Producibility aspects of advanced composites for an L-1011 Aileron

The design of advanced composite aileron suitable for long-term service on transport aircraft includes Kevlar 49 fabric skins on honeycomb sandwich covers, hybrid graphite/Kevlar 49 ribs and spars, and graphite/epoxy fittings. Weight and cost savings of 28 and 20 percent, respectively, are predicted by comparison with the production metallic aileron. The structural integrity of the design has been substantiated by analysis and static tests of subcomponents. The producibility considerations played a key role in the selection of design concepts with potential for low-cost production. Simplicity in fabrication is a major factor in achieving low cost using advanced tooling and manufacturing methods such as net molding to size, draping, forming broadgoods, and cocuring components. A broadgoods dispensing machine capable of handling unidirectional and bidirectional prepreg materials in widths ranging from 12 to 42 inches is used for rapid layup of component kits and covers. Existing large autoclaves, platen presses, and shop facilities are fully exploited.

Quick-connect threaded attachment joint

Joint is self-aligning and tightens with only sixty-five degrees of rotation for quick connects and disconnects. Made of injection-molded plastics or cast or machined aluminum, joint can carry wires, tubes, liquids, or gases. When two parts of joint are brought together, their shapes align them. Small projections on male section and slots on female section further aid alignment; slight rotation of male form engages projections in slots. At this point, threads engage and male section is rotated until joint is fully engaged.

Friction characteristics of three 30 by 11.5-14.5, type 8, aircraft tires with various tread groove patterns and rubber compounds

A test program was conducted to evaluate friction performance and wear characteristics on wet runways of three 30 x 11.5-14.5, type, aircraft tires having two different tread patterns and natural rubber contents. All test tires had the standard three circumferential groove tread, but two had molded transverse grooves which extended from shoulder to shoulder. The tread rubber content of the two tires with transverse grooves differed in that one had a 100 percent natural rubber tread and the other had a rubber tread composition that was 30 percent synthetic and 70 percent natural. The third test tire had the conventional 100 percent natural rubber tread. Results indicate that the differences in tire tread design and rubber composition do not significantly affect braking and cornering friction capability on wet or dry surfaces. Braking performance of the tires decreases with increased speed, with increased yaw angle and, at higher speeds, with increased wetness of the surface.

Flight IV technical report for experiment 74-37 contained polycrystalline solidification in low-G

Experiments were performed to study the effect of a low-gravity environment on the columnar-to-equiaxed transition (CET) during polycrystalline solidification. Solutions of H2O-30 wt% NH4Cl and H2O-37 wt% NH4Cl were solidified in semicylindrical molds with radial heat extraction. Both solutions were quenched from the same soak temperature (90 C); the respective superheat temperatures were, therefore, approximately 57 and 23 C. The lower superheat resulted in a completely columnar structure, and the higher superheat resulted in a 1/3 columnar - 2/3 equiaxed microstructure; these results were independent of the relationship between heat flow direction and gravity. Grain multiplication mechanisms observed were showering, thermal inversion driven convection cells, and compositionally induced density inversion driven convection cells.

Novel silicon crystals and method for their preparation

Plate shaped silicon crystals and their preparation by pouring a silicon melt into a suitable mold and then allowing it to solidify in a temperature gradient were investigated. The production of energy by direct conversion of solar energy into electrical energy by means of solar cells takes on increasing importance. While this type of energy production is already the prevailing form today in the realm of satellite technology, its terrestrial application has thus far encountered strict limitations owing to the high price of such solar cells. Of the greatest interest in this connection are silicon cells. A substantial reduction in the semiconductor material costs and the costs involved in the further processing to make solar cells are prerequisites for a rational market growth for solar energy.

Fiber reinforced PMR polyimide composites

Commercially obtained PMR-15 polyimide prepregs with S-glass and graphite fiber reinforcements were evaluated along with in-house prepared glass and graphite cloth PMR 2 materials. A novel autoclave approach was conceived and used to demonstrate that both the PMR systems respond to 1.4 MPa (200 psi) autoclave pressures to produce void free composites equivalent to die molded laminates. Isothermal gravimetric analysis and subsequent mechanical property tests indicated that the PMR 2 system was significantly superior in thermo-oxidative stability, and that S-glass reinforcements may contribute to the accelerated degradation of composites at 316 C (600 F) when compared to graphite fiber reinforced composites. Fully reversed bending fatigue experiments were conducted with a type of fixture unused for organic matrix composites. These studies indicated that the graphite fiber composites were clearly superior in fatigue resistance to the glass fiber reinforced material and that PMR matrix composite systems yield performance of the same order as composite materials employing other families of matrices.

Conductivity of materials made of aluminum nitride and silicon nitride mixtures

To establish the possible mechanism for conductivity in aluminum nitride a study was made of the electric conductivity of pure AlN and its mixtures with silicon nitride at different temperatures and partial pressures of nitrogen in the gas phase. The thermoelectromotive force was also measured. The experiments used polycrystalline samples of cylindrical shape 18 mm in diameter made of powders by hot pressing in graphite press molds at a temperature of 1973-2273 K and pressure 1,470,000 n/sqm. The items obtained by this method had porosity not over 5%. After pressing, the samples were machined to remove carbon from the surface, and were annealed in a stream of dry ammonia for 10 h at a temperature of 1273-1373 K. Electric conductivity was measured according to the bridge scheme on an alternating current of frequency 10 kHz. In order to guarantee close contact of the platinum electrodes with the surface of the samples, a thin layer of platinum was sprayed on them. Experiments were conducted in the temperature interval 1273-1573 K with a half hour delay at each assigned temperature with heating and cooling.

Shape of two-dimensional solidification interface during directional solidification by continuous casting

An analysis was made of the two-dimensional solidification of an ingot being cooled and withdrawn vertically downward from a mold consisting of parallel walls of finite length. Heat transfer analysis shows how the flatness of the interface is related to the ingot thickness, the withdrawal rate, the heat addition from the superheated liquid metal, and the temperature difference available for cooling. This provides an understanding of the conditions that will yield a maximum rate of casting while achieving the desired flatness of the interface. The results are interpreted with respect to the conditions for obtaining an aligned eutectic structure by directional solidification. In this process an additional constraint must be included that relates the ingot withdrawal rate and the heat transfer rate from the liquid metal to the solidification interface.

Results of transonic tests in the NASA/MSFC 14-inch trisonic wind tunnel on a 0.004-scale model (74-OTS) space shuttle launch vehicle (FA25)

The primary objective of the test was to determine the aerodynamic increments due to the attach structure. Secondary objectives were to determine the effects of: (1) orbiter nose mold line changes; (2) wire bundle fairings on data measurements; and (3) flow angularity. The scale model was tested over the Mach range from 0.60 to 1.25 at angles of attack and sideslip from -8 to +8 deg. The total pressure was 22 psia for all runs. Six-component orbiter data were obtained from a balance in the orbiter which was sting supported. The external tank was attached to the solid rocket booster, each of which was sting supported. An alternate two sting/two balance arrangement was also tested with a single sting and balance in the external tank measuring combined ET/SRB aero data replacing the two stings in the SRB's. Two runs were also made at Mach number 4.96 with the two SRB's removed. The aerodynamic coefficients obtained are tabulated as a function of angle of attack or sideslip for each Mach number value.
