A Search for Neutron to Mirror Neutron Oscillation Using Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Measurements

Baryon number violation is a key ingredient of baryogenesis. It has been hypothesized that there could also be a parity-conjugated copy of the standard model particles, called mirror particles. The existence of such a mirror universe has specific testable implications, especially in the domain of neutral particle oscillation, viz. the baryon number violating neutron to mirror-neutron (n−n′) oscillation. Consequently, there were many experiments that have searched for n−n′ oscillation, and imposed constraints upon the parameters that describe it. Recently, further analysis on some of these results have identified anomalies which could point to the detection of n−n′ oscillation. All the previous efforts searched for n−n′ oscillation by comparing the relative number of ultracold neutrons that survive after a period of storage for one or both of the two cases: (i) comparison of zero applied magnetic field to a non-zero applied magnetic field, and (ii) comparison where the orientation of the applied magnetic field was reversed. However, n−n′ oscillations also lead to variations in the precession frequency of polarized neutrons upon flipping the direction of the applied magnetic field. Precession frequencies are measured, very precisely, by experiments searching for the electric dipole moment. For the first time, we used the data from the latest search for the neutron electric dipole moment to constrain n−n′ oscillation. After compensating for the systematic effects that affect the ratio of precession frequencies of ultracold neutrons and cohabiting 199Hg-atoms, chief among which was due to their motion in non-uniform magnetic field, we constrained any further perturbations due to n−n′ oscillation. We thereby provide a lower limit on the n−n′ oscillation time constant of τnn′/|cos(β)|>5.7s,0.36T′

Preliminary Analysis of Moog SureFly Electric Motor Noise Measurements

The results of acoustics measurements on the installed and unloaded axial-flux electric motor used on the Moog SureFly® vehicle are presented and compared to previous ground run-up measurements for the vehicle. The directivity of the motor was found to be significantly different than that obtained for much smaller 2 – 4 kW radial flux motors tested previously in the Acoustic Test Laboratory at NASA Glenn. Significant radiation occurred at shaft orders between 17 and 20 and at order 30. Peak radiation levels occurred near the highest speeds expected for the vehicle. There was an indication that some of the tones appearing in the spectra obtained in the previous ground run-up test were associated with the motor.

Measurements of middle-atmosphere electric fields and associated electrical conductivities

A simple antenna for measuring the vertical electric field in the 'middle atmosphere' has been flown on a number of rocket-launched parachute-borne payloads. The data from the first nine such flights, launched under a variety of geophysical conditions, are presented, along with electrical conductivities measured simultaneously. The data include indications of layered peaks of several volts per meter in the mesospheric field at high and low latitudes in situations of relatively low conductivity. During an auroral 'REP' event the electric field reversed direction in the lower stratosphere, accompanied by a substantial enhancement in conductivity. The data generally do not confirm speculations based only on the extension of the thunderstorm circuit from below or the mapping of ionospheric and magnetospheric fields from above, but seem to require, in addition, internal generation processes in the middle atmosphere.

Inductive Measurement of Plasma Jet Electrical Conductivity (MSFC Center Director's discretionary Fund)

Measurement of plasma jet electrical conductivity has utility in the development of explosively driven magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) energy converters as well as magnetic flux compression reaction chambers for nuclear/chemical pulse propulsion and power. Within these types of reactors, the physical parameter of critical importance to underlying MHD processes is the magnetic Reynolds number, the value of which depends upon the product of plasma electrical conductivity and velocity. Therefore, a thorough understanding of MHD phenomena at high magnetic Reynolds number is essential, and methods are needed for the accurate and reliable measurement of electrical conductivity in high-speed plasma jets. It is well known that direct measurements using electrodes suffer from large surface resistance, and an electrodeless technique is desired. To address this need, an inductive probing scheme, originally developed for shock tube studies, has been adapted. In this method, the perturbation of an applied magnetic field by a plasma jet induces a voltage in a search coil, which, in turn, can be used to infer electrical conductivity through the inversion of a Fredholm integral equation of the first kind. A 1-in.-diameter probe using a light-gas gun. Exploratory laboratory experiments were carried out using plasma jets expelled from 15-g shaped charges. Measured conductivities were in the range of 4 kS/m for unseeded octol charges and 26 kS/m for seeded octol charges containing 2-percent potassium carbonate by mass.

Midlatitude measurements of the ionospheric electric field during the ALADDIN programme

Three measurements of ionospheric electric field were made during the 24-h ALADDIN rocket program at Wallops Island on June 29-30, 1974. The first of these used a double probe instrument, flown at 1500 Local Solar Time, and the second and third measurements were made by barium cloud releases at evening and morning twilight. These three electric field vectors have been compared with the predictions of a number of models of electric field due to the dynamo effects of various atmospheric tides, and also of a possible magnetospheric origin. On the assumption that the measurements were made at a location equatorward of the afternoon convergence and poleward of the morning divergence in the electric field patterns related to the Sq current system, Stening's (1973) model of the diurnal variation of the electric field induced by the (1, -2) tidal model at the time of the summer solstice correctly predicts the directions of the observed electric field. Forbes and Lindzen's (1976, 1977) model, incorporating the three major propagating tidal modes as well as the evanescent (1, -2) mode, also bears an acceptable relationship to the ALADDIN electric field directions. The ALADDIN E-field magnitudes are comparable with those obtained by ground-based observations from Millstone Hill and from Saint Santin but are about half of Stening's model values, and three times those of Forbes and Lindzen. Saint Santin E-field directions, at the same latitude but 75 deg difference in longitude, are distinctly different from ALADDIN, implying that longitudinal differences are significant.

High temperature static strain measurement with an electrical resistance strain gage

An electrical resistance strain gage that can supply accurate static strain measurement for NASP application is being developed both in thin film and fine wire forms. This gage is designed to compensate for temperature effects on substrate materials with a wide range of thermal expansion coefficients. Some experimental results of the wire gage tested on one of the NASP structure materials, i.e., titanium matrix composites, are presented.

Methods for Precision Studies of Neutrino Interactions

Accelerator neutrino oscillation experiments provide a sensitive way to investigatea number of major open questions in neutrino physics. To achieve precision neutrinooscillation measurements, we need a good understanding of key aspects of the experiments, such as the detection technologies used and neutrino interactions at few-GeV energies. The MicroBooNE experiment has advanced the development of technologies for LArTPCs.An ultra-violet laser system was introduced to MicroBooNE in order to measure theelectric field in situ, which plays a central role in the formation of charge and lightsignals in LArTPCs. This thesis describes the setup and operation of the laser system. Ideveloped a general methodology to measure the electric field and the consequent spatialdistortion in LArTPCs, which supports precision measurements in accelerator neutrinooscillation experiments. In MicroBooNE, the measured electric field distortions are upto 15 ± 3 % with respect to the nominal value, and the measured spatial distortions areup to 15 ± 3 cm. The result of the electric field measurement is applied to the detectorsimulation and the event reconstruction, which leads to a better detector characterizationfor neutrino analyses. A significant concern for measurements of neutrino interactions ismodel dependence, as the currently available models are not sufficient for describing thepicture of neutrino interacting at few-GeV energies. In this thesis, I developed a detailedstrategy for a model-independent cross-section measurement at low energy transfers, where the available model predictions do not agree with the inclusive measurementsfrom multiple experiments. A likelihood fit technique for cross-section extraction isrealized in an accelerator neutrino experiment using a LArTPC for the first time. Thetreatment of systematic uncertainties developed in this thesis is generally applicable foranalyses using similar fitting techniques. This neutrino interaction study at low energytransfers provides a probe to the poorly understood region of neutrino cross sections. Themeasurement scheme developed here aims to guide future model-independent cross-sectionmeasurements, particularly for neutrino experiments using LArTPCs.

Alignment of the straw tracking detectors for the Fermilab Muon $g − 2$ experiment and systematic studies for a muon electric dipole moment measurement

The Fermilab Muon $g-2$ experiment is currently preparing for its fourth data-taking period (Run-4). The experiment-wide effort on the analysis of Run-1 data is nearing completion, with the announcement of the first result expected in the coming months. The final goal of the experiment is to determine the muon magnetic anomaly to a precision of 140 ppb. This level of precision will provide indirect evidence of new physics, if the central value agrees with the previously-measured value of the magnetic anomaly. Essential in reducing the systematic uncertainty, through measurements of the muon beam profile, are the in-vacuum straw tracking detectors. A crucial prerequisite in obtaining accurate distributions of the beam profile is the internal alignment of the tracking detectors, which is described in this thesis. As a result of this position calibration, the tracking efficiency has increased by 3%, while the track quality increased by 4%. This thesis also discusses an additional measurement that will be made using the tracking detectors: a search for an electric dipole moment (EDM) of the muon, through the direct detection of an oscillation in the average vertical angle of the electron from the muon decay. An observation of a muon EDM would be evidencemore » of new physics and would provide a new source of CP violation in the charged lepton sector. Essential in measuring the EDM are accurate and precise estimations of potential non-zero radial and longitudinal magnetic fields, which were estimated using the Run-1 data. In addition, a preliminary analysis using the Run-1 data was undertaken to estimate the available precision for the magnetic anomaly measurement using the tracking detectors.« less

Comparative rocket observations of ionospheric electric fields in the auroral oval

The ion drift technique of measuring ionospheric electric fields is compared to two other simultaneous measurements. Rocket measurements in the evening auroral oval are checked against a dual probe, also in situ, and the ground based STARE auroral radar. The technique is explained thoroughly as well as tested for its dependence on mass. Two evening auroral oval conditions were observed from Andoya, Norway in January and February 1977. The first flight, 18:1005, measured electric fields over a quiet pre-midnight discrete arc. An interesting plasma convection reversal was observed poleward of the arc. The subsequent 18:1004, samples a breakup phase aurora nearer local midnight.

Effect of Measurement Temperature on Electrical Cable Frequency Domain Reflectometry Response

In nuclear power plants, electrical cables are exposed to stressors, such as elevated temperature and radiation. Evaluation of the effect of stressors on the lifetime of electrical cables can be conducted using offline electrical reflectometry techniques, such as frequency domain reflectometry (FDR). However, recent work has raised the concern that FDR measurements at temperatures higher than ambient may diminish or reduce the response due to stressors, potentially leading to incorrect predictions of electrical cable damage and lifetime. In this work, we explore the FDR response of an electrical cable exposed to an oven-based thermal stressor up to 140°C, including both ramping up and ramping down temperature. It was observed that, for both the oven entrance and exit, an increase in the FDR measurement temperature led to a decrease in the FDR reflection coefficient. In particular, it was found that the reflection coefficient at the oven entrance decreased from the ambient measurement by approximately 7%, 22%, and 36% at a temperature of 60°C, 100°C, and 140°C, respectively.
