The Del Rio ataxite, Texas

Basic data are presented on the Del Rio, Nordheim, and Monahans ataxites found in Texas. Results are reported for bulk-chemistry analysis, metallographic observations, and electron-microprobe analysis of the Del Rio meteorite. It is shown that Del Rio is distinctly different from the other two ataxites in terms of nickel, phosphorous, and carbon content, and is composed of at least three coarse grains in different crystallographic orientations. All the kamacite in Del Rio is found to have transformation structures that are probable shock products, and minor inclusions of daubreelite, schreibersite, and troilite are observed. It is concluded that Del Rio was apparently mildly shocked prior to its fall.

A Proposed Mechanism for the Thermal Denaturation of a Recombinant Bacillus Halmapalus Alpha-amylase - the Effect of Calcium Ions

The thermal stability of a recombinant alpha-amylase from Bacillus halmapalus alpha-amylase (BHA) has been investigated using circular dichroism spectroscopy (CD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). This alpha-amylase is homologous to other Bacillus alpha-amylases where previous crystallographic studies have identified the existence of 3 calcium binding sites in the structure. Denaturation of BHA is irreversible with a Tm of approximately 89 C, and DSC thermograms can be described using a one-step irreversible model. A 5 C increase in T(sub m) in the presence of 10 fold excess CaCl2 was observed. However, a concomitant increase in the tendency to aggregate was also observed. The presence of 30-40 fold excess calcium chelator (EDTA or EGTA) results in a large destabilization of BHA corresponding to about 40 C lower T(sub m), as determined by both CD and DSC. Ten fold excess EGTA reveals complex DSC thermograms corresponding to both reversible and irreversible transitions, which possibly originate from different populations of BHA:calcium complexes. The observations in the present study have, in combination with structural information of homologous alpha-amylases, provided the basis for the proposal of a simple denaturation mechanism of BHA. The proposed mechanism describes the irreversible thermal denaturation of different BHA:calcium complexes and the calcium binding equilibrium involved. Furthermore, the model accounts for a temperature induced reversible structural change associated with calcium binding.

Crystallinity of Fe-Ni Sulfides in Carbonaceous Chondrites

The main long-term goal of this research is to understand the physical conditions in the early solar nebula through the detailed characterization of a key class of mineral present in all primitive materials: Fe-Ni sulfides [1&2]. Fe-Ni sulfides can take dozens of structures, depending on the temperature of formation, as well as other physico-chemical factors which are imperfectly understood. Add to this the additional varying factor of Ni content, and we have a potentially sensitive cosmothermometer [3]. Unfortunately, this tool requires exact knowledge of the crystal structure of each grain being considered, and there have been few (none?) studies of the detailed structures of sulfides in chondritic materials. We report here on coordinated compositional and crystallographic investigation of Fe-Ni sulfides in diverse carbonaceous chondrites, initially Acfer 094 (the most primitive CM2 [4]) Tagish Lake (a unique type C2 [5]), a C1 lithology in Kaidun [6], Bali (oxidized CV3 [7]), and Efremovka (reduced CV3 [7]).

Fusion proteins as alternate crystallization paths to difficult structure problems

The three-dimensional structure of a peptide fusion product with glutathione transferase from Schistosoma japonicum (SjGST) has been solved by crystallographic methods to 2.5 A resolution. Peptides or proteins can be fused to SjGST and expressed in a plasmid for rapid synthesis in Escherichia coli. Fusion proteins created by this commercial method can be purified rapidly by chromatography on immobilized glutathione. The potential utility of using SjGST fusion proteins as alternate paths to the crystallization and structure determination of proteins is demonstrated.

Cryogenic X-ray crystallographic studies of biomacromolecules at Turkish Light Source " Turkish DeLight "

X-ray crystallography is a robust and powerful structural biology technique that provides high-resolution atomic structures of biomacromolecules. Scientists use this technique to unravel mechanistic and structural details of biological macromolecules (e.g., proteins, nucleic acids, protein complexes, protein-nucleic acid complexes, or large biological compartments). Since its inception, single-crystal cryocrystallography has never been performed in Türkiye due to the lack of a single-crystal X-ray diffractometer. The X-ray diffraction facility recently established at the University of Health Sciences, Istanbul, Türkiye will enable Turkish and international researchers to easily perform high-resolution structural analysis of biomacromolecules from single crystals. Here, we describe the technical and practical outlook of a state-of-the-art home-source X-ray, using lysozyme as a model protein. The methods and practice described in this article can be applied to any biological sample for structural studies. Therefore, this article will be a valuable practical guide from sample preparation to data analysis.

Disorderly Conduct of Benzamide IV: Crystallographic and Computational Analysis of High Entropy Polymorphs of Small Molecules

Benzamide, a simple derivative of benzoic acid and a common intermediate of pharmaceutical compounds, was reported to form two polymorphs in 1832, but the single crystal structure of the more stable form was not solved until 1959. Nearly 50 years later, the second form was characterized by powder diffraction, followed shortly thereafter by characterization of a third form, a polytype of the most thermodynamically stable Form I. These two new forms, Forms II and III, are metastable. Herein, we describe a fourth polymorph, Form IV, discovered by melt crystallization concurrently with its crystallization under confinement at small length scales (<10 nm), where it is stable indefinitely. Form III exists under confinement in larger pores, and melting point data for different pore sizes corroborate the existence of Form IV below 10 nm. Form IV is highly disordered, precluding indexing of powder diffraction data other than hk0 reflections. Nonetheless, a combination of powder X-ray diffraction and computational crystal structure prediction reveals that Form IV contains a 2D motif resembling that of Form II, but with longrange order in the third dimension masked by ubiquitous stacking faults. This approach relies on distilling a large number of candidate structures to a few possible disorder models based on benzamide tetrads that organize in 2D parquet-like tiles, with organization along the third dimension, that can be modeled with various stacking fault configurations having distinct intermolecular interactions and translations in the dimension orthogonal to the tiling planes. These observations reveal a bewildering crystallographic complexity for such a simple molecule. Nonetheless, the approach described herein demonstrates that challenging structures that may be abandoned prematurely because of poor crystallinity, twinning, or disorder can be solved.

Iridate Li8IrO 6 : An Antiferromagnetic Insulator

In this work, a polycrystalline iridate Li 8 IrO 6 material was prepared via heating Li 2 O and IrO 2 starting materials in a sealed quartz tube at 650 °C for 48 h. The structure was determined from Rietveld refinement of room-temperature powder neutron diffraction data. Li 8 IrO 6 adopts the nonpolar space group $R\bar{3}$ with Li atoms occupying the tetrahedral and octahedral sites, which is supported by the electron diffraction and solid-state 7Li NMR. This results in a crystal structure consisting of LiO 4 tetrahedral layers alternating with mixed IrO 6 and LiO 6 octahedral layers along the crystallographic c -axis. The +4 oxidation state of Ir 4+ was confirmed by near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy. An in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction study of Li 8 IrO 6 indicates that the sample is stable up to 1000 °C and exhibits no structural transitions. Magnetic measurements suggest long-range antiferromagnetic ordering with a Néel temperature (TN) of 4 K, which is corroborated by heat capacity measurements. The localized effective moment $μ_{\text{eff}}$ (Ir) = 1.73 $μ_{\text{B}}$ and insulating character indicate that Li 8 IrO 6 is a correlated insulator. First-principles calculations support the nonpolar crystal structure and reveal the insulating behavior both in paramagnetic and antiferromagnetic states.

Towards the extraction of the crystal cell parameters from pair distribution function profiles

The approach based on atomic pair distribution function (PDF) has revolutionized structural investigations by X-ray/electron diffraction of nano or quasi-amorphous materials, opening up the possibility of exploring short-range order. However, the ab initio crystal structural solution by the PDF is far from being achieved due to the difficulty in determining the crystallographic properties of the unit cell. A method for estimating the crystal cell parameters directly from a PDF profile is presented, which is composed of two steps: first, the type of crystal cell is inferred using machine-learning approaches applied to the PDF profile; second, the crystal cell parameters are extracted by means of multivariate analysis combined with vector superposition techniques. The procedure has been validated on a large number of PDF profiles calculated from known crystal structures and on a small number of measured PDF profiles. The lattice determination step has been benchmarked by a comprehensive exploration of different classifiers and different input data. The highest performance is obtained using the k -nearest neighbours classifier applied to whole PDF profiles. Descriptors calculated from the PDF profiles by recurrence quantitative analysis produce results that can be interpreted in terms of PDF properties, and the significance of each descriptor in determining the prediction is evaluated. The cell parameter extraction step depends on the cell metric rather than its type. Monometric, dimetric and trimetric cells have top-1 estimates that are correct 40, 20 and 5% of the time, respectively. Promising results were obtained when analysing real nanocrystals, where unit cells close to the true ones are found within the top-1 ranked solution in the case of monometric cells and within the top-6 ranked solutions in the case of dimetric cells, even in the presence of a crystalline impurity with a weight fraction up to 40%.

A-type antiferromagnetic order in MnBi 4 Te 7 and MnBi 6 Te 10 single crystals

MnBi 4 Te 7 and MnBi 6 Te 10 are two members with n = 2 and 3 in the family of MnBi 2 n Te 3 n + 1 where the n = 1 member, MnBi 2 Te 4 , has been intensively investigated as the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator. In this work, we report the A-type antiferromagnetic order in these two compounds by measuring magnetic properties, electrical and thermal transport, specific heat, and single-crystal neutron diffraction. Both compounds order into an A-type antiferromagnetic structure as does MnBi 2 Te 4 with ferromagnetic planes coupled antiferromagnetically along the crystallographic c axis. While no evidence for any in-plane ordered moment is found for MnBi 2 Te 4 or MnBi 6 Te 10 , weak reflections at half- L positions along the [0 0 L ] direction are observed for MnBi 4 Te 7 suggesting an in-plane ordered moment around 0.15 μ B / Mn . The ordering temperature, T N , is 13 K for MnBi 4 Te 7 and 11 K for MnBi 6 Te 10 . The magnetic order is also manifested in the anisotropic magnetic properties. Furthermore, for both compounds, the interlayer coupling is weak and a spin-flip transition occurs when a magnetic field of around 1.6 kOe is applied along the c axis at 2 K. As observed in MnBi 2 Te 4 , when cooling across T N , no anomaly was observed in the temperature dependence of thermopower. On the other hand, critical scattering effects are observed in thermal conductivity although the effect is less pronounced than that in MnBi 2 Te 4 .

Hierarchical crack buffering triples ductility in eutectic herringbone high-entropy alloys

In human-made malleable materials, microdamage such as cracking usually limits material lifetime. Some biological composites, such as bone, have hierarchical microstructures that tolerate cracks but cannot withstand high elongation. Here, we demonstrate a directionally solidified eutectic high-entropy alloy (EHEA) that successfully reconciles crack tolerance and high elongation. The solidified alloy has a hierarchically organized herringbone structure that enables bionic-inspired hierarchical crack buffering. This effect guides stable, persistent crystallographic nucleation and growth of multiple microcracks in abundant poor-deformability microstructures. Hierarchical buffering by adjacent dynamic strain–hardened features helps the cracks to avoid catastrophic growth and percolation. Our self-buffering herringbone material yields an ultrahigh uniform tensile elongation (~50%), three times that of conventional nonbuffering EHEAs, without sacrificing strength.

Preliminary crystallographic studies of four crystal forms of serum albumin

Several crystal forms of serum albumin suitable for three-dimensional structure determination have been grown. These forms include crystals of recombinant and wild-type human serum albumin, baboon serum albumin, and canine serum albumin. The intrinsic limits of X-ray diffraction for these crystals are in the range 0.28-0.22 nm. Two of the crystal forms produced from human and canine albumin include incorporated long-chain fatty acids. Molecular replacement experiments have been successfully conducted on each crystal form using the previously determined atomic coordinates of human serum albumin illustrating the conserved tertiary structure.

Planar Defect Layers Template a High-Pressure InBi Polymorph

The short- and long-range order of III–V materials under high pressure has long been the subject of debate, with advancements in structural characterization leading to significant revisions to the accepted structural models. Despite these revisions, previous high-pressure structural assignments in the In–Bi system include the site-disordered β-Sn structure type, a structure type demonstrated to be nonexistent in analogous III–V systems. While X-ray diffraction is consistent with site disordering in InBi at high pressure, cluster expansion calculations indicate that disordering requires temperatures above 3000 K. Here, we propose InBi as a model material for studying unique high-pressure planar defects due to its highly anisotropic stress-dependent properties and structure. Specifically, we identify two sets of planar defects that mimic the diffraction pattern of a site disordered β-Sn structure type and are compatible with the calculated disorder barrier. We derive these defects by symmetry relations over crystallographic transitions. Density functional theory calculations of the proposed defects suggest that these defects are stabilized by diminishing interlayer separations with pressure. Further, we find that one of the proposed defects closely resembles a bulk high-pressure phase of InBi, InBi-ϵ, and we assert that the proposed defects order upon heating, acting as a template for InBi-ϵ growth. The proposed defects and their electronic structure provide a basis for the trend of superconducting critical temperature with increasing pressure. These methods for identifying defects are generalizable to other materials with reports of site disorder at high pressure, prompting a broader search for related high-pressure defects.

Local structural distortions drive magnetic molecular field in compositionally complex spinel oxide

Understanding how local distortions determine the functional properties of high entropy materials, containing five or more elements at the same crystallographic site, is an open challenge. We address this for a compositionally complex spinel oxide (Mn 0.2 Co 0.2 Ni 0.2 Cu 0.2 Zn 0.2 )Cr 2 O 4 (A 5 Cr 2 O 4 ). By comparatively examining extended X-ray absorption fine structure on A 5 Cr 2 O 4 and its parent counterparts, ACr 2 O 4 , along with density functional theory calculations for multiple configurations, we find that the element-specific distortions go beyond the first neighbor. Specifically, the strong Jahn-Teller distortion present in CuCr 2 O 4 is found to be completely suppressed in A 5 Cr 2 O 4 even locally. Instead, there is a broad distribution of Cu-O and Cu-Cr bond distances, while other A-O distances acquire certain specific values. This study demonstrates the additional flexibility of a cationic sublattice in maintaining a uniform long-range structure, in contrast to previous reports showing only the accommodative anionic sublattice. The mean-field magnetic interactions of A 5 Cr 2 O 4 exhibit a striking resemblance to those of NiCr 2 O 4 , despite the presence of multiple magnetic ions and variable bond lengths. This originates from the comparability of bond lengths around Cr in both materials. Our study paves the way for a deeper understanding of the impact of local structural distortions on the physical properties of compositionally complex quantum materials.

Synthesis, Crystal and Electronic Structure of the New Ternary Compound Ca3InAs3

Crystals of a new ternary compound in the Ca-In-As family, Ca3InAs3, have been successfully synthesized via flux growth techniques. This is only the third known compound between the respective elements. As elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction measurements, Ca3InAs3 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pnma (No. 62, Pearson symbol oP28) with unit cell parameters a = 12.296(2) Å, b = 4.2553(7) Å, and c = 13.735(2) Å. The smallest building motifs of the structure are InAs4 tetrahedra, which are connected to one another by shared As corners, forming infinite [InAs2As2/2] chains. The latter propagate along the crystallographic b-axis. The As-In-As bond angles within the InAs4 tetrahedra deviate from the ideal 109.5° value and range from 98.12(2)° to 116.53(2)°, attesting to a small distortion from the regular tetrahedral geometry. Electronic structure calculations indicate the opening of a bandgap, consistent with the expected (Ca2+)3(In3+)(As3–)3 formula breakdown based on conventional oxidation numbers. The calculations also show that the Ca–As interactions are an intermediate between covalent and ionic, while providing evidence of strong covalent features of the In–As interactions. Weak s-p hybridization of In states was observed, supporting the experimentally found deviation of the InAs4 moiety from the ideal tetrahedral symmetry.

Understanding the structure and mechanism of Na + diffusion in NASICON solid-state electrolytes and the effect of Sc- and Al/Y-substitution

NASICON (sodium superionic conductor) based ceramics are one of the most promising classes of solid-state electrolytes for all-solid-state batteries. However, the mechanism of sodium ion diffusion is not understood in great detail since there is still a discrepancy between reported average structure models, local structures, and the number and position of sodium sites. To close this gap, we investigate the underlying diffusion mechanism and structural changes governing the Na + transport in Na 3.4 Zr 2 Si 2.4 P 0.6 O 12 using quasielastic neutron scattering (QENS) and powder X-ray diffraction (XRD). In the temperature range from 298 K to 640 K, the correlations between structural changes of a monoclinic C2/c to rhombohedral R $\bar{3}$c phase transition and the result of ion diffusion are investigated. The analysis of the quasielastic neutron scattering data reveals two quasielastic components corresponding to the Chudley-Elliott jump-diffusion model. It clearly shows two different Na + diffusion processes, local and long-range, on two different time and length scales and allows calculations of their corresponding activation energies. Additionally, the effects of Sc 3+ and Al 3+ /Y 3+ aliovalent substitution of Zr 4+ ions on the crystal structure and Na + diffusion are also studied. We can distinguish a local, chain, and cross-chain diffusion mechanism based on correlated QENS and XRD comparison of relevant nearest crystallographic Na–Na distances. The results reveal that the Na + diffusion in these NASICONs is three-dimensional and can provide guidelines on how dopants and changes in the crystal structure can affect the Na + conductivity.

Enhancing the metal–insulator transition in VO 2 heterostructures with graphene interlayers

In this work, studies were conducted on epitaxial VO 2 thin films to assess to the effect of remote epitaxy on the metal–insulator transition (MIT). The epitaxial VO 2 heterostructures were synthesized on both bare Al 2 O 3 (0001) substrates and Al 2 O 3 substrates coated with two monolayer-thick graphene. While both systems exhibit the MIT, the film grown by remote epitaxy on graphene demonstrates improved transport properties. Electrical transport measurements show that the on/off ratio is enhanced by a factor of ~7.5 and the switching temperature window is narrower for VO 2 thin films grown on graphene. By characterizing the heterostructures with a suite of structural, chemical, and spectroscopic tools, we find that the graphene interlayer inhibits oxygen vacancy diffusion from Al 2 O 3 (0001) during the VO 2 growth, resulting in improved electrical behavior at the MIT.

A structural analysis of ordered Cs3Sb films grown on single crystal graphene and silicon carbide substrates

Alkali antimonides are well established as high efficiency, low intrinsic emittance photocathodes for accelerators and photon detectors. However, conventionally grown alkali antimonide films are polycrystalline with surface disorder and roughness that can limit achievable beam brightness. Ordering the crystalline structure of alkali antimonides has the potential to deliver higher brightness electron beams by reducing surface disorder and enabling the engineering of material properties at the level of atomic layers. In this report, we demonstrate the growth of ordered Cs3Sb films on single crystal substrates 3C-SiC and graphene-coated 4H-SiC using pulsed laser deposition and conventional thermal evaporation growth techniques. The crystalline structures of the Cs3Sb films were examined using reflection high energy electron diffraction and x-ray diffraction diagnostics, while film thickness and roughness estimates were made using x-ray reflectivity. With these tools, we observed ordered domains in less than 10 nm thick films with quantum efficiencies greater than 1% at 530 nm. Moreover, we identify structural features such as Laue oscillations indicative of highly ordered films. We found that Cs3Sb films grew with flat, fiber-textured surfaces on 3C-SiC and with multiple ordered domains and sub-nanometer surface roughness on graphene-coated 4H-SiC under our growth conditions. We identify the crystallographic orientations of Cs3Sb grown on graphene-coated 4H-SiC substrates and discuss the significance of examining the crystal structure of these films for growing epitaxial heterostructures in future experiments.
