Research of low cost wind generator rotors

A feasibility program determined that it would be possible to significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing wind generator rotors by making them of cast urethane. Several high modulus urethanes which were structurally tested were developed. A section of rotor was also cast and tested showing the excellent aerodynamic surface which results. A design analysis indicated that a cost reduction of almost ten to one can be achieved with a small weight increase to achieve the same structural integrity as expected of current rotor systems.

Strainrange partitioning behavior of the nickel-base superalloys, Rene' 80 and in 100

A study was made to assess the ability of the method of Strainrange Partitioning (SRP) to both correlate and predict high-temperature, low cycle fatigue lives of nickel base superalloys for gas turbine applications. The partitioned strainrange versus life relationships for uncoated Rene' 80 and cast IN 100 were also determined from the ductility normalized-Strainrange Partitioning equations. These were used to predict the cyclic lives of the baseline tests. The life predictability of the method was verified for cast IN 100 by applying the baseline results to the cyclic life prediction of a series of complex strain cycling tests with multiple hold periods at constant strain. It was concluded that the method of SRP can correlate and predict the cyclic lives of laboratory specimens of the nickel base superalloys evaluated in this program.

Low cost silicon solar array project silicon materials task: Establishment of the feasibility of a process capable of low-cost, high volume production of silane (step 1) and the pyrolysis of silane to semiconductor-grade silicon (step 2)

Extended operation of a small process-development unit routinely produced high quality silane in 97+% yield from dichlorosilane. The production rate was consistent with design loadings for the fractionating column and for the redistribution reactor. A glass fluid-bed reactor was constructed for room temperature operation. The behavior of a bed of silcon particles was observed as a function of various feedstocks, component configurations, and operating conditions. For operating modes other than spouting, the bed behaved in an erratic and unstable manner. A method was developed for casting molten silicon powder into crack-free solid pellets for process evaluation. The silicon powder was melted and cast into thin walled quartz tubes that sacrificially broke on cooling.

Comparison of two different raindrop disdrometers

Different types of impact sensors, used for the measurement of drop size distribution, are described and compared. All of them generate an electrical output which is to a first order a function of the velocity and mass of impacting drops within the size range of 0.25 to 5.0 mm. The disdrometers discussed include an active styrofoam disdrometer, a passive plexiglass sensor, and a cast epoxy disdrometer sensor. The sensors are calibrated by dropping water drops of known size on the sensor, and using an oscilloscope to measure peak amplitude. Similar response characteristics are observed for the active styrofoam disdrometer and the passive plexiglass and brass sensors. The cast epoxy impact sensor is noted to have a faster response and to be more sturdy than the styrofoam or plexiglass sensors.

Strainrange partitioning behavior of the nickel-base superalloys, Rene 80 and 100

A study has been made to assess the ability of the method of Strainrange Partitioning (SRP) to both correlate and predict high-temperature low-cycle fatigue lives of nickel-base superalloys for gas turbine applications. SRP is shown to correlate the cyclic lives of the baseline tests to within factors of nearly two. The partitioned strainrage versus life relationships for uncoated Rene 80 and cast IN 100 have also been determined from the ductility normalized-strainrange partitioning equations. These were used to predict the cyclic lives of the baseline tests. Predicted and observed cyclic lives agreed to within factors of nearly three. The life predictability of the method is also verified for cast IN 100 by applying the baseline results to the cyclic-life prediction of a series of complex strain-cycling tests with multiple hold periods at constant strain. It is concluded that the method of SRP can correlate and predict the cyclic lives of laboratory specimens of the nickel-base superalloys evaluated in this program.

Strainrange partitioning behavior of the nickel-base superalloys, Rene 80 and IN-100

A study was made to assess the ability of the method of strainrange partitioning (SRP) to both correlate and predict high temperature, low cycle fatigue lives of nickel-base superalloys for gas turbine applications. Baseline data from strain-controlled, low cycle fatigue tests were expressed in terms of the PP, PC, CP, and CC partitioned inelastic strainrange versus life relationships for coated and uncoated Rene' 80 at 1000 C, Gatorized (creep-formed)IN 100 at 760 C, and cast IN 100 at 925 C. The SRP is shown to correlate the cyclic lives of the baseline tests to within factors of nearly two. The partitioned strainrange versus life relationships for uncoated Rene' 80 and cast IN 100 were also determined from the ductility normalized-strainrange partitioning equations. These were used to predict the cyclic lives of the baseline tests. Predicted and observed cyclic lives agreed to within factors of nearly three.

The effect of surface oxide layer on the rate of hydrogen emission from aluminum and its alloys in a high vacuum

The influence of surface oxide layers on the kinetics of hydrogen emission at the high vacuum of 10 to the minus 8th power torr was investigated at temperatures from 20 to 450 C using samples of pure AB00 aluminum and the cast alloy AMg. Cast and deformed samples of AMts alloy were used to study the effect of oxide film thickness on the rate of hydrogen emission. Thermodynamic calculations of the reactions of the generation and dissociation of aluminum oxide show that degasification at elevated temperatures (up to 600 C) and high vacuum will not reduce the thickness of artificially-generated surface oxide layers on aluminum and its alloys.

Structures for hypersonic airbreathing tactical missiles

The studies to date were encouraging and indicated that materials were available or could be developed to satisfy scramjet requirements. Some of the more promising materials for the critical components were indicated. This information is summarized as follows : (1) radome - Slip cast fused silica is the current candidate, but others are being investigated. One shortcoming of slip cast fused silica is its susceptability to rain damage. (2) inlet leading edges - A refractory metal with a good oxidation protective coating will be required. Tantalum T222 with a Hafnia coating looks promising. (3) inlet ducts - An uninsulated refractory alloy will be required. Columbium F-85 was the best of those considered for the noncircular ducts. (4) external body - The external body temperatures are sufficiently low to permit the use of super alloys. (5) combustor and nozzle - The pyrolytic graphite/silicon carbide coating is very attractive for use in the combustor and nozzle areas.

Effect of grain orientation and coating on thermal fatigue resistance of a directionally solidified superalloy (MAR-M 247)

The effect of off-axis directionally solidified (DS) grain growth on thermal fatigue life of Mar-M 247 alloy was evaluated. Uncoated conventionally cast as well as DS wedge bars were cycled in a burner rig between 1070 C and room temperature. The longitudinal axis and leading edge of the specimen coincided. As the angle between the specimen longitudinal axis and growth axis increased, the thermal fatigue life decreased for both the uncoated and aluminide-coated bars. Life increases of about 50 cycles for the DS conditions were attributed to coating. The decrease in thermal fatigue life with increasing angle is primarily attributed to the increase in modulus of elasticity with increasing angle and not to the intersection of DS grain boundaries with the specimen leading edge. The thermal fatigue cracks were observed to be transgranular in the DS material. Limited tensile and stress-rupture properties of conventionally cast and off-axis DS Mar-M 247 alloy are also presented.

Low-cost directionally-solidified turbine blades, volume 1

A low cost process of manufacturing high stress rupture strength directionally-solidified high pressure turbine blades was successfully developed for the TFE731-3 Turbofan Engine. The basic processing parameters were established using MAR-M 247 and employing the exothermic directional-solidification process in trial castings of turbine blades. Nickel-based alloys were evaluated as directionally-solidified cast blades. A new turbine blade, disk, and associated components were then designed using previously determined material properties. Engine tests were run and the results were analyzed and compared to the originally established goals. The results showed that the stress rupture strength of exothermically heated, directionally-solidified MAR-M 247 turbine blades exceeded program objectives and that the performance and cost reduction goals were achieved.

Silicon Solar Cell Process Development, Fabrication and Analysis

The standard solar cells (2x2 cm) from the cast silicon (HEM) showed a maximum AMO efficiency of 10.1%. Cells from the low resistivity material (0.5 ohm-cm) showed lower performance than those of the high resistivity cast silicon (3 ohm-cm), an average efficiency 9.5% versus 7.6%. Maximum AMO efficiency of the standard solar cells from the EFG (RH) ribbons was about 7.5%. The solar cells from the controlled SiC, using the displaced die, showed more consistent and better performance than those of the uncontrolled SiC ribbons, an average efficiency of 6.6% versus 5.4%. The average AMO efficiency of the standard SOC solar cells were about 6%. These were large area solar cells (an average area of 15 sq cm). A maximum efficiency of 7.3% was obtained. The SOC solar cells showed both leakage and series resistance problems, leading to an average curve fill factor of about 60%.

The influence of structural response on sympathetic detonation

The role that a munition's structural response plays in the ignition process and the development of violent reactions and detonations is explored. The munition's structural response is identified as one of the factors that influences reaction violence. If the structural response of a round is known, this knowledge can be used to redstruce the probability that a large explosion would result from the sequential detonation of individual rounds within a large storage array. The response of an acceptor round was studied. The castings fail in the same manner regardless of whether or not there is a fill material present in the round. These failures are caused by stress waves which are transformed from compressive waves to tensile waves by reflection as the impact energy moves around the casting. Since these waves move in opposite directions around the projectile circumference and collide opposite the point of impact, very high tensile forces are developed which can crack the casing.

A 14-day ground-based hypokinesia study in nonhuman primates: A compilation of results

A 14 day ground based hypokinesia study with rhesus monkeys was conducted to determine if a spaceflight of similar duration might affect bone remodeling and calcium homeostatis. The monkeys were placed in total body casts and sacrificed either immediately upon decasting or 14 days after decasting. Changes in vertebral strength were noted and further deterioration of bone strength continued during the recovery phase. Resorption in the vertebrae increased dramatically while formation decreased. Cortical bone formation was impaired in the long bones. The immobilized animals showed a progressive decrease in total serum calcium which rebounded upon remobilization. Most mandibular parameters remained unchanged during casting except for retardation of osteon birth or maturation rate and density distribution of matrix and mineral moieties.

Sintered reaction bonded Si3N4 for the AGT 101 turbine rotor

The sintered reaction reaction bonded Si3N4 (SRBSN) process, with Y2O3 as a sintering aid, was selected for the fabrication of the AGT 101 turbine rotor. Experiments to determine the optimum Y2O3 composition of this system are discussed. The room temperature strength of the optimum material (RM-1) exceeds 700 MPa while the 1200 C strength exceeds 550 MPa. The slip casting fabrication technique employed for the AGT 101 simulated rotor is described. Rotors have been cast, nitrided and sintered. Densities exceeding 97% of theoretical (3.26 g/cc) have been obtained. Problems relating to sintering reproducibility, and the overall quality of the simulated rotors have been identified.

Protein synthesis rates in atrophied gastrocnemius muscles after limb immobilization

Noting that protein synthesis declines in the gastrocnemius 6 hr after immobilization, the study sought to detect an increase of protein synthesis when the limb was freed, and to examine the effects of exercise on the rate of increase. Rats were used as subjects, with their hind legs in plaster of Paris in plantar flexion to eliminate strain on the gastrocnemius. Periods of immobilization were varied and samples of blood from the muscle were taken to track protein synthesis rates for different groups in immobilization and exercise regimens (running and weightlifting). Synthesis rates declined 3.6% during time in the cast, then increased 6.3%/day after the casts were removed. Both running and weightlifting were found to increase the fractional rate of protein formation in the gastrocnemius muscle when compared with contralateral muscles that were not exercised and were used as controls, suggesting that the mechanism controlling protein synthesis in skeletal muscles is rapidly responsive to changes in muscular contractile activity.

Poly/vinyl alcohol/ membranes for reverse osmosis

A description is presented of the results of studies of the water and salt transport properties of PVA membranes, taking into account radiation crosslinked PVA membranes, diffusive salt permeability through PVA membranes, and heat treated PVA membranes. The experimental findings support an occurrence of independent water, and salt permeation processes. It is suggested that the salt permeation is governed by a solution-diffusion transport mechanism. The preparation of thin skinned, asymmetric PVA membranes is also discussed. The employed method has a certain similarity to the classical phase inversion method, which is widely applied in the casting of asymmetric reverse osmosis membranes. Instead of using a gelling bath composed of a nonsolvent for the membrane material and miscible with the solvent from which the membrane is cast, a 'complexing' bath is used, which is a solution of a complexing agent in water.

Oxidation and hot corrosion of coated and bare oxide dispersion strengthened superalloy MA-755E

Cyclic hot corrosion and oxidation of an experimental oxide dispersion strengthened (ODS) superalloy MA-755E were conducted in a hot gas stream at Mach 0.3. The response of the ODS alloy, bare or with protective coatings, was similar to that of a conventional cast alloy, IN-792, in hot corrosion at 900 C. However, during oxidation at 1100 and 1150 C the ODS alloy differed from the cast alloy by developing a greater amount of subsurface porosity. Compared with a diffused aluminide coating, an electron beam vapor deposited NiCrAlY coating offered superior oxidation protection and decreased porosity formation. In additional testing, the tendency to form porosity was associated with the large grains of recrystallized powder metallurgy alloys but was independent of the presence of an oxide dispersion.
