Thermal Analysis of a Polypropylene Capacitor for Resonant Tuning Networks in WPT Applications

This study presents the thermal analysis of polypropylene capacitors operating at high frequencies and high currents used in the resonant tuning networks for electric vehicle (EV) wireless charging systems. The thermal analysis and performance results of the CELEM polypropylene capacitors are presented at different currents for a polyphase wireless power transfer (WPT) system while the study can be expanded to other capacitors by different manufacturers. Thermal equivalent circuit of the capacitor is derived and required cold plate size and design calculations are conducted by modeling the polypropene capacitor in MATLAB. The polypropene capacitor's finite element analysis (FEA) model is developed using COMSOL Multiphysics simulation software, and the thermal characteristics and analysis of the capacitor are presented in this paper.

Secure Federated Learning Across Heterogeneous Cloud and High-Performance Computing Resources: A Case Study on Federated Fine-Tuning of LLaMA 2

Federated learning enables multiple data owners to collaboratively train robust machine learning models without transferring large or sensitive local datasets by only sharing the parameters of the locally trained models. Here, in this article, we elaborate on the design of our Advanced Privacy-Preserving Federated Learning (APPFL) framework, which streamlines end-to-end secure and reliable federated learning experiments across cloud computing facilities and high-performance computing resources by leveraging Globus Compute, a distributed function as a service platform, and Amazon Web Services. We further demonstrate the use case of APPFL in fine-tuning an LLaMA 2 7B model using several cloud resources and supercomputers.

Performance Debugging and Tuning of Flash-X with Data Analysis Tools

State-of-the-art multiphysics simulations running on large scale leadership computing platforms have many variables contributing to their performance and scaling behavior. We recently encountered an interesting performance anomaly in Flash-X, a multiphysics multicomponent simulation software, when characterizing its performance behavior on several large-scale HPC platforms. The anomaly was tracked down to the interaction between the use of dynamic allocation of scratch data and data locality in the cache hierarchy. In this paper we present the details of unexpected performance variability of Flash-X, its extensive analysis using the performance measurement tool TAU to collect the data and Python data analysis libraries to explore the data, and our insights from this experience. In this process, we discovered and removed or mitigated two additional performance limiting bottlenecks for performance tuning.

Triple-Halide Bandgap Tuning in Top Cells for Perovskite/Si Tandems

We found Br/I mixed perovskite with high fraction of Cs can steadily incorporate Cl-based perovskite to tune the bandgap. The resulting films exhibit significant improvement in the mobility and lifetime of photocarriers. In 1.67eV wide-bandgap perovskite top cells optimized for perovskite/Si tandems, we achieved a great reducing of voltage-of-open-circuit (VOC) deficit from 0.57eV to 0.45eV, which is among the best of perovskite top cells in Si tandems reported so far. The stabilized PCE is improved from 17-18% to 20%, featured with high VOC (1.22V) and high FF (83%). This advance in wide-bandgap top cells holds promise for improving perovskite/Si tandems.

Grid Forming Control Tuning for a Hybrid Inverter-Based Resource Power Plant

A hybrid inverter-based resource (IBR) power plant consists of grid-following (GFL) and grid-forming inverter-based resources (GFM-IBR) connected in parallel. Here, this research focuses on how to design and tune GFM's control parameters to ensure stable operation of the hybrid power plant for weak and strong grid conditions. We consider two design cases: one where the GFL-IBR does not provide frequency support, and one where it does. It is found that the GFM's power-frequency synchronizing system can lose stability when the power-frequency droop constant is large and/or the grid is strong. Additionally, if the GFL has its frequency support enabled, oscillation stability worsens. To explain the mechanism of the interactions, we construct a feedback system for the synchronizing loop, which consists of the GFM's power-frequency droop control that generates the GFM's synchronizing angle, the GFL's phase-locked loop that measures the voltage phase angle, the GFL's frequency-power control that generates its power order, and the rest of the system. The feedback system is effective in illustrating the potential stability risks. Successful design ensures that the hybrid power plant can operate smoothly and ride through grid disturbances.

Overview of High-Power Wireless Charging Systems and Analysis of Polyphase Wireless Charging System Phase Winding and Resonant Tuning Network Connection Configurations

In spite of the high energy efficiency and environmental benefits of electric vehicles (EVs), adoption rates are increasing at a relatively slow pace, primarily because of EVs’ limited range and long charging durations. To reduce EV charging times to be comparable to refueling times of conventional vehicles, extreme fast charging systems are required. Such charging systems would reduce drivers’ range anxiety and enable long-distance interstate travel with EVs. Here, this substantial target in charging rates with 15–20 minutes of recharging times, requires research and development from grid to batteries with advanced charging systems. Wireless power transfer systems for EV charging applications are flexible, convenient, and highly efficient, and they allow automated charging. This paper reviews the power electronics and winding and resonant tuning network configurations for polyphase wireless power transfer systems for high-power wireless charging applications.

The extent of multiallelic, co‐editing of LIGULELESS1 in highly polyploid sugarcane tunes leaf inclination angle and enables selection of the ideotype for biomass yield

Summary Sugarcane ( Saccharum spp. hybrid) is a prime feedstock for commercial production of biofuel and table sugar. Optimizing canopy architecture for improved light capture has great potential for elevating biomass yield. LIGULELESS1 ( LG1 ) is involved in leaf ligule and auricle development in grasses. Here, we report CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated co‐mutagenesis of up to 40 copies/alleles of the putative LG1 in highly polyploid sugarcane (2 n = 100–120, x = 10–12). Next generation sequencing revealed co‐editing frequencies of 7.4%–100% of the LG1 reads in 16 of the 78 transgenic lines. LG1 mutations resulted in a tuneable leaf angle phenotype that became more upright as co‐editing frequency increased. Three lines with loss of function frequencies of ~12%, ~53% and ~95% of lg1 were selected following a randomized greenhouse trial and grown in replicated, multi‐row field plots. The co‐edited LG1 mutations were stably maintained in vegetative progenies and the extent of co‐editing remained constant in field tested lines L26 and L35. Next generation sequencing confirmed the absence of potential off targets. The leaf inclination angle corresponded to light transmission into the canopy and tiller number. Line L35 displaying loss of function in ~12% of the lg1 NGS reads exhibited an 18% increase in dry biomass yield supported by a 56% decrease in leaf inclination angle, a 31% increase in tiller number, and a 25% increase in internode number. The scalable co‐editing of LG1 in highly polyploid sugarcane allows fine‐tuning of leaf inclination angle, enabling the selection of the ideotype for biomass yield.

First demonstration of tuning between the Kitaev and Ising limits in a honeycomb lattice

Recent observations of novel spin-orbit coupled states have generated interest in 4d/5d transition metal systems. A prime example is the J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in iridate materials and α-RuCl 3 that drives Kitaev interactions. Here, by tuning the competition between spin-orbit interaction (λ SOC ) and trigonal crystal field (Δ T ), we restructure the spin-orbital wave functions into a previously unobserved μ = $\frac{1}{2}$ state that drives Ising interactions. This is done via a topochemical reaction that converts Li 2 RhO 3 to Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 . Using perturbation theory, we present an explicit expression for the μ = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit Δ T ≫ λ SOC realized in Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 , different from the conventional J eff = $\frac{1}{2}$ state in the limit λ SOC ≫ Δ T realized in Li 2 RhO 3 . The change of ground state is followed by a marked change of magnetism from a 6 K spin-glass in Li 2 RhO 3 to a 94 K antiferromagnet in Ag 3 LiRh 2 O 6 .

Chemically tuned intermediate band states in atomically thin Cu x GeSe/SnS quantum material for photovoltaic applications

A new generation of quantum material derived from intercalating zerovalent atoms such as Cu into the intrinsic van der Waals gap at the interface of atomically thin two-dimensional GeSe/SnS heterostructure is designed, and their optoelectronic features are explored for next-generation photovoltaic applications. Advanced ab initio modeling reveals that many-body effects induce intermediate band (IB) states, with subband gaps (~0.78 and 1.26 electron volts) ideal for next-generation solar devices, which promise efficiency greater than the Shockley-Queisser limit of ~32%. The charge carriers across the heterojunction are both energetically and spontaneously spatially confined, reducing nonradiative recombination and boosting quantum efficiency. Using this IB material in a solar cell prototype enhances absorption and carrier generation in the near-infrared to visible light range. Tuning the active layer’s thickness increases optical activity at wavelengths greater than 600 nm, achieving ~190% external quantum efficiency over a broad solar wavelength range, underscoring its potential in advanced photovoltaic technology.

Nematic quantum criticality in an Fe-based superconductor revealed by strain-tuning

Quantum criticality may be essential to understanding a wide range of exotic electronic behavior; however, conclusive evidence of quantum critical fluctuations has been elusive in many materials of current interest. An expected characteristic feature of quantum criticality is power-law behavior of thermodynamic quantities as a function of a nonthermal tuning parameter close to the quantum critical point (QCP). Here, we observed power-law behavior of the critical temperature of the coupled nematic/structural phase transition as a function of uniaxial stress in a representative family of iron-based superconductors, providing direct evidence of quantum critical nematic fluctuations in this material. These quantum critical fluctuations are not confined within a narrow regime around the QCP but rather extend over a wide range of temperatures and compositions.

A computational study of Al n - and Al n -1 1Pt - clusters: the effects of doping and a uniform tuning gauge for single-atom nanocatalysts

Results of density functional theory calculations on Al n - and Al n -1 1Pt - , n = 2-8, clusters are presented and analyzed. The analysis includes different structural forms of the clusters characterized in terms of binding energy, spin and symmetry, and a comparative evaluation of various properties of the two systems viewed as connected through a single-Pt substitutional doping and examined in terms of their respective most stable structures. Furthermore, the Al n -1 1Pt - clusters are then used as a paradigmatic (model) case of single-atom nanocatalysts, with Pt as the catalytic center and Al n-1 as its support, to implement a uniform descriptor for gauging the tuning effects of all the parameters ( "knobs ") of a nanocatalyst that include the identity of the active center and the material and size of its support.

Fine-tuning of mTOR signaling by the UBE4B-KLHL22 E3 ubiquitin ligase cascade in brain development

ABSTRACT Spatiotemporal regulation of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) pathway is pivotal for establishment of brain architecture. Dysregulation of mTOR signaling is associated with a variety of neurodevelopmental disorders. Here, we demonstrate that the UBE4B-KLHL22 E3 ubiquitin ligase cascade regulates mTOR activity in neurodevelopment. In a mouse model with UBE4B conditionally deleted in the nervous system, animals display severe growth defects, spontaneous seizures and premature death. Loss of UBE4B in the brains of mutant mice results in depletion of neural precursor cells and impairment of neurogenesis. Mechanistically, UBE4B polyubiquitylates and degrades KLHL22, an E3 ligase previously shown to degrade the GATOR1 component DEPDC5. Deletion of UBE4B causes upregulation of KLHL22 and hyperactivation of mTOR, leading to defective proliferation and differentiation of neural precursor cells. Suppression of KLHL22 expression reverses the elevated activity of mTOR caused by acute local deletion of UBE4B. Prenatal treatment with the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin rescues neurogenesis defects in Ube4b mutant mice. Taken together, these findings demonstrate that UBE4B and KLHL22 are essential for maintenance and differentiation of the precursor pool through fine-tuning of mTOR activity.

Automated tuning of a ring-assisted MZI-based interleaver for Kerr frequency combs

We demonstrate a compact ring-assisted Mach–Zehnder interferometer (RAMZI)-based silicon photonic interleaver with a 400 GHz free spectral range (FSR), featuring flat passbands exceeding a spectral range of 50 nm. Additionally, we introduce a novel, to the best of our knowledge, add-on structure and tuning method enabling automated compensation for fabrication imperfections, precise shaping of the RAMZI flat-top passbands, and alignment with Kerr comb lines. Experimental results have shown successful interleaving of eight channels of distributed-feedback (DFB) lasers as well as a 200 GHz Kerr comb, both achieving an extinction ratio of approximately 20 dB.

Fine-tuning TrailMap: The utility of transfer learning to improve the performance of deep learning in axon segmentation of light-sheet microscopy images

Light-sheet microscopy has made possible the 3D imaging of both fixed and live biological tissue, with samples as large as the entire mouse brain. However, segmentation and quantification of that data remains a time-consuming manual undertaking. Machine learning methods promise the possibility of automating this process. This study seeks to advance the performance of prior models through optimizing transfer learning. We fine-tuned the existing TrailMap model using expert-labeled data from noradrenergic axonal structures in the mouse brain. By changing the cross-entropy weights and using augmentation, we demonstrate a generally improved adjusted F1-score over using the originally trained TrailMap model within our test datasets.

Towards Improving luminosity using optics tuning and data-driven methods

The results of Run 24 experiments at Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) for improving luminosity using optics tuning are presented in this study. In the first experiment, MADx matching was used to output magnet strengths corresponding to specific s star movements around Interaction Region 8 (IR8). The corresponding Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) signal was measured in place of luminosity, and Bayesian Optimization aids search of optimal movements. It was found that values retrieved from matching were inaccurate, resulting in negative feedback loops. The second experiment focused on calculating accurate s star movements. The matching method was replaced with a linear sensitivity matrix, directly relating optics to power supply, and its null space was used to fit constraints such as hysteresis effects. At the experiment, beam losses were observed at collimators around boundary of IR8, which were fixed for the third experiment. Dynamic mode decomposition was also introduced to improve quality of turn-by-turn (TBT) data as well as accuracy and consistency of optics measurements at IR8. These improvements will be tested in the experiment of next RHIC run for luminosity optimization.
