Rare earth ion transport and selectivity in large diameter nanotube porins

Selective separation of rare earth elements (REEs) in nanoporous media is very challenging due to the similar physicochemical properties of trivalent lanthanide ions. In this work, we systematically investigate the transport and selectivity of REE 3+ ions through two model nanofluidic channels: 1.5 nm diameter carbon nanotube porins (wCNTPs) and 2.1 nm diameter boron nitride nanotube porins (BNNTPs). Using a fluorescence-based vesicle assay, we find that while wCNTPs show almost no differential selectivity across the lanthanide series, a behavior consistent with bulk-dominant transport through their moderately-confined channels with chemically inert, hydrophobic walls. In contrast, BNNTPs exhibit nearly an order of magnitude higher permeability and significant differential selectivity, following a volcano-shaped trend with Eu 3+ ions showing the highest permeability. We attribute this enhanced performance to the high negative surface charge of BNNTPs, which facilitates a surface-dominated transport mechanism where ion migration within the electric double layer becomes the primary contributor to conductance. These results elucidate the distinct roles of surface charge in nanoscale confinement and provide critical design rules for the development of future membranes tailored for efficient REE separations.

Solar gamma-ray lines as probes of accelerated particle directionalities in flares

Anisotropies of charged particles accelerated in solar flares were studied by observing Doppler shifts of selected gamma-ray lines. The spectral shape was calculated of the 6.1-MeV line of O-16. If the accelerated particles are isotropic, the line remains centered at e sub 0 = 6129.4 keV, and its width (FWHM) is about 100 keV. For particle anisotropies that may be produced in solar flares, the line is shifted to lower energies by about 30 to 40 keV.

Study of digital charge coupled devices

Charge coupled devices represent unique usage of the metal oxide semiconductor concept. These devices can sample an AC signal at the input, transfer charge proportional to this signal through the CCD shift register and then provide an output of the same frequency and shape as the input. The delay time between input and output is controlled by the CCD operating frequency and the number of stages in the shift resistor. This work is a reliability evaluation of the buried channel and surface channel CCD technologies. The constructions are analyzed, failure modes are described, and test results are reported.

Pulse-shape discrimination against low-energy Ar-39 beta decays in liquid argon with 4.5 tonne-years of DEAP-3600 data

The DEAP-3600 detector searches for the scintillation signal from dark matter particles scattering on a 3.3 tonne liquid argon target. The largest background comes from 39 Ar beta decays and is suppressed using pulse-shape discrimination (PSD). We use two types of PSD estimator: the prompt-fraction, which considers the fraction of the scintillation signal in a narrow and a wide time window around the event peak, and the log-likelihood-ratio, which compares the observed photon arrival times to a signal and a background model. We furthermore use two algorithms to determine the number of photons detected at a given time: (1) simply dividing the charge of each PMT pulse by the mean single-photoelectron charge, and (2) a likelihood analysis that considers the probability to detect a certain number of photons at a given time, based on a model for the scintillation pulse shape and for afterpulsing in the light detectors. The prompt-fraction performs approximately as well as the log-likelihood-ratio PSD algorithm if the photon detection times are not biased by detector effects. We explain this result using a model for the information carried by scintillation photons as a function of the time when they are detected.

Understanding PDF uncertainty in W boson mass measurements*

Abstract We study the dependence of the transverse mass distribution of charged leptons and the missing energy on parton distributions (PDFs) adapted to W boson mass measurements at the CDF and ATLAS experiments. We compare the shape variations of the distribution induced by different PDFs and find that the spread of predictions from different PDF sets can be significantly larger than the PDF uncertainty predicted by a specific PDF set. We suggest analyzing the experimental data using up-to-date PDFs to gain a better understanding of the PDF uncertainties in W boson mass measurements. We also perform a series of Lagrange multiplier scans to identify the constraints on the transverse mass distribution imposed by individual data sets in the CT18 global analysis. In the case of the CDF measurement, the distribution is mostly sensitive to d -quark PDFs in the intermediate x region, which are largely constrained by DIS and Drell-Yan data on deuteron targets and Tevatron lepton charge asymmetry data.

First experimental measurements with the Segmented Inverted-coaxial GerMAnium (SIGMA) detector

The SIGMA project aims to develop a p-type segmented inverted coaxial point contact germanium detector for gamma-ray tracking and imaging. Here the performance of the first prototype of this type of detector is reported. The measurements performed verified the size and shape of the crystal and determined the location of the complex active volumes of the detector segments. The latter determines the charge collection times that are related to the position of interaction. Good agreement is found between the results and the specified crystal design. The energy resolution of the point contact has been measured to be 0.84 keV and 2.21 keV at 122 keV and 1332 keV, respectively.

Directional ballistic transport in the two-dimensional metal PdCoO2

Abstract In an idealized infinite crystal, the material properties are constrained by the symmetries of the unit cell. The point-group symmetry is broken by the sample shape of any finite crystal, but this is commonly unobservable in macroscopic metals. To sense the shape-induced symmetry lowering in such metals, long-lived bulk states originating from an anisotropic Fermi surface are needed. Here we show how a strongly facetted Fermi surface and the long quasiparticle mean free path present in microstructures of PdCoO 2 yield an in-plane resistivity anisotropy that is forbidden by symmetry on an infinite hexagonal lattice. We fabricate bar-shaped transport devices narrower than the mean free path from single crystals using focused ion beam milling, such that the ballistic charge carriers at low temperatures frequently collide with both of the side walls that define the channel. Two symmetry-forbidden transport signatures appear: the in-plane resistivity anisotropy exceeds a factor of 2, and a transverse voltage appears in zero magnetic field. Using ballistic Monte Carlo simulations and a numerical solution of the Boltzmann equation, we identify the orientation of the narrow channel as the source of symmetry breaking.

Redox oscillations in 18650-type lithium-ion cell revealed by in operando Compton scattering imaging

Compton scattering imaging using high-energy synchrotron x rays allows the visualization of the spatiotemporal lithiation state in lithium-ion batteries probed in operando. Here, we apply this imaging technique to the commercial 18650-type cylindrical lithium-ion battery. Our analysis of the line shapes of the Compton scattering spectra taken from different electrode layers reveals the emergence of inhomogeneous lithiation patterns during the charge-discharge cycles. Moreover, these patterns exhibit oscillations in time where the dominant period corresponds to the timescale of the charging curve.

Large Polarons as Key Quasiparticles in SrTiO 3 and SrTiO 3 -Based Heterostructures

Despite its simple structure and low degree of electronic correlation, SrTiO 3 (STO) features collective phenomena linked to charge transport and, ultimately, superconductivity, that are not yet fully explained. Thus, a better insight into the nature of the quasiparticles shaping the electronic and conduction properties of STO is needed. We studied the low-energy excitations of bulk STO and of the LaAlO 3 / SrTiO 3 two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by Ti L 3 edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. In all samples, we find the hallmark of polarons in the form of intense d d + phonon excitations, and a decrease of the LO3-mode electron-phonon coupling when going from insulating to highly conducting STO single crystals and heterostructures. Overall, both results are attributed to the dynamic screening of the large polaron self-induced polarization, showing that the low-temperature physics of STO and STO-based 2DEGs is dominated by large polaron quasiparticles.

Trapping Two Dissimilar Rigidity Ions with Identical Average Dynamics

It may seem obvious that ions with different charge-to-mass ratios (q/m) would have different dynamics in a trap or periodic focussing system, leading to different equilibrium bunch shapes and sizes. However, the ponderomotive acceleration in an oscillating field is proportional to (q/m) 2 rather than q/m for the direct field, leading to the possibility of combining the two effects to cancel any differences in the average dynamics between two chosen species.

Microchannel plate life tests

The behavior of the gain of a microchannel plate (MCP) during operation of the latter at moderate output currents was investigated. The total charge per unit area, Q, extracted from the MCP is shown to be the relevant quantity for evaluating MCP performance. The shape of the gain versus Q curve provides information on the gain decay process. Long periods of stable gain, frequently exhibited by channeltrons, were not observed in the present experiment.

GEMS X-ray Polarimeter Performance Simulations

The Gravity and Extreme Magnetism Small explorer (GEMS) is an X-ray polarization telescope selected as a NASA small explorer satellite mission. The X-ray Polarimeter on GEMS uses a Time Projection Chamber gas proportional counter to measure the polarization of astrophysical X-rays in the 2-10 keV band by sensing the direction of the track of the primary photoelectron excited by the incident X-ray. We have simulated the expected sensitivity of the polarimeter to polarized X-rays. We use the simulation package Penelope to model the physics of the interaction of the initial photoelectron with the detector gas and to determine the distribution of charge deposited in the detector volume. We then model the charge diffusion in the detector, and produce simulated track images. Within the track reconstruction algorithm we apply cuts on the track shape and focus on the initial photoelectron direction in order to maximize the overall sensitivity of the instrument, using this technique we have predicted instrument modulation factors nu(sub 100) for 100% polarized X-rays ranging from 10% to over 60% across the 2-10 keV X-ray band. We also discuss the simulation program used to develop and model some of the algorithms used for triggering, and energy measurement of events in the polarimeter.

Observations of energetic oxygen and carbon ions with charge states between 3 and 6 in the magnetosphere

Data obtained by the AMPTE/CCE charge-energy-mass spectrometer are used to study the average spatial distributions of oxygen and carbon ions with charge states between 3 and 6. The O(6+) and C(6+) ion fluxes are found to increase with the drift shell parameter L up to a constant level at L of not less than 7. It is suggested that the diurnal variations noted are related to the shape of the L profiles. The results support a model in which the solar wind origin O(6+) and C(6+) ions and the terrestrial origin O(+) and O(2+) ions are transported from the tail towards the earth. Charge exchange processes near the earth produce the oxygen and carbon ions with charge states between 3 and 5.

Design and Manufacturing of High Performance, Reduced Charge Heat Exchangers

A framework of stress analysis and fatigue analysis was developed. Utilizing the framework, stress analysis and fatigue analysis of high-performance heat exchangers with non-round shaped tubes were studied. The tubes, headers and welding layers were studied separately before analyzing the assembled heat exchangers. Results reveal different stress strength on the different shapes of tubes and headers. Unevenly welding distribution is also discussed in the report. Moreover, the fatigue analysis results of the heat exchanger are helping to estimate the lifetime of the heat exchanger from fatigue point of view.

Fast-neutron response of LaBr 3 (Ce) and LaCl 3 (Ce) scintillators

The response of LaBr 3 (Ce) and LaCl 3 (Ce) scintillators to fast neutrons is investigated. Neutron-induced charged-particle reactions are observed in both materials when exposed to the fast neutrons produced by an AmBe source, with pulse-shape discrimination used to separate channels. LaBr 3 (Ce) is found to have the best separation between reaction channels, while LaCl 3 (Ce) has a significantly higher efficiency.

Efficient charge to spin conversion in iridium oxide thin films

Many 5d transition metal oxides have a unique electronic structure, where the density of states near the Fermi level is dominated by only 5d electrons with strong spin–orbit coupling. IrO 2 , a Dirac nodal line semi-metal, is the simplest of these oxides. The presence of 5d electrons and gap opening of Dirac nodal lines via strong spin–orbit coupling allows for the hybridization of the 5d electrons of the oxide with the itinerant d electrons of a ferromagnet, while simultaneously increasing the intrinsic spin Hall effect. We report large charge-to-spin conversion in thin films of this material using spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance experiments. Finally, by independently performing line shape analysis and linewidth modulation experiments, we conclusively determine the spin Hall angle of optimized IrO 2 films to be ∼8 times larger than that of Pt.

Ultrafast laser triggered electron emission from ultrananocrystalline diamond pyramid tip cathode

Nitrogen-incorporated ultrananocrystalline diamond [(N)UNCD] pyramid tip cathode has been considered as a next-generation high peak current electron source for dielectric laser accelerators as well as other high peak current particle accelerator applications. In this work, we study non-linear photoemission from an (N)UNCD pyramid tip cathode using an ultrafast laser with the pulse length of 150 fs with the central wavelength of 800 nm in the peak intensity range of 10 9 –10 10 W/cm 2 . We demonstrated that as the incident laser intensity increases, the current emitted from the nano-tip first increases as a power function with an exponent of about 5 and then starts to roll over to an exponent of 3. This roll over is attributed to the Coulomb interaction between electrons emitted from the tip also known as the space charge. We also measured the photoemission electron energy spectra that show electrons with energies as high as ~10 eV. Based on the shape of the electron energy spectra, we conclude that the high-energy electrons are thermally emitted electrons due to ultrafast laser heating at the tip of the (N)UNCD pyramid tip cathode.
