Integrated control and health monitoring capacitive displacement sensor development task. Orbit transfer rocket engine technology program

The development of a miniature multifunction turbomachinery shaft displacement sensor using state-of-the-art non-contract capacitive sensing technology is described. Axial displacement, radial displacement, and speed are sensed using a single probe within the envelope normally required for a single function. A survey of displacement sensing technology is summarized including inductive, capacitive, optical and ultrasonic techniques. The design and operation of an experimental triple function sensor is described. Test results are included showing calibration tests and simultaneous dynamic testing of multiple functions. Recommendations for design changes are made to improve low temperature performance, reliability, and for design of a flight type signal conditioning unit.

Double-driven shield capacitive type proximity sensor

A capacity type proximity sensor comprised of a capacitance type sensor, a capacitance type reference, and two independent and mutually opposing driven shields respectively adjacent to the sensor and reference and which are coupled in an electrical bridge circuit configuration and driven by a single frequency crystal controlled oscillator is presented. The bridge circuit additionally includes a pair of fixed electrical impedance elements which form adjacent arms of the bridge and which comprise either a pair of precision resistances or capacitors. Detection of bridge unbalance provides an indication of the mutual proximity between an object and the sensor. Drift compensation is also utilized to improve performance and thus increase sensor range and sensitivity.

Wireless Fluid Level Measuring System

A level-sensing probe positioned in a tank is divided into sections with each section including (i) a fluid-level capacitive sensor disposed along the length thereof, (ii) an inductor electrically coupled to the capacitive sensor, (iii) a sensor antenna positioned for inductive coupling to the inductor, and (iv) an electrical conductor coupled to the sensor antenna. An electrically non-conductive housing accessible from a position outside of the tank houses antennas arrayed in a pattern. Each antenna is electrically coupled to the electrical conductor from a corresponding one of the sections. A magnetic field response recorder has a measurement head with transceiving antennas arrayed therein to correspond to the pattern of the housing's antennas. When a measurement is to be taken, the measurement head is mechanically coupled to the housing so that each housing antenna is substantially aligned with a specific one of the transceiving antennas.

Linear capacitive displacement sensor with frequency readout

A simple, inherently linear technique for measuring changes in the separation of the mirrors of an optical cavity is reported. The capacitor, made up of the reflective metallic coatings, is part of a feedback loop which adjusts the frequency of an oscillator to be proportional to the mirror separation. A linearity of 0.2 percent full scale was achieved for separations up to 0.5 mm with a resolution of 10 nm.

Development of an Additively Manufactured Capacitive Humidity Sensor for the International Space Station

The ability to measure humidity on the International Space Station and other long-duration spaceflight missions is a crucial part of the onboard systems. For example, the Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS) needs to know the amount of humidity in the air to make decisions about whether it should spend power to run the dehumidifier systems to attempt to reclaim that water. Other issues can arise if the humidity reaches too high of levels and condensation builds up on electrical components. With that in mind, it is vital that the spacecraft keeps spare sensors on board or has the ability to manufacture new sensors on demand. An additively manufactured sensor would be additionally beneficial because it would save space onboard that would normally be taken up by spares, save money from costly resupply missions, and allow the sensor to be constantly updated with the most effective design. This Technical Memorandum outlines a development process carried out to design, manufacture, and test an additively manufactured humidity sensor.

Propellant Mass Gauging in a Spherical Tank under Micro-Gravity Conditions Using Capacitance Plate Arrays and Machine Learning

Propellant mass gauging under micro-gravity conditions is a challenging task due to the unpredictable position and shape of the fuel body inside the tank. Micro-gravity conditions are common for orbiting satellites and rockets that operate on limited fuel supplies. Capacitance sensors have been investigated for this task in recent years; however, the effect of various positions and shapes of the fuel body is not analyzed in detail. In this paper, we investigate this with various fill types, such as annular, core-annular, and stratified fills at different positions. We compare the performance among several curve-fitting-based approaches and a machine-learning-based approach, the latter of which offers superior performance in estimating the fuel content.

Capacitive skin characterization

NASA is currently involved in research that utilizes a capacitive sensor that is used for proximity detection of objects. This sensor is sensitive to conductive and dielectric materials including metal objects and humans. The range of the sensor has been found to be about twelve inches. It is the goal of this research project to further characterize the sensor so that it can be tailored to specific requirements. The characterization of the sensor should be with respect to shield size, sensor size, object size, and object distance. The method of finite elements to calculate the capacitance of the sensor while varying different parameters was used. Each of the parameters was varied in turn, often by selecting data points from different runs. The plotted results are shown and an apparent functionality developed for each.

Two-Phase Quality/Flow Meter

A quality and/or flow meter employs a capacitance probe assembly for measuring the dielectric constant of flow stream, particularly a two-phase flow stream including liquid and gas components.ne dielectric constant of the flow stream varies depending upon the volume ratios of its liquid and gas components, and capacitance measurements can therefore be employed to calculate the quality of the flow, which is defined as the volume ratio of liquid in the flow to the total volume ratio of gas and liquid in the flow. By using two spaced capacitance sensors, and cross-correlating the time varying capacitance values of each, the velocity of the flow stream can also be determined. A microcontroller-based processing circuit is employed to measure the capacitance of the probe sensors. The circuit employs high speed timer and counter circuits to provide a high resolution measurement of the time interval required to charge each capacitor in the probe assembly. In this manner, a high resolution, noise resistant, digital representation of each of capacitance value is obtained without the need for a high resolution A/D converter, or a high frequency oscillator circuit. One embodiment of the probe assembly employs a capacitor with two ground plates which provide symmetry to insure that accurate measurements are made thereby.

L-C Measurement Acquisition Method for Aerospace Systems

This paper describes a measurement acquisition method for aerospace systems that eliminates the need for sensors to have physical connection to a power source (i.e., no lead wires) or to data acquisition equipment. Furthermore, the method does not require the sensors to be in proximity to any form of acquisition hardware. Multiple sensors can be interrogated using this method. The sensors consist of a capacitor, C(p), whose capacitance changes with changes to a physical property, p, electrically connected to an inductor, L. The method uses an antenna to broadcast electromagnetic energy that electrically excites one or more inductive-capacitive sensors via Faraday induction. This method facilitates measurements that were not previously possible because there was no practical means of providing power and data acquisition electrical connections to a sensor. Unlike traditional sensors, which measure only a single physical property, the manner in which the sensing element is interrogated simultaneously allows measurement of at least two unrelated physical properties (e.g., displacement rate and fluid level) by using each constituent of the L-C element. The key to using the method for aerospace applications is to increase the distance between the L-C elements and interrogating antenna; develop all key components to be non-obtrusive and to develop sensing elements that can easily be implemented. Techniques that have resulted in increased distance between antenna and sensor will be presented. Fluid-level measurements and pressure measurements using the acquisition method are demonstrated in the paper.

The Chilled-Mirror Humidity Sensor: Improved Radiosonde Measurements

Chilled-mirror humidity sensor technology recently was adapted for use with the VIZ radiosonde. The principle of the chilled-mirror operation is to lower its temperature until dew forms on the mirror, at that point the dew point temperature is noted and the mirror is then heated to evaporate the moisture. The cycle is repeated. Research conducted from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility has provided comparisons between the chilled-mirror sensor and the carbon hygristor of VIZ, and the capacitive sensors of AIR Inc. and Vaisala Co. We believe the chilled-mirror sensor is accurate and would serve as a reference standard for evaluating operational radiosonde relative humidity sensors. Thus, differences seen in the comparisons are beginning to furnish insight into developing better humidity sensors. We discuss these comparison results as well as reproducibility results from a dual chilled-mirror measurement.

Steering capaciflector sensor

A capacitive type proximity sensor having substantial range and sensitivity between a machine and an intruding object in the immediate vicinity of the machine and having a steerable sensing field has an outer electrical conductor on the machine forming one electrode of a sensor capacitor, the other electrode is the object. The outer conductor is a thin sheet of conductive material with a pair (or more) of intermediate electrical conductors located between the outer conductor and the machine. The pair of intermediate electrical conductors are in close proximity to each other and together form a surface having a size substantially larger than the outer conductor to act as a shield for reducing the parasitic capacitance between the outer conductor and the machine and to steer the sensor field. The pair of intermediate conductors are thin sheets of conductive material substantially wider than the first conductor. The outer and pair of intermediate conductors are attached to a surface on the machine in electrical isolation and with no gaps between the conductors and no gap between the surface and the pair of intermediate conductors. The outer and pair of intermediate conductors are also in conformance with each other and the surface of the machine, and the surface of the machine acts as a ground plane. Variable gain voltage follower circuits are used for coupling, in phase, the instantaneous voltage at the outer electrical conductor to the pair of intermediate electrical conductors and a signal generator is coupled to the outer conductor and is responsive to the capacitance of the sensor capacitor for generating a control signal to the machine.

Progress Toward a Bulk Micromachined Tunneling Tip Microaccelerometer

Ultrasensitive accelerometers are needed for microgravity measurement of orbital drag and active isolation systems. We have designed an accelerometer capable of measuring accelerations of the order of 10(i) g. A tunneling tip sensor can be used as a position sensor with a potential performance advantage of two orders of magnitude over capacitive sensors. In this paper, we disclose our progress in the fabrication and measurement of a bulk microaccelerometer which employs a tunneling tip. Fully assembled accelerometers consisting of four separate die have been fabricated. The device employs a unique folded spring system with a low spring constant. To protect the tunneling tip, we have employed electrostatic clamping. Stiction has not been observed, but the required clamping voltage is greater than expected. We have developed a simple model to analyze our results.

Fast response cryogen level sensor

Liquid level in cryogenic tank or pipe, or amount of gas trapped in pipeline flow, is monitored electronically by cylindrical capacitive sensor. Changes in liquid level between concentric tubes of capacitor change its impedance, varying current in drive circuit. Since it is oriented parallel to direction of liquid flow, sensor presents little resistance to moving fluid.

Evaluation of Three Types of Electric Field Sensors

On June 3-4, 2025, we evaluated three types of electric-field (E-field) sensors: capacitive electrodes, stainless-steel stakes, and porous pots - at two electromagnetic (EM) stations (PWBVI and PWAOF) on Aqueduct Mesa at the Nevada National Security Site. We compared calibrated time series and derived metrics including power spectral density, root-mean-square (RMS) amplitude, signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and detectability of power line harmonics and Schumann resonance. The objective was to identify an alternative E field sensor with higher SNR than the existing capacitive electrodes. Our data demonstrates that stainless-steel electrodes perform best, with the highest SNR and the most consistent detection of power-line harmonics and Schumann resonance among the three sensor types; they may be used as a supplement to, or replacement for, the existing capacitive electrodes.

An Inexpensive Radiosonde Chilled Mirror Sensor: An Old Technology With New Impact

The availability of an inexpensive chilled mirror dewpoint sensor has made improved atmospheric relative humidity measurements accessible. Comparisons between the chilled mirror sensor and routine radiosonde sensors have provided new information on the limitation and reliability of the routine measurements. The chilled mirror has observed detailed moisture profiles at cirrus cloud levels when cirrus was not visible, a feature that routine sensors fail to observe. Comparison measurements between the chilled mirror, the carbon resistive (hygristor) and, the capacitive sensors will be discussed. Measurements from three locations (Wallops Island; Andros Island, Bahamas; and Camborne, UK) will be highlighted. It is conceivable that the chilled mirror sensor, when its capability is fully understood, may be sufficiently reliable to serve as a reference.
