Pulsed phase locked loop strain monitor

A pulse phase locked loop system according to the present invention is described. A frequency generator such as a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO) generates an output signal and a reference signal having a frequency equal to that of the output signal. A transmitting gate gates the output frequency signal and this gated signal drives a transmitting transducer which transmits an acoustic wave through a material. A sample/hold samples a signal indicative of the transmitted wave which is received by a receiving transducer. Divide-by-n counters control these gating and sampling functions in response to the reference signal of the frequency generator. Specifically, the output signal is gated at a rate of F/h, wherein F is the frequency of the output signal and h is an integer; and the received signal is sampled at a delay of F/n wherein n is an integer.

Wide bandwidth phase-locked loop circuit

A PLL circuit uses a multiple frequency range PLL in order to phase lock input signals having a wide range of frequencies. The PLL includes a VCO capable of operating in multiple different frequency ranges and a divider bank independently configurable to divide the output of the VCO. A frequency detector detects a frequency of the input signal and a frequency selector selects an appropriate frequency range for the PLL. The frequency selector automatically switches the PLL to a different frequency range as needed in response to a change in the input signal frequency. Frequency range hysteresis is implemented to avoid operating the PLL near a frequency range boundary.

Phase-locked laser array

A phase-locked laser array comprises a substrate with two spaced-apart pluralities of channels extending towards different reflecting surfaces of the array. The axes of symmetry of the channels of one plurality are offset from the axes of symmetry of the channels of the second plurality. Coupling of light propagating in the optical waveguides over one plurality of channels into the waveguides over the second plurality of channels induces a zero phase difference between the laser oscillations of adjacent channels.

Method of remotely estimating a rest or best lock frequency of a local station receiver using telemetry

A system includes a remote station and a local station having a receiver. The receiver operates in an unlocked state corresponding to its best lock frequency (BLF). The local station derives data indicative of a ratio of the BLF to a reference frequency of the receiver, and telemeters the data to the remote station. The remote station estimates the BLF based on (i) the telemetered data, and (ii) a predetermined estimate of the reference frequency.

Self-locking clamping tool with swivel jaws

A plier-like tool (11) having two plier-like members (13, 15) pivotally joined togther intermediate of their ends and having handle portions (17, 18) and swivel jaw members (29,30). An automatic locking mechanism (27) extending between the members permits an user to clamp the handle portions together so as to clamp the jaw members on an object (25) but holds the position so reached if the clamping action of the user is removed. A release device (65) is provided so that the jaw members may be opened up again. A compression spring (23) extending between the members (19, 20) assists in the opening of the jaw members. The swivel jaw members (29, 30) permit the user to rotate the plier-like members (13,15) relative to the object (25) being grasped.

Time-Gating Processes in Intra-Cavity Mode-Locking Devices Like Saturable Absorbers and Kerr Cells

Photons are non-interacting entities. Light beams do not interfere by themselves. Light beams constituting different laser modes (frequencies) are not capable of re-arranging their energies from extended time-domain to ultra-short time-domain by themselves without the aid of light-matter interactions with suitable intra-cavity devices. In this paper we will discuss the time-gating properties of intra-cavity "mode-locking" devices that actually help generate a regular train of high energy wave packets.

Payload Launch Lock Mechanism

A payload launch lock mechanism includes a base, a preload clamp, a fastener, and a shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator. The preload clamp is configured to releasibly restrain a payload. The fastener extends, along an axis, through the preload clamp and into the base, and supplies a force to the preload clamp sufficient to restrain the payload. The SMA actuator is disposed between the base and the clamp. The SMA actuator is adapted to receive electrical current and is configured, upon receipt of the electrical current, to supply a force that causes the fastener to elongate without fracturing. The preload clamp, in response to the fastener elongation, either rotates or pivots to thereby release the payload.

Lock-In Imaging System for Detecting Disturbances in Fluid

A lock-in imaging system is configured for detecting a disturbance in air. The system includes an airplane, an interferometer, and a telescopic imaging camera. The airplane includes a fuselage and a pair of wings. The airplane is configured for flight in air. The interferometer is operatively disposed on the airplane and configured for producing an interference pattern by splitting a beam of light into two beams along two paths and recombining the two beams at a junction point in a front flight path of the airplane during flight. The telescopic imaging camera is configured for capturing an image of the beams at the junction point. The telescopic imaging camera is configured for detecting the disturbance in air in an optical path, based on an index of refraction of the image, as detected at the junction point.

Continuum Modeling of the Dynamics of Externally Injection Locked Coupled Oscillator Arrays

Mutually injection locked arrays of electronic oscillators provide a novel means of controlling the aperture phase of a phased array antenna thus achieving the advantages of spatial power combining while retaining the ability to steer the radiated beam. In this work we develop a continuum model which results in a single partial differential equation for the aperture phase as a function of time.

Passively mode-locked interband cascade lasers

Optical frequency combs have revolutionized the field of high resolution real-time molecular spectroscopy. Here, we demonstrate an electrically-driven optical frequency comb whose sub-picosecond pulses span more than 1 THz of spectral bandwidth centered near 3.3 mm. This is achieved by passively mode locking an interband cascade laser in a multi-contact architecture with gain and saturable absorber sections monolithically integrated on the same chip.

Benefits of Trash-to-Gas Versus Jettison of Waste Via Trash-Lock for Mars Transit

Human exploration missions to Mars pose difficulties due to the significant waste that will be generated during transit, which will need to be carried along or disposed of in some fashion. Waste removal from the spacecraft decreases the spacecraft’s mass as well as the associated logistic items necessary for storing the waste. A mission propellant analysis was performed to highlight the mass benefits that may be accessed via waste removal. The propellant mass savings were determined for different waste removal rates (2.9 – 11.6 kg/day) with the highest removal rate leading to the greatest propellant savings of 7,785 kg for an 850-day round-trip mission. Due to these benefits, two methods for waste reduction were studied for the 850-day Mars mission: Trash-to-Gas (TtG) and physical jettison via a trash-lock. The trash-to-gas methods considered were combustion, steam reforming, and pyrolysis, which convert waste into ventable gases (e.g., CO2, CO, CH4, etc.). Combustion and steam reforming require a co-reactant (O2 and/or H2O). Therefore, additional processing units or integration with the spacecraft’s environmental control and life support system (ECLSS) are required to facilitate recycle of the pertinent species. In contrast, pyrolysis is a purely thermal degradation process, which can operate as a standalone system; however, a lower percentage of waste is gasified with pyrolysis. The study herein compares standalone TtG (e.g., Advanced Organic Waste Gasifier, Plasma Pyrolysis, etc.), integrated TtG-ECLSS (e.g., Orbital Syngas Commodity Augmentation Reactor, Incineration/Gasification, etc.), and physical jettison. Each system’s mass, volume, power, and cooling requirements were compared via an equivalent system mass (ESM) analysis to ascertain potentially promising technologies that can achieve efficient waste removal while minimizing their own spacecraft load. This study highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the different waste management technologies and provides recommendations on the promising technologies based on the ESM metric and propellant mass savings.
