Magnetic field driven emergent phenomena: Insights from magneto-optics and nanoscopy

This review explores magnetic field-driven emergent phenomena across various material systems, emphasizing the pivotal roles of magneto-optical and nanoscopy techniques. We examine fundamental aspects of Landau electrodynamics in both 2D and 3D systems, including quantum Hall and topological magnetoelectric effects in graphene and topological insulators. Particularly attention is given to magnetic excitations and magnetopolaritons, such as surface magnon polaritons, magnetoplasmons, and magnetoexcitons in novel quantum materials, including quantum magnets and hybrid heterostructures. Advanced imaging techniques, such as scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) and microwave impedance microscopy, are showcased for their capability to resolve these phenomena with microscopic and nanoscopic resolution. These insights are complemented by discussions of advanced experimental approaches, including cryogenic environments, ultrafast pump-probe techniques, and the integration of magnetic fields into near-field optical methodologies. We further investigate the potential of these imaging techniques for unraveling complex magnetic orders, quantum phases, and correlated electronic behaviors. Finally, we offer perspectives on future research directions and highlight emerging opportunities in the evolving field of optical magneto-nanoscopy.

Toward Interpreting the IBEX Ribbon with Mirror Diffusion in Interstellar Turbulent Magnetic Fields

We investigate the role of the magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence measured by Voyager in the very local interstellar medium (VLISM) in modeling the Interstellar Boundary Explorer ribbon. We demonstrate that the mirroring by compressible modes of MHD turbulence dominates over that by the mean magnetic field. Based on the new mirror diffusion mechanism identified by Lazarian & Xu for particles with large pitch angles in MHD turbulence, we find that the mirror diffusion can both confine pickup ions and preserve their initial pitch angles, and thus it accounts for the enhanced intensity of energetic neutral atoms that return to the heliosphere. The ribbon width is determined by both the range of pitch angles for effective turbulent mirroring and the field line wandering induced by Alfvénic modes. It in turn provides a constraint on the amplitude of magnetic fluctuations of fast modes. The field line wandering also affects the coherence of the ribbon structure across the sky. By extrapolating the magnetic energy spectrum measured by Voyager, we find that the injection scale of the turbulence in the VLISM must be less than ~500 au for the ribbon structure to be coherent.

Chiral hydrodynamics in strong external magnetic fields

We construct the general hydrodynamic description of (3+1)-dimensional chiral charged (quantum) fluids subject to a strong external magnetic field with effective field theory methods. We determine the constitutive equations for the energy-momentum tensor and the axial charge current, in part from a generating functional. Furthermore, we derive the Kubo formulas which relate two-point functions of the energy-momentum tensor and charge current to 27 transport coefficients: 8 independent thermodynamic, 4 independent non-dissipative hydrodynamic, and 10 independent dissipative hydrodynamic transport coefficients. Five Onsager relations render 5 more transport coefficients dependent. We uncover four novel transport effects, which are encoded in what we call the shear-induced conductivity, the two expansion-induced longitudinal conductivities and the shear-induced Hall conductivity. Remarkably, the shear-induced Hall conductivity constitutes a novel non-dissipative transport effect. As a demonstration, we compute all transport coefficients explicitly in a strongly coupled quantum fluid via holography.

Prediction of electric and magnetic fields from spectral data using machine learning algorithms for Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy diagnostics

The prediction of electric and magnetic field amplitudes from atomic spectral data is critical for plasma control in fusion devices such as tokamaks. Conventional approaches that rely on physics-based models are computationally expensive and unsuitable for real-time applications. In this work, we develop and benchmark three machine learning algorithms—simulation-based inference (SBI), fully connected neural networks (FCNN), and histogram-based gradient boosting regression (GBR-Hist)—to infer field intensities directly from Doppler-free saturation spectroscopy (DFSS) spectra. Synthetic datasets of spectra were generated using the EZSSS code and evaluated both with and without added Poisson noise to mimic experimental conditions. We find that SBI achieves the highest accuracy and robustness, FCNN provides a strong balance of accuracy and computational efficiency for real-time applications, and GBR-Hist offers the fastest inference but is more sensitive to noise. Furthermore, these results demonstrate the potential of machine learning to accelerate DFSS analysis and enhance its utility for plasma diagnostics and control.

High energy particle production from proton synchrotron radiation in strong magnetic fields in relativistic quantum field theory

We investigate photon, pion, and 𝜌-meson production from proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of strong magnetic fields. The proton decay widths and the luminosities of the emitted particles are calculated within a relativistic quantum framework that incorporates Landau quantization. A scaling rule is derived for the transition probability between different Landau levels. This allows an evaluation of transitions for extremely high Landau numbers exceeding 10 15 . Furthermore, we calculate the momentum distribution of the emitted particles by properly including the proton recoil effect associated with particle emission. The results differ significantly from conventional semiclassical approaches.

Maximum Interior Voltage and Magnetic Field Penetration Through a Ferromagnetic Layer

This report examines the problem of magnetic penetration of a conductive layer, including nonlinear ferromagnetic layers, excited by an electric current filament. The electric current filament is, for example, a nearby wire excited by a lightning strike. The internal electric field and external magnetic field are determined. Numerical results are compared to various analytical approximations to help understand the physics involved in the penetration.

Vector potential and surface magnetic field in magnetoelectric antiferromagnetic materials

A general formula for the average vector potential of bulk periodic systems is proposed and shown to set the boundary conditions at magnetic interfaces. Here, for antiferromagnetic materials, the study reveals a unique relation between the macroscopic potential and the orientation-dependent magnetic quadrupole as a result of the different crystalline and magnetic symmetries. In particular, at surfaces and interfaces of a truncated bulk without inversion and time-reversal symmetries, the average vector potential exhibits a discontinuity which results in an interfacial magnetic field. In general, however, due to the surface and interface electronic and atomic relaxations, additional magnetization may result. For the experimentally observed magnetoelectric antiferromagnets, in particular, our symmetry analysis suggests that the relaxation effects could well be a system response to the presence of such a potential discontinuity.

Pre-planetary nebulae: a context for principles, progress, and questions on how binaries and magnetic fields produce jets

Astrophysical outflows treated initially as spherically symmetric often show evidence for asymmetry once seen at higher resolution. The preponderance of aspherical and multipolar planetary nebulae (PN) and pre-planetary nebulae (PPN) was evident after many observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. Binary interactions have long been thought to be essential for shaping asymmetric PN/PPN, but how? PPN are the more kinematically demanding of the two, and warrant particular focus. I address how progress from observation and theory suggests two broad classes of accretion driven PPN jets: one for wider binaries (PPN-W) where the companion is outside the outer radius of the giant and accretes via Roche lobe overflow, and the other which occurs in the later stages of CE for close binaries (PPN-C). Furthermore, the physics within these scenarios connects to progress and open questions about the role and origin of magnetic fields in the engines and in astrophysical jets more generally.

Advanced flip-coil system for magnetic field integral measurements of insertion devices

A novel flip-coil measurement system has been developed for the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory. This paper describes the design, implementation, and commissioning of the new measurement bench, highlighting its key features, including improved mechanical stability, advanced data acquisition, and enhanced reproducibility. The system enables precise characterization of field integrals and multipole components, ensuring the optimal performance of Insertion Devices (IDs) before installation in the NSLS-II storage ring. The flip-coil system incorporates an innovative approach to minimize mechanical and electrical errors, which significantly improves the reproducibility of measurements. In addition, the system features a state-of-the-art data acquisition system that enables real-time monitoring and analysis, further enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of the measurement process. Furthermore, preliminary tests have demonstrated that the new system meets the stringent requirements for magnetic field characterization of advanced insertion devices, making it an essential tool for future ID commissioning and quality assurance at NSLS-II.

Laser-induced-fluorescence imaging of a spin-polarized ultracold neutral plasma in a magnetic field

In this work, we report Doppler-sensitive laser-induced-fluorescence (LIF) imaging of an ultracold neutral plasma in a magnetic field. Local values of ion density, hydrodynamic fluid velocity, temperature, and spin polarization are obtained using a fluorescence model based on velocity-resolved rate equations (REs) including the transfer of ions between states due to laser coupling and spontaneous emission. The RE approach captures optical pumping of ions into states that are not driven by the LIF excitation laser, and this is validated with experimental data. Combined molecular-dynamics and quantum-trajectories simulations verify that velocity-changing collisions have a negligible impact on the state population evolution for typical experimental conditions. Relative intensities of Zeeman components of the LIF spectra provide clear evidence that the ions are electron-spin-polarized when created by photoionization of magnetically trapped 88 Sr atoms. This probe opens many possibilities for studying thermal transport and the equilibration of neutral plasmas in overlapping regimes of strong coupling and magnetization.

Upper critical magnetic field and multiband superconductivity in artificial high-𝑇 𝑐 superlattices of nano quantum wells

Artificial high-T c superlattices (AHTS) composed of quantum building blocks with tunable superconducting critical temperature have been synthesized by engineering their nanoscale geometry using the Bianconi-Perali Valletta (BPV) two-gap superconductivity theory. These quantum heterostructures consist of quantum wells made of superconducting, modulation-doped Mott insulators (S), confined by a metallic (N) potential barrier. The lattice geometry has been carefully engineered to induce the predicted Fano-Feshbach shape resonance between the gaps, near a topological Lifshitz transition. Here, we validate the BPV theory by providing compelling experimental evidence that AHTS samples, at the peak of the superconducting dome, exhibit resonant two-band, two-gap superconductivity. This is demonstrated by measuring the temperature dependence of the upper critical magnetic field, μ 0 H c2 , in samples with superlattice periods 3.3 < d < 5.28 nm and L/d ratios close to the magic value 2/3 (where L is the thickness of the superconducting La 2 CuO 4 layer and d is the superlattice period). Here, the data reveal the predicted upward concavity in H c2 (T) and a characteristic kink in the coherence length as a function of temperature, confirming the predicted two-band superconductivity with Fermi velocity ratio ≈ 0.25 and significant pair-exchange term among the two condensates.

Ion heat and parallel momentum transport by stochastic magnetic fields and turbulence

In this work, the theory of turbulent transport of parallel momentum and ion heat by the interaction of stochastic magnetic fields and turbulence is presented. Attention is focused on determining the kinetic stress and the compressive energy flux. A critical parameter is identified as the ratio of the turbulent scattering rate to the rate of parallel acoustic dispersion. For the parameter large, the kinetic stress takes the form of a viscous stress. For the parameter small, the quasilinear residual stress is recovered. In practice, the viscous stress is the relevant form, and the quasilinear limit is not observable. This is the principal prediction of this paper. A simple physical picture is developed and shown to recover the results of the detailed analysis.

Robust Spin-Moiré-Superlattice-Driven Gap Opening in EuAg 4 Sb 2 under in-Plane Magnetic Field

Moiré superlattices introduce new length and energy scales, enabling discoveries, such as unconventional superconductivity, in 2D systems. This concept has recently been extended to bulk materials with multiple-q spin textures, opening exciting opportunities for spin moiré physics. A notable example is EuAg 4 S b2 , where a spin moiré superlattice (SMS), manifested as a double-q spin modulation, induces a superzone gap opening. In this work, we investigate the tunability of this gap by an in-plane magnetic field in EuAg 4 Sb 2 by using neutron scattering, magnetization, and transport measurements. We reveal a cycloidal ground state and multiple spin-reoriented phases induced by the in-plane field, highlighting the critical role of in-plane components in driving magnetic transitions. Moreover, we demonstrate that a robust gap opening persists in the double-q phase, regardless of in-plane field orientation. Model calculations attribute this robustness to the stability of the SMS under tilted fields. Here, our results establish EuAg 4 Sb 2 as a tunable platform for exploring the spin-texture-driven superzone gap opening in electronic states.

Developing compact tuning fork thermometers for sub-mK temperatures and high magnetic fields

There is a growing demand for experiments on calorimetric and thermal transport measurements at ultra-low temperatures below 1 mK and high magnetic fields up to 16 T. Particularly, milligram-sized solid samples are of great interest. Here, we present the development of scalable thermometers based on quartz tuning fork resonators immersed in liquid 3 He and adapt hydrodynamic models to provide an improved description of temperature dependence in the high viscosity regime between 1 and 10mK. We demonstrate successful thermometer operation and discuss the feasibility of fast and compact thermal probes suitable for small samples.
