CFD Simulation of the Dosing Behavior within the Atomic Layer Deposition Feeding System

The effective operation of atomic layer deposition (ALD) feeding system is the premise of realizing specific ALD processes. In the present work, a detailed computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the feeding system has been developed and validated, which accounts for the roles of ALD valves and manifolds. A numerical simulation of the compressible fluid flow and heat/mass transfer within the feeding system was conducted. The dosing amounts and the spatiotemporal distributions of the precursors can be accurately predicted using the CFD model, as validated by experimental results. Different precursors, operating conditions, and structures of the feeding system were simulated and analyzed to examine the operating flexibility of the feeding system. The simulation results can be adopted as the upstream boundary conditions for simulations of the ALD process in the reaction chamber. The substrate-scale simulation indicates that the effect of the feeding system on the film deposition is highly related to the surface kinetics of ALD. The present work can serve as a guide for the development and optimization of different ALD-based processes via proper operation and even the design of the feeding system.

Photosynthetic capacity is reduced by warming but unaffected by elevated CO2 in seedlings of five boreal tree species

Abstract Increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations fuel global warming, with boreal regions warming at a faster rate than many other areas. Boreal forests are an important component of the global carbon cycle, yet we have little data on photosynthetic responses of boreal trees to elevated CO2 (EC) and warming. We grew seedlings of 5 widespread North American boreal tree species (from Betula, Larix, Picea, and Pinus) under current (410 ppm) or elevated (750 ppm) CO2 and either ambient (+0 °C) or increased (+4 °C or +8 °C) temperature, then measured photosynthetic traits over a range of leaf temperatures. Our results were generally consistent across species: photosynthetic capacity (maximum rates of Rubisco carboxylation, Vcmax, and electron transport, Jmax) was unaffected by EC but decreased under +8 °C warming. Accordingly, net photosynthesis measured at the growth CO2 concentration (Agrowth) was reduced under warming and increased under EC. The thermal optimum for Agrowth (ToptA) increased by ∼1.8 °C with EC but increased with warming in only two species. In contrast, the activation energies and thermal optima for Vcmax and Jmax, which are used to estimate photosynthesis in Earth System Models, were unaffected by growth environment. There were a few interactions between growth, CO2, and warming. These results suggest increased photosynthesis of widespread boreal tree species under EC may be offset by future reductions in photosynthetic capacity related to warming. We also show that the temperature sensitivities of parameters used to estimate global photosynthesis in large-scale models are generally unaffected by simulated climate change in these species.

Performance of AEA 80 Ah Battery Under GEO Profile

To date completed three Solar Dynamic Observatory SDO real-time eclipse seasons. Sony 18650HC has a low rate of capacity fade under GEO cycling regime. Real time test results correlate with accelerated GEO lifetest data and AEA capacity fade prediction tool. This data, together with other AEA test data, justify the SDO Project decision to baseline Lithium-Ion chemistry for the spacecraft battery.

Disorder-induced spin-cluster magnetism in a doped kagome spin liquid candidate

The search for new quantum spin liquid materials relies on systems with strong frustration such as spins on an ideal kagome lattice. However, lattice imperfections can have substantial effects which are as yet not well understood. In recent work, the two-dimensional kagome system YCu 3 ⁢(OH) 6 ⁢[(Cl 𝑥 ⁢Br (1−𝑥) ) 3−𝑦 ⁢(OH) 𝑦 ] has emerged as a leading candidate hosting a Dirac spin liquid which appears to survive at least for 𝑥 < 0.4, associated with alternating-bond-hexagon (ABH) disorder. Here in magnetic samples with 𝑥 = 0.58, 𝑦 = 0.1 we report unusual in-plane ferromagnetic canting (FM) of the in-plane antiferromagnet (AFM), with an unusually wide regime of short-ranged order, and propose theoretical models to explain this behavior. First, we show that Kitaev-type exchanges naturally arise on the kagome lattice to second order in the known Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchanges, and that these interactions can produce the unusual in-plane FM canting from antichiral AFM. Second, we propose a phenomenological model of weakly FM-canted spin clusters to describe the short-ranged regime and analyze quantum fluctuations in an ABH toy model to show how ABH disorder can stabilize this regime. Here, the combination of experimental observation and theory suggests that kagome-Kitaev interactions and ABH disorder are necessary for describing the magnetic fluctuations in this family of materials, with potential implications for the proposed proximate spin liquid phase.

High-density Boron Nitride Nanotube Composites via Surfactant-stabilized Lyotropic Liquid Crystals for Enhanced Space Radiation Shielding

Despite significant technological advancements in space exploration, human space travel and colonization remain limited by the health risks associated with space radiation. Boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) have been proposed as an advanced material for space applications due to their high specific strength and efficient radiation shielding capabilities. However, the practical implementation of BNNTs has been slow, primarily due to technological challenges in fabricating structural materials incorporating BNNTs. In this study, a method is presented for fabricating high-density BNNT films that are mechanically robust, exhibit high thermal conductivity, and effectively attenuate space radiation. The key advancement enabling high-density BNNT films is the successful preparation of BNNT liquid crystals (LCs), achieved through the strategic use of a commercial dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid surfactant. This surfactant ensures exceptional BNNT stability in aqueous dispersion, even at concentrations exceeding the LC phase transition threshold. Simulations, estimating the equivalent radiation dose to the human body in space, indicate that a high-density BNNT film with a surface density of 50 g cm−2 reduces the total dose equivalent rate by 56% compared to zero shielding. This enhancement would allow astronauts to extend their mission duration on the lunar surface by a factor of two.

HRMS Sky Survey Wideband Feed System Design for DSS 24 Beam Waveguide Antenna

The High-Resolution Microwave Survey (HRMS) Sky Survey project will be implemented on the DSS 24 beam waveguide (BWG) antenna over the frequency range of 2.86 to 10 GHz. Two wideband, ring-loaded, corrugated feed horns were designed to cover this range. The horns match the frequency-dependent gain requirements for the DSS 24 BWG system. The performance of the feed horns and the calculated system performance of DSS 24 are presented.

The Development of A Heated-Hybrid Generated Gas Pressurization System for Propellant Tanks

One of the most important considerations in the design of liquid fueled rockets is the method utilized to transfer the propellants from the propellant tanks to the rocket engine. Use of storable liquid propellant propulsion systems, particularly those employing hydrazine as a fuel, facilitates the attractive possibility of employing the monopropellant virtues of the fuel in order to generate gases for pressurization of the propellant tanks.

Topographic effects on reflected acoustic waves from the OSIRIS-REx reentry observed from stratospheric balloons

During long-distance sound propagation in planetary atmospheres, acoustic waves may reflect off the air/surface interface one or more times. For low sound frequencies and flat interfaces, the incident and reflected wave tend to be nearly identical. However, this may not be the case when the downgoing acoustic wave encounters topography. Here, we describe a set of direct and reflected acoustic signals recorded on free-flying balloons during the hypersonic entry of the OSIRIS-REx sample return capsule (SRC). In two of the three cases presented here, an impulsive reflected arrival similar in form to the direct sonic boom of the SRC is observed, followed by a diffuse coda. In contrast, one of the floating stations lacked an impulsive reflection entirely, with only the coda present. We use full waveform modeling to show how reflection in the presence of complex topography can explain coda seen in all three examples as well as the lack of impulsive arrival on the third. Our results indicate that the complex signals often observed in long range acoustic propagation could be due, in part, to interactions with topography during transmission.

Implementation of Self-Align Local Poly Interconnection on 0.25 Micron Flash Memory

For ETOX Flash technology. the self-aligned source module plays a critical role in minimizing cell size. For advanced Flash technology using the shallow-trench isolation (STI) scheme, however, it is difficult to form a stable source line. The Flash process in this experiment features an ETOX structure and with SIN spacer. Poly-Si (implanted poly) is used as the local interconnection material connecting the source line and was successfully implemented in the ETOX flash array in this paper.

Bifurcation of Rotating Liquid Drops: Results From USML-1 Experiments in Space

Experiments on rotational bifurcation of liquid drops, in which the drops were levitated and spun using acoustic fields in a low-gravity environment, were conducted during the first United States Microgravity Laboratory (USML-1) Space Shuttle flight. The experiments have successfully resolved the discrepancies existing between the previous experimental results and the theoretical predictions. In the case of a spherical drop, for which theory exists, the results agree well with the predictions. In the case of flattened drops, the experiments have established a family of curves, with the spherical drop as the limiting case.
