CIE Curriculum Guide (V.2.0)

The Cyber-Informed Engineering (CIE) Curriculum Guide offers a comprehensive framework, guidance, and resources for integrating CIE into university-level engineering programs and related educational activities. The primary goal is to help educators adopt CIE principles into their teaching to produce future engineers and technicians who understand digital risks in modern engineered systems, thereby addressing the nation’s infrastructure resilience needs. This guide outlines practical integration examples, links to resources to accelerate CIE adoption, and shares insights from partner academic institutions on various implementation strategies. CIE is a framework for embedding engineered controls that mitigate the impact of cyber-attacks in any cyber-physical system used in critical energy infrastructure and other sectors. Developed by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response (CESER), the National Cyber-Informed Engineering Strategy emphasizes embedding CIE into formal education, training, and credentialing. This guide supports this strategic objective by providing examples of integrating CIE concepts into engineering curricula, from class activities to new courses and certificate programs. The importance of educating cyber-informed engineers is underscored by the evolving cybersecurity threats facing engineered systems. As industrial control systems (ICS) increasingly incorporate digital technologies, the responsibility for security extends to both cyber professionals and engineers. CIE addresses critical gaps in designing and protecting physical systems with digital components against cyber risks, ensuring engineers consider digital risk throughout the engineering design lifecycle. Currently, engineering education does not routinely include cyber-informed principles, highlighting a gap in addressing modern engineering system risks. This guide advocates for updating engineering curricula to include digital risk management as a fundamental element. By doing so, future engineers will be equipped to design resilient systems that mitigate digital risks from the outset. Through this guide, engineering faculty can integrate CIE into their curricula, bridging the gap between digital risk and engineering. This approach prepares a cyber-informed workforce capable of safeguarding the cyber-physical systems crucial to national security and public welfare. By embedding CIE into education and training, institutions can produce engineers and technicians who can effectively mitigate cyber impacts throughout the engineering design lifecycle, resulting in more secure critical infrastructures.

How to design a focusing guide: The large moderator case1

As continuously shaped super-mirrors are becoming available, the conceptual design of focusing guides should explore a wider range of possibilities to accomplish an efficient neutron beam extraction. Starting from a desired phase-space volume at the sample position and using an upstream ray-tracing approach, the acceptance diagram of any focusing guide can be calculated at the moderator position. To ensure high brilliance transfer and homogeneous coverage, the acceptance diagram should be fully included in the neutron source emission phase-space volume. Following this idea, the guide system can be scaled into dimensionless geometric figures that convey performance limits for a desired cross-section reduction. Moreover, if we impose a monotonic increase of the reflection angle with divergence angle at the sample position, the shape of the mirror is analytically determined. This approach was applied in the design of a focusing guide for SNAP instrument at SNS, at ORNL, USA. The results of McStas simulations are presented with different options included. Our approach facilitates finding an optimal solution for connecting multiple guide pieces to avoid excessive losses and ensure a homogeneous phase space coverage.

Guided cold atom inertial sensors with membrane integrated photonics on atom trap integrated platforms

A guided cold-atom inertial sensor system comprises an atom trap integrated platform, a laser system, a magnetic field system, a control system, and a computing system. The laser system and magnetic field system are adapted to form a magneto-optical trap (MOT) about a suspended waveguide of the atom trap integrated platform made of membrane integrated photonics. After loading cold atoms from a MOT, the photonic atom trap integrated platform generates one-dimensional guided atoms with an evanescent field optical dipole trap (EF-ODT) along the optical waveguide to create guided atomic accelerometers/gyroscopes. Motion of atomic wavepackets in a superposition state is created along the guided atom geometry by way of state-dependent momentum kicks. The light-pulse sequence of guided atom interferometry splits, redirects, and recombines atomic wavepackets, which allows measurement of atom interference fringes sensitive to inertial forces via a probe laser.

Theory Guided Fine‐Tune of Strain Effects in Pt Ternary Alloy via Rare Earth Templating: Achieving High Performance PEMFCs Catalysts

The sluggish kinetics and insufficient durability of platinum-based catalysts remain crucial barriers limiting proton-exchange-membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) deployment. Here, we report a theory-guided synthesis combined with rare-earth templating to realize a previously inaccessible Pt 5 Co-like phase with tailored atomic-scale strain. Guided by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we identified that a Pt 5 Co-like sublayer can induce a unique mild compressive strain (−1.24%) to the Pt(111) shell and an optimal *OH binding energy shift (ΔE ≈ 0.11 eV). This shift positions the alloy catalyst near the apex of the oxygen reduction reaction activity volcano. This prediction guided the synthesis of ternary alloy Pt 5 (Ce)Co@Pt multilayer nanoparticles, featuring a Ce-stabilized core, a Pt 5 Co-like sublayer, and a Pt-rich shell. This catalyst demonstrates both exceptionally high activity and durability, achieving a mass activity of 2.6 A∙mg Pt −1 in rotating disk electrode testing. In fuel cell membrane electrode assembly tests, Pt 5 (Ce)Co@Pt achieves a current density of 1.9 A∙cm −2 at 0.7 V under heavy-duty vehicle conditions. Remarkably, it maintains 1.2 A∙cm −2 after 1 80 000 AST cycles, doubling the U.S. DOE 2025 target. This work demonstrates a rational design strategy that DFT-guided strain engineering integrates with rare-earth templating to advance Pt-based catalysts for fuel cell applications.

In situ characterization of the biological performance of a Francis turbine retrofitted with a modular guide vane

There are two strategies to lower overall project costs to an extent that will make many potential sustainable hydropower sites economically viable: (1) design standardized/modular components; (2) use advanced tools to reduce environmental evaluation costs. In this study an autonomous sensor device (Sensor Fish) was used to study a Francis turbine retrofitted with a modular guide vane. The median nadir pressures measured were 74.7, 66.6, and 56.6 kPaA for 90-, 190-, and 380-kW operating conditions respectively. These nadir pressures were compared to other Francis turbines studied using Sensor Fish and were found to be within the same range. The proportion of Sensor Fish releases with severe acceleration events (acceleration = 95G) was also investigated. The proportion ranged from 73 to 80% (runner region), 50 to 64% (guide vane region), and 9 to 28% (draft tube region), which was within the range of the other turbines used for comparison. The Sensor Fish testing that was conducted at Hurley Dam demonstrates that the modular guide vane that was retrofitted to the existing Francis turbine is potentially a suitable replacement that can provide biological performance similar to the guide vane used with other existing Francis turbines, but with the benefit of reduced fabrication costs.

Improved guided-wave acoustic defect detection and localization in pipes under varying temperature conditions using deep learning

Early defect detection in pipelines is critical across industries, particularly in the oil and gas sector, where failures result in significant maintenance costs and operational disruptions. Acoustic guided-wave techniques are widely used for nondestructive evaluation of pipeline defects due to their long-distance propagation capability. However, environmental variations, sensitivity limitations, and complex signal interpretation challenges limit the effectiveness of traditional signal processing approaches with guided-wave signals. Recent advances in deep learning methods have demonstrated remarkable success in solving complex real-world problems in many fields. In particular, deep-learning-based signal processing holds substantial promise to overcome limitations and challenges of conventional signal processing. This study presents a deep learning framework for pipeline inspection using acoustic guided-wave signals under temperature varying environments. The proposed framework employs a dual-path one-dimensional convolutional autoencoder that combines defect detection, localization, and temperature prediction functions. The proposed system utilizes multi-mode and broadband acoustic waves with an optimized number of sensors that provide high accuracy while retaining practical simplicity. Experimental validation is performed on a carbon steel pipe. The results indicate exceptional defect detection accuracy and precise defect localization with a mean absolute error of 66 mm. The proposed technique also predicts the effective average temperature of the pipe with a mean absolute error of 0.2°C. Comparative analysis shows superior performance of the proposed method over a traditional method previously developed by the authors' team. These results highlight the potential of integrating deep learning methods into guided-wave pipeline inspection systems to improve reliability under varying environmental conditions.

Calculation of collisionless pitch-angle scattering of runaway electrons with synchrotron radiation via high-order guiding-centre equation

Recently, the collisionless pitch-angle scattering for relativistic runaway electrons (REs) in toroidal geometries such as tokamaks was discovered through a full orbit simulation approach (Liu et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 56, 2016, p. 064002), and it was then theoretically investigated that a new expression for the magnetic moment, including the second-order corrections, could essentially reproduce the so-called collisionless pitch-angle scattering process (Liu et al., Nucl. Fusion, vol. 58, 2018, p. 106018). In this paper, with synchrotron radiation, extensive numerical verification of the validity of the high-order guiding-centre theory is given for simulations involving REs by incorporating such an expression for the magnetic moment into our particle tracing code. A high-order guiding-centre simulation approach with synchrotron radiation (HGSA) is applied. Synchrotron radiation plays an essential role in the life cycle of REs. The energy of REs first increases and then becomes saturated until the electric field acceleration is balanced by the radiation dissipation. Unfortunately, the process cannot be simulated accurately with the standard guiding-centre model, i.e. the first-order guiding-centre model. Remarkably, it is found that the HGSA can effectively produce the fundamental process of REs. Since the time scale of the energy saturation of REs is close to seconds, the computational cost becomes significant. In order to save costs, it is necessary to estimate the time of energy saturation. An analytical estimate is derived for the time it takes for synchrotron drag to balance an accelerating electric field and the provided formula has been numerically verified. Finally, test calculations reveal that HGSA is favourable for exploiting the dynamics of REs in tokamak plasmas.

The engineered single guide RNA structure as a biomarker for gene-editing reagent exposure

Abstract CRISPR arrays and CRISPR-associated (Cas) proteins comprise a prevalent adaptive immune system in bacteria and archaea. These systems defend against exogenous parasitic mobile genetic elements. The adaption of single effector CRISPR-Cas systems has massively facilitated gene-editing due to the reprogrammable guide RNA. The guide RNA affords little priming space for conventional PCR-based nucleic acid tests without foreknowledge of the spacer sequence. Further impeding detection of gene-editor exposure, these systems are derived from human microflora and pathogens ( Staphylococcus pyogenes , Streptococcus aureus , etc.) that contaminate human patient samples. The single guide RNA—formed from the CRISPR RNA (crRNA) and transactivating RNA (tracrRNA)—harbors a variable tetraloop sequence between the two RNA segments, complicating PCR assays. Identical single effector Cas proteins are used for gene-editing and naturally by bacteria. Antibodies raised against these Cas proteins are unable to distinguish CRISPR-Cas gene-editors from bacterial contaminant. To overcome the high potential for false positives, we have developed a DNA displacement assay to specifically detect gene-editors. We leveraged the single guide RNA structure as an engineered moiety for gene-editor exposure that does not cross-react with bacterial CRISPRs. Our assay has been validated for five common CRISPR systems and functions in complex sample matrices.
