Probing Non-Equilibrium Pair-Breaking and Quasiparticle Dynamics in Nb Superconducting Resonators Under Magnetic Fields

We conducted a comprehensive study of the non-equilibrium dynamics of Cooper pair breaking, quasiparticle (QP) generation, and relaxation in niobium (Nb) cut from superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavities, as well as various Nb resonator films from transmon qubits. Using ultrafast pump–probe spectroscopy, we were able to isolate the superconducting coherence and pair-breaking responses. Our results reveal both similarities and notable differences in the temperature- and magnetic-field-dependent dynamics of the SRF cavity and thin-film resonator samples. Moreover, femtosecond-resolved QP generation and relaxation under an applied magnetic field reveals a clear correlation between non-equilibrium QPs and the quality factor of resonators fabricated by using different deposition methods, such as DC sputtering and high-power impulse magnetron sputtering. These findings highlight the pivotal influence of fabrication techniques on the coherence and performance of Nb-based quantum devices, which are vital for applications in superconducting qubits and high-energy superconducting radio-frequency applications.

Improving neutrino-nuclei interaction models: Recommendations and case studies on Peelle’s Pertinent Puzzle

Improving the modeling of neutrino-nuclei interactions using data-driven methods is crucial for high-precision neutrino oscillation experiments. This paper investigates Peelle’s Pertinent Puzzle (PPP) in the context of neutrino measurements, a longstanding challenge to fitting theoretical models to experimental data. Inconsistencies in data-model comparisons hinder efforts to enhance the accuracy and reliability of model predictions. We analyze various sources contributing to these inconsistencies and propose strategies to address them, supported by practical case studies. We advocate for incorporating model fitting exercises as a standard practice in cross section publications to enhance the robustness of results. We use a common analysis framework to explore PPP-related challenges with MicroBooNE and T2K data in an unified manner. Our findings offer valuable insights for improving the accuracy and reliability of neutrino-nuclei interaction models, particularly by systematically tuning models using data.

Ionization profile monitors for the IOTA proton beam

Ionization profile monitors (IPMs) are widely used in accelerators for non-destructive and fast diagnostics of high energy particle beams. Two such monitors — one vertical and one horizontal — are being developed for installation in the IOTA storage ring at Fermilab. They will be used for turn-by-turn (microseconds scale) measurements of the 70 MeV/c IOTA proton beam sizes. Furthermore, in this paper we present the IPMs design (largely following the FNAL Booster IPMs which employ no external guiding magnetic fields), their mechanical, vacuum, and electric subsystems and DAQ, and discuss anticipated effects on the beams circulating in IOTA.

Synthesis of single-qutrit circuits from Clifford+𝑅 gates

Here, we present two deterministic compilation algorithms for single-qutrit unitaries with O ( log 1 / ɛ ) gate depth. Each algorithm selects a nearby approximation to the target unitary and then exactly synthesizes the approximation over the Clifford + R basis. The first algorithm exhaustively searches over the group; while the second algorithm searches only for Householder reflections. The exhaustive search algorithm yields an average R count of 2.193 ( 11 ) + 8.621 ( 7 ) log 10 ( 1 / ɛ ) , albeit with a time complexity of O ( ɛ − 4.4 ) . The Householder search algorithm results in a larger average R count of 3.20 ( 13 ) + 10.77 ( 3 ) log 10 ( 1 / ɛ ) at a reduced time complexity of O ( ɛ − 0.42 ) , greatly extending the reach in ɛ . These costs correspond asymptotically to 35% and 69% more non-Clifford gates compared with synthesizing the same unitary with two qubits. Such initial results are encouraging for using the R gate as the nontransversal gate for qutrit-based computation.

AC-LGADs Fermilab front-end electronics characterization

Here, we characterized the front-end electronics used to process high-frequency signals from low-gain avalanche diodes (LGADs) at the Fermilab Test Beam Facility. LGADs are silicon detectors employed for charged particle tracking, offering exceptional spatial and temporal resolution. The purpose of this characterization was to understand how the time resolution is influenced by the front-end electronics. To achieve this, we developed a setup capable of generating input signals with varying amplitudes. The output results demonstrated that signal processing by the front-end electronics plays a crucial role in enhancing time resolution. We showed that the time resolution achieved by the FEE board is better than 2 p s at the 1 σ level.

Signatures of enhanced superconducting properties in niobium cavities

Superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) niobium cavities are critical for modern particle accelerators, as well as for advancing superconducting quantum systems and enabling ultrasensitive searches for new physics. In this work, we report a systematic observation of an anomalous frequency dip in Nb cavities, which occurs at temperatures just below the critical temperature (𝑇𝑐 ), indicative of enhanced superconducting properties at 𝑇 ≪ 𝑇 𝑐 . The magnitude of this dip is strongly correlated with the rf surface resistance, impurity distribution near the surface, and 𝑇𝑐 . Additionally, we report measurements of the coherence peak in the ac conductivity of two Nb SRF cavities processed using distinct methods. By comparing recent theories developed to model this experimental data, we show that the frequency-dip feature, larger coherence peak height, and reduction in the temperature-dependent surface resistance with rf current occur at minimal but finite levels of disorder.

Measurements of the temperature and $E$-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background from the full 500-square-degree SPTpol dataset

Using the full four-year SPTpol 500 deg 2 dataset in both the 95 and 150 GHz frequency bands, we present measurements of the temperature and E-mode polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB), as well as the E-mode polarization autopower spectrum (EE) and temperature-E-mode cross-power spectrum (TE) in the angular multipole range 50 < ℓ < 8000. We find the SPTpol dataset to be self-consistent, passing several internal consistency tests based on maps, frequency bands, bandpowers, and cosmological parameters. The full SPTpol dataset is well-fit by the ΛCDM model, for which we find H 0 = 70.48 ± 2.16 km s -1 Mpc -1 and Ω m = 0.271 ± 0.026, when using only the SPTpol data and a Planck-based prior on the optical depth to reionization. The ΛCDM parameter constraints are consistent across the 95 GHz-only, 150 GHz-only, TE-only, and EE-only data splits. Between the ℓ < 1000 and ℓ > 1000 data splits, the ΛCDM parameter constraints are borderline consistent at the ∼2σ level. This consistency improves when including a parameter A L , the degree of lensing of the CMB inferred from the smearing of acoustic peaks. When marginalized over A L , the ΛCDM parameter constraints from SPTpol are consistent with those from Planck. In conclusion, the power spectra presented here are the most sensitive measurements of the lensed CMB damping tail to date for roughly ℓ > 1700 in TE and ℓ > 2000 in EE.

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory Data Preview 1

We present Rubin Data Preview 1 (DP1), the first data from the National Science Foundation–Department of Energy Vera C. Rubin Observatory, comprising raw and calibrated single-epoch images, coadds, difference images, detection catalogs, and ancillary data products. DP1 is based on 1792 optical–near-infrared exposures acquired over 48 distinct nights by the Rubin Commissioning Camera (LSSTComCam) on the Simonyi Survey Telescope at the Summit Facility on Cerro Pachón, Chile in late 2024. DP1 covers ∼15 deg 2 distributed across seven roughly equal-sized noncontiguous fields, each independently observed in six broad photometric bands, ugrizy. The median FWHM of the point-spread function across all bands is approximately 1"14, with the sharpest images reaching about 0." 58. The 5σ point-source depths for coadded images in the deepest field, the Extended Chandra Deep Field South, are u = 24.55, g = 26.18, r = 25.96, i = 25.71, z = 25.07, and y = 23.1. Other fields are no more than 2.2 mag shallower in any band, where they have nonzero coverage. DP1 contains approximately 2.3 million distinct astrophysical objects, of which 1.6 million are extended in at least one band in coadds, and 431 solar system objects, of which 93 are new discoveries. DP1 is approximately 3.5 TB in size and is available to Vera C. Rubin Observatory data rights holders via the Rubin Science Platform, a cloud-based environment for the analysis of petascale astronomical data. While small compared to future LSST releases, its high quality and diversity of data support a broad range of early science investigations ahead of full operations in 2026.

Final SeaQuest Results on the Flavor Asymmetry of the Proton Light-Quark Sea with Proton-Induced Drell-Yan Process

The Fermilab E906/SeaQuest collaboration performed measurements of the Drell-Yan process using 120 GeV proton beams bombarding liquid hydrogen and liquid deuterium targets. A combined analysis of all collected data was performed to obtain the final results for the 𝜎 𝑝⁢𝑑 /2⁢𝜎 𝑝⁢𝑝 Drell-Yan cross section ratio covering the kinematic region of 0.13 < 𝑥 <0.45. The 𝑥 dependencies of $\bar{d}$(𝑥)/$\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) and $\bar{d}$(𝑥) $-$ $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) are extracted from these cross section ratios. It is found that $\bar{d}$(𝑥) is greater than $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) over the entire measured 𝑥 range, with improved statistical accuracy compared to previous measurements. The new results on $\bar{d}$(𝑥)/$\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) and $\bar{d}$(𝑥) $-$ $\bar{𝑢}$⁡(𝑥) are compared to various parton distribution functions and theoretical calculations.

Dark matter and baryon asymmetry from monopole-axion interactions

We introduce a novel mechanism where the kinetic energy of a rotating axion can be dissipated by the interactions with dark magnetic monopoles. This mechanism leads to a framework where the QCD axion and dark monopoles account for the dark matter density, and the observed baryon asymmetry is generated through the rotating QCD axion via axiogenesis. The monopoles acquire masses from a nonzero axion field, and they can transition between different quantized dyonic levels in the presence of a rotating axion field. The axion kinetic energy is dissipated by the transition, and thus the axion abundance is depleted to the observed dark matter abundance. We predict that the axion decay constant should be below 10 9 GeV to explain the observed dark matter and baryon densities.

Benchmarking state-of-the-art theory and empirical models of pionless neutrino-argon scattering in GENIE

Upcoming experiments need improved simulations of neutrino scattering. This work uses the popular GENIE event generator to test a variety of neutrino interaction models against recent MicroBooNE measurements of pionless charged-current interactions. The GENIE code can easily interchange model components, including nucleon form factor parameterizations, quasielastic cross-section calculations, treatments of the nuclear ground state and hadronic final-state interactions. Leveraging this software capability in comparisons with MicroBooNE data, the performance of some of GENIE’s most theoretically sophisticated model components is evaluated and contrasted with more empirically-driven alternatives.
