A search for the doubly heavy \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) baryon using its decay to the D 0 pK – final state is performed using proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb - 1 . No significant signal is found in the invariant mass range from 6.7 to 7.2 GeV/ c 2 . Upper limits are set at 95% credibility level on the ratio of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) production cross-section times its branching fraction to D 0 pK - relative to that of the \( {\Lambda}_b^0\to {D}^0{pK}^{-} \) decay. The limits are set as a function of the \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses, in the rapidity range from 2.0 to 4.5 and in the transverse momentum region from 5 to 25 GeV/ c . Upper limits range from 1 . 7 × 10 - 2 to 3 . 0 × 10 - 1 for the considered \( {\Xi}_{bc}^0 \) mass and lifetime hypotheses.

Study of ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → J/ψπ + π – K + K – decays

The decays ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → J/ψπ + π – K + K – are studied using a data set corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb –1 , collected with the LHCb detector in proton-proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV. The decays ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → $\mathrm{J}/{ψ \mathrm{K}}^{\ast 0}{\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast 0}$ and ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ → χ c1 (3872)K + K – , where the K + K – pair does not originate from a Φ meson, are observed for the first time. Precise measurements of the ratios of branching fractions between intermediate χ c1 (3872)Φ, $\mathrm{J}/{ψ \mathrm{K}}^{\ast 0}{\overline{\mathrm{K}}}^{\ast 0}$, ψ(2S)Φ and χ c1 (3872)K + K – states are reported. A structure, denoted as X(4740), is observed in the J/ψΦ mass spectrum and, assuming a Breit-Wigner parameterisation, its mass and width are determined to be ${\displaystyle \begin{array}{c}{m}_{\mathrm{X}(4740)}=4741\pm 6\pm 6\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2,\\ {}{\Gamma}_{\mathrm{X}(4740)}=53\pm 15\pm 11\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV},\end{array}}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. In addition, the most precise single measurement of the mass of the ${\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0$ meson is performed and gives a value of ${m}_{{\mathrm{B}}_{\mathrm{s}}^0}=5366.98\pm 0.07\pm 0.13\kern0.5em \mathrm{MeV}/{c}^2.$

Measurement of the CKM angle γ in B ± → DK ± and B ± → Dπ ± decays with D → $ {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0 $h + h -

A measurement of CP -violating observables is performed using the decays B ± → DK ± and B ± → Dπ ± , where the D meson is reconstructed in one of the self-conjugate three-body final states \( {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0 \) π + π - and \( {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0 \) K + K - (commonly denoted \( {K}_{\mathrm{S}}^0 \) h + h - ). The decays are analysed in bins of the D -decay phase space, leading to a measurement that is independent of the modelling of the D -decay amplitude. The observables are inter- preted in terms of the CKM angle γ . Using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb - 1 collected in proton-proton collisions at centre-of mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV with the LHCb experiment, γ is measured to be \( \left({68.7}_{-5.1}^{+5.2}\right){}^{\circ} \) . The hadronic parameters \( {r}_B^{D K},{r}_B^{D\pi},{\delta}_B^{D K},\kern0.5em \mathrm{and}\kern0.5em {\delta}_B^{D\pi} \) , which are the ratios and strong-phase differences of the suppressed and favoured B ± decays, are also reported.

Measurement of CP observables in B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (*) π ± decays using two-body D final states

Measurements of CP observables in B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (*) π ± decays are presented, where D (∗) indicates a neutral D or D ∗ meson that is an admixture of meson and anti-meson states. Decays of the D (∗) meson to the Dπ 0 and Dγ final states are partially reconstructed without inclusion of the neutral pion or photon. Decays of the D meson are reconstructed in the K ± π ∓ , K + K - , and π + π - final states. The analysis uses a sample of charged B mesons produced in proton-proton collisions and collected with the LHCb experiment, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 2.0, 1.0, and 5.7 fb -1 taken at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, respectively. The measurements of partially reconstructed B ± → D (*) K ± and B ± → D (∗) π ± with D → K ∓ π ± decays are the first of their kind, and a first observation of the B ± → (Dπ 0 ) D ∗ π ± decay is made with a significance of 6.1 standard deviations. All CP observables are measured with world-best precision, and in combination with other LHCb results will provide strong constraints on the CKM angle γ.

Strong constraints on the b → sγ photon polarisation from B0 → K*0e+e-decays

An angular analysis of the B 0 → K* 0 e + e - decay is performed using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb - 1 of pp collisions collected with the LHCb experiment. The analysis is conducted in the very low dielectron mass squared ( q 2 ) interval between 0 . 0008 and 0 . 257 GeV 2 , where the rate is dominated by the B 0 → K * 0 γ transition with a virtual photon. The fraction of longitudinal polarisation of the K * 0 meson, F L , is measured to be F L = (4 . 4 ± 2 . 6 ± 1 . 4)%, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}} \) observable, which is related to the lepton forward-backward asymmetry, is measured to be \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Re}} \) = - 0 . 06 ± 0 . 08 ± 0 . 02. The \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)} \) and \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}} \) transverse asymmetries, which are sensitive to the virtual photon polarisation, are found to be \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{(2)} \) = 0 . 11 ± 0 . 10 ± 0 . 02 and \( {A}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{Im}} \) = 0 . 02 ± 0 . 10 ± 0 . 01. The results are consistent with Standard Model predictions and provide the world’s best constraint on the b → sγ photon polarisation.

The role of toroidal rotation in the very high energy confinement quality observed in super H-mode experiments on DIII-D

In this paper, we report the key role that toroidal rotation and the related E × B shear physics played in the very high energy confinement quality (H 98y2 > 1.5) of super H-mode experiments on DIII-D. Experiments show that the energy confinement quality decreases when toroidal rotation decreases due to the decreased externally controlled torque per particle. Meanwhile, the total pedestal pressure in the experiments remains very high during the rotation and confinement quality change. TGYRO transport modeling suggests the contribution from rotation in the E × B shear is responsible for the confinement quality in excess of standard H-mode (H 98y2 ~ 1). CGYRO gyrokinetic simulations reveal the governing physics in the core plasma of super H-modes: significant up-shift of nonlinear the ITG critical gradient is observed when applying E × B shear physics in the modeling based on experimental data. Furthermore, the effects of other physical parameters and contribution from pedestal height, which may play minor roles in this study, are also discussed.

Extended isogeometric analysis of multi-material and multi-physics problems using hierarchical B-splines

Here, this paper presents an immersed, isogeometric finite element framework to predict the response of multi-material, multi-physics problems with complex geometries using locally refined discretizations. To circumvent the need to generate conformal meshes, this work uses an extended finite element method (XFEM) to discretize the governing equations on non-conforming, embedding meshes. A flexible approach to create truncated hierarchical B-splines discretizations is presented. This approach enables the refinement of each state variable field individually to meet field-specific accuracy requirements. To obtain an immersed geometry representation that is consistent across all hierarchically refined B-spline discretizations, the geometry is immersed into a single mesh, the XFEM background mesh, which is constructed from the union of all hierarchical B-spline meshes. An extraction operator is introduced to represent the truncated hierarchical B-spline bases in terms of Lagrange shape functions on the XFEM background mesh without loss of accuracy. The truncated hierarchical B-spline bases are enriched using a generalized Heaviside enrichment strategy to accommodate small geometric features and multi-material problems. The governing equations are augmented by a formulation of the face-oriented ghost stabilization enhanced for locally refined B-spline bases. We present examples for two- and three-dimensional linear elastic and thermo-elastic problems. The numerical results validate the accuracy of our framework. The results also demonstrate the applicability of the proposed framework to large, geometrically complex problems.

Investigation into the event-activity dependence of $\Upsilon$(nS) relative production in proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 TeV

The ratios of the production cross sections between the excited ϒ(2S) and ϒ(3S) mesons and the ϒ(1S) ground state, detected via their decay into two muons, are studied as a function of the number of charged particles in the event. The data are from proton-proton collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 7 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.8 fb$^{−1}$, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC. Evidence of a decrease in these ratios as a function of the particle multiplicity is observed, more pronounced at low transverse momentum $ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\upmu \upmu} $. For ϒ(nS) mesons with $ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\upmu \upmu} $> 7 GeV, where most of the data were collected, the correlation with multiplicity is studied as a function of the underlying event transverse sphericity and the number of particles in a cone around the ϒ(nS) direction. The ratios are found to be multiplicity independent for jet-like events. The mean $ {p}_{\mathrm{T}}^{\upmu \upmu} $ values for the ϒ(nS) states as a function of particle multiplicity are also measured and found to grow more steeply as their mass increases.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Expression of interest for the CODEX-b detector

Abstract This document presents the physics case and ancillary studies for the proposed CODEX-b long-lived particle (LLP) detector, as well as for a smaller proof-of-concept demonstrator detector, CODEX- $$\beta $$ β , to be operated during Run 3 of the LHC. Our development of the CODEX-b physics case synthesizes ‘top-down’ and ‘bottom-up’ theoretical approaches, providing a detailed survey of both minimal and complete models featuring LLPs. Several of these models have not been studied previously, and for some others we amend studies from previous literature: In particular, for gluon and fermion-coupled axion-like particles. We moreover present updated simulations of expected backgrounds in CODEX-b’s actively shielded environment, including the effects of shielding propagation uncertainties, high-energy tails and variation in the shielding design. Initial results are also included from a background measurement and calibration campaign. A design overview is presented for the CODEX- $$\beta $$ β demonstrator detector, which will enable background calibration and detector design studies. Finally, we lay out brief studies of various design drivers of the CODEX-b experiment and potential extensions of the baseline design, including the physics case for a calorimeter element, precision timing, event tagging within LHCb, and precision low-momentum tracking.

Low-mass vector-meson production at forward rapidity in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider has measured low-mass vector-meson (𝜔+𝜌 and 𝜙) production through the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (1.2 < |y| < 2.2) in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{𝑁⁢𝑁}}$ = 200 GeV. The low-mass vector-meson yield and nuclear-modification factor were measured as a function of the average number of participating nucleons, ⟨𝑁 part ⟩, and the transverse momentum 𝑝 𝑇 . These results were compared with those obtained via the kaon decay channel in a similar 𝑝 𝑇 range at midrapidity. The nuclear-modification factors in both rapidity regions are consistent within the uncertainties. A comparison of the 𝜔 + 𝜌 and 𝐽/𝜓 mesons reveals that the light and heavy flavors are consistently suppressed across both 𝑝 𝑇 and ⟨𝑁 part ⟩. Finally, in contrast, the 𝜙 meson displays a nuclear-modification factor consistent with unity, suggesting strangeness enhancement in the medium formed.

First observation of the decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 183 Hg and B(M 2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart

The decay of the 13/2 + isomeric state in 183 Hg was observed for the first time following the a decay of the 13/2 + isomer in 187 Pb produced in the 142 Nd( 50 Cr, 2p3n) reaction. Using $\alpha - \gamma$ delayed coincidence measurements, the half-life of this isomer was measured to be 290(30) μs. This isomer is proposed to deexcite by an unobserved low-energy M2 transition to the known 9/2 - member of a strongly prolate-deformed 7/2 - [514] band, followed by a 105-keV M1 transition to the bandhead. A lower limit of B(M2) >= 0.018 W.u. was deduced for the unobserved transition. The presumed retardation is proposed to be due to the notable shape change between the initial, nearly spherical, and the final, strongly deformed, states. A similar scenario is also considered for the 13/2 + isomer in 181 Hg, suggesting both are cases of shape isomers. The B(M2) systematics of neutron transitions across the nuclear chart is discussed.

Numerical studies of collinear laser-assisted injection from a foil for plasma wakefield accelerators

We present a laser-assisted electron injection scheme for beam-driven plasma wakefield acceleration. The laser is collinear with the driver and triggers the injection of hot electrons into the plasma wake by interaction with a thin solid target. We present a baseline case using the AWAKE Run 2 parameters and then perform variations on key parameters to explore the scheme. It is found that the trapped witness electron charge may be tuned by altering laser parameters, with a strong dependence on the phase of the wake upon injection. Normalized emittance settles at the order of micrometres and varies with witness charge. The scheme is robust to misalignment, with a 1/10th plasma skin-depth offset ( 20 μ m for the AWAKE case) having a negligible effect on the final beam. The final beam quality is better than similar existing schemes, and several avenues for further optimization are indicated. The constraints on the AWAKE experiment are very specific, but the general principles of this mechanism can be applied to future beam-driven plasma wakefield accelerator experiments. The physics program for Hall B at Jefferson Lab includes multiple, high-impact experiments scattering electrons from transversely polarized protons. These experiments will measure, for example, the Transverse Momentum Distributions and the Generalized Parton Distribution for protons, using, respectively, semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering and deeply virtual Compton scattering. In this talk I will discuss the technical challenges to implementing a polarized solid-state target in the Hall B experimental environment, examine potential solutions, and describe the current status of the target design.
