration level is also disclosed.

Large space system: Charged particle environment interaction technology

Large, high voltage space power systems are proposed for future space missions. These systems must operate in the charged-particle environment of space and interactions between this environment and the high voltage surfaces are possible. Ground simulation testing indicated that dielectric surfaces that usually surround biased conductors can influence these interactions. For positive voltages greater than 100 volts, it has been found that the dielectrics contribute to the current collection area. For negative voltages greater than-500 volts, the data indicates that the dielectrics contribute to discharges. A large, high-voltage power system operating in geosynchronous orbit was analyzed. Results of this analysis indicate that very strong electric fields exist in these power systems.

Description and charging results from the RSPM

Representative satellite materials, to be flown on STP-78-2 in 1979 on the SSPM instruments, were included as part of the AFGL Rocket payload flown from White Sands Missile Range on January 21, 1978. Potentials as high as + 1100 volts on the conductor and + or - 400 volts on the insulator were recorded by the RSPM near the minimum in the electron density vs altitude profile. In addition to the charging potentials measured during ion gun operation, sample charging currents also were recorded with time resolutions near 30 milliseconds. These results demonstrate the validity of the experiment concept of the SSPM on SCATHA.

Mass Driver Two - Cryogenic module

The cryogenic module of Mass Driver Two comprises a 3.25 inch (82.55 mm) OD bucket with two 44 kilo-ampere-turn coils made with .028 inch (.71 mm) diam niobium-titanium multi-filamentary cable in a copper matrix, impregnated with lead alloy for thermal inertia, as well as the service station to refrigerate, energize and eject the bucket. The station is housed in a six inch flanged pyrex cross which connects to the four inch pyrex tube of the mass driver itself. The bucket is refrigerated by being forced against a copper braid cradle attached to the bottom of a liquid helium reservoir which protrudes into the cross from above. The bucket is energized inductively by turning off two superconducting coils which are also attached to the helium reservoir, and which have maintained the correct flux linkage through the bucket coils during their cool-down through the critical temperature. Once charging is completed, the clamping pressure is released and the bucket is injected into the mass driver by means of two normal-conductor pulse coils surrounding the horizontal branches of the cross.

Analysis of resistance-versus-pressure relations for the diamond indentor-anvil system

Pressures in excess of 1.4 Mbars have been attained by Ruoff and Wanagel (1977) by pressing tiny spherical diamond indentors (tip radius of 2 microns or less) against a diamond anvil. This system has been used for resistance-vs-pressure measurements as follows. A thin (200 A) coherent layer of a conductor, e.g., palladium, can be sputtered on the tip and on the anvil and electrical leads can then be attached to these at points remote from the contact area. Then a thin layer of the sample to be studied can be evaporated, sputtered, or placed on the anvil. When the indentor is pressed against the sample, the resistance changes as the pressure increases and as the contact radius increases. This paper analyzes the resistance-vs-pressure relationship for three different types of resistivity-vs-pressure behavior.

Effects of boron and glass hybrid epoxy-composites on graphite-fiber release in an aircraft fire

Recent studies have shown that the benefits gained by using graphite-epoxy composite structures may not be realized without some risk. The graphite fibers are very good electrical conductors and fibers released into the environment during a fire create a possible hazard to electrical equipment. Several graphite-epoxy hybrids were exposed to a fire and simulated explosion and their graphite fiber retention characteristics were examined. Several low melting-temperature glasses which wet and clump graphite-fibers and a glass/graphite fabric which reduced impact damage were identified as promising hybridizing components to minimize graphite fiber release.

Magnetospheres of the Galilean satellites

The plasma and field perturbations of magnetospheres that would surround magnetized Galilean satellites embedded in the corotating Jovian plasma differ from those produced by interaction with an unmagnetized conductor. If the intrinsic satellite dipole is antiparallel to that of Jupiter, the magnetosphere will be open. It is predicted that Io has an internal magnetic field with a dipole moment of 6.5 x 10 to the 22nd gauss-cubic centimeters antiparallel to Jupiter's, and Io's special properties can be interpreted on the basis of a reconnecting magnetosphere.

Applications of free-space microwave power transmission

Some applications and properties of free-space power transmission are examined. Among the properties discussed are: no mass, either in the form of wire conductors or ferrying vehicles, is needed between the source of energy and the point of consumption; energy can be transferred at the velocity of light; no loss of energy in transferring energy throught the vacuum of space; and the energy transfer is insensitive to a difference in the gravitational potential of the transmitter and receiver locations. Applications discussed include the Solar Power Satellite, high altitude platforms for communications and remote sensing. Also discussed are rectennas and retrodirective arrays. Finally, an expression yielding minimum cost is presented.

High-acceleration mass drivers

High-acceleration mass drivers are discussed including the MD2 model of axial geometry, with individually powered drive coils of 13.1 cm diameter. Timing is derived through the interruption of light beams by the moving armature (bucket). Electric power is provided by the resonant discharge of sector capacitor banks through silicon-controlled rectifiers in a two-phase, quadrature circuit. The bucket flies in vacuum, guided by passive dynamic eddy-current magnetic forces, those currents flowing in strip conductors lining the inside of a nonconducting vacuum pipe. Quantitative measurements are obtained with a solid bucket carrying two superconducting coils with a current density of 25 kA/sq cm. A cryogenic station for cooling the bucket to liquid helium temperature is connected to the vacuum pipe.
