MARVEL Decommissioning Plan

The purpose of this document is to update and formally document decommissioning plans for the Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) microreactor after two years of operational testing. The operational testing consists of 3 continuous days of operation followed by 4 days of non-operation. This plan is also based on the assumption that all MARVEL fuel will be transported to long-term intermediate storage at the CPP-603 used fuel storage facility, sodium-potassium (NaK) coolant can be disposed as Class B radioactive waste and that the balance of the reactor primary components can be disposed of at an available disposal facility.

Lessons Learned from MARVEL Initial Fabrication and Testing

The Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) project is intended to be amongst the first U.S. advanced reactor demonstrations in four decades. By virtue of being sponsored directly by the U.S. Department of Energy, the reactor is intended to benefit the broader nuclear community by exercising design processes, safety reviews, and supply chains. This project is intent on publicly documenting key lessons learned along the way toward demonstration. Building on a 2024 report that focused on lessons learned from the design and project management phase, this 2025 edition focuses on findings from the MARVEL guard vessel fabrication and primary coolant apparatus test (PCAT) testing.

STARTR: An Open-Source MARVEL model for the NRIC Virtual Test Bed [Poster]

The National Reactor Innovation Center (NRIC) seeks to improve the understanding of microreactor physics in industry and academia through the development of a Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) reactor-based model, published on the Virtual Test Bed (VTB). To achieve this goal, the Sodium-cooled Thermal-spectrum Advanced Research Test Reactor (STARTR) model was built using publicly available MARVEL specifications where possible and approximations where applicable, and was optimized for fast runtimes for researchers to receive rapid simulation feedback. STARTR will fill a gap between stakeholder interest and available models, as the first Sodium-cooled Thermal Reactor (STR) hosted on the VTB with baseline performance sanctioned by INL. This project involved the definition of all materials used in the reactor, geometry and all reactor subcomponents, and assertion of tallies and simulation settings within OpenMC 0.13.3. This poster details a small subset of the overall reactor physics testing: the two-dimensional power peaking factors and the flux energy spectrum, as well as plots of the created geometry. Future work includes code-to-code verification between the OpenMC-based model and a separately designed MCNP 6.2-based model.

Equipment Procurement and Final Design for the MARVEL High-Grade Heat Extraction System (HGHES)

This summer I worked on the design of a high-grade heat extraction system (HGHES) of the MARVEL Project. The MARVEL project at INL is a first-of-a-kind terrestrial microreactor to help provide a test platform to demonstrate the use of a microreactor to end customers and enable technology developers to test enabling microreactor technologies with a functional nuclear reactor. One of the project's main requirements is the reactors’ ability to deliver high-grade thermal power to end users, both for industrial and commercial use. The project required communication with multiple vendors for custom-made equipment, working with a high-temperature and high-pressure helium coolant system, and research of a Thermal Storage Unit (TSU).

The Cost Drivers and The Most Time-Consuming Activities of the MARVEL Microreactor Project

This study aims to identify what drives cost and what project activities are the most time consuming within a microreactor project such as MARVEL. Identifying these cost and time drivers is necessary since nuclear projects are vulnerable to schedule delays and cost increases. This work also paves the way for possible cost reductions, decreasing the MARVEL levelized cost of energy and reducing the microreactors' construction time which in turn leads to a lower cost of interest during construction

ECAR-5139 MARVEL Radiological Source Term

As part of the Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation Project (MARVEL) design effort, a preliminary end of life reactor fuel radiological source term is calculated in support of the MARVEL preliminary hazard evaluation. The source term calculation assumes a two-year uninterrupted operating life at a power of about 111 kW for a total energy of 7,000,000 MJ. A final source term for the final hazard evaluation will need to be generated or an evaluation performed to determine the applicability of the source term documented here for use in the final hazard evaluation.

Progress toward the development of a high-fidelity neutronic \model of MARVEL using Griffin

The Microreactor Applications Research Validation and Evaluation (MARVEL) is a 100 kWth microreactor envisioned to start operations at Idaho National Laboratory (INL) in early 2025. This paper is focused on the development of a high-fidelity neutronic model of the MARVEL reactor using Griffin. In particular, the step-by-step verification procedure against Serpent reference calculations is here reported. In this version of the paper, the comparison is only performed in terms of effective multiplication factor, root mean square percentage error (RMSPE) of the pin power, and maximum error for pin-wise power.

MRP Review - MARVEL I&C Overview

MARVEL I&C Overview - The design and status of MARVEL I&C is discussed, along with the safety foundations that constrain and enable the design. Included are outlines of the safety-related I&C components, the non-safety-related I&C components, and the additional elements to be added after dry criticality in preparation for full power operations. Finding the path to remote operations will also be briefly discussed.

ECAR-6332 Rev 3 RELAP5-3D Thermal-Hydraulic Analysis of MARVEL Microreactor - Final Design

This document reports the thermal hydraulic analyses results for the MARVEL microreactor, final design, including dry criticality, normal operation, operational transients and a set of very-low probability transients caused by accident conditions. The ultimate scope of this document is to demonstrate the MARVEL microreactor thermal hydraulic performances and its inherent safety. First, the list of the operational and accidental transients with the corresponding acceptance criteria are recalled. Then, details of the final design, the key input parameters, the assumptions, and the methodology used for performing the deterministic safety analyses are presented. Finally, the analyses results are provided, demonstrating the satisfaction of the corresponding acceptance criteria.

SPC-2918 Rev 0 MARVEL Test Loop Flowmeters

This specification contains the requirements for the design, manufacture, testing, and delivery of magnetic flowmeters to be installed on the MARVEL Primary Coolant Apparatus Test (PCAT) system. The PCAT system is a heated test loop which will be used to simulate the coolant system of a proposed sodium or NaK cooled microreactor. The system has four identical cooling loops. Installation of flowmeters on all four loops is anticipated at this time, however, the number of flowmeters may be reduced by the Project. Note that the number of flowmeters described herein is not a commitment to a particular number of procured units. The number of flowmeter units procured shall be identified on the purchase order. The MARVEL reactor is still under design, so the PCAT flowmeter design may not be directly transferrable to the reactor. It is intended that the design and development effort for the PCAT flowmeters be leveraged to the extent practical for the reactor flowmeter design.
