Effect of Al substitution on the magnetocaloric properties of Ni-Co-Mn-Sn multifunctional alloys

Ni-Mn-based metamagnetic shape memory alloys have been extensively studied due to their multifunctional properties including magnetocaloric effect (MCE), magnetoresistance effect, and magnetic-field-induced strain. However, the large intrinsic thermal hysteresis of these alloys sets a limit on further development for practical applications. Here, with a few atomic percent Al substitution, we greatly reduced the thermal hysteresis and transformation temperature interval while maintaining the large magnetization difference (ΔM) between austenite and martensite. The simultaneous achievement of a large ΔM and low thermal hysteresis leads to a remarkable enhancement in MCE upon Al substitution, and a maximum magnetic entropy change of 31.6 J/kg K is achieved under a field of 5 T in Ni 39 Co 11 Mn 40 Sn 8 Al 2 . Furthermore, our in situ high-energy X-ray diffraction experiments show that the Ni 39 Co 11 Mn 40 Sn 8 Al 2 has good geometric compatibility between austenite and martensite, which accounts for the reduced thermal hysteresis in this alloy. This study is instructive for the development of high-performance magnetocaloric materials in the metamagnetic shape memory alloys.

Enhanced negative thermal expansion of boron-doped Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 28.97 B 0.03 alloy

Enhanced negative thermal expansion (NTE) properties are achieved by introducing a little amount of boron in the Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 28.97 B 0.03 alloy. As a result, this alloy shows a giant NTE coefficient of alpha(1) = -79.7 x 10 -6 K -1 in a wide temperature range from 277 K to 136 K. Compared to the NTE characteristics in Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 29 , the NTE operation temperature window has expanded by 74% with the corresponding coefficient of thermal expansion increased by 57% within the NTE temperature window for the boron-doped Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga28.97B0.03. Additionally, in-situ synchrotron high-energy X-ray diffraction results suggest that by boron substitution, the large unit cell volume change across martensitic transformation and the wide phase transition temperature interval are responsible for the pronounced NTE behavior in Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 28.97 B 0.03 . Moreover, for the Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 28.97 B 0.03 NTE material, the compressive strength and strain are significantly improved compared with that of Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 29 . The present study indicates that Fe 43 Mn 28 Ga 28.97 B 0.03 with enhanced NTE across martensitic transformation may be used for practical application as thermal-expansion compensators.

Fabrication and durability characterization of superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused surfaces

Hypothesis: Practical applications of non-wetting surfaces require good mechanical durability in the wet environments for which they are intended to be used. Durability of non-wetting surfaces is influenced by the surface features, interaction with the functionalization agent, and the lubricant properties that can be tuned independently to identify optimal combination. Experiments: In this study, superhydrophobic and lubricant-infused surfaces are fabricated on copper tubes using chemical etching and electrodeposition texturing techniques, six different functionalizing agents, and five different infused lubricants. Through 180 fabrication combinations and 102 durability tests, each parameter is systematically studied for contributions to initial non-wetting behavior and its durability in heated, wet environment, under high-energy water jet impingement, and under accelerated flow conditions. Findings: Among the adsorbing and curing functionalization agents investigated, n-Hexadecyl mercaptan that belongs to the sulfhydryl group and Sylgard-184, respectively, showed high durability in heated water immersion and under jet impingement tests. For lubricant-infused surfaces, lubricants with high surface tension demonstrated high durability in heated water immersion test, whereas durability in hydrodynamic conditions is closely correlated to lubricant viscosity. Results showed that a lubricant-infused surface will maintain its non-wetting properties in dropwise condensation conditions for approximately 1.5 years.

Permutation-adapted complete and independent basis for atomic cluster expansion descriptors

Atomic cluster expansion (ACE) methods provide a systematic way to describe particle local environments of arbitrary body order. For practical applications it is often required that the basis of cluster functions be symmetrized with respect to rotations and permutations. Existing methodologies yield sets of symmetrized functions that are over-complete. These methodologies thus require an additional numerical procedure, such as singular value decomposition (SVD), to eliminate redundant functions. In this work, it is shown that analytical linear relationships for subsets of cluster functions may be derived using recursion and permutation properties of generalized Wigner symbols. From these relationships, subsets (blocks) of cluster functions can be selected such that, within each block, functions are guaranteed to be linearly independent. It is conjectured that this block-wise independent set of permutation-adapted rotation and permutation invariant (PA-RPI) functions forms a complete, independent basis for ACE. Along with the first analytical proofs of block-wise linear dependence of ACE cluster functions and other theoretical arguments, numerical results are offered to demonstrate this. The utility of the method is demonstrated in the development of an ACE interatomic potential for tantalum. Using the new basis functions in combination with Bayesian compressive sensing sparse regression, some high degree descriptors are observed to persist and help achieve high-accuracy models.

One-sweep moment-based semi-implicit-explicit integration for gray thermal radiation transport

Thermal radiation transport (TRT) is a time dependent, high dimensional partial integro-differential equation. In practical applications such as inertial confinement fusion, TRT is coupled to other physics such as hydrodynamics, plasmas, etc., and the timescales one is interested in capturing are often much slower than the radiation timescale. As a result, TRT is treated implicitly, and due to its stiffness and high dimensionality, is often a dominant computational cost in multiphysics simulations. Here we develop a new approach for implicit-explicit (IMEX) integration of gray TRT in the deterministic SN setting, which requires only one sweep per stage, with the simplest first-order method requiring only one sweep per time step. The partitioning of equations is done via a moment-based high-order low-order formulation of TRT, where the streaming operator and first two moments are used to capture the asymptotic stiff regimes of the streaming limit and diffusion limit. Absorption-reemission is treated explicitly, and although stiff, is sufficiently damped by the implicit solve that we achieve stable accurate time integration without incorporating the coupling of the high order and low order equations implicitly. Due to nonlinear coupling of the high-order and low-order equations through temperature-dependent opacities, to facilitate IMEX partitioning and higher-order methods, we use a semi-implicit integration approach amenable to nonlinear partitions. In conclusion, results are demonstrated on thick Marshak and crooked pipe benchmark problems, demonstrating orders of magnitude improvement in accuracy and wallclock compared with the standard first-order implicit integration typically used.

Revealing the working mechanism of a multi-functional block copolymer binder for lithium-sulfur batteries

The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most promising substitutes for current energy storage systems because of its low cost, high theoretical capacity, and high energy density. However, the high solubility of intermediate products (i.e., lithium polysulfides) and the resultant shuttle effect lead to rapidly fading capacity and a low coulombic efficiency, which hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this study, block copolymers are constructed with both an ethylene oxide unit and a styrene unit and then used as binders for Li-S batteries. Electrochemical performance improvements are attributed to the synergistic effects contributed by the different units of the block copolymer. Here, the ethylene oxide unit traps polysulfide, which bonds strongly with the intermediate lithium polysulfide, and enhances the transport of lithium ions to reach high capacity. Meanwhile, the styrene unit maintains cathode integrity by improving the mechanical properties and elasticity of the constructed block copolymer to accommodate the large volume changes. By enabling multiple functions via different units in the polymer chain, high sulfur utilization is achieved, polysulfide diffusion is confined, and the shuttle effect is suppressed during the cycle life of Li-S batteries, as revealed by operando ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

Bimetallic NiCo boride nanoparticles confined in a MXene network enable efficient ambient ammonia electrosynthesis

Ambient electrocatalytic nitrogen fixation is an emerging technology for green ammonia synthesis, but the absence of optimized, stable and performant catalysts can render its practical application challenging. Herein, bimetallic NiCo boride nanoparticles confined in MXene are shown to accomplish high-performance nitrogen reduction electrolysis. Taking advantage of the synergistic effect in specific compositions with unique electronic d and p orbits and typical architecture of rich nanosized particles embedded in the interconnected conductive network, the synthesized MXene@NiCoB composite demonstrates extensive improvements in nitrogen molecule chemisorption, active area exposure and charge transport. As a result, optimal NH 3 yield rate of 38.7 μg h -1 mgcat. -1 and Faradaic efficiency of 6.92% are acquired in 0.1 M Na 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Moreover, the great catalytic performance can be almost entirely maintained in the cases of repeatedly-cycled and long-term electrolysis. Theoretical investigations reveal that the nitrogen reduction reaction on MXene@NiCoB catalyst proceeds according to the distal pathway, with a distinctly-reduced energy barrier relative to the Co 2 B counterpart. In conclusion, this work may inspire a new route towards the rational catalyst design for the nitrogen reduction reaction.

Intrinsic and hard magnetic properties of (Sm 1-x R x )-Fe-Co-V alloys (R = Gd, Zr, and Y)

SmFe 12 -based compounds with the ThMn 12 -type structure have a great potential as future rare-earth-lean permanent magnets. However, their reliance on stabilizing non-magnetic elements has impeded practical applications. Therefore, elements such as Gd, Y, and Zr have gained popularity as candidates to minimize the need for stabilizing elements by reducing the formation energy of the ThMn 12 (1:12) phase. Here, this study examines the effect of Gd, Y, and Zr on the intrinsic and hard magnetic properties in (Sm 1-x R x ) 1.2 Fe 8.4 Co 2.1 V 1.5 (or with nominal composition of (Sm 1-x R x ) 9.1 Fe 63.6 Co 15.9 V 11.4 ) with a single 1:12 phase for 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3. Notably, samples substituted with Gd exhibit an enhanced temperature dependence of the magnetic properties.

Evaluation of HVAC & refrigeration system fault behaviors and impacts: A systematic review

Achieving the goals of green buildings critically depends on the fault-free operation of heating, ventilation and air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems. However, faults frequently occur in these systems, causing a range of negative consequences, including increased energy consumption, diminished operational performance, compromised indoor environmental quality, higher operational costs, and shortened system lifespan. The evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts plays a critical role in revealing fault characteristics and consequently supports many research areas, including the design of the high-performance equipment, development of fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) and robust control approaches, as well as the enhancement of maintenance decision-making activities. This paper systematically reviews 112 research publications that reported the analysis and evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts in HVAC&R systems over the past thirty years. Here, we designed a review approach to address five crucial research questions, namely: 1) the objectives of analysis and evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts, 2) data sources, 3) equipment/system types and fault types, 4) evaluation methods including evaluation measures and associated metrics, and 5) challenges and future directions in the research on evaluating of fault behaviors and impacts. In-depth discussions on these questions help bridge the gap between the evaluation of fault behaviors and impacts and their practical applications, such as the development of high-performance systems, fault models, FDD methods, and maintenance decision-making tools within the HVAC&R FDD domain.

A two-dimensional analytical unit cell model for redox flow battery evaluation and optimization

Cell performance optimization is important for improving the overall system efficiency of a redox flow battery. To gain better insights into key controlling factors of system efficiency, this work first proposed a theoretical model for a unit flow battery cell by extending a two-dimensional analytic model to a full battery cell. Such a model is then used for cell performance optimization after validating it with experimental and numerical modeling data. With the model results, the activation, equilibrium, and pump energy losses are identified as the dominant sources of battery energy losses. Further, a guideline for reducing these sources is also proposed. Following the guideline, the mass transport coefficient is shown as a key control factor of the equilibrium energy loss and Coulombic efficiency (CE). Approaches are then proposed to improve CE and the overall system efficiency. The mass transport is also revealed as the mechanism of pump rate optimization where an optimal pump rate significantly reduces the equilibrium energy loss. With both low equilibrium and pump energy losses, an optimal electrode porosity or specific area design can further improve a battery's system efficiency based on an optimal porosity predicted by the present model. The model also demonstrates distinct behaviors and overestimation in the system efficiency when reduced to a zero-dimensional model with neglected mass transport resistance. With the new model, the guideline, and new insights, this work provides a reliable and efficient tool for the evaluation and optimization of redox flow battery design in practical applications.

High performance porous Si anode enabled by an organic-solvent assisted etching process

Silicon (Si) is a promising anode for the next generation of lithium-ion batteries, but its large volume changes (~300 %) during cycling hindered its practical applications. One method to improve its stability is to etch micron sized Si/SiO 2 particles to form porous Si (p-Si) and accommodate volume changes internally. However, the conventional HF etching method generates excess gas/heat and is difficult to scale up. Herein, we developed an organic-solvent-assisted HF etching process (O-HF) using a mixture of benzene and saturated HF aqueous solution. The organic solvent can be preferentially absorbed on the surface of Si/SiO 2 powder so etching rate of SiO 2 can be controlled to avoid rapid gas/heat generation. This method can also prevent over-etching of Si by minimizing direct contact/react between water and newly exposed Si. Si||NMC622 cells using carbon coated p-Si particles prepared by optimized O-HF etching process demonstrate a capacity retention of 82.0 % after 500 cycles, which is much better than those prepared by conventional HF etching (73.7 %). The thickness of Si anode increases only ~10 % during the initial lithiation, which is comparable with those of graphite anode. In conclusion, the O-HF etching strategy developed in this work can also be applied to the etching of a broad range of materials.

Etching-assisted upcycling of Ni-lean to Ni-rich cathode materials

Upcycling is recognized as a sustainable recycling approach for spent lithium-ion batteries. However, existing upcycling methods typically involve intricate pretreatment or post-treatment steps, complicating their practical application. Here, in this study, we propose a straightforward, etching-assisted upcycling method that effectively transforms polycrystalline Ni-lean cathodes into high-performance single crystal Ni-rich cathodes. During the etching step, nickel acetate was dissolved into acetic acid and then polycrystalline NMC111 are etched in the solution. Finally, polycrystalline NMC111 are converted into single crystal particles coated with amorphous nickel acetate. This significantly enhances elemental diffusion during subsequent sintering by minimizing both particle size and the contact distance between NMC111 and nickel acetate. As elemental diffusion is improved and acetate ions decompose completely during sintering, the process requires neither additional pretreatment nor post-treatment. The resulting cathode materials (Etched-UP622) exhibit superior structural and electrochemical properties compared to the Control622, achieving an energy density of 719.7 Wh/kg, approximately 56.7 mAh/g higher than Control622 and 125.5 Wh/kg higher than NMC111. Etched-UP622 also delivers higher discharge capacity, improved rate performance and cycling stability, surpassing Control622 and NMC111. Meanwhile, NMC811 also can be synthesized by the proposed strategy, and the discharge capacity can reach 166.9 mAh/g at 1C, similar to 14 mAh/g higher than Control811. Overall, this etching-assisted strategy simplifies the upcycling process and offers a scalable, sustainable route for producing high-quality cathode materials.

Vanadium-enhanced Na 2 FePO 4 F cathodes for high-performance sodium-ion batteries

Sodium fluorophosphate Na 2 FePO 4 F holds great potential for sodium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical capacity, excellent structural stability, abundant resources, and affordability. However, its poor electronic and ionic conductivities limit its practical applications. Therefore, ion doping and carbon coating have been employed as synergistic strategies in this study to overcome these limitations. A one-step, energy-efficient solid-state method using sucrose as a carbon coating source was used to synthesize Na 2 FePO 4 F/C (NFPF/C) and its doped variant, Na 2 Fe 0.85 V 0.1 PO 4 F/C (NFVPF/C). 23 Na-MAS-NMR spectra confirm the existence of two distinct sites for sodium (Na1/Na2). The ex-situ 23 Na-MAS-NMR performed at different states-of-charge reveals the activity of only one sodium. The scanning electron microscopy findings reveal a reduction in the particle size with V-introduction, enhancing the energetic performances. NFVPF/C delivers higher specific capacity of 122 mAh g −1 compared to 116 mAh g −1 for NFPF/C at 0.1C. It also demonstrates improved cycling stability, retaining 81 % of its initial capacity after 120 cycles, in contrast to 46 % for the pristine material. The doped phase outperforms the pristine at higher current rates, delivering specific capacities of 81 and 55 mAh g −1 at 2C and 3C, respectively, compared to 35 and 17 mAh g −1 for NFPF/C.

Interface-engineered (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy nanocomposites for superior lithium storage: Mechanism and performance

The practical application of graphite anodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is constrained by low specific capacity (372 mAh g -1 ) and sluggish kinetics. Here, to address these limitations, our present study focuses on high-entropy oxides (HEOs), which offer high theoretical capacity and structural stability. We synthesized spinel-structured (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 nanoparticles via a solution combustion method and fabricated an (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposite through in-situ polymerization. Our electrochemical tests demonstrate that the PPy modification significantly enhances performance. While the pristine (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 delivered 445 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles at 100 mA g −1 and 350 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g −1 , the (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy composite achieved 695 mAh g −1 after 100 cycles and maintained 675 mAh g −1 after 1000 cycles. Furthermore, the composite improved rate capacity at 1000 mA g −1 from 211 mAh g −1 to 403 mAh g −1 . This work highlights how conductive and flexible polymer modifications can dramatically improve the electrochemical properties of HEOs. The developed (AlMnCoNiZn) 3 O 4 @PPy composite provides a promising direction for designing advanced anodes to meet next-generation energy storage demands.

Exploring the effectiveness of a back-supporting exosuit: Trunk muscle activity and user experience in controlled and real-world shoveling scenarios

Introduction: This study evaluates the effectiveness of a passive wearable exosuit (HeroWear Apex) in reducing lumbar muscle effort while shoveling. Method: Two experiments were conducted, involving: (1) moving calibrated sandbags at a predefined pace in a laboratory, and (2) moving loose dirt in an in-field setting. Studies were designed to emulate real-world shoveling conditions at Department of Energy - Environmental Management sites. Muscle activity of the lumbar and oblique muscles was analyzed, along with user perceptions. Due to the asymmetric nature of shoveling, analysis of muscle activity was split between the weighted and unweighted sides, with the weighted side being defined as the side of the body closest to the head of the shovel in a neutral posture. Results: While donning the device, both experiments showed a significant decrease in muscle activity for at least one lumbar muscle on the weighted side. Participants rated the device with a high usability score, and perceived exertion ratings were significantly lower while wearing the exosuit. While opinions varied regarding the device’s helpfulness, participants felt the device was comfortable and did not hinder motion during the task. Practical applications: The reduction in back muscle activity associated with wearing the exosuit has the potential to reduce muscle fatigue resulting from repetitive motions.

Synthesis and Mg 2+ deintercalation in manganese spinel nanocrystals

Transition metal oxides are promising materials as cathodes for divalent batteries with high capacity under high voltage. A major challenge is the sluggish kinetics of intercalation of divalent cations into the oxide host. Tailoring of the size, composition and crystal structure of oxides is a necessary strategy to alleviate these barriers, which challenges our control of their synthesis. In this work, we selectively synthesize spinel-type Mg x Mn 3-x O 4 nanocrystals with different Mg/Mn ratios and investigate their ability to electrochemically shuttle Mg 2+ ions. Crystal-chemical characterization of the reaction outcomes was conducted with X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, electron microscopy, and elemental analysis. Both 5 nm thick MgMn 2 O 4 nanosheets and 10 nm Mg 0.41 Mn 2.59 O 4 nanocubes underwent reversible Mg 2+ deintercalation, yet no obvious reaction was observed in 60 nm Mg 1.2 Mn 1.8 O 4 nanocubes. Our results suggest that both the size of the spinel nanocrystals and the Mg/Mn ratios play a role in the observed behaviour. The advances in the synthesis of spinel oxide nanocrystals achieved, and their correlation with Mg 2+ deintercalation, pave the way toward the precise synthesis of multivalent cathode materials that fundamentally overcome barriers to practical application.

Understanding metal propagation in solid electrolytes due to mixed ionic-electronic conduction

Metal penetration into a solid electrolyte (SE) is one of the critical problems impeding the practical application of solid-state batteries. In this study, we investigate the conditions under which electronic conductivity of the SE can lead to metal deposition and fracture within the SE. Three different stages for void filling (metal plating initiation, metal growth, and metal compression) in the SE are identified. We show that a micron-size isolated void in the SE near the anode can be quickly filled in by metal and fractured when the developed pressure in the void grows larger than the maximum pressure the SE material can sustain. We find that the anode voltage and applied current density play a significant role in determining the vulnerability to metal deposition. We discuss several strategies to prevent electronic conductivity-driven metal propagation in electrolytes that are not fully dense, including the densified layers between the anode and SE.

Reticular chemistry for the rational design of mechanically robust mesoporous merged-net metal-organic frameworks

Access to metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with enhanced mechanical stability is key to their successful deployment in practical applications. However, the high porosity of the material often affects mechanical stability. In this article, to achieve highly porous MOFs with enhanced mechanical stability, we explored the merged-net approach where two relatively fragile frameworks were merged into a robust MOF structure. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach by computationally evaluating mechanical properties of sph-MOFs with varying lengths of linkers. Prominently, we pinpoint the significance of triangular rigidity on the robustness of large-pore MOFs and, subsequently, designed and synthesized a rare earth (RE)-based RE-sph-MOF-5 by the reticulation of hexanuclear RE clusters, tritopic linkers, and unprecedentedly large planar hexatopic linkers containing 19 phenyl rings. The mechanical properties of sph-MOFs were characterized and quantified using amplitude-frequency modulation (AM-FM) bimodal atomic force microscopy (AFM) analyses. Markedly, the mesoporous RE-sph-MOF-5 expresses high mechanical stability despite its large mesoporous cavities.
